Coming back to reblogging to reply, idk why I first answered through a comment... See, that's me: sometimes I'm impulsive and don't think before posting, other times I spend days thinking of a meta I want to post :) I'm relieved and glad you now know me enough to not have been hurt but my posts.
To briefly go back to the broad subject of sexism: like most women I was a victim of misogyny at some point in my life. I probably still am sometimes but maybe because I'm older, I don't notice it anymore? I don't know. Anyway, when I first went online, I had the hope that it would be a safe place, where I could share my passion for the media I was the most into then. I had several ;) but then quicky I saw a crazy amount of sexist bullshit expressed in the form of attacks against fictional characters, and it was so disappointing. That wasn't what I signed up for, and if I hadn't also interacted with the loveliest people, also smart people who had the same passion for meta analysis as I had, I would have probably left social media aged ago because of that. I just don't need to see more hate against women, you see?
And I never found the way to completely avoid it because the way Tumblr or Twitter are made, it will throw the worst theories in your face wether you like it or not. Never mind that they're 6 years old! Yesterday, I was minding my own business, scrolling Tumblr in peace when boom, this long ass meta detailing a theory similar to "Irene Adler isn't a real character she's only Sherlock's sexual desire for John", but with Eurus for John, appeared on my dash. It totally erased Molly's trauma in TFP too, because it made the coffin scene all about John's feelings for Sherlock. I love Molly the most after Sherlock. I know she's not perfectly written, I know criticism can be made about that, it's not the problem. Once again, objective criticism doesn't bother me in the slightest. But erasure? I can't stand it. It really annoyed me hence why I posted this rant.
But if it was a direct reaction to this post, it was about a general rant about sexism in fandoms because so many times I read stuff like that. And I don't know how to avoid it, hence why, from time to time... I have enough.
The way some fandoms clearly hate women is really appealing. It shows in the way they either villainize female characters or significantly reduce their importance in the male characters's life. Some go even as far as claiming they're not real characters but only living metaphors of said male characters's sexuality. In certain m/f ships, female characters are reduced to walking uterus and aren't allowed to have any other desire than becoming wives and mothers; damn them if they want friends and have other plans for their future, cause only the male character's happiness counts.
I'm all for tolerance towards headcanon's but the stuff I've read lately.... Big yikes.
