Linday Ellis has quit youtube and I'm gonna be sad about it for a long time, and maybe a lot angry at the assholes that harrassed her to the point where she couldn't do her job anymore, this is why we can't have nice things.
I'm so tired of this shit where someone says something a little out of pocket on twitter and then they get buried in a mob, or their "fans" decide to go send death threats to their percieved enemies. Just enjoy content guys, and if someone smart says something a little dumb just ignore it, they will figure it out themselves, that's what their friends are there for, and an audience does not count as friends. I know she's said and done insensitive things, but the bigger picture is that her contribution to leftist discourse on youtube was incredibly important, hell, she took me from being a conservative bootlicker to being a radical leftist, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one given her original audience demographics. I feel like people often lose the forest for the trees, and mostly just a few trees that are easily removed.
People make mistakes, let them, a mistake is not a pattern. Something someone did at the age of twenty doesn't define their worldview when they're in their thirties. Let people be human. With her exit I fear that we're gonna see a leftist brain drain on youtube, that a lot of these very big channels are just gonna disappear quietly the way she did, and certainly there will be people stepping in to fill gaps, but she isn't actually replaceable, no one is replaceable, the different perspectives people bring to the table, the angles people attack things at, all of these things contribute to the greater whole.
One more thing, when someone gets twitter cancelled over and over again, that doesn't push them to be more compassionate, it pushes them to guard themselves better, to isolate and not trust people, and reading her patreon post I see the marks of it. She regrets good things she's done because it has led to abuse, she has learned to fear and mistrust people because of the way people have abused her for every tiny percieved offense. If you are someone who goes after progressive people on twitter, ask yourself why, ask yourself if this is actually going to do anything positive, ask yourself if you think you're doing something that people will appreciate down the road. Just because someone has a million subscribers on youtube, doesn't mean they're less human, and it doesn't mean they're less worthy of your compassion.
