Thoughts on Everybody's in L.A.
Tumblr media
I don't mean to be hyperbolic, but I think John Mulaney's Everybody's in L.A. is a brilliant experiment that both comedy and talk shows desperately need.
On the surface, it's a weird window into what Mulaney finds funny, but underneath, it's a loving deconstruction of the talk show medium. As I've written here before, I have a love for nighttime talk shows: The Tonight Show, Late Show, Late Night, etc. They are a predictable staple of American television, that comfortably threads the needle of topical humor and Hollywood promotion.
Outside of a few quirks here and there, for the most part, you know exactly what you are getting when you tune in. That being said, I think these shows are best when they are weird. David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and Craig Fergeson really knew how to grow an audience with oddball humor and premises.
Much of the late-night weirdness has disappeared. Fallon, Colbert, and Kimmel, being in the early slot, play it pretty straight; with Fallon being the most off-base. Myers has leaned into political/Daily Show style bits and the Late Late Show has been replaced by After Midnight, a game show.
So where does Everybody's in L.A. fit into this? If you're not aware, Mulaney and Netflix decided to capitalize on comedians raining down on Los Angeles for the Netflix is a Joke Fest, by booking a nightly, live, talk show hosted by John Mulaney, one of the most respected stand-up comedians in the game right now.
It ran for 6 days during the fest and was live every night. I wasn't expecting much. The pitch makes it sound like a video podcast, with a rotating couch of guests, dozens of which you can find on Youtube (most of them are bad). What the show actually turned out to be was Mulaney steering a ship on the perpetual brink of chaos.
From call-in contributors to clueless comedians to Richard Kind being 100% Richard Kind to SAYMO L.A.'s annoying delivery robots to actors showing up to be audience plants, every episode had a bizarre alternate dimension feel to it. The guests weren't there to promote anything, and the show ended up being a love letter to the oddest parts of L.A.
In fact, instead of focusing on the guests, Everybody's in L.A. focused on L.A. Each episode had an L.A.-specific theme. Helicopters, Earthquakes, and Coyotes were just a few of the topics tackled by the guests, with one expert guest always being on the panel to ground the conversation.
The unconventional nature of the show seems to have caught some of the comedians off guard. Nate Bargatze, Mae Martin, and Tom Segura are just some of the guests who were clearly uncomfortable or just didn't fully get the joke. These three are some of the best in the business right now, so catching them off guard says a lot about the comedy featured in the show.
On the other hand, guests like Jon Stewart got the joke. “I feel like this entire show is a Banksy.” he said during the episode on palm trees. Nikki Glaser said to Mulaney in the last episode “It’s like an inside joke that only you are in on.” Bill Hader, Sarah Silverman, and Pete Davidson all were clearly having a great time drinking in the avant-garde nature of the show.
But why is this little 6 episode experiment so important? Well, it pulls influences from everywhere: SNL, Letterman, Graham Norton, and even Chapelle's Show. The pretaped shorts ranged from parodies to local L.A. documentary pieces to slice-of-life/on-the-scene bios. Even the bumpers between segments felt like art.
Bits that seem like one-offs come back like story narratives and legitimately famous actors show up to play uncredited bit parts. Mulaney knew he had a long leash and with it being on Netflix, and a one-off series, he didn't need it to be mainstream or even a success. It could just be art, a snapshot of his and his writer's minds to live on the streaming platform like a Michelangelo painting.
We all know broadcast television and late-night shows are dying a slow death. I don't think anything can stop it. What can late night learn from Everybody's in L.A.? Embrace the weird. Try something new, or do something live. Their viewership is pretty static at this point, making their shows more compelling by adding a bit of spontaneity, and unpredictability isn't going to push viewers away.
Make your guests a little uncomfortable, they're only there to promote some movie or TV show. Don't stray away from smart humor, long-form inside jokes, or pretaped goofiness. Everybody's in L.A. proves the status quo isn't required and audiences, especially younger audiences, want to see something they've never seen before.
It's yet to be seen if Netflix will ask Mulaney to come back for a second run the next time there's a festival, but for the sake of the purity of this show, I hope he declines. Actually, give another comedian a crack at creating a live show during the festival. There are brilliant minds across the comedy world and Everybody's in L.A. has shown there are a multitude of ways for them to shine.

Hell yeah bill hader!! So this is the most random ass mix of characters ever, but can I ask for Barry Berkman, Erik Lensherr, Will Graham, Hannibal (NBC version) with a gender neutral s/o who (this may sound cringey but I am the cringe lord) physical contact helps them feel safe? Like just an arm around their shoulders or something and they're able to relax a little more. (Found out the other day that this is apparently an ND thing, so it explains why that happens to me lmao)
Also completely going of the rails here, but do you write for Chilton or Zeller from Hannibal?
Also I think you write for spn?? So could I add Lucifer from spn to the list of characters for the request if youre comfy with that. If not or if it's too many dw bout it
Also sorry for talking so much this is what happens when you have adhd and are extremely extroverted like me lmao
Hi! I do not write for Chilton or Zeller, I don't like Chilton lol and Zeller was to much of a side character for my taste (though I wouldn't say no to Miss Katz). And no worries for talking to much, I understand! I hope you like it love :)
Tumblr media
Barry Berkman
- lovely Barry does not pick up on your need to be touched at first
- but he does love to stare at you and he realizes soon that your demeaner changes a bit when you are touched by someone you trust
- so he decides to give it a go one afternoon
- you look a little stressed, the two of you are at a party for his acting class
- and he just, puts his arm around you and keeps speaking
- you lean into his side and he's surprised at how much he enjoys your touch
- Barry has always been timid about touch but found that touching you and your reaction to it helped him out a bit as well
- so he did it more often than you thought he would, lots of hand holding and inconspicuous brushing against each other
- it helps you both
Tumblr media
Erik Lehnsherr
- Erik is even more timid than Barry
- but he is smoother
- he picks up on your desire to be held quite quickly
- and he didn't love public displays of what were weakness to him, but every once in a while he would do small gestures
- he would link your pinkies while someone is speaking, he would stand behind you so that his chest was flush with your back
- he decided it was closer to a sign of strength because of how much you trusted in each other (or had to trust in each other)
- and after he decided that it became easier for him
- and nicer for you
Tumblr media
Hannibal Lecter
- Hannibal picks up on it instantly
- he is a good observer after all
- and he will very quickly adhere to anything that you desire
- he isn't quite the type of man to put his arm around you or anything so it's a little surprising when he puts out things like that
- even just holding your hand or keeping his palm firmly on your back
- he can read body language well so he knows when he is and isn't helping
- he is the most able to understand you out of the whole bunch here
- and he will do what he can silently, making sure you are always in a comfortable position
Tumblr media
Will Graham
- him too <3
- it works out because touch really helps the both of you a lot
- he is timid about it at the beginning of your relationship but it eases soon after that when he realizes that knowing you're there helps him more than anything
- he would keep his arms around you forever if he could
- lots of hand holding, lots of ignoring Jack and whispering in each others ears about stupid stuff
- it helps
- his favorite thing to do though is trace things into your back
- just silly things, hearts, little I love you's, stars
- but it's distracting enough to help the both of you while also being inconspicuous
Tumblr media
Lucifer
- he notices! he just doesn't care <3
- like for a long time he'll tease you with it and think that it's funny
- but then he notices that it might actually help you a bit and...fine he supposes
- but then he has to make a big show of it
- holding hands means he's swinging your arm around
- having an arm around you means he has to make you turn where ever he is turning
- it's never something subtle with him
- he doesn't know how to be subtle, he's the devil!
- so instead he just either makes you feel embarrassed or comforted, no in between

Just as we said good bye to 2019, 75 of The Rolling Stones outtakes and such were released for a minute on You tube.  The thinking seems to be that the tracks which could be found under 69RSTRAX were ‘released’ before public domain sets in.

I am so sick of the multiple pens it takes to sign the documents when they sign something into law etc. You are wasting our money signing a letter at a time, politicians just so U can give some crap as a keepsake. Let’s have a real signature! I don’t think the average person would be allowed to sign official papers that way.
*****

*****
The Golden Globes had some very deserving winners like Succession, Brian Cox, Laura Dern, Olivia Coleman, Patricia Arquette and Joaquin Phoenix. Tarantino was honored for his writing. I think the best dressed were numerous this year. There was hardly a wrong choice except for J Lo, Thomasin Mckenzie, Ryan Seacrest and Beyonce. I loved Joey King, Michelle Pfeifer, Kaitlin Deaver, Rose Leslie, Cate Blanchett, Ellen and Portia, Phoebe Waller- Bridge, Cynthia Erivo, Eddie Murphy and Paige Butcher, Brad and Leo, Zoe Kravitz, Helen Mirren, Annabelle Wallis, Lisa Lu, Bill Hader, Kerry Washington, Lisa Bonet, Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson, Patricia Arquette and Nicole Ansari-Cox.
*****
The SAG award also had some very well dressed which included Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams, Lupita Nyongo, Zoey Kravitz, Millie Bobbie Brown the Schitts Creek cast and Patricia Arquette. Christina Applegate was a bit too old school but she rocked it. The people on the SAG carpet were very chatty.  Parasite was named best cast. Other winners included Zellweger, Joaquin, Sam Rockwell, The Crown, Laura Dern and Dinklage. I have not seen The Morning Show but I was a bit shocked to see Jennifer Aniston win over Jody Comer, Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Coleman or Elizabeth Moss. This was an award from her fellow actors so I suppose they wanted to send her some love. Her ex Brad Pitt won as well and went on and on about himself.
*****
The Grammys were pretty somber with a lot of ballads and the sadness of the death of Kobe Bryant that day. Aerosmith refused to let drummer Joey Kramer play with them and many found the performance a mess. A wonderful moment was Tanya Tucker and Brandi Carlile with their song that went on to win best country song. Tanya Tucker won best country album. Other winners included Billir Eilish, Lizzo, Elvis Costello and the imposters, Gary Clark Jr., Nipsey Hussle and John Legend, Willie Nelson, Michelle Obama and Dave Chappelle. I had no love for the fashion of Ariana Grande or Rosalia. My best dressed were Lizzo, Camila Cabello, Elle Mai, Jameela Jamill, Billy Porter, Bebe Rexha and Alessandria Ambrosia.
*****
Roman Polanski’s An Officer and a spy captured the most noms at France’s Cesar awards.
*****

So there is a story that many Puerto Rican’s have had to move to the continental U.S. (mostly Fla.) because of the lack of help they have received from the current administration. Now, they can only vote in primaries in Puerto Rico but when they settle in other places they can actually VOTE for President. Lesson: Help Others!
*****
A Federal court just affirmed an injunction preventing the Trump administration from discharging air force members living with HIV. It is hard to keep up on all the despicable things this administration is doing.** Scary Clown 45 thinks he is responsible for low cancer rates. They have been steadily going down anyway. He wants a 4.9 bil cut in medical research, 897 mil cut in National cancer institute and a 763 mil cut for the CDC. Luckily it didn’t happen.
*****
Apparently before the impeachment trial began, Trump’s legal team gave thousands of dollars in contributions to Moscow Mitch, Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz. What a sad time for this country. KEEP INVESTIGATING ANYWAY.
*****
A new immigrant prison just opened in Baldwin, Michigan, run by GEO, a for profit prison company.
*****
The wall is costing about 20 mil a mile and the 100 miles or so completed have mostly been repairs to existing structure. When G W Bush was in office the cost was about 4 mil a mile.** About 30 feet of the wall feel into Mexico due to high winds.
*****
Season 7 of Grace and Frankie will be the last.

The White House streamed a sermon from the Holy City Church of God in Christ in Memphis. The event that VP Pence attended for the MLK holiday was led by a pastor who claimed that our gay friends were possessed by demons.

Days alert: Loved Kristen’s call back to Rosemary’s baby again when talking about little Andy or Jenny. I can’t believe that in those same flashbacks we learned what a horrible Mother’s Day they had.  How could so much go wrong in 1 day? ** Hooray, More Tony and Anna!! ** The heartbreak of John and Marlena and the evil of the brainwashed really harkens back to the heyday of Days.** I wish that the baby mix up story would bring Tate and Theresa back to town! It is time for she and Brady to get back together!
*****
Rudy has started a podcast.

I am often not a fan of tradition (royal, religious or otherwise) but I admit it gave me great comfort to see the articles of impeachment walked carefully to the Senate chamber. We still have a little bit of order amidst all the chaos of the Trump era.
