A few days ago you wrote about being worried your Barriss Offee writings were controversial. I feel that deeply, since I write for her as well. Almost exclusively. Really though you can't mess her up more than the end of season 5 already has. A Muslim and lesbian coded character becoming a terrorist bomber? Yikes. Write her as angsty as you like, feel liberated. Exercise sympathy and sensitivity, of course. She's really a great character with a lot to unpack. I could write her a thousand stories and still not be done.

Yeah, I get that. It's just... difficult. Because how do you separate characterization that builds on the cynicism that was introduced with the terrorism plot?
#star wars#the clone wars#barriss offee#phoenix answers asks#I wrote out all the tags and then realized that they seem really aggressive if you don't already know how my brain works so#this is not me calling out the asker or anything this is just me talking about the role that fanon can play in fandom activism#ngl I wouldn't call her lesbian-coded (saying this as a lesbian)#she doesn't show any attraction so it's easy to project onto her. but her only real interactions with girls are her master and Ahsoka#and honestly the Ahsoka stuff doesn't even have accidental gay undertones#genuinely does feel platonic as heck to me#So yeah she's definitely muslim-coded but imo her sexuality is a blank slate and not coded in any way#Which is mostly relevant because the primary focus of all this IS the islamaphobia baked into the plot#and when talking about the intersection of minority coding and bad plot choices it's oddly common in fandom to put headcanon on#similar levels of coding/baiting (thinking of the bullshit that happened back in Voltron fandom because of fanon violations)#that said there might be something in the books that I'm not aware of?#(I mean Ahsoka got to be bi-coded but that was years after the Barriss stuff was over with so i don't consider it relevant)
