A problem with The Bagginshield Edit is that it doesn't even attempt to explain who those eagles were or why we should care. This is because there is not a single line exploring that in the thirty pages/hour paced Jackson cut.

#whereas my cut is a much more respectable fifty pages/hour #they don't even really explain it in lotr but they super don't explain it here #my only other major issue of there just not being a way to edit around something bad is thranduil abandoning the battle #which happens to be the impetus for bilbo heading to the mountain #kinda important #i also tried including as much of the dol goldurr stuff as possible while making sure it stood on its on #which led to a really awkward cut when galadriel gets cornered by the ringwraiths and starts reciting the poem from fellowship #my driving principle for those scenes were to make lotr the sequel not hobbit the prequel #so you know this guy is obsessed with rings and that bilbo found a ring #but you don't have to know what a ringwraith is or about the last alliance to know what's going on #and it damn well isn't casting the battle as a small overture in the war of the ring #completely shifting the focus away from thorin's quest to service some bullshit we don't even know yet
