Oh are we doing personal takes? Here’s one that might steam some hams. I think the current direction sonic has been going isn’t entirely Flynn’s fault. I mostly think sonic team/ sega are partly to blame as well, Flynn is just a writer that has dumb ideas. But sega/sonic team also overlook those ideas, they are mostly the ones that decide what their characters/games should be, and if sonic team thought giving eggman a daughter was ok, then that is also on them, not just Flynn

This is, more or less, the summarized timeline:

Forces is considered an abysmal failure, after a streak of mediocrity and disappointment that started with Lost World and continued with the three years of Boom. Game is rushed and also wants to cater to too many people, speaking of confusion. The fandom is burned out.

Conversely, Mania is a resounding success. Mania was developed by fans, which leads to the mentality that Sonic should be just left in their hands.

Archie is cancelled. This really doesn't help the fans' mood, especially the ones who were attached to it and considered it a fun alternative to the games. However, a saving grace: another comic series begins soon after, helmed by none other than Archie veteran Ian Flynn.

IDW is another resounding success. Fans love Flynn's writing and consider it leagues above Pontaff's, as he "gets the characters" and remembers the lore. From 2018 to 2022, this is the best received Sonic content, because the games department is slightly lacking (TSR dies after a few months, Colors Ultimate becomes infamous for its glitches, Origins gets a lukewarm reception both because of its glitches and because of the lack of Amy, although the latter gets fixed in a DLC).

SEGA can't ignore how much Flynn gets seen as the savior of a franchise in danger. They decide to hire him for the next game, which was already highly experimental and made with the intention of saving Sonic from another brink.

Frontiers is a massive success, the likes SEGA hadn't seen since Mania, or perhaps even Adventure 2. The story is one of the most praised parts of the game, because at last, it "rerails" the characters and delves into them. By this point, admittedly, Flynn had caught some flack for IDW, for things like #50, but the majority still adores him.

Well. Why not keep him, then? And give him more and more to do? Clearly he knows what he's doing, right?

I don't like that Flynn is sticking his fingers in every Sonic product, but I also recognize that it's not that he's prancing in, demanding attention. Quite the contrary. While he loves basking in praise and hype, sometimes he sounds just... tired.

Also, despite my former friends being all like "there, I knew you'd get pissy and judgmental the moment Flynn was revealed as the writer for Frontiers because you hate him, you're not giving him a chance!", I'm actually aware that the biggest issues I have with its plot are not Flynn's fault. From what I gathered, he wrote the dialogue, but not the story, which was also at the mercy of the rushed development (I can't in good faith blame Flynn for things like Sonic recovering from corruption in a minute). I can safely blame him for things like Amy being all "I'm not a damsel in distress anymore!" or writing unironically the words "wildly inconsistent" or the entirety of the Egg Memos :P but no, Kishimoto is to be questioned for the plot beats. Eggman may be more callous towards Sage in Japanese, but the DLC still ends with them holding hands, and that was no Flynn.

Adrianna is a rich lady, just not, Bill Gates/globally-rich (can't believe i'm making that parallel). She's more like mafia-rich, has enough money to live in luxury without bringing too much attention to herself. She's a household name only in certain, tighter circles, some less legal than others. Can walk down the street without necessarily being recognized. She's more lowkey, that's the point. No bodyguards, no chef, no secretary, no corporation. The nature of where her money comes from is unclear/left open to interpretation. She's def still doing merc work as a side hustle tho.

Marcus is a uni prof. There, i said it, he's out of the woods and unto higher education (again, wtf are the words i'm using). Still a werewolf, but like, he's got a job now. This tickles my funny bone because university professor/librarian is actually an AU version of him that lives rent free in my head so i wanna smush those two together. So Anthropology/language expert Marcus is a professor at a local university. Nothing flashy, nothing that draws too much attention. Once a month he takes a long drive out in nature (with either an old ass car or an even older, run down motorcycle, up to be decided), to "unwind and get some fresh air", lol. He's been at this job for a while, keeps it lowkey, has a somewhat okish reputation as the quiet, slightly awkward foreign teacher that doesn't understand the subtleties of this culture.

Achim is older and in his underground-fighting era. A bit of a celebrity, a bit of a heart throb with the ladies (and some lads too), a bit of an asshole, if he hasn't had his meal yet. When he's not getting punched for people's entertainment he's a club bouncer, but he does a bunch of other stuff too, like moving boxes, bringing in supplies, fixing that loose cabinet door, etc. He's more street smart than book smart. A bit abrasive with people he doesn't know, but super chill and nice within his small circle of friends. Secretly takes reading and writing classes.

Terry is basically the same, with the added feature that she is well aware that she cannot die and is a lil shit about it. Slightly deranged in the head, but like in a very cutesy, very demure way. Fashion Icon. Knows everybody (as in, she knows my other muses and a lot of other ppl too, whatever the plot calls for). Easily the best girl in this shit show.

Isaac is forever. Eternal. Ever-lasting. My boy is perfect, no need to switch him up. Maybe just explore his unhinged self a lil bit more.

Bonus:

Viktor and Emily, vampire cousins. Viktor is Achim's frenemy/foil type of character. Likes poetry unironically, doesn't understand modern frivolities, hates himself but thinks he's better than you. So basically an elder emo. Emily is the younger one of the two, Belle Delphine-coded, bdsm ballerina, fan-favorite goth girl with smol tiddies. Says "nya" unironically and has a major crush on Achim, truly believes they will get married one day. Viktor and Emily don't like eachother, but it's more him not liking her while she's just iffed out.

okay, i cannot keep silent about this anymore-

do people ACTUALLY enjoy this show still..? like i LOVE the concept SO SO SO much i constantly consume fan content and rewrites and stuff- and, as someone who wants to produce shows one day, i have been working on a rewrite of my own! BUT HOW DO PEOPLE STILL WATCH THE ACTUAL SHOW UNIRONICALLY?? i gave up on this show a very long time ago.. and when i saw the season 5 leaks i was just like, "yeah no its over this show is done-" BUT NO?? number 1: when did this show get so goofy? like yes it was originally a little goofy but some of it added to the charm but now its just like.. HUH? LIKE THE SCENE WITH GABE "DANCING"?? HOW. HOW EVEN.

number 2: this is definietly not a show impressionable kids should watch. not only is it just BAD, but also there are "certain behaviors" in the show that are portrayed as normal even though they are 100% PROBLEMATIC and CREEPY? yeah, i'm talking about marinette's stalking, chat noir not being able to take no for an answer, and the writers FAILING to make gabe a sympathetic villain.

first of all, before his motive was revealed, he would monologue and yell into the void about how he wanted the ladybug and black cat miraculous(s) to "rule the world??". so the writers backtracked or just weren't paying attention. THEN the whole thing at the end of season 5. i cannot type out how utterly (hehe) STUPID it all was! he was a poorly written villain who the writers attempted and FAILED at making him sympathetic, and just pretended everything he did was okay to push under the rug because "he did it for love"! HUH? bestie no. he was basically a terrorist! also while i'm talking about gabe, i need to mention him and adrien. yes yes we all know he was a bad father. him trying to "make it up to him" was stupid. he was an abuser. you can't just fix everything by making shitty pancakes? the minute people trying to defend him by pointing out how in style queen and gorzilla by saying "SEE! he cares about him!" then ignoring all the bait episodes where when he finds out about chat noir's identity just does not care. number 3: the ending of the hawkmoth/shadowmoth/monarch (i will come back to this) arc. please do not say that the ending paid off. it did not. "adrien COULDN'T of been there because it would have broken him!" YES! YES THAT'S THE POINT! for FIVE SEASONS we've been building up to the two PARTNERS YES PARTNERS (i will also come back to this) finding out who he is and bringing paris justice! but no, bye adrien you're being thrown away. i can't comprehend why they did this. oh wait! i can! because marinette needs to be the focus even though the show is named Tales of Ladybug AND CHAT NOIR. and because they don't want to do anything risky with their characters, because they want to push out as much as they can with this show by not changing anything up!

"but don't you understand? they did that so they can use it for later drama!" so they didn't say anything to adrien OR CHAT NOIR so they can milk this show more. that's not a good reason. number 4: why do they also do those dumb name changes? i'm assuming for marketing for toys or something, but wow. it is just so cringe. yes i'm saying cringe because i can't think of another word for it. and then every character just goes along with it? sorry i can't deal with it. shadowmoth, pennybug, snake noir, bunny noir.. i'm sorry no. number 5: ladybug and chat noir. why would they try and make these two out to be equals when it obviously isn't true? chat noir and adrien have huge issues when it comes to his behavior, but so does mari so hey they're made for each other! they shouldn't have put his name in the SHOW'S TITLE and shouldn't have made us think he was important in the first two seasons in the first place. period. number 6: the designs. now this one is a bit of a nitpick, but its a justified one! why are the designs so bad?! for a show that has such a focus of the fashion industry, the designs are not giving. i'm not talking about the akumatized victims designs, but the main cast. marinette want's to be a fashion designer but everything she makes is.. so bad? the things she makes for that weird movie they were shooting were literally just sheets of fabric. her civilian outfit is just.. its not it okay i'm sorry. ladybug's design is so boring and her upgraded, lucky charm outfit is still awful (honestly i think its worse). "but when she first became a hero she wasn't sure of herself!" bad excuse. one, they didn't make that a point, and even if they did she shouldn't have kept it so long. two, the designs are just bad sorry. adrien. his wardrobe is a nightmare. well i mean his one outfit. you'd think with how his life his he would be wearing the most hip clothes but then again.. look at his father. GABE IS A CANDY CANE HAHAHHA.. then his just a sheer white. for someone who is stated to be a super successful fashion designer, his outfits are horrific.. and his villain design is just meh. man has a chrome dome. have you guys seen alya's shoes. number 7: why did they change chat noir's name in the english verison, like i get it "chat is french" but still. number 8: the only reasons chloe's development was backtracked is because thomas has a hate boner for her. i mean she WAS based off his bullies. number 9: thomas astruc.

number 10: adrien being a sentimonster. like wow, way to destroy the show..? like yeah! it was a cool theory, but that's just it- a cool THEORY. them adding it as canon into the show really made it all fall apart. yes! ir makes sense! that's how emilie ended up in her coma/dead state, but it just.. isn't it. it takes away adrien's character a lot, and just makes him a product. its hard to explain without really planning out my thoughts, but the whole vibe of his character is thrown off. i feel like it would make more sense to say that adrien (and felix) and special cases. imagine if the miraculous was broken BECAUSE of them? like making sentimonsters that have emotions is what broke it? but no we didn't get that. the whole thing gives me the ick, ESPECIALLY because marinette, felix, kagami, gabriel, emilie, ameilie, and possible nathalie know. it just feels wrong.

-johnny and danny bein friends and staging a fake fight (which danny takes too seriously, once again this child has aggression he NEEDS TO WORK OUT) I hope these three stay friends, I said it before but danny needs more friendly ghosts to hang with.

-at this point, Danny's ghost enemies are a lot like, I dunno, batman's rouge gallery is the first thing that comes to mind. they all have their own gimmick and unique designs, but most of them are easy to beat after learning the Moral Lesson. I still get excited when any of them show up again, though. 18 is another valerie episode!!!! :D skulker really said you two will get along if I have to handcuff you together <3 and the gym teacher really said, youre married now, have a flour baby! ngl, I'm not really watching this show for the shipping stuff (which I am very scared to look at the fandom for after I finish this watch through- I feel like there's probably discourse/arguing about ships...) but. I'm gonna put my opinion out there. valerie/danny > sam/danny. maybe I just really love the enemies to lovers trope. And the secret identity stuff adds Extra Flavor.

-SKULKER JUST HAVING THE BOX GHOST AND DANGLING HIM BY A STRING. HILARIOUS. and him watching them with binoculars and making his silly little commentary. AND MAKING THE SACK BABY CRY. LMAO. THIS DUDE IS A BABY KIDNAPPER. skulker is super fun

-danny, you just...collapsed the water tower. and then attacked the nasty burger machine...mascot thingy...out of anger..I KEEP SAYING HE'S GOT ANGER ISSUES BUT. HE REALLY NEEDS A LESSON IN MANAGING COLLATERAL DAMAGE!!! So does valerie!! They're both pretty focused on each other. I mean it's good of Danny to say he's trying to make sure PEOPLE don't get hurt, but... (I mean I guess it's not something 14 year olds WOULD worry about, but as an adult im like, who's going to fix that? how much money will that take??)

-TUCKER MAKING BANK. and sam and tucker being super emotionally attached to their flour baby and being pretty good parents. that's cute...also him just straight kissing her and being like. WAIT. O_O JDSKAFHD. his mom baking them into cookies was the funniest possible result. tbh I dont feel like this is on tucker, if anything the other kid's shouldve been more responsible! He was just taking an opportunity to get that $$ which I respect

-Danny being more understanding of Valerie's situation in the end (helping her at her job, too, and trying to keep that a secret for her!!!) And seeing them work together this ep, and also her letting phantom get her out of the ghost zone...was very sweet. LOVE that. more valerie eps pls

-'my family has controlled ghosts with this for generations!' WAIT. WAIT FREAKSHOW /ISNT/ A GHOST? I didn't expect that...he's just a fucked up guy controlling ghosts? anyway watching danny shoot at police cars and rob banks while mind controlled. its like, the most stereotypical 'bad' things lmao. (tbh an evil ghost circus troupe is a sick concept)
