Many older large scale ASCII art pieces that weren't just made with a JPG->ASCII converter were also done that way, taping a drawing to a computer screen and tracing it in notepad
Nowadays of course the three people who do this style of ASCII art just pull the drawing up on their computer and type directly over it.
#i am using a strict definition of ASCII here btw#it's not how people do for example ANSI art#and i'm actually not super familiar with the SHIFT-JIS scene#like i follow a handful of release groups on twitter on my art account but that's about it
