The Last Chapter
So I went trough Smith's bio of The Soldier and inevitably arrived to the last chapter. You know, the one with dreadful revelations. The author is beating around the bush, I will not. Let's state aloud and clear that Smith claims Lawrence Oates raped eleven years old girl in summer of 1899. I find it gross to the point of nausea that the author calls it „a brief liaison” and „a romance”.
One might think that when you sling such serious accusations, you should provide some really solid evidence to support them. Well, no. The last chapter provides as much sources as a gossip column, that means none. But let's analyse things a bit deeper.
The girl was named Henrietta McKendrick, born in Johnstone, and indeed such a person did exist, I checked in Scottish birth registers. Census data though shows that the very same Henrietta McKendrick still lived in Johnstone in 1901, a year after the alleged child was born and six years after she allegedly left her hometown for good.
The details of how Oates and his supposed victim crossed paths are, well, non-existent. We are told to believe that they did, without any explanation where and in what circumstances. Heck, we don't even know where Henrietta lived at that time.
Equally hazy are the circumstances of the child's birth, which was supposed to happen somewhere in Ireland in 1900, but we shouldn't search for the birth certificate because it probably does not exist due to secrecy. That is such an idiotic claim that it made my jaw drop, because, you know, registering births has been mandatory in good ole UK (which Ireland was a part of in 1900) since like 1875 if memory serves me well, any way it was already mandatory in 1900. If secrecy demanded hiding the father's name, the solution was delightfully simple: the space for said name was left blank, or unlucky mother just invented something on the spot. So these claims by Smith have more than a whiff of a horseshit, to use terminology no doubt close to Soldier's heart.
The child was named Kathleen Gray and handed to Blanche Wright and Ellen B. Kingsford who ran a house for out of wedlock kids. Both ladies existed and indeed run such a house, so at least something checks up. I wasn't able to dig up much about Kathleen and her children, John and Gillian (maybe my record-fu got a tad rusty). One curious tidbit is though that Henrietta somehow „had overcome her early motherhood” and married certain Anthony Cooper in 1918. I mean the girl was twelve, TWELVE! when she gave birth, her father was already in grave, but we are told to believe she just somehow „had overcome” it. What was she doing after leaving the child in the orphanage, how did she support herself, how did she bounce from being in deep troubles ad bad material situation, to becoming well off woman and a doctor's wife? No word of explanation, dear readers just believe when autor says she had overcome it. Can you smell horseshit? Because I can.
Another quite funny tidbit is a memory of Gillian who, with her mother and brother John, went to see”Scott of the Anctarctic” in London's Odeon at Leicester square. According to that memory in the foyer they saf the life sized cardboard cutouts and got shocked at striking likeness of the brother with Oates. Well, I searched the et up and down, examined photos, watched the clips and haven't spotted even a single cardboard cutout in that foyer. There were the posters on the wall, sure, but the faces on them belonged to the actors from the aforementioned movie. So Gillian, it seems, got shocked over Derek Bond, who indeed is very much a look alike for the chap from the picture allegedly depicting John, much more than Lawrence Oates.
Overall, that last chapter, devoid of any serious sources, reads more like a tabloid than a part of serious biographical book and I am seriously surprised Smith decided to put such undocumented pile of crap in this, otherwise quite valuable, book. Especially that the allegiations contained in it are very, very heavy and Lawrence Oates, being dead for over a century, cannot defend himself. It certainly stings when I see that uproven claptrap even in The Soldier's Wikipedia article. Shame on you, Michael Smith.

A few days after their engagement party, Buck and Laura started planning their wedding. Buck had forgiven his parents for the way they treated him after Daniel died, but he wasn't interested in having a relationship with them, and therefore, they weren't going to be involved in the wedding. Instead of a mother/son dance, there was going to be a brother/sister dance.
Laura was a fan of the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing. She and Buck took a private dance class and asked the instructor to choreograph a dance to I've Had the Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

4:00 p.m.
It was Buck and Laura's wedding day.
Buck and Laura were having a non-religious wedding ceremony. A Justice of the Peace was officiating the ceremony.
The ceremony was being held on Huntington State Beach.
At the end of the sandy aisle was a square wooden arch that was draped with white chiffon. A garland consisting of eucalyptus leaves and white petunias rested on top of the arch. The officiant was standing in front of the arch. Rows of wooden chairs with white cushions were on both sides of the aisle. A bundle of white petunias had been tied to the right side of each chair with a white ribbon.
Heather, Andrew, and Noah were sitting in the first row on the left side of the aisle.
Heather was wearing lavender sandals with straps on the ankles and a 2-inch block heel and a sleeveless lavender dress with a v-neck and an a-line skirt. The dress reached her knees. No, I've never felt like this before.
Buck stood behind Laura. She put her right arm in the air. His right hand moved downward until it was on her waist.
Yes, I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you.
Laura's right arm slowly moved downward. Her fingertips brushed against the back of Buck's head. She turned her head and looked at him. She slowly moved her hand downward and wrapped it around her torso until it connected with the hand he had on her waist.
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I owe it all to you.
Buck used his free hand to push Laura's body outward. She spun and moved his hand so that it was beside her. He pulled her toward him.
I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone to stand by me
We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical fantasy
Now with passion in our eyes
There's no way we could disguise it secretly
So, we take each other's hand
'Cause we seem to understand the urgency.
Buck put his right hand on Laura's back and his left hand on her waist. He pressed her up against his chest, and they began to sway, their feet following the intricate patterns they had learned for weeks on end. She raised her arms and wiggled them.
Just remember
You're the one thing
I can't get enough of
So, I'll tell you something
This could be love, because
I've had the time of my life
No, I've never felt this way before
Yes, I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you.
Buck made his way to the back of the room, his hips subtly shaking with each movement. Laura stood still.
With my body and soul
I want you more than you'll ever know
So, we'll just let it go
Don't be afraid to lose control
No
Yes, I know what's on your mind
When you say stay with me tonight
Stay with me
And remember
You're the one thing
I can't get enough of.
Buck turned around with a flourish and made his way toward Laura, his hips subtly shaking with each movement. They made eye contact. He raised his right hand, palm upward, and beckoned her closer by repeatedly moving his curled index finger toward her.
So, I'll tell you something
This could be love, because
I've had the time of my life
No, I've never felt this way before
Yes, I swear
Yes, I swear
It's the truth
And I owe it all to you.
Laura ran forward. When she reached Buck, she jumped and stretched her arms horizontally to the sides. He put his hands on her hips and lifted her over his head.
The crowd cheered.
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I've searched through every open door
'Til I found the truth
And I owe it all to you
Now, I've had the time of my life
No, I've never felt this way before
Never felt this way
Yes, I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
I've had the time of my life
No, I've never felt this way before
Never felt this way
Yes, I swear, it's the truth
It's the truth
And I owe it all to you
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I've searched through every open door
'Til I found the truth
And I owe it all to you.
As Buck lowered Laura toward the floor, she felt the slight pressure of his fingers in her sides. He let go of her when her feet were on the floor.
The photographer stopped videotaping.
The DJ stopped spinning the disc.
Buck returned to his seat. Laura stayed on the dance floor.
It was time for the father/daughter dance.
The DJ spun a disc, and I'll Be Your Man by Zac Brown Band started playing. Laura liked that song and wanted it to play during the father/daughter dance.
You're going to make the finest mama someday
Some man will take you away
But until then
Chase down your dreams
Laugh all the time and believe
That love's going to conquer all things
So, until then
I'll be your man.
Rodney walked up to Laura. He wrapped his arms around her waist, and she put her hands on his shoulders. They began to sway. The photographer took a picture of them.
There was a time when I thought I knew love
Until you came into this world
Time keeps on flying
But you're always going be my baby girl
So, as you walk through this life, you will see
The world's what you want it to be
But until then
Go on and dance
Dance like there's no one around
Never stop singing out loud
And until then
I'll be your man
There was a time when I thought I knew love
Until you came into this world
Time keeps on flying
But you're always going to be my baby girl
Go have a ball
Take every chance that you make
You know I'll be one call away
I'll always be
I'll always be your man
Hold on, child
Hold on tight to your old man
Hold on, child
Hold on tight to your old man
I'm going to hold you tight
Under my wing long as I can
Hold you tight
Under my wing long as I can
Hold on, child
Sweet child of mine
Hold on tight to your old man
Hold on, child
Hold on tight to your old man
Hold you tight
I'm going to hold you tight
Under my wing long as I can
You're my, my, my, girl
Under my wing long as I can
I'll be your man.
The DJ stopped spinning the disc.
Rodney let go of Laura. They returned to their seats.
It was time for the brother/sister dance.
The DJ spun a disc, and Jada Facer and Kyson Facer's cover of Hey, Brother by Avicii started playing. Maddie stumbled across the cover on YouTube one day and showed it to Buck, and they decided to have the DJ play it during the brother/sister dance.
Hey, brother
There′s an endless road to rediscover
Hey, sister
Know the water's sweet but blood is thicker
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There′s nothing in this world I wouldn't do.
Maddie made her way to the dance floor. Buck walked up to her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, and she put her hands on his shoulders. They began to sway. The photographer took a picture of them.
Hey, brother
Do you still believe in one another?
Hey, sister
Do you still believe in love?
I wonder
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There's nothing in this world I wouldn′t do
What if I′m far from home?
Oh, brother, I will hear you call
What if I lose it all?
Oh, sister, I will help you out
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There's nothing in this world I wouldn′t do
Hey, brother
There's an endless road to rediscover
Hey, sister
Do you still believe in love?
I wonder
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There′s nothing in this world I wouldn't do
What if I′m far from home?
Oh, brother, I will hear you call
What if I lose it all?
Oh, sister, I will help you out
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do.
The DJ stopped spinning the disc.
Buck let go of Maddie. They returned to their seats.
The reception ended at 10:00 p.m.
Buck and Laura's ranch
11:00 p.m.
Using her cell phone, Laura checked her e-mails. She saw the video of her and Buck's first dance as a married couple. She downloaded the video.
Laura opened her cell phone's Instagram app. She changed her last name from Smith to Buckley. She changed her username from LauraSmith to LauraBuckley. She posted the video of her and Buck's first dance as a married couple, tagged Buck, and added a caption. The caption read "Our first dance as a married couple."

Cincinnati’s General Hal Young: Happy Bachelor, Disastrous Husband
Henry Clay “Hal” Young should have remained a bachelor. He was quite good at it.
His marriages, on the other hand, led to divorces that were, according to a New York newspaper, “very unsavory in flavor, but nauseating as well,” and overflowed with infidelity, spiritualist séances, voodoo, horsewhipping, prostitution and all manner of chicanery.
Hal Young was born in 1838 at the family estate on Warsaw Avenue in Price Hill. His father was among the earliest bankers in Cincinnati, founding what later became the Merchants’ National Bank. Hal worked as a bookkeeper until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he found his calling as a soldier. As a captain in the 137th Ohio Volunteer Infantry assigned to the defense of Fort McHenry outside Baltimore, Hal became infatuated with the uniforms, music and drills of army life.
When the war ended, Hal resumed his life as a prosperous businessman in his father’s companies, but devoted all his free time to a company of the Ohio National Guard that adopted the name “Lytle Greys” after General William Lytle, who died at the Battle of Chickamauga. Cincinnati loved the Lytle Greys and their marches and drills attracted large audiences and their captains were celebrities. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer [10 August 1924]:
“One of the first of these was Hal C. Young, a splendid captain and disciplinarian, but always a favorite in their social life. Always debonair and soldierly, he was an ideal leader for a company.”
Contributing to Hal’s “debonair and soldierly” bearing was his facial trademark, a magnificent pair of dundrearies – overgrown sideburns that hung down to his shoulders. The Lytle Greys often took their show on the road and it was on one such trip that Hal met and courted an Illinois lass named Helen Edgerton. They married in 1875.
Hal was promoted through the ranks and eventually became a General in the Ohio National Guard and good friends with Ohio Governor Thomas L. Young (no relation) who appointed him honorary commissioner to the 1878 Paris World’s Fair. Hal fell in love with Paris and only reluctantly returned stateside. Soon after arriving in Cincinnati, Hal abandoned his wife and took up with Henrietta Griswold, the wife of a Cincinnati newspaper editor.
Helen sued for alimony and when that proved unsuccessful, for divorce and alimony, naming Mrs. Griswold as correspondent. Not only did Hal have adulterous intimacy with Mrs. Griswold, Helen testified, he also frequented “diverse houses of ill-fame” in Cincinnati and had engaged in adulterous behavior in Paris and in London while they were in Europe.
Hal fired back that it was Helen who was the adulteress, consorting with a prominent Cincinnati businessman named Frank Foster, who conducted séances in the dark at Hal’s mother’s mansion in Price Hill where spirits allegedly informed Helen of her wayward husband’s misbehavior. Hal testified that all this spiritualist hokum was just a cover for hanky-panky: From the Cincinnati Post [1 November 1882]:
“Gen. Young alleges that Mrs. Young attended spiritualistic séances with Foster, and that during these séances she allowed Foster to take all manner of improper liberties with her.”
Mr. Foster denied any sexual involvement with Helen Young, claiming that their mutual interest was entirely spiritual, and his wife published an newspaper advertisement maintaining her husband’s innocence. On 2 November 1882, Mr. Foster waylaid Hal Young on Fourth Street and set about him with a horsewhip until a police officer dragged Mr. Foster away.
Helen Young, in an effort to gather more incriminating material on her husband, hired a detective named Annie Gilroy, the only woman detective in Cincinnati at that time, and also the only detective moonlighting as a voodoo priestess. Detective Gilroy testified that she used voodoo, particularly fortune-telling, to help gather scandalous rumors in this case.
After all the foofaraw settled, the court ruled in Helen Young’s favor. She got the divorce and a substantial monetary settlement which she never fully collected. Helen Young launched a career as a fine artist and had some success.
Following the divorce, Hal Young moved to Paris with Mr. and Mrs. Griswold. On one of his infrequent trips back to the United States, he met Louisa Smith, recently divorced from a New York stock broker. In 1886, they married in Connecticut and set up housekeeping in Paris.
Two years later, Hal kicked Louisa out of their hotel and she had to borrow money from a neighbor to book passage back to the United States. Hal’s sister, who may have introduced Louisa to Hal, took in the abandoned woman and sued Hal for reimbursement. Hal, true to form, countersued his own sister, insisting that she had inspired his wife to leave him.
In an attempt to appear impoverished, Hal signed over blocks of stock to two French women and to a young American student living in Paris. Louisa claimed that Hal was absent often, allegedly on business, but that she found him in Paris cafes in the company of one or more of these women.
According to the Cincinnati Post [10 January 1894] Hal’s attorney said his client hoped not to get divorced, because he would only get married again:
“Mr. Baker, who represents General Young, stated that his client, who is now past 60 years old, has decided not to press his divorce suit, because he realizes that if he were again single he would be in danger of forming an unfortunate alliance with some woman.”
Louisa succeeded in getting her divorce, however, and a judgement of $40,000 from General Young. Despite several lawsuits, she never collected most of it.
Hal remained in Paris, immune to subpoenas and process servers, but maintaining his debonair reputation. When he died, the Cincinnati Enquirer [7 April 1911] noted:
“He made his home in Paris, where he entertained all the visiting Americans of prominence. His death removes one of the landmarks of Paris.”

19, 25 and 49, please! Hope you have a good day!
Awww ♥ thank you! You too!
19. got a random fact you’ve been holding on to?
In the early 1900s in Philadelphia, three female artists who met as students of Howard Pyle formed a group known as the Red Rose Girls. The group was formed by Jessie Wilcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green and Violet Oakley, and they incorporated Henrietta Cozens, who moved in with them and took care of the tasks of the house, gardening and overall housekeeping. They were all prolific artists at a time when female artists were not supported fairly and were relegated to “smaller commercial forms of art” like postcards (predecessors like Eleanor Vere Boyle hadn’t been allowed to sell their art, for example).
The Red Rose Girls were intending to build a supporting environment for female artists, providing a platform for a “modern woman” in their careers. This led them to work as illustrators of children’s books, magazines and have showcases, later diversifying also into other forms of art. Some of their illustrations of literature (like of fairy tales or novels, some by female authors like Alcott) are still famously recognized.
The group disbanded in 1911 after Elizabeth married. Violet moved in with Edith Emerson, an art student she met, and dedicated herself to murals and teaching as well while living with Edith (what male historians call “roommates”, you know). Jessie would live alongside Henrietta for the rest of her days (they were also referred to as “roommates” by male historians), also accompanied later by Henrietta’s niece who became a nurse. All three were inducted to the Society of Illustrators after their deaths, Jessie being the second woman in history to be included.
Violet was included in the first gay-themed tour of Green-Wood Cemetery and Jessie left her entire estate to Henrietta before passing away in 1935, Henrietta died 5 years later.
To say we, as a society, deserve a biopic is an understatement.
25. name three songs that stir up the deepest emotions.
These are, of course, personal choices, from the top of my head: Beauty and the Beast sang by Angela Lansbury, Dust and Ashes from Great Comet and Mad Girl by Emilie Autumn.
49. describe your aesthetic.
This is a simplification but

May 16, 1922 The Gumps by Sid Smith: "Radio"
[ID: The widow Henrietta Zander stands around in her living room with her uncle Stephen. /end] Zander: That manicurist and that dressmaker. Ingrates. All the money I paid them, and then turn against me in my hour of need. And they both testified that I said I wouldn't marry him if it wasn't for his money. My attorney made the dressmaker admit on the stand that they paid my dressmaker's bill to get her to testify. And that manicurist. He showed her up, too. He made her admit that her husband left her and got a divorce because she was such a gossip and meddler.
[ID: Zander sets her large feathered hat on a table as Stephen speaks with her. /end] Zander: After this, I'll keep them in their place. Stephen: See what you get now? Well, you'll learn to keep things to yourself. For a few dirty dollars, she goes on the stand and tells the court everything. If she talks to you about everybody else, she'll talk to somebody else about you.
[ID: Zander sits down as Stephen angrily explains things to her. /end] Stephen: The four fastest ways in the world to spread news. Telegraph, telephone, tell-a-manicurist and tell-a-dressmaker.

📖!!
Percussion (aka Persuasion with music): A modern-day film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, except the Anne Elliot character is a mid-30s mixed-race (half black, half Jewish) music producer who works out of her family home and sees everything in terms of soundtrack/music, and the Wentworth character is a successful doctor (former army, went to the military’s med school) which is why everyone’s got the hots for him lol. All the issues/subplots would be relatable to my own experiences: class vs race vs gender vs culture in modern Los Angeles.
So the rundown of who the characters would become:
Anne Elliot (MC) => LA Music producer, family care-taker
Sir Walter Elliot(dad) => Former action movie star always trying to recapture his glory days, useless and ego-driven, played by Idris Elba in my dreams
Capt. Frederick Wentworth (love interest) => Beverly Hills Doctor, army vet, former poor white trash, Anne’s HS sweetheart, played by Chris Evans in my dreams
Elizabeth Elliot (sister) => Social Media “influencer”, useless, walks all over Anne
Henrietta Elliot-Musgrove (sister) => Westside Trophy Wife™, useless and selfish, ignores her kids
Mr. Musgrove (brother-in-law) => Family’s accountant, successful at work but spineless at home, played by Andy Samberg in my dreams
Capt Harville (Wentworth’s BFF) => Former army medic, now runs a wildly popular food truck with plans to open a restaurant; bitter ‘cause his wife left him while he was in Afghanistan
Louisa & Mary Musgrove (sister-in-law) => Now one character, pretty, sweet but silly Jewish Princess whose goal is to marry a doctor/lawyer and sell overpriced jewelry on Etsy/the festival circuit full time
Admiral/Mrs. Croft (Wentworth’s sister & BIL) => Indie rock band (4-5 people,) rents out Elliot’s mansion as a place to record their third album
William Elliot (no relation, love interest) => young up-and-coming action star in new film with Sir Walter; wants to date Anne because the tabloids would eat it up
The film would be about family in all its weirdness; like, the Elliots would host Shabbat every week even after they have to move out/the Crofts move in (Anne’s living in her backyard studio/guest house,) and Wentworth would be staying there because his sister invited him (not knowing his history with Anne Elliot) and so a lot of the drama would take place at these dinners. Or house-parties/group outings because Anne tends to make “family” of everyone she meets. Henrietta and Mr. Musgrove would get separated/divorced at one point, but he’s still welcome at Shabbat because Family is Family. Anne & Elizabeth try to yenta Capt Harville, etc.
Also all the ridiculous characters would get more nuance and be basically good-hearted peoples rather than just unrepentant assholes lol.
And in my fantasy world, the entire thing would be scored by Dan Smith from Bastille. So yeah.

30 Day of Prayer for Revival -
Day 12. "A necessary pre-cursor of any great spiritual awakening is a spirit of deep humiliation growing out of a consciousness of sin, and fresh revelation of the holiness and power and glory of God." - John R. Mott
2 Chronicles 7:14 - and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Lord, please grant me a fresh revelation of Your holiness, Your power, and Your glory that I might be humbled by a growing consciousness of sin. Please grant that same fresh revelation to all of Your people. Call to us, Lord. Call us to pray and seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways. As we humble ourselves, please hear from heaven and forgive our sin and heal our land.
Jesus is Tenderly Calling by Frances J. Crosby
Jesus is tenderly calling you home— Calling today, calling today, Why from the sunshine of love will you roam Farther and farther away?
Refrain: Calling today, calling today, Jesus is calling, is tenderly calling today.
Jesus is calling the weary to rest— Calling today, calling today, Bring Him your burden and you shall be blest; He will not turn you away.
Jesus is waiting, oh, come to Him now— Waiting today, waiting today, Come with your sins, at His feet lowly bow; Come, and no longer delay.
Jesus is pleading, oh, list to His voice: Hear Him today, hear Him today, They who believe on His name shall rejoice; Quickly arise and away.
Frances Jane Crosby, best known as Fanny Crosby, was born in New York in 1820. She became blind at the age of six weeks due to mistaken medical treatment during illness. At the age of fifteen she entered the New York Institution for the Blind. Having received a good education there, she then became a teacher in the institution in 1847, continuing until 1858. In 1858, she married Alex Van Alstyne, who was also a scholar in the same institution. While teaching at the institution, she met many notable people, including President Van Buren, President Tyler, Hon. Henry Clay, Governor Wm. H. Seward, General Winfield Scott, and others. Ms. Crosby had the honor of being the first woman whose voice was heard publicly in the Senate Chamber at Washington.
Though Ms. Crosby published four volumes of verses, her fame was mainly drawn from the writing of Sunday School songs and gospel hymns. In all, Ms. Crosby wrote about 8,000 hymns, only about 3,000 of which have been set to music. She began to write Sunday school hymns for Williams B Bradbury in 1864. After that time, she no longer wrote secular songs and supported herself by writing only hymns. She made very little money from her hymn writing. In those days, most of the money went to composers. However, her publishers did provide her with a little money to live on as she got older in order to sustain her. Ms. Crosby wrote under a variety of pseudonymns, or pen names: A.V., Mrs. A. E. Andrews, Mrs. E. A. Andrews, Mrs. E. L. Andrews, James L. Black, Henrietta E. Blair, Charles Bruce, Robert Bruce, Leah Carlton, Eleanor Craddock, Lyman G. Cuyler, D.H.W., Ella Dare, Ellen Dare, Mrs. Ellen Douglass, Lizzie Edwards. Miss Grace Elliot, Grace J. Frances, Victoria Frances, Jennie Garnett, Frank Gould, H. D. K., Frances Hope, Annie L. James, Martha J. Lankton [Langton], Grace Lindsey, Maud Marion, Sallie Martin, Alice Monteith, Martha C. Oliver, Mrs. N. D. Plume, Kate Smiley, Sallie Smith, J. L. Sterling, John Sterling, Julia Sterling, Ida Scott Taylor, Mary R. Tilden, Carrie M. Wilson, W.H.D.
Joyfully accepting her blindness, Ms. Crosby felt that had it not been for her affliction she might not have had so good an education, so great an influence, nor so fine a memory. She once told someone, “If I had been given a choice at birth I would have asked to be blind… for when I get to Heaven, the first face I will see will be the One who died for me.” She memorized many portions of the Bible, including the first four books of the Old Testament, and the four Gospels. This was a wonderful foundation for hymn writing as her hymns are full of the Bible.
She wrote her hymns quickly, and some of her most famous hymns were dictated almost as fast as the words could be taken down. An example of this is as follows: “In 1868, musician Howard Doane knocked on the door of Fanny’s apartment in Manhattan. ‘I have exactly forty minutes before I must meet a train for Cincinnati. I have a tune for you. See if it says anything to you. Perhaps you can commit it to memory and then compose a poem to match it.’ He then hummed the tune. Fanny clapped her hands and said, ‘Why, that says, “Safe in the arms of Jesus!”’ Those words might have soothed Fanny’s own mind as they have so many others, at the loss of a child [a child born to her after she married, died as a baby]. She had often used the phrase in comforting others: ‘Remember, my dear, your darling cherub is safe in the arms of Jesus.’”
This hymn, “Jesus is Tenderly Calling,” was published in 1883). It was possibly based on Hebrews 4:7 - He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, “Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” (quoting Psalm 95) Today, Jesus is tenderly calling to you? Are you listening? What is your answer to Him?
Other helpful companion scriptures to the song are:
Malachi 4:2, regarding the Sun of Righteousness
Luke 15:11-13, regarding the wandering prodigal son in a far country
Revelation 14:13, regarding our hope of eternal rest
Psalm 55:22, regarding bringing our burdens to Him
Mark 10:46-52, regarding finding healing from Jesus
2 Corinthians 6:2, regarding the accepted time of salvation
Romans 3:23 and 6:23, regarding the urgent need to do something about our sins
Hebrews 5:8-9, regarding our need to come to Jesus in humility and complete obedience
Matthew 17:3 and Hebrews 1:1-2, regarding listening to the voice of Jesus because God speaks to us through Him
Psalm 89:16, Philippians 4:4, and Acts 8:26-39, regarding how listening to Jesus and obeying Him brings us joy

Time's' Wounds
Chapter 37 Meredith sat under a large tree in her parent͛s garden in Devon. Hamilton͛s ashes were buried beside her under a scots pine she had planted. He loved plants and trees. The roof garden had had slowly died under her care. She just didn͛t have the knack that he had for them. His funeral had been how she had wanted their wedding, small and intimate. The select few they had invited to the wedding were there to mourn him, the priest who had married them had performed the funeral service and been there to comfort her when she had been handed his ashes in a plain rosewood box. She couldn͛t face their flat after the funeral. Her parents had packed everything up and had her things moved to their family home. The sale had gone through last week. She just had to decide what she wanted to do with her life. London held too many painful memories for her to be there anymore. Her boss had been sad to see her go but had understood her reasons and promised a sparkling reference when she needed one. In her listlessness she had wondered into the local museum one day last month, where they were celebrating Jane Austin and her contemporaries and everything Georgian. After sitting through a seminar by a lecturer from the local university she had engaged him in conversation on its subject, ambiguous women in Georgian England. Jane had been mentioned as the disgraced first wife of the Marquis of Stafford. Apparently she had been cast down for infidelity and attacking a family member, she had ended her time in bedlam after the Marquis had had their marriage annulled and her daughter packed off to distant relative to raise. Meredith had thought the lecturer had been badly offended when she had disagreed with his theory that Jane had been treated badly and did not deserve her treatment. Meredith had asked him if his views would change if he discovered she was a manipulative bitch that deserved everything she got. Meredith had not forgotten their friend that Jane had sent to the institution herself. The lecturer had tracked Meredith down a few days later to ask her opinion on another aspect. He had remarked that she was extraordinarily informed about the period. She had smiled and had tea with him in her parent͛s front living room. He had returned almost every day since then to talk to her. ͚Meredith? There͛s a man here to see you.͛ Her father broke into her thoughts. He had been a quiet, steady rock for her since Hamilton had died. Where her mother had clucked and bickered over everything he had quietly handed her a whisky and waited for her to talk, or not as she pleased. He had been the one to find her at all hours of the night sobbing her heart out and screaming about injustice to the sky by Hamilton͛s grave. He had taken her into his arms and let her cry herself into exhaustion and put her back to bed. He stood before her now with a middle aged man in a savile row suit. She pushed herself up from the grassy ground and, brushing her hands on her jeans, shook the man hand. ͚Miss Meredith Lacy?͛ ͚Mrs Hamilton now. I was married three months ago.͛ ͚Many congratulations. I am Jefferson Highton from Smith, Smith and Jones in London.͛ ͚A lawyer? What͛s this about?͛ Her mind reeled. Was there a problem with Hamilton͛s will? It had been very strait forward leaving everything to her. Maybe it was to do with the flat? ͚Well it͛s rather strange madam. We have had these papers in our possession for about two hundred years. It was left with strict instructions that it be delivered at this address on this date into the hands of Miss Meredith Lacy only, by a very important client of ours.͛ ͚May I ask who the client is?' ͚The Earl of Bybrook madam.͛ Meredith stopped breathing. Robert? Robert had left her a letter? But how? He had died before she had left. She had been at the reading of his will, surly anything he had wanted to give her would have been given then. But then Robert had known nothing of where she and the others had come from. He had his suspicions, she knew had had, but he had never discovered the whole. She took the packet the lawyer held out to her. ͚I must admit the firm was curious to see if you actually existed madam. They shall be curious to know how a lady from 1820 would know of you.͛ Meredith could hear the question in his voice but she had no inclination to tell this man her story. ͚A lady you said?͛ ͚Yes madam. The mother and guardian of the duke at the time. I believe he was very young when the title came to him, she managed his affairs until he was twenty one I believe.͛ ͚I see. Well I have no idea. Thank you for delivering it to me. Do I owe you anything for your time?͛ ͚No madam. The current Earl is an extremely generous employer. He shall be disappointed that you could not end his curiosity.͛ The man sounded disappointed for himself as well. She could imagine, he had probably had this curious package waiting patiently in a box since he had started at his firm. She thought he probably was one of the high flyers in the business but had brought it here over junior staff just to satisfy his curiosity. He left her in the garden staring the package. What could Ruth have sent her? It was an ingenious way of getting a message to her. Meredith was just sorry that it only went one way. She could never right back to her friend. Returning to her place next to her husband she broke the seal on the packet and flicked through the package. There were pictures and letters. It was a time capsule of Ruth, Robert, Mary and James. It held details of their lives and their growing families until Ruth͛s death in 1864. They had all lived very happy and full lives. Blinking back tears she pulled a letter at random from the pile of papers before her. My darling Meredith, I got married today. I know me, married? Who knew? But he͛s a good man. He͛s a gentleman down here in Bybrook. He has been very kind to Robert and I. I think I love him but then I thought I loved Nigel and look how that ended. At least this one married me. I͛ll take each day as it comes and live each day like it͛s my last. Robert has grown like a weed. He͛s five now and loves nature. I am constantly finding him and Martin (my husband) down by the pond looking for newts and frogs. Martin is teaching him how to identify trees. They have even started a little herb and vegetable garden. It is such a comfort to see Robert frolicking in the garden, safe and happy. We visited Henri and the Earl this morning. The hydrangea is flourishing and Robert planted a matching plant over Henri to honour the occasion. I miss them sorely especially on days like today. But I feel them with me when I feel I need them. Mary and James had twins last month. A boy and girl, Simon Robert and Henrietta Meredith. They are gorgeous little sprogs and Geoffrey is so protective of them. He lays between their cots and growls at anyone who comes into the room. It really is endearing to see. Like something out of peter pan. Though I can͛t see Geoffrey taking a bonnet and being called nana well. They adopted little Sarah when Jane was taken to bedlam. The poor girl was very quiet and withdrawn when they took her on. The poor dear, I hate to think what negligence Jane forced on the creature. Jane͛s other child went with her to the grave on the occasion of his birth. We placed him next to Robert and Henri. It wasn͛t the child͛s fault his mother was vile. He has a buddleia to watch grow about him and love from heaven. There is not a day goes by that we don͛t miss you and Hamilton. Mary and I get together sometimes and hope that you made it home. James was devastated that he did not get to you both before those ruffians threw you into the river. He dived in after you but could not find you. He still askes the constables if they have any word of you but I think he had come to the conclusion that you and Hamilton are gone. He brought us all to his family home near Bristol for a memorial service. It was beautiful. Hamilton͛s brother brought a couple of seeds from Hamilton͛s garden and planted them. Mary told me she entwined them when they sprouted. I hope this finds you both well and happy. I imagine that Hamilton eventually got his way and made you his wife though every time I imagine your wedding it͛s different. It just doesn͛t seem right that Mary and I are not there to fuss over you and get riotously drunk at the after party and embarrass you for your big day. I hope you know that wherever we are now we were with you on your happiest day. Never forget us as we will never forget get you. All my love in friendship Ruth. Meredith was dry eyed as she read the letter through again. She hadn͛t realised how hungry for news she had been of her friends. She was glad that little Sarah had gone to Mary and James. The couple had an unending capacity to love. She flicked through the documents before her and found an old picture, a photograph of an aging Mary and James surrounded by a large group of people. Meredith realised they were their children and grandchildren. By the looks of it Mary and James had had five children, Sarah and at the time of the picture, 1860, seven grandchildren. There was a similar picture of Ruth with a man she assumed was Martin, a tall strapping man that looked like Ruth͛s dad must be Robert. Ruth had had three other children, a boy and two girls, they all looked happy and healthy. Giving Hamilton a pat and gathering the papers she returned to her parent͛s Tudor house. They had given her a number of rooms on one side of the building. The room she used as a sitting room was dominated by a huge inglenook fireplace with a blown up photo of her and Hamilton when they had been out in the park one day. He was hugging her, his bright green eyes crinkled in laughter while she nuzzled his cheek, a look of amused adoration in her eyes. Walking over to her desk she rifled through the draws until she found what she was looking for. Two large but old fashioned frames. She slipped the pictures of Ruth and Mary into each and hung them either side of her wedding picture with Hamilton. Standing back she admired her work. Seeing her friends so happy she made a decision. She couldn͛t go on living in the past. She would not forget it, the past had made her but she had to move on or fade away. She refused to become Miss Havisham. There was a knock on the door. 'Meredith, your lecturer is here to see you again.͛ Her mother called as she walked in. Meredith gathered herself and turned to the new man in her life with a dazzling smile. 'Hello John. I͛m so glad to see you.͛ The end

April 12, 1922 The Gumps by Sid Smith: "!!!!!!!"
SHOCK AWE AND HORROR! The Bim/Zander marriage storyline finally hits its climax and Zander's two-timing nature is revealed! This was real stirring stuff back in the day. Easy watercooler conversation.
[ID: Uncle Bim sits on the back bench seat of a car, a bouquet of flowers hanging on the door jamb above him. He bends over to pick up a small hardcover book lying on the floor. He's wearing a full suit and top hat and carries a cane. /end] Caption: There is not a happier man in the world than Uncle Bim. This is the eve of the wedding. He is just returning from the theatre and dinner and has just said goodbye to Heaven Eyes and pressed a kiss upon her forehead. And tomorrow, oh, happy day! Bim: Hello, what's this? Henrietta must have dropped this.
[ID: Bim opens the book and begins reading. /end] Bim: Her diary. A little red morocco book. And her pink fingers have written in it. It isn't fair for me to look into this. I feel like a thief, but I'm curious. I just want to see if she has written anything about me. I'll just take a little peek. A little peep won't hurt.
Bim: Dec. 13th - Wireless telegram from the Australian pest which read, "Will be with you on the 17th." Dec. 14th - Carlos was over again last night. He was a little peeved when I showed him the telegram. Dec. 15th - Carlos was over again tonight. He said I wouldn't have anything to do with the Australian if it wasn't for his money. Carlos is a mind reader.
[ID: Bim is shocked and appalled to read on. /end] Bim: Dec. 17th - The pest has arrived. The house is full of flowers and candy. He is coming up tonight. Horrors!!! Dec. 18th - He was here last night, dressed like an undertaker. Dec. 25th - Got an automobile from Spindleshanks. Wish he'd send me some gasoline. Jan. 10th - Took Carlos for a ride in the car. Met Bimbo. Pretended I didn't see him. Will hear from this tomorrow. April 8th - He was over again last night. Carlos called up while he was here. I told him it was the dressmaker. He looked suspicious.
Caption: On and on, Uncle Bim read. Page after page. Not a line of love or affection. Poor Uncle Bim. But this is the straw that broke the camel's back: Jan. 31st - He nearly proposed last night. I did everything I could to land him, but he shied like a frightened fawn. I don't think that I could ever love him. But for his money, I'd marry a chimpanzee.
