there are so many instruments for me to learn and not enough money in my savings i fear

was worried i was leaving TOO early and wouldn't spend long in the boutique and would be left hanging around before i could go over to my friend's house but i wanted to account for parking which thankfully there was a space in the free lot bc i didn't wanna park on the street

but anyway ended up spending more time than i expected at the boutique anyway just bc i had So Many things to try on and a couple things i tried multiple times just really debating it (felt bad because it was busy in there and i guess there was a bit of a wait in the dressing rooms, i rarely go shopping on saturdays and i guess since they had a special sale it was extra chaos), did find both the dresses i was looking for, but only one was in my size (insane to get that in a large and the other would've needed to be a small like yes one is fitted and one is not but STILL i hate that clothing sizes are such a guessing game even more with dresses i think) and the other isn't in that size on the site i guess i could've asked if they might have it in stock at another store but i just didn't wanna take the time when i had to go, but i have it set to notify me if it comes back online so that's something

but anyway when i went to try on she asked about jeans and i was like okay whatever (that's the thing about stores like that is they try to convince you of stuff like sometimes it's not too aggressive but ya know still) and she got me a white wide leg pair with lining and i didn't look that hard at them bc 1. they're like $80 and 2. that wasn't what i was looking to get, their deal was $35 off your purchase, not tiered or a percentage off so it's like more than two items would've been so expensive, but idk if they were meant to be cropped on a regular person (the way some midi skirts and dresses are just maxi length on me) but they hit at the bottom of my leg rather than being too long like i honestly did not hate it and i've basically only worn skinny jeans since i was 12, i did NOT like flare jeans and don't understand how people wear them unless they're really tall/wear heels like they'll just drag on the ground and you can't cuff them the way you can skinny jeans or other tapered jeans, i have one secondhand pair that i think are maybe straight leg but other tan that it's alllll skinny so it's like okay well maybe i CAN consider other things more likely at american eagle or somewhere who has extra short options so they are the right length without requiring heels but it was just so unexpected like oh these are actually kind of nice, i should've looked harder to see how much the lining really worked because if i could wear white jeans without thinking in advance about the right underwear that would be so great tbh

but i got one of the dresses i wanted (the one thing i don't like is it has tie straps and i would rather the normal adjustable straps but i have done it before) and then a pretty spring jacket that was on sale, got my coffee, spent a couple hours at my friend's house and got to catch up and meet her sweet little baby (far too late omg she's almost a year old) and go for a walk together and it was all in all a pretty lovely day

things start to come together - eddie enrols in community college and gets a part-time gig in a music store and you take an entry-level job in the industry you've always wanted to

eddie is in pure bliss tbh he just loves coming home to you and the first thing he always does is wrap his arms around you and tells you that he loves you

Okay, so I kinda wanna know your thoughts about how weird the fandom portrays the bat characters. Canon is ... not my favorite, but it actually offers a lot of nuance to the characters that I think makes them all interesting. Unlikable, but interesting. I noticed fanon tends to boil the batkids all into these superflat caricatures. Like, cereal obsessed manchild Dick Grayson or bad boy who's literal crimes are only because of the lazarus pit Jason Todd. Its not really a major problem, just weird

Oh I have a LOT of thoughts about this. I try so hard not to shit on how other people interact with content because like, it’s comic books! We’re all just here trying to make the best out of a mess of stuff and have fun, but admittedly a lot of fanon stuff drives me fuckin’ nuts as someone who reads a ton of comics.

Like, I like memes, obviously, I draw tons of memes with the batfam (+ yj) characters and make lighthearted jokes etc etc, and honestly if it’s just for jokes then I don’t mind people having whack interpretations of the characters quite as much. The thing that drives me up a wall though is like... when serious works and analysis and discussion are very clearly based on just the fanon interpretations without any bearing on canon aside from what you could skim from a wiki page, and it’s spoken like it’s fact! There’s ‘having fun with jokes that aren’t taking things that seriously’ and then there’s ‘blatantly mischaracterizing based on misinformation’. Way too often I see things fall into that second category.

Now, a lot of people in the batfam fandom don’t... actually read comics (or at least not frequently) and that’s not even a bad thing necessarily, like you’re 100% allowed to enjoy content however you want to! (I don’t wanna be gatekeepey, especially since comics are confusing to get into)

But the problem is that when a lot of people aren’t reading the comics, then the people who do’s opinions have a lot more influence if they’re loud enough. All it takes is one person who read something and interpreted it a specific way that might not even be correct, and then it can echo chamber and suddenly half the fandom thinks it’s 100% canon that way because ‘oh so and so said that and they actually read it’.

I also think that’s a problem with the popularity of out of context panels/blogs, while they are super funny sometimes, when people make assumptions about characters based on just a few things without context... it can lead to problems. If enough people say something enough times people just... start to think it’s true, even if it exists entirely devoid of context which changes the meaning.

Like, for example, according to canon there’s no actual confirmation Tim stalked Batman on foot for an extended period of time! We know from Lonely Place of Dying that he followed him once to get a picture to convince DIck that he still needed a Robin. Otherwise his ‘stalking’ & how he figured out Batman’s identity was more through media appearances (like newspapers and tv). This is wildly different from the common fanon idea that little Timmy was sneaking out regularly to follow Batman & Robin around with his camera.

I primarily blame Geoff Johns for this misconception because of these panels in in tt 2003 (from issue 29)

But like, think about it for a second, literally how would Jason know that? This is one of the first times he’s ever interacting with Tim, and he was dead/catatonic when that would have been happening! He is either making a wild assumption or perhaps Talia told him this when she told him about Tim, whichever of those it was it’s secondhand information not something he witnessed. Taking his word as fact here makes no sense, he was just trying to get under Tim’s skin while fighting him. But seeing those panels out of context if you haven’t actually read Lonely Place of Dying/only read a vague summary of it, and don’t necessarily know the details of the Jason situation, it could absolutely lead you to believe otherwise!

Dick as a cereal manchild is a weird one because like... okay yeah sure he likes cereal, I can think of like two panels I’m too lazy to find right now off the top of my head of him having it, but... that’s not something we see all the time! Its not like Ollie & his chili (which IS a running joke- seriously I have not read that many Green Arrow comics but the amount of times I’ve seen that man bring up chili in just in the few things I have read is wild. there’s even an official recipe. his chili has it’s own dc wiki page). Then, because Dick isn’t quite as emotionally closed off in the same way the rest of the batfam tends to be, people project literally all the pent up feelings onto him, making him this hug-crazy crybaby manchild... again it’s just very clear people who perpetuate those ideas (outside of like, maybe as jokes) haven’t actually fully read that many comics with him. I’d also even blame the Young Justice cartoon version of Dick for some other traits fanon Dick has, bc that version of him is def a bit of a Hot Mess™️ once he’s Nightwing 

Jason I understand misconceptions about probably the most because of how wildly inconsistent his writing was before the new 52 and how consistently Not Great it was once Lobdell took over. Jason’s one of the few characters I have read like, 90% of appearances for so I’m speakin’ from experience here. But still... acting like Jason as Red Hood is just a ‘bad boy rebel’ that could have a relatively happy connection with the whole Batfam is fun but unrealistic. You can not blame everything on the lazarus pit... he still has killed people! Lots of people! Willingly! Yes he has reasons and when he’s being written well it’s clear that he’s not just ‘random murder happy’ but rather ‘I kill when I feel they deserve it and that it’s necessary’ which is what keeps him an anti-hero rather than a full fledged villain most of the time, but that still keeps him so at odds with the rest of the Batfamily! Writers in more current continuity have had him compromise by only using rubber bullets in Gotham so they can have him interact with the family, but he’s still killed and will do it when he deems it necessary.

Also like... at the time of Under The Red Hood in the comics... theoretically... he hadn’t even been in the lazarus pit for well over a year. Go read Lost Days (it’s short! And except for the thing with him & Talia towards the end of the last issue it’s pretty good!), he spends a lot of time traveling the world and learning things/training before the events of UtRH. Yes you could interpret there still being some Lazarus influence going on there but I think the movie version of UtRH especially leads people to believe there’s a lot less time between his dunk in the pit and his first actions as Red Hood.

Fanon also has a lot of ideas about pit madness that vary wildly from what we have seen in canon, like yeah it’s been said to be a thing to some extent, but there’s not really the Danny Phantom Glowing Green Eyes™️ or anything like that... it’s fun to explore cool new ideas for sure but I just think it’s important to recognize the distinction between things that are actually canon and things that are popular fanon. (Also there are things that fall somewhere in between, there’s definitely stuff that isn’t 100% confirmed canon but could still be plausible/has been hinted at by some writers/is only canon in some settings)

Other things that drive me nuts are ‘quiet does-no-wrong angel Cass’ and ‘the Normal One™️ Duke’ because those just make literally no sense if you’ve read any comics with either of them... but fan content either does those versions or just completely ignores their existence a lot of the time! So! That’s a whole bigger problem!

In general though, this is fandom it’s not like this... matters that much on the grand scheme of things in life, we’re just people on social media talkin’ about comics. And this kind of misconception/flattening of characters does happen in literally every fandom ever. But it still does suck to see characters that have a lot of nuance and interesting history to play around with get reduced to a few traits that aren’t even actually that relevant to who they are.

not to throw my two cents /now/ but for shows like aot (I personally stopped after s2 and i havent rly considered picking it up again yet), there definitely are problematic elements and depictions that should be called out when necessary—and we need to especially listen to those whose identities were unfairly treated. anime and manga aren’t innocent of problems, as are the artists behind it :,)

I won’t lie, japan still continues to be sketchy w how they teach and treat their history, but ig we as watchers/readers these media can remain critical of what we consume ? the act of watching smth w fascist elements doesn’t mean you condone it ! and choosing not to watch or support (i find these to be different things) bc of those problematic elements is also valid.

oH and I personally don’t rly like aot either from what I’ve been seeing LMAO as a person who dedicated 2 years of high school to extensive studying of history it’s just :\\\\\\ I think all the points have been made by ppl before me, and by you!! 

hello miss yuki!! first of all, i think the idea that people can’t consume Problematic Media is. is stupid because. humans are capable of critical thinking DJLSDALKJ that’s like... our thing. and just because something’s ‘problematic’ doesn’t mean there’s nothing valuable to draw from it? and by that, i mean... sometimes i specifically seek out things i know i’ll disagree with so i can actually talk about it properly, instead of relying on heresay. 

i guess it’s like the jk r*wling thing. do i think people who enjoy harry potter are militant transphobes? no! do i think it’s a bit shifty to spend money on harry potter merch that isn’t secondhand and is therefore putting coins in miss transphobes pockets? yes! there’s difference between consuming and supporting for sure. 

people have complicated relationships with media and internet discourse tends to make things too black-and-white. where do we draw the line? does resonating with shinji’s story in neon genesis evangelion mean you now support sexualising underage girls? does enjoying harry potter mean you condone fatphobia? does enjoying my hero academia mean you hate the lower classes? 

but at the same time, if someone wants to steer clear of something because of those kinds of things, they absolutely have a right to and neither them nor their intelligence should be insulted for that. a lot of people like to throw around “oh you just don’t understand” as an insult and honestly, Shut Up. leave people be.

ANYWAY aot 

yeah a lot of my problems with aot come down to isayama using a metaphor that isn’t even his to draw on. even if the pernicious aspects are unintentional, they’re still harmful. and also, it’s pretty obvious that isayama’s done his research? with how well the story emulates certain facts in history (and even referencing the madagascar plan hh), there’s no way isayama doesn’t know what he’s talking about. and you can’t really brush up on your knowledge of wwii without the whole antisemitism thing, so... 

but i think an issue i have with a lot of the criticism towards aot is that it comes from a very Western perspective; and i get that to a degree, but it’s also important to think about where the author comes from and who he’s writing for. that doesn’t exonerate any of the problematic aspects to any degree, but context is. well, sometimes it’s everything 

for example, i don’t think the question is so much “is isayama a nazi” as it is “is isayama trying to justify japanese expansionism” because while both are awful, one question is more relevant to what he’s likely to believe (even in the infamous twitter screenshots, he pretty staunchly seems anti-holocaust). i think ethnocentric criticisms muddy the water. 

i’m a dual major in anthropology and history, and while that absolutely doesn’t give me authority, it means i tend to focus more on this sort of thing? there’s no way isayama could’ve known that attack on titan would become so... global? and an issue with episodic things of any nature is that it’s almost impossible to analyse them in their whole until it’s finished. aaaand in most cases, that takes years.

so regardless of what isayama intended, that means there are still right-wing groups that love aot and see it as a metaphor for the great replacement, or there’s people who see it as a justification to abandon pacifism, and so on. but there are also people who see it as a staunchly anti-war story, or a narrative about the cycle of hatred. 

YEAH w the watching vs. supporting, i’ve actually been streaming aot on gogoanime because i didn’t know what i’d think of it when i started, even though i have an animelab and crunchyroll subscription. the question is, am i giving it social capital by discussing it online? some would say yes (i’ve got a platform, and just talking about it in general gives it affluence), some would say no (even if i have a platform, it’s small in the grand scheme of things, and how many people are actually reading my mini essays?)

in this post, i would like to present my thesis on why the song metaphor by the crane wives belongs to goro akechi.

"i've gotten good at leaning on metaphors": goro's speech as the detective prince is very flowery, exaggerated, and calculated, in order to please the crowds of people with their eyes trained on him at all times. public appearances, television shows, and interviews are all very important for his image, and as such he's forced to adapt his speech and choose his wording carefully to appease those watching. robbie daymond especially does a very good job of vocally pushing the line of politeness into a tone that sounds just a bit too sugary to be genuine, but not something u would notice unless u were listening closely.

"i've gotten good at living on someone else's page": much like the first line, this one can also refer to goro's public image. because he's put an immense amount of work into his life as the detective prince, he aims to please. or at least, he needs to act as though he does. in order to keep up appearances, he needs to be able to get a read of those around him and keep himself on the same wavelength as them. this also applies to shido—not only does goro need to please his fans, but shido as well, in order to stay one step ahead of him. goro is purposefully putting himself on eggshells every day of his life, and in order to keep that up as well as keep himself safe, this is what he has to practice.

"i cut my teeth on secondhand sentiments": goro is often forced to follow a script, or at least an embellished, public-friendly version of his own thoughts. the things that he says when acting as the detective prince are rarely ever his own thoughts as they would be presented in normal conversation. goro has to hide his true opinion of the phantom thieves behind crowd pleasing buzzwords, keep up appearances by catering his opinions, and even quotes philosophers and other literature ("to paraphrase hegel"). the things that he says as detective prince goro akechi are rarely ever entirely his own, and he's gotten very good at tailoring his speech.

"you can't trust a single thing i say": this one, i think, is fairly self-explanatory. the "you" doesn't just apply to the phantom thieves, but to those goro works with as well. what is it he says to sae; "to trick your enemies, you must first trick your allies"? he uses deception to get what he wants, but his primary motivation for it is to move his plan forward, and to protect himself. obviously, if he were honest with shido, he would've been killed on the spot. goro's proficiency with lies isn't just a tool he uses, but a defense mechanism as well. bc of his fear of and difficulty grasping the concept of opening up to someone, through that skill, he is able to keep himself closed off and in control (that is, until he meets akira).

"i keep my closet free of skeletons": this one strikes me as irony, personally. goro's closet is so full of skeletons that it's practically bursting at the seams. but as the detective prince, something like that just isn't allowed. he needs to play the part, otherwise he pays the price. as himself, as goro akechi, he's got so many skeletons in his closet that he probably can't open the door anymore. but as the detective prince, he has to uphold an air of perfection that seems unattainable to others. goro as the detective prince is the epitome of the culture behind the idolization of celebrities, and the way others place and expect them on pedestals of something near godhood, far above the rest of the world.

"cause i'm much better at digging graves": well, goro akechi is certainly no stranger to the art of killing someone without a trace. we have no idea how many shutdowns or breakdowns he induced over the course of his professional relationship with shido. but i also think this lyric in tandem with the one right before it could relate to goro's tendencies towards repression; the idea that he cannot and should not have any "demons" or "skeletons"—such as past traumas, meaningful relationships, or feelings that he's jammed down and shut the closet doors on, if u will—bc since vengeance is his only objective, then digging graves is his primary task, or the only thing he's good for, in his mind. the word skeletons doesn't have to represent mistakes specifically, but could also refer to how goro views his own heart and how he deals with his emotions. something like, he feels he shouldn't deal with all that turbulence, bc he's far better at warping it into anger—something that he's used to dealing with, and can easily rationalize. the more complicated emotions, not so much.

"but i always dig up bones in your sympathy": this is where i start connecting things to goro and akira specifically. another definition of sympathy entails two people who share an understanding of each other. doesn't that sound like goro and akira to u? so, if u take these lyrics to be from goro to akira, it feels to me like this one could represent his regrets/desire to leave his situation. according to rank seven of his confidant in royal, we know that goro is practically screaming for help before the events of sae's palace. unfortunately, as the player, we are not able to save him. but i think this lyric could represent his desire to connect with akira despite his better judgement—"dig up bones," as in; i'll still arrive at the decision to bury them in the first place, but bc we have an understanding, i'll show u as well as i can that i do not want to be doing this. and that's exactly how rank seven with goro plays out, through the metaphor of a billiards game.

"i can't trust a single thing you say": this could refer to the fact that both goro and akira are withholding truths from each other throughout their relationship, and since they are of equal standing, the same deception that applies to goro would apply to akira as well, albiet in a far different way. however, i can also see it as an unwillingness on goro's part; he feels as though he cannot trust akira not bc akira is truly lying to him, but bc there's no other way for him to rationalize the fact that akira cares for him and wants to spend time with him. as goro akechi, not the detective prince. goro can't trust the kindness akira extends to him not only bc he's used to conditional love (shido, foster parents, etc.), but also bc he doesn't feel as though he deserves it. goro does not have a very high image of himself, as we see later on, and it's easy to see throughout his confidant that he cannot quite understand why someone would want to spend time with him, and not the perfectly crafted version of him that he presents to everyone else.

"don't look too hard, cause you won't like the scars he left in me": the "he" here refers to shido. shido is the sole reason for all of goro's trauma and hardships. he has scarred goro more than anyone else in his life. and goro's sharing of these traumas is very limited: he opens up seemingly out of nowhere, before immediately retreating under the guise of things like "oh, that isn't like me," or "oh, am i bothering u?" such as the scenes that take place in leblanc and the bathhouse. goro cannot fathom the fact that someone (akira) would wish to get to know him, as he is, so he assumes that a normal interaction between friends is somehow too much transparency, and keeps himself at a distance. he mistakes his feelings for akira as hatred, right? obviously, that's entirely the wrong word to describe them. but if goro himself believes that he hates akira, he would likely believe akira to hate him as well; as evidenced by the fact that the dialogue options which give u the most points are the ones where u mention ur "rivalry"—bc again, goro cannot rationalize his emotions as anything other than negative; anger, hatred, etc. it's far easier for goro to blurt out the words "i hate u" rather than "i love u," or "i care for u," isn't it? and this is how he keeps himself at enough of a distance, although simultaneously feels himself drawing closer. emotional closeness is not something goro is well versed in, and bc goro has built his image on being talented and skilled, he refuses to reveal his shortcomings.

"i've gotten good at making up metaphors": the words here are only slightly different than the ones at the beginning, which i think works for goro's further descent into his deal with shido, and subsequent difficulty. instead of "leaning" on metaphors, he's completely making them up. it's more drastic, which could represent a sort of desperation. almost as if he's losing his touch—which we do see after the events of sae's palace, during the tv interview where he monologues internally about his backstory, and we start to really see how damaged he is. goro is frazzled and distraught, enough for it to visibly show, something he prided himself on being able to avoid.

"i've gotten good at stretching the truth out of shape": again, the same situation as before. similar to the beginning, with slightly harsher wording. the lies that goro is immersing himself in are getting more intense, and almost impossible to separate from. his "murder" of akira is a turning point, in a way; akira is the first and only character we see goro kill in what he believes to be outside of the metaverse. he's not only stretching the truth out of shape, but he himself is bent out of shape as well—this stuck out to me on my ng+ run; his sprites in the scene just after akira is reported to be dead from him to shido are very unsettling and absent, as if he's almost completely zoning out. it's a very jarring scene to watch, and i think at least part of that has to be due to the severity of his actions.

"and all these words are sweet and meaningless": this feels to me, if we're going by the timeline i've been suggesting throughout all this, like it's directed at shido. now that akira is dead and the phantom thieves are no longer a threat to goro's plan for revenge, he can focus his energy back on his original objective. goro lays it on incredibly thick in his scenes with shido, so much so that it sometime surprises me that he didn't realize shido was onto him. again with the more intense wording here, which fits with the events i'm corresponding it with.

"you can't trust a single thing i say": now this wording is exactly the same as the first time, but given the progression of everything i've talked about, i take this as a sort of last word to both shido and akira. goro intends to follow through with his vengeance no matter the cost, and this could read as a final nail in that coffin. the song repeats this lyric four times, as well. if i wanted to keep it up all the way up to the engine room scene, and go completely off the rails in the process, i could say that the first iteration of this line is an affirmation to both shido and akira that his revenge takes precedence, therefore it would be stupid to trust him. the second is an affirmation to himself that he is in fact doing the right thing, and everything will pay off in the end, that this is just the way things are supposed to be, as always. the third is a kind of plea, born from confusion, after he's defeated by the theives and they offer to bring him with them to take down shido, an offer he cannot fathom the reason for extending. a sort of "why would u trust me" in the form of "u shouldn't trust me." and the fourth would refer directly to goro speaking to his cognitive self; as he decieves the deciever, making it seem as though he is running back to shido only to close the bulkhead door and resign himself to his "noble" sacrifice.

i hope at least some of this makes any semblance of sense. put this song on ur goro playlists, goroboys.

As tests started to rear their heads, students around Namimori were left to find time to study, struggling to handle it at times.

While usually in one whole group, one Miura Haru has decided “sometimes us girls need to spend time together, too!” and set up her own little study session.

While Kyoko could spend time studying in the day, as Namimori Middle’s tests were on a different date to Midori’s, she couldn’t stay the night with you and Haru. When done, she packed her things, wished you luck for studying and bid you both farewell.

The studying after that didn’t last much longer, and with some time still left until Midori’s test in comparisons to Nami-chuu’s, Haru had decided on her own she was done with studying. You couldn’t blame her. Kyoko seemed to be the one that kept you both focused.

As night came around, the studying session evolved into the sleepover part of the event. It had been a while since either of you had just spent time in pyjamas, lounging around on pillows and doing whatever you wanted.

You couldn’t be surprised when somehow the topic of conversation slowly steered into that about boys. Haru had a tendency to do so.

“Eh, no... There’s not anyone I like right now.”

Haru stared up at you before huffing out a laugh. “That’s true! There’s no way anyone our age would be worth giving my first kiss to.”

She waved her hands around, sighing pretty obnoxiously. “All the boys are... Won’t they probably just break our hearts anyway? It’s not worth it!”

You nodded a little in agreement, before shifting your weight a little nervously. “Well, what if...” You looked away when she gave you her attention again. “Does it have to be a boy...?”

“Y-You know, because none of the boys we know are that great, and those who are aren’t really our type, right?” You mumbled quickly, waving your hands in front of your chest.

Haru seemed to think this over for a few moments, weighing her options. She shot up into a sitting position and nodded firmly, just once. “You’re right! It shouldn’t be that bad if it’s another girl you know, right?”

“Besides, it can be like practice, or something, and we won’t have to worry about wasting our first kiss!” She seemed to be rambling a little.

You breathed out a little in relief. She was embarrassed, too.

“So what if we just... make it each other...?”

She held your gaze, as if trying to find something. Whether she found it or not, she nodded.

“That sounds okay...”

It was tense, and you both were shuffling around on the mattress, fiddling with the linen nervously.

“U-Um... You should come closer, then.” Your voice was quiet, and close to wavering.

Despite it, Haru inched closed to you, your knees bumping in the process. She could feel her heart beating so hard, she was worried if she got too close you’d hear it, too.

While she lifted your head up a little more, you made the first move to get closer, your noses brushing.

Her eyes were so beautiful.

She seemed to find some courage, and Haru was the one who made contact first, and you visibly jumped in surprise.

It only lasted a couple seconds, but she didn’t pull too far back. She blinked slowly, holding her breath. That was nice.

“I... think real practice would be good,” she mumbled softly. “Right?”

You nodded quickly, cheeks burning. “Yeah... Can... Can I kiss you again?”

“Yes.”

You lifted your hands, a little shaky, to rest on her cheeks and pull her closer to you once more.

This time when your lips pressed together, you felt yourself relax a little more. Your nerves were shot, but you found that Haru seemed to soothe them.

Was this right? You didn’t really care. It was practice, wasn’t it? It was practice. Practice.

Her lips were so soft. Of course they were; she took immaculate care of herself. Were yours soft? What was it like for her?

You realised your eyes had been closed when you had to open them after Haru pulled back a little to breathe.

Haru was still before shuffling closer to you, enough that her thighs sat on yours, and she wrapped her fingers around your shirt.

She pecked your lips again before mumbling, and through the haze you had to strain to hear her.

Steeling your nerves, you moved your hands to rest on her waist, only for you both to jump and pull apart when an intrusive ringtone cut through the silence.

Hi! Ive been getting over my internalised ableism and come to accept that I really should get a wheelchair sometime soon so I've been browsing places like gumtree trying to see whats out there and I just feel so lost. I have no idea what makes a (manual, self propelled) wheelchair good, or what I should be looking for wrt size, wheel position, foldability, price. Do you know any good resources that might be useful, or places to look, or personal knowledge and experience? Thank you and take care!

Hey, that's so fair to feel lost! Wheelchairs are complex and it can be hard to find resources on what might best suit yr needs when u don't have formal supports. If u can access formal supports, an Occupational Therapist (who specialises in wheelchair fittings) can guide you in that process. If not, I'll give my best guidance for u here without knowing you or your needs. It's gonna be long but still only touches on most aspects so feel free to ask clarifications.

So the different aspects here all interweave, but I'd start with figuring out what your needs are: do u need a lightweight manual chair you can push yourself? a power chair? or will you generally be using it when others can comfortably push you and therefore can get away with a (heavier but cheaper and more readily available) hospital style chair? do you need a folding (non-rigid) to be able to store it relatively flat (like if you want it to fit in aeroplane closets), or does a rigid (but still foldable) manual chair work for your needs (i can fit mine in most car boots easy)? Do you need a higher backrest for support or do you need less of that to have better range of motion in yr arms when pushing yourself?

If you're going for manual chairs, knowing the difference between lightweight everyday vs hospital/temporary chairs is pretty important, especially if yr needs best suit the former. Everyday chairs are generally rigid (so most don't have the X bars underneath, unless they're the super low-profile ones, can explain more on that if needed), and this makes them more lightweight bc it's less metal on the frame. My old (folding) chair I would have completely bypassed if not for the brand name though - it was a Quickie, and I knew the model to be an ultra-lightweight style - so I also recommend looking into brand names (Tilite, Quickie, Mogo if yr in sydney, etc) that you can look out for in your searches. If you're pushing yourself you'll want the centre of the rear wheel to be at least forward of the backrest, or able to be moved there (temp chairs often have them p far back because they care more about you not tipping back than being able to comfortably push).

If yr going for power chairs, what's most crucial imo is looking for keywords in their ad that indicate how the battery might be doing. If they say it's best for indoors, or that it hasn't been used for a while (even if brand new), or outright state that it needs new batteries, that can be a couple hundred bucks or more out of your pocket to get it working. I don't know a huge amount about other specifics to look out for, since I've only gotten one second hand power chair and it was for a friend.

Re: price, I got my first chair for AU$200 on a stroke of luck, and my second was AU$900 haggled down about ninety bucks, both secondhand. most secondhand everyday chairs are somewhere between the two, i've found, but sometimes they break a grand. The chair I got the other day for my friend was completely free, but came with needed repairs that are probably gonna end up totalling somewhere in that price range anyway. Power chairs can be that low sometimes too, but will usually need new batteries in that case unless they say it's recently serviced, and can be up to $1500 for a cheapo one. Sometimes ppl are selling them for tens of thousands of dollars on gumtree but those are high end chairs.

re: sizing, a lot of people selling their chairs won't put up info on the sizing for some reason, so u can pretty reliably know that if someone does, they're selling their own chair rather than someone doing it for them. Those ppl will generally be happier to answer further questions you've got, i've found, but it's always worth asking for measurements if they're not listed. I haven't sized myself properly before, I basically lucked out that my first chair was only like an inch too small and was manageable, and my current chair's only an inch too wide and a bit short for my legs. It does still make a difference - being a bit wide, my current one hurts my shoulders more. Much less than if it was way too wide for me tho. I think to get a general idea of your measurements, just google 'how to measure for wheelchair' or something and follow the steps there.

in terms of other resources, i've done things like spending whole days going down youtube rabbit holes watching people explain and review their wheelchairs to get a better idea of what works for them, especially ppl with the same body stuff going on. @mossdonnatella is in a lot of my fandoms. She is a much better fic writer than she thinks she is!!

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike)

I really ended up disliking Jacob a lot, on Grace and Frankie. But I will say that in the beginning he is very respectful of Frankie’s boundaries and tries to be patient with her, and I did like that.

M - Say something genuinely nice about a ship that you don’t ship (or its shippers, or anything related to you)

I don’t actively ship Jancy on Stranger Things after seeing S1 (I don’t really ship Steve/Nancy either, though…I think I mostly just ship Nancy x happiness) but the moment when her mom knocks on her bedroom door and they reach for each others’ hands instinctively? That is a damn fine understated sweet connection moment and I really enjoyed and believed it.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)

Okay since a lot of my top fandoms are for shows that ended a long time ago, I’m going with One Day At A Time. In fic or in canon, I want to see a lot more of Schneider being Penelope’s BFF and her confidant. I want more serious!Schneider moments bc it turns out the actor rocks at them, and I want to see Pen really get to move on from Victor as her kids get older, I want real confirmation that she’s finally past any possibility of reconciliation with him bc she deserves SO MUCH BETTER.

O - Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of

Randomizing my music gave me “Quiet” by MiLCK feat. GW Sirens and Capital Blend.

Despite the mature meaning behind the lyrics, and probably because I’m watching Stranger Things right now, it reminds me of Eleven, the tiny badass fighting her way to freedom.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)

Alright, I’m gonna invent one right off the top of my head right here and now since you asked. Um… a One Day At A Time AU in which Penelope meets Schneider not as her landlord but as a patient, once she becomes an NP. Doctor/patient “okay if you won’t stop asking me out then get a new doctor so I can say yes” fluff ensues.

Q - A ship you’ve abandoned and why

Lizzington. I’m technically still writing fic for it bc I have a chapter fic to finish, but I haven’t watched the show in years, I avoid content for it, and have no interest in it anymore besides the phantom limb feeling of having been so invested in a ship for that long and making friends around it.

R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships

Well, since I mentioned it earlier, I think I’m the only person ever to watch the scenes Bud and Brianna have together in Grace and Frankie and think “that should really be a thing.” 

Also…Kate/Donna from The West Wing. Based entirely on one scene.

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

I genuinely don’t understand this question, sorry. What’s an ‘example’ of my headcanon, and how does that relate to prompts? If somebody wants to explain this to me, I’ll answer it. 

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)

Yep yep yep. Andy was the leak, not Toby, and that is the hill I will die on always. I’m sure I have others, but that’s the big one.

Game of Thrones, Agents of Shield, Doctor Who (though I finally have started this one!), Jane the Virgin, The Worst Witch, and lots more…I like learning about fandoms secondhand.

Every single one of these tiny Stranger Things children in S1 is the epitome of epic friendship and I love it. Mike jumps off a cliff to protect Dustin and Dustin’s willing to get his teeth cut out to protect Mike and Lucas offers a sincere apology when he’s wrong, something most adults still suck at, and Will tells Mike the truth even when he would benefit from lying and Eleven chooses death to save them all and they are beautiful and perfect and I love them.

tbh i dont read a whole range of fic types/tropes, but i still have opinions so here we go :)

slow burn or love at first sight - I just feel like theres more room for plot with slow burn; love at first sight feels kinda rushed and cliche (tho sometimes that's what you need so nowt against it)

fake dating or secret dating - secondhand embarrassment is a real bitch to me and i often find that fake dating contains a lot of awkwardness that triggers it

enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers - while i love the drama of enemies to lovers, i like relationships where there was already some affection there that can be explored and expanded

only one bed or long distance - sharing a bed is great, but i feel it's so predicable; long distance has more room for unique plot and p i n i n g

hurt/comfort or amnesia - i don't like amnesia stories; they make me sad and activate secondhand embarrassment/cringe mode. Hurt/comfort is fluffier imo

fantasy au or modern au - again, i feel like theres more room for creativity and unique plot; however, it does depend on the time period the canon is set in bc obviously a merlin fantasy au wouldnt be that different whereas a modern au would

mutual pining or domestic bliss - dont get me wrong, pining is always good, but i love the insight into general home life

smut or fluff - cute softness beats yall's weird kinks any day lol

canon-compliant or fix-it fic - honestly, i love either. i love little behind-the-scenes stories set in canon, but when the canon is, tbqfh, bullshit, fics and fic writers are amazing at redeeming the franchise for fans

alternate universe or future fics - i love reading different stories of what happens after the end of canon content, but i love the amazing variety and creativity you can get in AUs

oneshot or multi-chapter - I'll be honest, i have so many multi-chapter fics in my 'marked for later' on ao3, but i just don't have the time or mental energy to get into them. If I'm reading in bed at 2am, i generally only go for the few thousand word oneshots, but i still love long fics and admire people who write 100k+ words of free content simply because they love it

kid fic or roadtrip fic - tbh ive never read a roadtrip fic, but i like seeing how people interpret the way their OTPs would mix and act in a family, even if i am sometimes a bit sticky with non-canon characters

reincarnation or character death - ive never read a reincarnation fic either, but i do enjoy the powerful emotion that can come from the death of a central character, as long as it actually makes sense in the ÷ plot and adds something to the story besides shock factor

arranged marriage or accidental marriage - while there is some humour in accidental marriage, i often find it cringey and awkward. If i had to choose i would prefer arranged marriage, as long as it's consentual and not toxic

high school romance or middle aged romance - tbh it depends on the age of the characters in canon; it can be difficult to reimagine them in different stages of life, but both can be done well

time travel or isolated together - i always find time travel confusing, but both depend on the situation

neighbours or roommates - either can work for the same reasons, but there's something about characters spending all their time in a confined space together rather than just frequent spontaneous meetings and returning to separate homes

sci-fi or magic au - im always a slut for magic; sci-fi is often too scarily feasible in the near future

body swap or genderbend - ive never read either of these, bc body swap seems like it would trigger my secondhand embarrassment and i just really dislike the idea of genderbend bc it feels like disregarding who the characters are

angst or crack - ive never read a crack fic, but i always love some good angst

apocalyptic or mundane - apocalypse stories can be a bit same-old same-old, but they are a classic

fake dating or secret dating [i'm not really into "forbidden" romances,,, and yeah "secret" doesnt always mean forbade, but,, eh. I much prefer a realization over having to hide something]

enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers [this,,, is really hard for me. Ive got a few ships in each that i adore, but i have more in the latter, so we're going with that. theres something really wholesome about bftl--its probably just my inner romantic influencing me]

oh no there’s only one bed or long-distance with correspondence [ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) nah but seriously. I love changing up a norm for a realization. Things are just,, right. And suddenly you notice.]

hurt/comfort or amnesia [99% of the time its this, but theres this fic series called Lover Dearest by @dayevsphil that does amnesia amazingly well. Like. Incredible stuff. And ohmygod shes been writing snippets and ive missed every single one?? Wh--i need to go--]

fantasy au or modern au [honestly its a toss-up, because either can be so good]

mutual pining or domestic bliss [let them piiiiineee ;-; honestly, the other can be written really well too]

smut or fluff [show me something soft and i melt]

canon compliant (missing scenes) or fix-it fic [i love little pieces of universes. Like yes, show me how it fits into the world. But there have been some fics to save books and movies for me]

alternate universe or future fic [au's dudes,,,, so many possibilities... and im not too much into parent! fics...]

one-shot or multi-chapter [either. Gimme. I will read anything from 200k one-shots to 3k multi-chapter and vice-versa]

kid fic or roadtrip fic [as mentioned earlier, not crazy into parent! fics. But roadtrip? Long hours, little space, nothing but time.... let 'em pine]

reincarnation or character death [tbh i don't really read much of either of these. they make me sad :( ]

arranged marriage or accidental marriage [communication and making the best of a situation. We stan. Its usually either great from the start, or they have to work for it. I'm not into "accidents" in plot, and miscommunication as plot point]

high school romance or middle aged romance [high school fics are always weird to me. i dont tend to see the same quality of fic-work done in high school settings. It always makes the characters whiny or too mature for being a highschooler (usually a byproduct of the setting, not the author). Let them be stable/have goals before finding the love of their life]

time travel or isolated together [you and me against the world. Gotta work together. Great for enemies to lovers, but also friends to lovers cause you've got only the person you're thinking about to talk to.]

neighbours or roommates [insert obligatory and they were roommates]

sci-fi au or magic au [okok. Hogwarts au's (and other magic ones) are great. But have u read your faves as astronauts? Because ohmygod. Some people in this fandom are incredible at it.]

bodyswap or genderbend [i dont think i've ever even read a genderbend. I love the art it produces, but bodyswap is always full of shenanigans]

angst or crack [i never read crack. Even though i dont read a lot of strict angst, a lot of really good stories need the angst they have because it adds dimension and integrity to the work (if its the sort of work that needs those things. Sometimes a cuddle is just a cuddle) angst can make things hurt in the best way]

apocalyptic or mundane [i dont read much of either, but apocalyptic runs really close to dystopia, which is one of my favourite genres]
