I don't even tend to like breakup and makeup stuff I think esp in modern AUs they tend to be overly dramatic in cheap ways that aren't satisfying or coherent wrt the characters or the narrative, but there ARE ways to play them esp pre and post-BM if you write them getting together and suddenly post-BM wwx is all cold and distant from lwj and then they work back to being friends again but wwx can't be honest w lwj in the way he used to and he fears that lwj wouldn't feel the same if he knew the truth and lwj is confused and upset and wants to help but can't communicate that without sounding like a judgy asshole/all his methods don't really help anyway and despite how they used to be together the distance between them keeps widening in insurmountable ways and lwj just keeps failing to take the steps that wwx is taking and fails to stand beside him until wwx is dangling off a cliff in nightless city and lwj is like 'please come back' and wwx is like 'let me go' and they KNOW how they feel about each other concretely bc they literally were together before everything went to shit but it wasn't enough and now it's too late and wwx is dead.

but then they get another chance and despite how badly it went last time due to the situation and their relative powerlessness and inexperience and despite wwx's wariness and uncertainly abt lwj they fall back into their rhythm since they've already experienced and worked through the fighting and the pained confusion and now lwj's addressing his failures from the past they come to a point where they can get back together as adults who really and fully do understand each other, and understand each other better for having been together once before in the past. I can see it
