i finally looked up the person who made the oil paint brushes (and my other fave brushes lol) on instagram, so i could wrap my head around using them better and i was SO surprised by how wildly differently he paints from me

#in particular i was kinda struggling with values because every colour i'd put down would get smudged instantly #and i was watching his timelapses and it's just. oh. he simply made a new layer #or used the brushes as a textured overlay to alter the colours #which aren't bad things to do at all! but it did not even occur to me lol #i used to play around with blending modes more way back in the day but when i was just getting back into art #and trying to figure out a digital gouache look i put more effort into painting stuff by hand because. there's no overlay mode irl lol #even when i use brushes that are intended to add texture (like grain etc) i tend to use them on a normal mode layer #i think i do understand the brushes better after painting some more at least #and if anything it's a testament to how well crafted they are that they work great even with my caveman ways
