(i like to think that hytham trained there as well bc it’s my asscreed now). hytham going from acolyte to highly respected member of their order, coming back to old friends completely different. introducing eivor to the larger network of the hidden ones and eivor getting more involved in the hidden one’s culture!! i think eivor would have a lot of conflict over joining the hidden ones, even after she does, and its having access to this new clan that spreads across nearly the whole world that ties her to the earth again. i want her to meet rayhan, who adores them both, like, rayhan is to hytham what gunnar is to eivor. but also being back in this place, the origins of hytham as a hidden one—but it’s always been inseparable from basim, and he doesn’t know what to do with all this faith because he’s not sure he can put it solely the creed or into another person, but eivor’s equal devotion to both him, their clan, and the creed shows him his faith is worth holding on to with other people, that they can build a new family (between themselves and their sect in England) and that that hope is worth being vulnerable for

The last ten-twelve years of media have been a blessing and a curse for my field, bc while my uni department gets basically unprecedented funding these days (let's not kid ourselves, it's still a shoe string budget, we can just buy new shoe strings now), we also regularly have to tell neo-nazis in no uncertain terms that this! is not! for you! (and you can actually measure that influx in popular media, too. There were huge spikes in interest when God of War and the most recent MCU Thor were released. While we’re at it, here are my opinions on all the AssCreed games I’ve played

AC - savepoints? what’s that. Also, I continually forget how much of a douche Altair is in the beginning. Still, Not Bad (TM)

AC2 - I can’t believe how well almost all the graphics have aged, minus the face textures, maybe. Memorable characters and music. Unfortunately, it’s incredibly heavy on the parkour, but you have to hold three buttons to parkour and ow my fingers.

ACB - Not enough Leonardo 0/10. Okay, seriously, also great but with less charming environments. A+ color customization on the outfits, though.

ACR - Stop hating on ACR dangit. Interesting concept. Too many new additions, I think, but eh. Parkour is super fun in this one. Istanbul is an awesome place to set a game. 

ACIII - Haven’t played too much of it yet. Tree parkour too linear - don’t wanna go where the AI wants to go? Guess you’re fucked. 

ACIV - the sea stuff is A+, except for the fleet minigame thing. Characters suck. Music’s great, though. Parkour controls are great, but AI is completely overwhelmed with climbable shit and has no fucking idea what you’re trying to do 99% of the time and also REALLY hates rigging.

ACR (the other one) - Misleading title, lol. Ew, ‘Murica. Everything is way too cold and snowy. Characters are better than in ACIV. Sea stuff still rules, but water lighting is not as pretty anymore. Credits are longer than the actual game. Game is 99% collectibles. At least the fixed the fleet minigame. Also, almost every enemy kicks some serious ass. This game can get actually difficult, in the proper way - not glitchy-AI-fake-difficult like ACIV

Also, I love how Ubisoft started out with “Abstergo is evil you gotta hate em” and ended up with a very unsubtle “We’re Abstergo”.

nyc seems oddly unrelated to the city i’m running around in tbh. Like, NYC is new york as it is now but doesn’t really describe colonial new york v well??

I was looking forward to new york--wait. FIRST i have to complain; really? Was it really necessary to keep me from new york for over half the game? Like, was anything really gained by keeping me from new york? Like sure, it makes sure there’s still stuff to do for the latter half of the game (which I instantly complete most of the quests before even doing the next quest, of course, so that’s one goal that the game spectacularly fails to accomplish) and that’s FINE but at least don’t like say “HEY YOU NEED TO DO THESE THINGS IN NEW YORK TOO” for most of the game and then keep me from it for over half the game that’s just ridiculous! Either don’t give me new york quests until we get to new york OR let me go to new york but quite frankly what new york provided wasn’t worth the time it took to get there!

Anyway.

I was looking forward to new york but then I remembered that the sidequests are actually all fairly tedious so new york doesn’t add any especially fun gameplay; just adds more area I have to run around in to get everything done. so. not ideal, but could be worse! It wasn’t Not Fun, it was just. not really worth it. Like everything else in this game

Also I understand that a very similar game came out just last year, but you don’t have to copy literally everything Arkham City did. In fact, the whole I’m a Detective thing only barely made it past suspension of disbelief over in city, and that was with the World’s Greatest Detective using all his Detective Gadgets! You are some guy in the 18th century who has a couple years of Killing People Training, not Crime Scene Reconstruction Training! all your Crime Scene Reconstructions don’t make any sense babe!

I also wanna talk about dad, like Neglectful dad not Abusive dad. First of all, Connor has every right to be mad at dad for being neglectful! But when his response to “hey your order killed mom” is “wait i never gave that order” then like a reasonable response is “oh huh i guess Charles Lee is just actually evil then we should both kill him” and not “I’m all out of forgiveness” because the thing is there’s nothing to forgive! You forgive people for doing Bad Things and sure Hatham’s done Bad Things but Killing Mom isn’t actually one of them! but connor is as always choosing the wrong hill to die on, possibly literally. Like, I don’t remember if I’ve talked about this in an ses but there has been literally no indication that any of the templars that aren’t Charles Lee and maybe Hickey are actually Bad, but connor’s all “my adoptive dad says u bad guise so i kill” and when his literal dad says “look this is what’s happening you dense idiot” connor’s just like “LALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU” grow up connor just stop you idjit

Like here’s the thing I love the characters in the present, other than abusive dad, who should die, but i hate connor and like. he’s the character who i’m playing as. And i don’t think he’s interesting either i just think he’s whiny and annoying and should just think about what he’s doing for once for ONCE and i might not hate him but noOOooOOooOOoo I just gotta deal with this baby crying all over the place “u didn’t have to kill him” you kill people all the time dillwad

I know i’m whining about the same things over and over again (at least i feel like I am) but it’s because like. the gameplay is fun, except where it isn’t, but the more ACIII goes on the less I have to say about the gameplay; it’s fun, except where it isn’t, but as the game goes on you just get more and more gameplay and the fun stuff stays fun and the tedious stuff just gets more tedious so. Like as Dishonored went on the gameplay, depite being based on the same foundation, got more and more complex, bringing in enemies that reacted to stimuli differently, and fewer Convenient Height Differences. In fact, most video games do things like this. It feels like AssCreed III brought in all it’s complex gameplay into the Haytham chapters so you could explore it all, then brought in all of the complexities that Connor provides into the next couple of chapters, and then didn’t really have tons of complexity to add to the latter half of the game, so they through in another city to distract you. But I’ve accomplished all the interesting sidequests in New York, so. Let’s hope the last few chapters prove me wrong and make the game exciting again!
