Forgot that i even signed up to do a box office shift for the current show at the theater which i now have a very sour relationship with which ill ramble a bit about under the cut but basically something just came up with my mom where i wont be able to make it to do the box office and i had been dreading it so im just like (completely monotone voice and deadpan expression) oh how terrible. Its so horrible that i cant go do free work for this organization that hates me. So sad. Anyway

Didnt want to really dwell on it when it happened so i didnt post about it but like two weeks ago i did a favor for my martial arts classmate who is a jewlrey artist and sells her work at the local farmers market, she had surgery and needed to rest so i took over her farmers market booth that saturday and the guy next to me was someone i knew- the father of the person from that theater id say i have the most positive relationship with and their parents do a lot of work with the theater and are nice and have never been weird to me so it was nice to have someone i knew in the booth right next to me. Anyway since theyre very involved in that theater they know the more higher ups in that theater board etc etc and anyway the like current owner of the theater came by his booth AND one of the people involved in the performance i did last october too (WHICH I STILL HAVE NEVER BEEN PAID FOR WHEN THEY SAID MULTIPLE TIMES THAT THEY WOULD PAY ALL THREE OF US ACTORS)- i could maybe see the owner not knowing me since ive never been in a show hes directed (although i have auditioned for his shows) but the other lady ABSOLUTELY knows me and would have recognized me. Anyway i wanted to be friendly and at least say hi to them even if talking is hard i wanted to be nice yknow but they just. POINTEDLY ignored me. And i dont think this is me being paranoid or missing a social cue/misreading a situation before. Ive been ignored and isolated plenty of times in my life. They were talking to this guy 3 feet from me and refusing to look at me and then making a point to walk in the opposite direction so they didnt have to walk past me. And honestly at the time i felt like this burning feeling of anger and confusion and hurt where its like i literally have no fucking idea why this group of people have decided that they dislike me and that they dislike me enough to not give me ANY roles in any show i audition for and to only ever ask me to do unpaid shit for them (when they KNOW i live farther away than anyone else) and theres just a whole laundry list of how ive gone out of my way to do everything i can to be helpful and kind and to like be a good part of what i hoped was a cool theater community but in the end i just get exploited, lied to, and then treated like i fucking killed someone. I literally have zero clue what i could have done beyond just generally having visible traits of not being ~normal~ enough for them. It just is frustrating especially when this group is always talking about being progressive and inclusive and shit but i know damn well they treated a disabled actor know who uses a cane like shit and wouldnt cast them bc of that.

Anyway tldr i think im done with that theater. Ive had enough and their whole "theme" this season is "the american dream" and i just am like. Actually fuck that fuck the american dream and fuck the united states i dont want to do theater with neoliberal bootlickers anyway

I’m just thinking about how terribly sad Alicent probably was during this time. Honestly all the targtowers. For Alicent, her son got no justice, and at this point she probably sees no way forward with Rhaenyra. The threat against her family’s safety is at an all time high. Aegon probably feels even more isolated from his family. He already knows he has to marry Helaena which he is against. Maybe even some guilt there bc let’s be real, he was also in the bulling and probably can’t believe it all went this far. Helaena’s probably not feeling great about wedding the either. OKAY LOVE THIS ASK BC I AM SUPER INTO ORNITHOLOGY AND THINK ABOUT THE SEVEN BIRDS CONSTANTLY… literally I have a draft abt what birds they would be saved on my phone

but okay first I honestly do think my favorite part in the stolen century is the best day ever. I’m biased bc I love Taako & Lup so much but it’s just so incredibly sweet the way he plans an entire day of things he knows Lup will love… but also because it’s one of the few times we really see Taako scared. him being terrified when Lup tells him that she’s going to become a lich…. it’s this moment of vulnerability that no one but the audience gets so see. the way Taako doesn’t express how worried he is to ensure that he’s not preventing Lup from doing what she believes is the right thing to do even though he’s scared for her…. combined with “because you are my heart”….. oh that just takes me out

my fav funny bit is a really really hard choice bc so many bits just kill me BUT. the one scene that always gets me is during the eleventh hour when Taako is just shoveling diamonds into his bag and Magnus yells from across the room “Taako!! what the fuck!!!” the delivery of that line is so good

OKAY THEN.. ALRIGHT MY SEVEN BIRD HEADCANONS.

Magnus is a Golden Eagle. hands down. I think it’s usually a safe bet to portray a fighter character as a bird of prey, but also I just feel like it fits him because they’re such dynamic birds and he is proficient in like everything. also they usually mate long-term or for life and like…. Magnus’ devotion to Julia and the fact he never even considered being with someone else certainly fits with that.

Merle is a gray morph Eastern Screech Owl. of course because he chose an owl as his animal during petals to the metal, but also because it feels really fitting for him to be this small bird of prey. Because they’re so little and nocturnal, they tend to not be sighted often, but they’re really strong and fierce little birds despite their stature. I feel like that can relate to Merle being kind of treated like he’s rarely a help, even though he ends up being the one to save the others decently often.

Taako & Lup are Resplendent Quetzals. I‘ve definitely seen other people make this take I promise I know I’m not the first bc of the obvious use of “resplendent” but speaking as a bird enthusiast, Taako and Lup are sooooo Trogoniformes to me. the twins are supposed to be incredibly beautiful in a stand-out way, so making them incredibly flashy tropical birds that most people never get to see in person seems fitting to me. PLUS I think it’s very fun when people draw Taako with long hair and Lup with short hair, and that little detail translates well with the dimorphism in quetzal tail length.

Barry is a Blue-winged Teal to me. partially because I think it’s funny to make the guy who couldn’t swim a duck but also I do feel like it fits him to be a species that doesn’t stand out much - he’s kind of just a guy. like he’s this incredibly powerful magic user and a lich and insanely intelligent, but he also is just a normal guy <3 so him being a decently common migratory duck is fitting, I think. plus the large blue patch on the wings of the males…. bluejeanscore

Davenport has got to be a Barn Swallow. given his role as IPRE captain and his life sailing in imbalance, it’s really fitting for him to be a swallow, as sailors historically got tattoos of them to represent the distance they’d traveled and act as a sort of good luck charm for a safe journey home. + they are seriously just little guys :)

Lucretia would deffo be a Common Loon. so often in art they’re depicted as solitary/sad because of the way their cry sounds but they do travel together, they’re very social birds! I feel like that perception vs reality of their isolation really fits with Lucretia, given that we start the series thinking she’s this mysterious figure who doesn’t even share her name with the boys, but she turns out to be one of the people who loves them most. also, Common Loons are fiercely protective, and I think that fits well with Lucretia’s attempt to cut The Hunger off from their plane

okay okay i have other stuff to write but this is my weakness bc Stannis + Shireen + kiddos i am weak.................. (also i am always delighted to drag more people to our One True King)

This is interesting because 298AC Stannis bitter and tired, and he has a distant relationship with Shireen, in spite of the fact he loves her. This distance is because of a combination of factors, but I think if anything happened to Selyse, Stannis would make a point to try to involve himself in Shireen's life more. He'd be terribly awkward about it and unsure of what to say or do.

Because honestly, he and Selyse were not the best parents to Shireen. Selyse just outright ignores her and considers her a shame and a burden, and while Stannis cares and sees her as his heir, he does little to actually show his affection. Before Edric, the girl's only friend was Patchface.

So ... a stepmother has a lot to deal with here.

First, showing genuine attention to Shireen would be such a huge step. Inviting her to family meals (and dragging Stannis to them because he needs to eat and not spend all waking hours working), telling her "I'm happy to see you today", checking up on her lessons with the maester and asking what she's interested in, asking her questions about herself, and so on. The simple actions of being treated like a person and not some invisible shame would do wonders because she really is a clever girl that wants to know people - see her quick and close friendship with Edric.

I think she'd be very curious about a stepmother, but also resigned about how she might be ignored, especially if a baby comes along. I think as much as Stannis tells others that Shireen is his heir, he never made this known to the girl herself.

Shireen would probably attach herself quickly to a kind stepmother. They'd start to have bedtime stories - aka stepmom starts a book (a history book?? children read these???), and Shireen quickly begins telling her about it. Going out to the gardens and the sea, making faces at the dragon statues around Dragonstone, brushing her hair in the morning, and so on.

I think while Shireen has plenty of book knowledge, she has little on being a lady - her mother decided she wasn't fit for court, and Selyse is not a woman of court to begin with. If Shireen is going to be Stannis' heir, she needs to know etiquette, elegance, social maneuvering, and so on.

Stepmother definitely needs to give Stannis an earful about how unprepared his daughter is in this regard. He has to admit she's right ... he'd also probably feel a lot of shame in what a cold upbringing she's had, considering how vibrant and loving his own parents were.

Also, a big step would be bringing Shireen to court - first when Stannis' vassals gather at Dragonstone, then perhaps small tourneys in the Stormlands before tackling the Red Keep. It's tricky, because you'd want to build her confidence and speaking before subjecting her to the cruelties of King's Landing. It's something she'll have to face eventually as she gets older, but you also want to protect her and keep her safe from it. It makes Stannis anxious because he doesn't want her to be ridiculed.

And he will find out whoever does so and put them at the top of his shit list, theyll never eat lunch at Dragonstone again

And while I feel she wouldn't be terribly interested in dresses and balls and such, she's happy to tag along if her stepmother and Edric are going. I think Stannis would be shocked to see his little girl chatting with the other kids at a table, fitting right in, occasionally turning back to her parents with a smile. At the end of the evening, running up to her father and asking if the son or daughter of Lord so-and-so can come to Dragonstone some day, because she wants to show them the statues and library and grounds.

And if a baby does come along, Shireen would be the most doting and capable older sister. Reading a long history of Aegon the Conqueror to the babe, discussing matters of Dragonstone with them while sitting in the garden ... She's probably the only ten year old you'd trust to hold a baby and watch them. With a serious expression she'll carry the baby to Stannis and say "Father, you need to wish them goodnight!" and won't leave until he does so.

Also sweet grandpa Maester Cressen would be so happy to see this change in Shireen. She reminds him so much of young!Stannis in her isolation and sadness, and he's always regretted that. He probably invites the stepmother to several lessons for Shireen's sake (and to get Edric to focus).

Regardless if the stepmother approaches their relationship as a mother figure or big sister, she'd flourish with the right encouragement. She's intelligent and very capable for her age! I'm also not so sure she'd call her stepmother "mother" in any way - likely "Lady (name)", and then just her name once they're close.

ALRIGHT IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS (shuffles my papers). i’ve gone off about homura’s motivations in depth before but i think it was only in dms/groupchats? anyways i’ll go in order with All the girls bc i think about this all the time as a teenager who grew up mentally ill and had their perceptions skewed because of it, and also i don’t think it’s talked about nearly enough for the others, at least on my blog... so, buckle up!!! this is REALLY LONG!!!! 

3. i tried writing like, an individual thing for every member of the quintet all together in this one ask, but i ended up talking a little too much about homura and now i’m going to split up all the different analysis stuff for each character into the reblogs and work on it every so often! you’re free to kinda skim of course because i really did write a whole novel but here we go!! read under the cut. :3 this is literally essay length btw. i did NOT expect it to get this long but if you want to read it all i’d recommend it but i don’t expect most people to

First: Homura Akemi

okay so i’m going to kind of summarize everything but from the perspective of empathizing with her so if you don’t want to reread a whole recap you can skip to the ending few paragraphs

Summary

first of all, in episode 10, homura’s past is explained for the viewer. she was a shy, unsure girl who had been bedridden for a long time. she was clearly unsocialized, not to mention she went to a catholic school and those can be brutal, esp in japan... that’s all we know about her in that episode, but it’s revealed in one of the drama cds that she was bullied as a child(& further at mitakihara middle), her parents never were mentioned ever (i assume them to either be dead or neglectful, considering she lives alone and unchecked), and in magia record, homura says to natsuki that she’s never had friends before, she hasn’t been on vacation before until the beachside bonds event, hasn’t ever celebrated valentine’s day, has never celebrated new years, etc... 

clearly, she’s missed out on a lot not only because of her sickness and hospitalization, but because of her isolation as a child at school. judging by her demeanor and the way she reacts when madoka comes up to her without being asked to, something like that had never happened to her before. it’s clear to me that madoka was many of homura’s “first’s”, her first friend, the first person who reached out to her, the first person to compliment her name honestly(validating her, disproving her dislike of her name), the first person to regard her so kindly rather than judging her based off of her appearance and demeanor (like other students had apparently done, this is also shown when the other students at mitakihara middle make fun of her for being tired after only being able to run one lap). AND, madoka (and mami, but homura knew madoka better at that time) saved her life, even though homura was so willing to die, just in that moment... i’d assume it made homura feel like someone believed in her even when she was at her worst. it’s really clear by the glimmer in her eyes that these are nice people that made her feel happy and welcome... and then walpurgisnacht came. she didn’t know much about magical girls and just believed in madoka and mami to be able to defeat the witch because she saw them as strong and saw the witch as defeatable, despite its size. and then mami died, right in front of her and madoka... 

this kinda seems headcanon-y when i phrase it this way but it’s practically proven in her actions but i really think homura is scared to be abandoned, especially by someone who was as overtly kind and nonjudgemental to her as madoka... it’s in the way she cries her name and says “don’t go” before madoka runs away to fight walpurgisnacht. OH ALSO, i need to address this one thing really quick because people like to assume that homura didn’t care about mami from the beginning and only liked madoka. it’s not that she wasn’t sad when mami died, she was clearly terrified and didn’t want the same to happen to madoka, also mami LITERALLY WASN’T IN HER CLASS OR HER GRADE so i assume she spent most of her time with madoka considering they were in the same grade and class and probably shared most of their periods with each other... but also, once again, mami is older than both of them and homura probably saw her as more of a mentor/teacher that she needed to impress rather than madoka who was more on her level, i guess?

anyways, moving on... homura had to see madoka die (& experience the crushing guilt she felt for “letting madoka go” even though there was nothing she could’ve done) and literally says “i’d rather you had lived than saved someone like me” ... her self worth is below zero. she makes her wish to be strong enough to protect madoka(because she sees madoka, her first friend, who saved her life which she felt had no worth, as so strong and noble) which causes her to go back in time, etc. etc., you know the deal. okay before i move on to talk a little more abt the timelines and the personality change i’m going to address why it’s reasonable that she’d be attached to madoka.

i mentioned before that homura said herself that she had never had a friend before. just like, put yourself into her shoes for a second. this girl has no idea how to make friends; it was never taught to her. it’s literally rational that she’d get attached to her first ever friendship. it’s not “normal” the way she views madoka, but how could it be? this is her first time having a friend, she’s afraid of being abandoned by her, but she’s had to see her die over and over again anyway. she doesn’t want to lose madoka. even if she doesn’t go about it in the right way, there’s no way she would’ve actually known how to Do relationships. no one taught her. i think that needs to be empathized with more...

i kinda feel like i need to summarize all this just bc if i word it right it kinda reminds you & puts into perspective just how terrible and scary all of this was.

anyway Again, i would skip straight to the end of timeline 3 (where a New Flavor of trauma is given to homura) but i need to first address timeline 2 for a second. it was homura’s first time repeating the timeline, she trained with madoka and mami again, she was still hopeful despite what happened, etc. kinda just bonding further with madoka Again... and then it’s at the end of this timeline that she watches madoka turn into a witch, just in front of her very eyes... and realizes the true fate of magical girls. when she resets the timeline again, it’s up to her to start anew and break the truth to the group when she sees them again. when she tries telling the truth, sayaka immediately shoves this aside, claiming homura was just trying to split everyone up. it’s clear that that hurts homura. (also the little shinies in her eyes were wavering which is anime-code for sad) her feelings were immediately disregarded by sayaka and she couldn’t defend herself, but madoka did for her, and mami tried to diffuse the situation. 

after they all find out homura was right when sayaka turns into a witch, mami kills kyoko and ties up homura in her ribbons and aims a gun at her, and this, rightfully, ignited a fear within homura... madoka is forced to kill mami in order to save homura, leaving only the two of them to fight together. then, when walpurgisnacht comes that time, The Promise is made... madoka tells homura to go back in time and save her from becoming a witch (because she doesn’t want to curse the world that way, she still sees beauty in it) and homura agrees, saying she’ll never stop until she saves madoka, and then... homura has to mercy kill madoka before she becomes a witch. she cries loudly and shoots madoka’s soul gem... it’s literally so heartwrenching and (usually) brings the viewer to tears, or puts something into perspective for them...

then we assume the personality change happens in the timeline right after. this personality change causes a lot of discourse because sometimes it’s seen as kind of irrational, but personally, i think even moemura had at least SOME resent for the world around her considering what she’d been through. it’s madoka’s repeated deaths that finally push her over that edge. i could get further into the coolmura arc but that’d take a WHILE, so i’ll just kind of explain something briefly though -- why homura ended up becoming even MORE focused on madoka. and i’m also going to debunk the claim that homura doesn’t care about her other friends as fast as i can before moving on.

also, ONE LAST side tangent, for those that think homura really did do a 360 degree personality turn are wrong. it’s shown explicitly in homulilly’s labyrinth that there’s this... “core” homura, a shadowy purple silhouette with braids. every time the series depicts homura’s internal self, it’s always glasses+braids, symbolizing her “child” self, who she truly is. she never stopped being that person. she doesn’t want to kill. ...but i can get into that in a rebellion analysis later! this is also shown in wraith arc bc the person inside her soul gem has glasses+braids. anyway let’s get to the next part i’m going to rant about

Homura’s Love for Madoka, but Otherwise Apathy

homura has seen many different, yet all similar, versions of her friends. the first claim i’m going to talk about which i saw brought up quite a few times before is in regards to homura and mami. first of all, homura absolutely still cares for mami, and not just in the “i only care about your life if it affects madoka’s” way. one part that always gets me is when mami ties her up in the series timeline after homura frantically warns her that this witch isn’t normal, to which mami IMMEDIATELY brushes this off, without even giving homura a chance. then, when mami’s ribbons fade away, homura looks horrified and just goes “oh no...” and it’s kind of obvious to me that it was in response to mami’s death rather than madoka’s reaction. this is arguably up for debate i guess because i’ve seen different takes on that reaction and it’s ambiguous, i guess? but i’m about to get into something extremely similar and that’s the sayaka situation, where madoka throws sayaka’s soul gem onto a moving car. homura gasps and immediately pauses time and disappears, running in literal open traffic and climbing on top of a moving car to retrieve sayaka’s soul gem. one could argue that this is ALSO only just because homura wants to save madoka (and kyoko) the fear, but don’t you think her expression would be different? if homura truly didn’t care for sayaka’s wellbeing, wouldn’t she be making an expression more similar to like, “oh, this shit again...” instead of the frantic one she was making in the scene? this kind of thing Also happens when kyoko asks homura to leave while kyoko’s about to sacrifice herself in oktavia’s labyrinth, and homura looks up sadly at kyoko and then back down at madoka, and once she knew kyoko was dead, she just quietly said “kyoko...” to herself. she usually refers to them as [last name, first name], but she dropped that during that moment... it otherwise sounds like a bare minimum thing to do, but keep in mind the timeline we’re shown in the series is implied to be like, the 110th timeline, i think? like, this is the last timeline, she’s worn down, but she still does have empathy -- or at least sympathy -- for the others. she still loves them. 

homura promised to be madoka’s protector, she dedicated her life to her, and also she doesn’t have a choice not to dedicate her life to her anymore, even though that’s not fair to her... homura is in a really hopeless situation and madoka is her hope, and madoka is the one that judges her the least out of the quintet (like saying “i’m sure homura is good” to herself) upon first impression. also okay i mentioned this already in my last post (which you saw) but i’m going to bring it up one more time, homura is not mentally 26!!!!!! she is still 14 mentally!! in order to be 26, you have to have experienced 26 years of new life experience. maybe you acquire that through school, maybe you aquire that through friends, whatever it takes. but homura just repeated the same month over and over, and it’s not like her body (canonically) ages ever. she just kind of gets transported back into her body in the hospital again considering she’s back wearing her braids and pajamas... so, yeah. no mental development there. i also mentioned this here but i’m gonna say it again, that just makes it even harder for her to actually age correctly... it stunts her to 14. imagine being 14 for 10-11 years...

In Defense Of My Own Claims

btw before you think i’m just going full-on radical homura apologist, i’m not explaining all of this to be like “homura made ALL THE RIGHT DECISIONS because her trauma gave her an excuse!!” because like, Obviously, she did a lot of bad things, she killed people, did a lot of callous things, a lot of thoughtless things, a lot of things that make her seem emotionless, etc. but i just have trouble blaming her considering how things ended up, and it’s not like she enjoys killing people. she’s not sadistic... she ends up becoming short with all the others not only because of her (extremely) weakened trust in them, but also because the amount of times she repeated the timeline. i’d imagine it makes her feel like the others can’t truly die because she can just go back and see them again. (this is also why wraith arc/post-tv series must’ve been hard for her because she can no longer turn back time, things are permanent now, deaths are forever) she’s become so worn down that she’ll do anything to escape the loops... also considering she has no choice but to continue? although it shouldn’t be, it’s technically her job as a magical girl to defeat all witches and walpurgisnacht counts. it kills magical girls and tears up the whole city and she’s usually the only magical girl left... her choices, when defeated, are either to give up and die or to go back and try again, and she made a promise to her first ever friend to do just the latter... i just don’t understand how this isn’t easier for people to comprehend, that all of this trauma and stress and responsibility on top of an already traumatized 14 year old does not mix well. ever. she had to figure out all of this by herself.

TL;DR:

homura was a previously traumatized, unsocialized 14 year old with (very)low self esteem & self worth whose first friend (and first love, really, let’s be honest) died in front of her in horrific ways and she watched as she (and the other friends she came to make) drifted slowly apart from her in her endless and futile attempt in saving her from what proved to be an inescapable fate. also she’s 14 and also she’s (canonically) mentally ill and a lesbian. not a monster, not evil, not “psycho”. and that’s that!

Gripe please??

oh, uh, hi! I kind of misled with that post bc it’s honestly not so much a gripe coming from anger as it is from feeling... disheartened I guess? I don’t usually participate in fandom uuhhh at all, and I’ve actually been into Durarara for over 3 years, but have kept to myself and a few friends who know nothing about the series to talk to about it for most of that time. Idk, there’s pros and cons to all fandoms and most of the time I’m content to sit back and observe small nooks without engaging with it in order to get that itch scratched.

I guess it’s because Shizuo and Durarara have been so important to me, and I’ve only grown more attached to it with time that it made me start looking for more content. Which there is thankfully a lot of... except the more content I consumed the more of a hole it left. That there was so much content, but astonishingly little of the stuff I was looking for.

To me Shizuo’s transcoding is as overt as Izaya’s queercoding if not moreso. When such a large part of Shizuo’s story is about feeling a strong resentment and disconnect towards his body for being different and feeling like it’s working against him, and about him slowly coming to terms to make peace with it and love himself. How he has one of the most fragile relationships with his masculinity and people’s perception of it despite being presented as exceedingly hypermasculine. How his strongest need in life is for everyone to accept him and his differences. It’s very on the nose, and I feel some sorta mix of frustration/resentment/isolation but mainly sadness that it’s hardly recognized or represented.

Trans identities and experiences in general are a relatively new territory for people to be aware of so I try not to let it get to me but meh. It’s still there. Especially when it seems pretty hmm common for fandom to overlook that kind of thing with more masculine characters? Especially especially when that character is seen as the more aggressive/dominant one in that fandom’s most popular ship? Again idk, I don’t want to step on toes, but there’s a struggle with wanting to speak up about it while also getting the feeling that it doesn’t want to be heard.

thoughts: It’s funny because most of the characters that I really love are just fucking idiots. So stupid. No thoughts head empty. And like at first glance you’d think the same with Hide, he’s got the look of a real dumbass, but he’s actually a really smart person? He just kind of, hides it. He did say he was like allergic to books once (it’s the adhd, king) but that doesn’t change the fact that he emotionally is actually a very intelligent person. It’s something he’s humble about because I don’t believe he really identifies with the intellectual crowd or sees himself as particularly above average, he just finds it easy to understand things. And he doesn’t ever use it for his own advantage even when it would be totally fine to do so, he pretty much always uses it to help other people and I think he believes if he used his strengths to help himself it would be, like, selfish. Which is a problem of his.

gemder n brand of gay: A lot of people in yonder Fandom like to see kaneki as bi and hide as gay but nah fam you’re off. Honestly I do not care about his Date With Rize in the slightest, that man is a homosexual. Hide is the bi one. (it’s not like this is a requirement or anything lmao i am just Saying also i’m bi and i’m projecting) I can also say with confidence that date with Rize was the only date Kaneki’s ever been on and he was definitely lying to himself. (i just, don’t know how you could look at Haise specifically and for one second think he has ever seen a boob) Hide’s the one who’s probably dated people before and he actually knows what’s attractive, he probably just doesn’t discuss that a lot with Kaneki since the bitch is Closeted and hide knows this. It’s funny because Hide canonically has two dads. Like I think that kind of explains him tbh. Bitch has good parents??? He’s the only one but we love him for it. U know Kaneki spent more of his life at Hide’s house than his own.

And as to gender, like obviously hide’s a guy, but i think he’s one of the few cisgenders who could like... tell you why. He’s well versed in those kinds of issues and has just thought about it a lot I guess? He’s comfortable in his skin and with a conventionally masculine appearance but he could tell you what Boy TM means other than yo macho man dude bro guy

personality type- ENFP-T: I took the fucking test for him and it was like... so easy. Took me ten minutes. 

basically what this means is it just calls him out as a fucken loud ass sunshine boy who has very many emotion and cares way too much about his friend

biggest strength: he’s so good at helping people?? Like I can honestly say if some random person started rambling about their relationship issues to him I’d give him 10 minutes before he had a perfect solution, he had the person crying and being comforted in just the right way. He’s the perfect medium of confident and caring and he’s not just a fucking ray of sunshine on accident, he’s like, mob psycho 100 style actively working to be nice and compassionate. He’s very aware of how his actions affect people and he always knows just the right thing to say, what to do, when to just let things go or when to say them. And Hide will forgive, literally anything, even if someone does something really shitty to him he’ll realize it’s the product of like, unresolved mental issues or something and seek to fix it instead of cutting the person off. It’s... really good for everyone around him. But well,,, not great for him, see below.

biggest weakness: bitch does nOT leave room for himself. Although he is generally a confident person and isn’t very insecure, he knows he’s giving too much of himself and simply ‘pretend i do not see it but in reality i do’. He’s never put himself first and feels more worthy when he makes someone else happy, and it’s really not that visible but it can take a pretty big toll on him. He’ll feel anger and frustration for his problems but eventually he will end up blaming himself for anything that goes wrong and will just resolve to Try Harder. (which, mood) He does problem solve well and he tries to come up with the best solutions to issues but the fact is he just does not prioritize his own happiness within those solutions. He gives too much and it’s fucking killing him.

what he likes most about himself: Although he does have issues obviously, I don’t see Hide as someone who has particularly low esteem of himself. I think he pretty much thinks he has himself figured out and therefore other people’s problems come first. He generally does, think fondly of himself, because most of the time he can fix people’s problems so he’s yknow, a good person. I think he likes his ability to enjoy life and live in the moment, and he likes his connections and friendships with other people. He values emotional connection and he likes that he can easily create and enjoy good vibes. He loves being the one who everyone just... goes to for a good time.

favorite things: I think I heard somewhere that he enjoys dumb american bands without really understanding what they’re saying which seems very on brand for him, but I’m gonna perscribe him some other stuff too. Obviously he likes bright colors and comic books, and places where he can have fun with other people. He generally likes college, even though it’s like, school, and unlike kaneki he actually had a good childhood and he enjoys the places he spent time and formed good memories, he has Nostalgia TM (see unbelievable by owl city hmmm he vibes to that he was born in 1996 or something right i can’t google things) he also just really likes to just, fix other people’s problems but we’ve covered that. 

what he’s doing right and what he’s doing wrong: Hide is doing his best. He’s no less flawed than any of the other characters in tokyo ghoul, it’s just that his strategies tend to involve 100% less murder. Ok no, let me rephrase that, Hide is flawed, but i meant like emotionally, he’s not a war criminal like everyone else. He may seem at first glance like, just, perfect? Sorry for being a simp lmao but I feel like from the outside he’s just got it all together right? He knows what he’s doing and he’s super nice and helpful and smart and humble and just doesn’t have any visible flaws? He... tends to hide any evidence that he would ever be struggling. And that’s not very sexy of him. He feels it would be a burden on others to show pain or ever say he can’t take something on (if someone asked him to do something he’d do it even if he was already mentally at capacity etc) and that’s something he needs to work on. The good thing is that if they got to a point where after Kaneki’s Character Development they got to just... like, be happy and not be separated and everything Kaneki would be good for him because he compliments that. Hide helps him because he needs a lot of like, mental counseling lmao but now that Kaneki’s gone through a lot of that his eyes have been opened more to the fact that Hide hides his problems from Kaneki so if they could just bE HAPPY this is an issue that could be resolved

insecurities: I think Hide kind of believes he’s not allowed to be sad. Cause it’s like, not his job. He’s the source of happiness for everyone else, supposed to have everything together so he can fix everyone else’s problems. he’s not allowed to be in pain or feel bad for himself even though he knows “Boys Can Cry” it’s like, yes boys can cry, not me tho haha lmao it’s not about his masculinity it’s just he’s like “yeah but kaneki’s had it worse” so like if he finds himself in a bad place, he feels inadequate and like... fundametally broken. and it’s. Like. I felt that but also like king that’s not how it works

goal in life: I think he wouldn’t really be able to answer that question. What the truth would be is that he probably wants to do something grand and important that helps a lot of people and kind of changes the world. But he might not really think of it that way, since he’s usually focused more on smaller more isolated issues and he has no idea what he wants to do as a career. He admires activists and people who put themselves at risk but it probably makes him feel inferior that someone else is Doing Something About This Big Problem and he’s just sitting there riding around on his bisexual bike and being in college. (I’d like to say he’s probably changed majors at least a few times,,, that man was like “oh yeah lmao i’m gonna be a comic book artist” but someone said something about how he’s a good therapist and he’s like “brb kinshift i am now a psychology major” lmao.) (hello i am projecting but i’m right) He sees a tumblr post about some issue somewhere and he hyperfixates on it for days until he sees another post about something worse it’s an issue. But I think what he ended up doing was what he wanted to, even if he never recieved any recognition for it the internal sense that he was doing something Right TM in the eyes of history would probably make him cry

how he was raised: I can’t really say much to this because there’s barely any canon on this and the canon that does exist I have completely ignored other than the fact that he has two dads. Bro tbh? He didn’t need any tragic emo backstory I think he had a great childhood. Honestly he’s probably a rich kid. Not super rich but he’s not struggling man. Not gonna lie to you I think the only reason he went to Kamii was because he wanted to be at the same college as Kaneki who probably got a scholarship. Hide, didn’t. (it’s not like he’s not intelligent but I don’t really think that his grades are his biggest priority, the only time he ever pays attention in class is to give kaneki the answers when he’s gone) 

What irks me about the random lore drop in the last chapter about him having a CCG dad that died or whatever- it kind of ruins the whole point for me. Personally I choose to believe he had nothing whatsoever to do with ghouls or the ccg before all that happened to Kaneki. He probably had correct opinions on them, but only like, in theory, it’s like straight people that are like “yeah ofc gay ppl valid” but they’ve never really had any personal experience with any. So when he gets involved in that- the fact is that the only reason he was... was bc of kaneki. It was never more complicated than that to me. YKNOW, SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST, NICE, OK? 

And I think for me that the fact that he could actively choose to be nice and be aware of all these problems when he’s practically got every advantage in life is a lot more important. He didn’t have to be poor or have a dead parent or have a shitty childhood for him to be really genuinely good. I don’t think he’s ever been bullied or anything, but he can still be aware that it sucks to be bullied. I think he was just... raised right. I think his dads are probably pretty fucking baller for him to be such a bro. They taught him the right shit.

General philosophy: Hide is one of the only people in the series for whom the dynamics of right and wrong are not hard to understand. He’s never been required to pick up a weapon or actually truly fight in the CCG, he’s never been really mean to anyone. Of course I can say he’s probably decked a few ppl that made fun of Kaneki in middle school, but haven’t we all. The thing is that though he’s never suffered at the hands of others, everything that’s hurt him he’s gone in fully consenting to it- he can still understand and forgive what everyone else has done. Like bro he’s the literal only one around who’s not like a literal war criminal, but he’s not going to think he’s better because of it, because he understands that if he had been in their circumstances he couldn’t say how he would have turned out. 

That’s why I think it’s so important that he never really had a bad childhood- he’s not better than them for turning out without any blood on his hands, because he was never required to. And he knows that and he goes through every day with all these people who have and is conscious of it. He can’t ever say he’s incapable of hurting other people, because he would have said that about Kaneki before all of it happened. So he’s quite politically correct compared to Kaneki and the others but he doesn’t see things that way.

relationship bullshit: i mean bro i know this is a serious post about like psychological and emotional things but i felt the need to discuss whY does everyone write hide as a bottom I mean like sure he’d bottom if his partner was a top but this is simply not the case with kaneki look at him. how kaneki sees him vs how he actually is: One of the biggest problems in kaneki and hide’s relationship is how in the beginning, Kaneki didn’t really understand at all that Hide could be hiding anything from him. Kaneki’s not good at picking up clues like that in general, but the fact that he was hiding so much himself didn’t help at all. Hide gives off the vibe of someone who has no inhibitions and shows every side of himself without hesitation, and Kaneki really does idolize that. He didn’t realize that Hide could possibly be suffering or imperfect compared to his vision. He sees Hide as practically an angel, and that’s exactly how Hide wants Kaneki to see him, because he doesn’t want to burden Kaneki with his own problems since he believes they’re not as important and they would make Kaneki sad. Kaneki knew Hide wasn’t as oblivious as he seemed, but he didn’t really understand what that meant until too late. The good thing about Kaneki’s character development though is that it then helps Kaneki understand that Hide was suffering because of him and he didn’t want Hide to hide it anymore (lmao). If they’d only executed that point well that could have been really good but well that’s what fanfic is for

how he sees kaneki vs how kaneki actually is: This one’s a lot more difficult, because well. Hide’s very good at knowing exactly how people are in their hearts, compared to Kaneki. But there are definitely some things that he’s not super up on. He wasn’t around for a lot of Kaneki’s development, so most of the time I think he still believes Kaneki doesn’t want to see his pain, which is, simply incorrect, Kaneki would obviously not be happy to hear it but it would tear him up inside to realize he’s been oblivious to it the whole time. He’s grown a lot more mature since he spent most of his time with Hide, and I really think Hide could benefit from being able to open up to Kaneki the way he is now. And well. I think his biggest misconception has to be that Kaneki enjoyed women lmao

Last Song: I’m currently listening to “Falcon in the Dive” from the Scarlet Pimpernel musical on loop. I watched one or two Scarlet Pimpernel movies when I was just barely too young to fully get what was going on, and the story’s held an odd but deep-seated place in my heart ever since. A few years ago I found out there’s a musical and most of the songs are pretty stellar (go listen to “Madame Guillotine” if you like big ensemble broadway numbers, it’s a banger, the bit where he cries out for God has been running through my mind on and off for a few days now haha not like that’s topical or anything), so every once in a while I spend a few days listening to them a lot.

Sometime last year I read the actual book, and got super into the whole concept of the Scarlet Pimpernel for a while. I plotted out Pimpernel aus for several fandoms, I read the entire wikipedia article, and I went looking for bootlegs of the musical. I didn’t find one, but I did find a full radioplay-style recording of the script, complete with full musical numbers, and listened to it like a podcast.

Reader, I was so disappointed. The play adds some scenes, bc a lot of the dramatic tension of the novel comes from internal conflict and that doesn’t stage super well, and the very first scene of this play – a play written in the NINETIES – features our dashing hero rescuing some aristocrats from a French prison, and then saying to the person in the next cell, who begs for rescue but is not an aristocrat, “We have enough of your kind in England.”

Enough! of your KIND! What in the merry frickety HECK my dudes!! The book has some rather unfortunate™ takes but it is from 1905, it’s regrettable but sadly to be expected. This play is from 1997. It has NO excuse. This scene wasn’t even in the book! What! the heck!

I was so disheartened that I lost my excitement for the play, and a couple songs later I stopped listening. It occurred to me just a few days ago that you could actually stage that ironically, with the person in the cell giving the audience a “can you believe this” look, and then the rest of the play could feature assorted non-aristocratic ensemble members constantly looking at the audience like they’re on The Office. And hey, maybe that’s what they did, or something similar – maybe that was never meant to be taken as a cleanly heroic stance, and the play deals with it in a complex way. It’s possible. I wouldn’t know. Kinda doubt it though, based on song lyrics.

Last Movie: I watched that new lesbian christmas movie with my family for christmas, the one with kirsten stewart and the guy from schitt’s creek. it’s very sweet and good and kinda sad, and I really enjoyed it. it also incidentally has the best gay best friend trope in probably anything ever, bc it’s not a trope (I didn’t realize until several hours after watching that it technically fits), it’s just a guy who is the protagonist’s best friend, and they’re just all gay, and then when he Gives Relationship Advice as a gay best friend always does, it’s advice about how to deal with your partner’s hangups around coming out.

actually every part of the gay best friend trope becomes better when they’re just best friends who are both gay. the big dramatic gestures (in this case, driving some ungodly distance in the snow on no notice) go from “haha how kooky” to “queer man will do anything he needs to to rescue his queer friend from an isolating & potentially triggering situation”. the relationship advice isn’t “honey you deserve some self-respect, treat yourself”, it’s a deeply sincere reminder of the vulnerability that is shared across almost everyone’s queer experience, and look I could ramble about this for a long time before reaching a coherent point but I’m INTO IT, okay? I’m into it.

Last Show: you want me to remember what show I last finished???? impossible, cannot be done, it was a long time ago and the adhd has eaten everything that happened before last week. here, instead I’ll tell you about another movie I watched, late at night with my mom in cozy companionship just a couple days ago. it’s called Quigley Down Under and it’s about a cowboy who goes to Australia and kills a bunch of racists, 10/10 would watch again. it’s from 1990 but it feels much older, with the music choices and the cinematography of a 70s Western. the cowboy is great, honorable and fearless and kind, but the breakaway star of this movie for me is the woman who attaches herself to his side and refuses to leave. her name is Cora, and she’s crazy, in the sense that she’s not altogether tethered to reality, but this never for a second diminishes her agency. she’s fierce and clever and compassionate, and she basically never does anything she doesn’t want to in the whole movie. her arc is about overcoming trauma by taking charge of her own fear and facing it head-on, she is never belittled or dismissed by the narrative or the protagonist, and look she’s just so cool. I love her. she’s so vibrantly alive. her story could probably have been handled with a bit more nuance, but honestly for the 90s it’s pretty great. I’m no expert, but I found nothing objectionable in it, just a bit of heavy-handedness.

anyway the theme of the movie is that racism is evil and racists deserve to be shot, and this too could have been handled better (not a single aboriginal character speaks a single line of english in this movie), but it follows through on that message in every way, while still being a fun kinda campy cowboy movie. overall a very good time.

Currently Watching: started showing my sister Hilda the other day, and she’s liking it! I love that show, it’s so incredibly cute. can’t wait to see season 2

Currently Reading: lmao I wish. lately the brain has firmly rejected all attempts to read anything of any length. currently pending, bc I was halfway through them when my brain stalled out, are tano’s fic What Does Kill You Can Make You Stronger, Too, a Toby Daye book - I think it was The Brightest Fell, I got like half a chapter in and haven’t picked it up in over a month, the Locked Tomb series, and probably a few other things too. ooh! also a book called Making Sex by thomas laqueur, which is my fancy academic reading that I’ve been doing in short bursts for the past year or two when I feel fancy and academic. it’s about the development of the concept of biological sex and of gender in Western society, and it’s fascinating. has among other things introduced me to the idea that until quite recently, fathers were a matter of faith. the mother? yeah, you can watch the baby pop out, we all know who the mother is. but the father? how can you know? how can you really know? we have paternity tests these days, but for all of human history up until now, we've just had to take fatherhood on faith. (not to mention we didn’t even know what fathers were contributing to the production of a fetus. clearly it was something, since you can’t get pregnant without a penis getting involved, but we have literally not known what until the past few decades. and that is wild. it has colored ALL of human history, all of our conceptions of society and family and kinship and gender, all of it, and it hadn’t even occurred to me until it was spelled out for me in this book, and it’s just......wow.

Nah don't listen to antis, Dabi would treat you right. He'd stay the same serial killer with abandonment issues and existential crisis except you'd be the only positive thing that's making his life better.

And before anyone gets to differ no, he wouldn't treat his s/o the same way Endeavor treated Rei. It's true that he inherited some characteristics from Endeavor but it's different; Endeavor wanted a Quirk marriage and his motivations were entirely self-centered whilst Dabi would accept someone who can understand him and feel w him. Dabi never got this kind of support before and he could use someone who's rly persistent and dedicated.

Dabi is canonicaly v cynical and doesn't trust ppl easily so you can prepare yourself for lots of rejections and avoidance coming from his side. That's why he needs someone who's emotionally strong and independent. If you're super clingy and impatient with him then this won't last long. Sudden acts of kindness will freak him out as well bc they're forced. You need to let it flow naturally.

He's a simple guy and doesn't like to owe anyone so if he needs assistance and you help him he'll pay you back. If he realizes that he can depend on you and trust you he'll calm down. If he comments on his pain and you offer to make it better idk massage him for instance then he'll get you dinner or whatever. That's just the way he is and he feels weird that anyone ever offered him some kind of help. He won't be too obv ab it but he'll appreciate it v much. You guys would start going out and talk ab random things, your stupid sense of humor makes him laugh but then it hits him that he couldn't remember the last time he laughed this much and he's in awe. You rly are something else.

The first time he opens up to you he'll cry bloody tears bc he never got to share his story with anyone. He completely isolated himself from the league and only appears when he's needed but most of the time he's left by himself and his own thoughts. He likes solitude but sometimes it becomes too much, he starts feeling many things at once and there's no one with whom he could share it. Sometimes it drives him insane but now that you're here he feels OK.

He'd wonder why you're even hanging around or what you can gain from someone this broken but you tell him that there's no one you'd rather be with or kiss him and he'll totally give in. 🥰

Since then he'll be more responsible for his health so you wouldn't feel uncomfortable with his burnt skin, the smell in particular. He can be so reckless at times but now that he has someone whom he can hold closer, he needs to take care of such things. You find out that he's a secret cuddler and he's acting different from when you're with the league. He's possessive and angry at Shigaraki for flirting with you to mess with him and although you get where Shig's at and honestly it's funny to a certain extent but Dabi would still be upset. Even if it's through a joke he doesn't like the idea of someone taking you away from him. You're his emotional support doll and now that he grew keen on you he doesn't plan on letting go.

The thing is, he never rly liked the idea of bonding with someone bc it meant more trouble than not. He's a villain and his life is dangerous, therefore whoever gets associated with him would only suffer. Heck he never befriended anyone after he left his home, he's refusing getting closer to the league bc his focus was entirely set on ruining Endeavor. Getting to know them wouldn't bring him any good, they're all meant to die anyways. That's what he thought, but Twice refused to leave him alone no matter how distant he could be and now he's regretting to even care ab this guy. He's glad that he burned Hawks, he'd do it all over again.

The more you listened to him you'll notice his caring and thoughtful side. Your only respond that it's true that villains are met with misfortune most of the time but it doesn't need to be that way. You're not afraid of the loss bc as long as you two are fighting together side by side nothing can bring you apart. And you couldn't give a fuck ab consequences bc he's worth it. He'll hug you and kiss your pretty head bc he's so amazed by your positivity. He doesn't deserve you, he doesn't want to lose you, you can notice a stray bloody tear rolling down his face and he apologizes bc it's disgusting but you kiss him to shut those stupid thoughts messing with his head. He's sad that his nerves are completely damaged, he wished to feel you more but thankfully you knew exactly where to touch and he thought that he'd never feel goosebumps again but you made it happen. He could feel things he thought he couldn't and God what he wouldn't do for you.

No rly he'd literally do anything for you, league is teasing him that he's following you around like a lost puppy but he couldn't care less. He thinks that they're just jealous bc they don't have someone as amazing as you. So much for the teasing, he got his revenge by not letting the league sleep the next night.

Tbh he wants to have similar effect on you as much as you have on him bc he'll never not be grateful for all the things that you've done for him. He's still some broken individual but at least he doesn't need to fight alone.

Tbh I kind of hate how fandom has latched on to the Lazarus Pit wrt Jason’s actions? Like despite having very little canon basis, it’s just so prevalent in fandom and fics, to the point where as far as fandom is concerned it’s become ubiquitous with the character, kind of like with baby stalker Tim or caffeine addict Tim. And it gets used as an excuse for his actions a lot, which I feel takes a lot of agency away from Jason. Like, sure, I can understand using Lazarus Pit madness as a contributing factor for like, the Battle for the Cowl nonsense and such, bc that was nuts and he was clearly unstable/OOC. But it’s used as a way to distance him from his actions and make it easier for the family to bring him back into the fold, which I get! True reconciliation with Jason as is would take a lot of work on the writer’s part, and I completely understand not wanting to get into all that. But I just feel like it’s a disservice to Jason’s core character. He’s someone with conviction and commitment. He believes his way is better than Bruce’s, and I feel like contributing that to Lazarus Pit madness, at least past a certain extent, undermines his character and takes away his agency and free will. Also, I’m ashamed to say it’s just while I was writing this that I had this epiphany as more than just a fleeting thought, but we can explain his Battle for the Cowl-era actions without the “Pit Madness”, bc mental illness is actually a real thing even without the Lazarus Pit

Oh I totally agree.

The thing is... while sure it’s nice in an ideal world and I know fanfic in general is a lot of wish fulfillment, realistically as he has ever existed in canon (especially pre-reboot) Jason ‘fitting in’ to the batfam is basically impossible without altering core things about him. And I think adding in ‘reoccurring lazarus pit madness’ as a way to rationalize his worst actions is the most common alteration, because as you said it distances him from some of his actions. 

Some rambling thoughts on this under the cut just looking at some Jason Moments™ but the main point I guess i’m making here is that taking away his agency kinda sucks because he is really interesting on his own

Jason, again particularly in preboot where he was at odds with the fam more constantly, is written very inconsistently and I think anyone would agree on that. He teeters on that line between Villain and Anti-hero. But no matter what in either of those positions, he is still having core differing ideals from the Bats, and that is not a result of the lazarus pits, that is a result of his life (and, well, death) experience.

Under the Red Hood (& Hush & that Teen Titans issue he’s in where he attacks Tim, so his earliest things after coming back) I think should always be interpreted as him acting more as a villain, because it is a revenge plot, it’s him acting out, it’s the result of every pent up feeling he had because of the circumstances of his death and how he felt he wasn’t properly avenged thus was unloved. Lost Days shows the foundation for that, but Lost Days also shows us that deep down in his core he still has a lot of heroic ideals, which is why when he’s not fueled by a need for revenge I think he’s best written as an Anti-Hero. When Jason sees people who are innocent (like the kids in that arc in Lost days) he is going to save them, he is going to be someone who stands up for those people. He is just willing to do any bad things he might need to in the process, he has sacrificed the more ‘heroic’ methods because he knows firsthand how they can still fail.

But honestly, after that point of crazy revenge schemes up until probably Battle For The Cowl where it all goes suuuper downhill, he falls way more in Anti-hero territory imo! Like, for example:

The Nightwing story with Tentacle Jason! (Nightwing (1996) #118-122)

Thinking about it aside from the sheer ridiculousness of the ending for a second, he expresses constantly in that story that he wants to be closer to Dick, he wants to work with him, because he does want to be a hero of a sort, he just thinks lethal methods are necessary. But that story was about him not wanting to be entirely isolated from the family. This is a Jason who is an anti-hero, he’s killing people because he thinks it’s necessary, not because he’s being driven crazy by a lazarus pit.

Then like, the Green Arrow story (Green Arrow (2001 #69-72) 

He kidnaps Mia to try to recruit her. He’s not just being ‘evil’ he is trying to make the tough calls and do things the rest of the general ‘hero’ community won’t do because it’s what he deems necessary, and he’s trying to convince her that she should do it too. It doesn’t make him right, or anything like that, but there is a logic to what he’s doing. It’s not ‘madness’.

Then like, he helps Dick out by giving him information on Black Lightning in the Outsiders! Because Black Lightning was innocent and Jason figured he may as well let Dick know what he knew. Countdown is a little bit of a mixed bag just because the event itself is kinda a mess but like, overall Jason cared about Donna and Kyle during it and while he was definitely the ‘black sheep’ of the group he still helped until it just became too much for him and he needed to peace out. But like, dude finally had gotten to a world where a version of Bruce had avenged him like he’d always wanted his Bruce to, and then he had to watch that Bruce get murdered in front of him. I can understand wanting to step away from the super scene for a bit after that! That’s not gonna put im in a great place mentally.

And then putting Bruce’s actual death in the main time during Final Crisis on top of it? NO SHIT HE WAS UNSTABLE DURING BATTLE FOR THE COWL. And like, even though it’s not fully justified reasoning, even BftC does show that something set Jason off. It was a tipping point:

It was still badly written Jason, but you can definitely start to explain it with literal just... instability because of trauma, unaddressed mental illness, etc, etc, you don’t need to say it was because he was dunked in the pit! Because that really does take away the responsibility he has over his own actions. 

Just... while it’s a fun idea to play with a Jason who can be an integrated part of the family, if you’re going to do it base it more on his current canon version where he has been shown to be willing to make compromises (rubber bullets) to be accepted because he is placing his need to be accepted by his family over his actual ideals at some points. This is honestly one of the biggest key differences between his pre-reboot version and his New 52 (especially Rebirth) and on version.

Pre reboot canon Jason wouldn’t do that. He absolutely would not. Not that he wants to be isolated from his family, (bc think about like not only the Nightwing stuff above, but there are TWO instances he reaches out to Tim, yes one of them is in BftC which ya know is a mess but he also does at the end of Tim’s Robin run before that!) He doesn’t even really hate them (ok he hates Dick in the way you hate your cool well-liked older brother but that’s different) but if he sees them as standing in his way he will take them down and stand against them. He is so deeply seated in what he believes is the right way to find justice, and they are not going to pull him out of it.

Blaming his actions that are rooted in his ideals on an outside factor like pit madness is definitely cheapening him as a character. 

ALSO side tangent but people who base things in preboot with Jason almost never even bring up Sasha and that just makes me sad. Like. Come on! He cares about that kid a ton! Sure Morrison’s version of Jason was also a mess, but the ending bit where he even does work with Dick & Damian to save her?? Winick had taken over writing by that point so it’s already a better characterization of him.

And this next bit also gets down to kinda the core of the matter: He’s willing to work with them as long as they let him do his thing, it’s just that they are not willing to work with him if he’s going to kill. And he’s not willing to fully compromise that longterm.

Using a lazarus pit as an out for his actions and thus acting like he didn’t choose to continue a lot of the killing (without an outside influence) changes his motivation, and creates a version of Jason who probably would compromise like that. But that’s not... how he actually was, in pre-reboot especially.

honestly, Bokuto doesn’t seem like the type to want to get messy and he’ll use it as a last resort but if he sees that someone is trying to get close to you, he will be on the lookout and will not hesitate to start killing someone. 

C - Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

he’ll pamper you. treat you as though you have been in love with him since you first saw him. Bokuto is a very heavy delusional yandere. he thinks that he’s the only person in your world and that no one else matters. 

D - Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

ummm, he wants kids. a lot of them. he wants to make an entire team basically. if he sees that you don’t want kids, adoption is always an option. but regardless, he will get kids whether you want to your not. also will unknowingly track your phone.

oh, poor Bokuto. he thinks that you really care about him. he straight up thinks that you love him like he loves you and will tell you everything about his life. he doesn’t care. again, very delusional so he doesn’t really see the fact that you don’t care for him. 

F - Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Emo mood like no other. he has to get Akaashi wrangled up in his relationship but honestly, he can’t bring himself to physically hurt you. i see a lot of people trying to make Bokuto some aggressive yandere but I personally can’t see it.

G - Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

no, this is nothing of a game to Bokuto. he needs you. he can’t live without you. he’d get so upset if he saw you trying to escape. there’s no joy for him on his end. i can imagine he’d probably spiral if he watched you leave. 

H - Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

probably when he first kidnapped them. the kicking, crying, screaming, and all of that hurt him so bad. Bokuto didn’t know how to calm them down and you were screaming so loudly. thankfully he actually installed sound proof walls. 

I - Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

he wants kidssss and so manyyyy. like dead ass. he wants an entire team and you will give it to him. he wants what some of his team members have and not only that, he wants to see you at his game with his jersey on and you screaming his name. 

J - Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

very easily jealous. lowkey one reason why he doesn’t want you around his team. he knows he has some very attractive teammates ( AHEM HINATA, SAKUSA, AND ATSUMU ) and if he saw any of them even tempting to flirt with you, so sad that they’ll suddenly lose a teammate. 

K - Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

he’ll be all up on you. he doesn’t care. he’s all about the PDA. if he wants to kiss you, he’ll do it. if Bokuto wants to hold your hand, he will. if Bokuto sees you’re looking extra cute, he’ll smother you. if he gets to a certain point, he’ll even skip a practice to be with you. 

L - Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

he’d try to court you but he gets too anxious and will take you right after a few weeks. in this yandere universe, he’d probably have Akaashi as a voice of reason to wait but god damn it, he couldn’t. he probably took you out on like one date before taking you. 

M - Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

everyone knows how expressive Bokuto is. they also know how he acts so a lot of that transfers over at home but turn the dial up to eleven. he’d def be more clingy to you and tbh, a part of Akaashi feels bad for you bc he knows the real Bokuto. 

N - Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

when Bokuto punishes, he PUNISHES. no holds bar. you have to absolutely push him to the edge tho bc he’d try not too. again, he would rather have Akaashi punish you but if Akaashi can’t or he wants to be the one to do it, he’d break a leg. leave marks on you. the whole shebang. 

O - Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

most of them. you don’t have car rights, phone rights, outside privileges, NOTHING. Bokuto is very paranoid you’d try to leave so he’d do everything in his power to strip you of your rights. and if you are online, he watches everything you do. 

P - Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

very patient! he’d take everything you’d do and try and justify it. he knows he pushes the limit on the slip ups you do, however; once his patient does wear thin, he’ll def not hold back or even ask Akaashi not too. but overall consensus, very patient. 

Q - Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

Bokuto will k word himself. no doubt. you are his life. you are above volleyball. you are above his friends and family. if you die, he does as well. if you escape, LMFAOOO, you’re not. he keeps your home secured and that isn’t even a thought. 

R - Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

nope! very delusional yandere so he doesn’t see his actions as wrong. he’s a ray of sunshine that sees nothing even mildly weird about kidnapping you. again, the chance of you leaving is a NO. you’re with him until you or him die. 

S - Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

honestly, probably curiosity. he sees other yanderes and their darlings and instantly craves it. as far as we know, Bokuto has no depressing or sad backstory so it’s just his thoughts that bring him into kidnapping and keeping you.

again, the whole physical punishment thing is not really his favorite thing to do. he’d rather let someone else do it or have you punish yourself in the sense of self isolation. he wants to keep you alive so he won’t starve you or anything.

honestly, probably his depressive episodes. that’s their best chance but that probably won’t work out. he knows what to tell you and what not too so you can’t exactly exploit something in specific. just the depressive episodes are your best bet.

I think modern superman is defined by his ability to be nice to people who would hate him if they knew his truth. Being able to slip under the radar and look human is important to him. It allows him access to a world that hates him just for existing and existing on Earth.

Clark doesn't want to be One Of The Good Aliens. Clark wants to be your work friend/drinking buddy you don't know is Marginalized in some way, who playfully calls you out on your shit in a way that might go over your head. He wants to steer you in the right direction---morally, ethically, socially----but he wants to do that by laying a good example, with the hard work he does being a journalist and exposing lies and injustices and ignorance. Clark knows the best way to convince someone other people have rights is not to be their One Marginalized Friend, but instead to be their Non-Marginalized Friend who listens to them vent about their false persecution complex and doesn't outright attack them for it---but instead states their own boundaries but provides the information and kindness they need to get out of that state of delusion.

Clark keeps his true self close to his chest. Very few people know his secret identity. Superman is a tool Clark can use to help people---but so is HAVING a secret identity.

Clark knows he is under no obligation to reform all the ignorance in the people around him. But he also can't imagine not being there for every person that crosses his path. Clark will always listen to you, and Clark will always try to tease something better out of you, challenging you just enough to make you stand a little straighter and question the fallacies in your logic and prejudice. But its a lonely thing, sometimes. Trying to be better than your instinct to write people off for your own sake, trying to help people who would never give YOU the time of day. There are exceptions, of course. Clark fucking hates rich people, for example, and will fuck them up if they do something unethical---as Superman. But so often people just... tell Clark things he doesn't always want to know, and Clark feels obligated to listen and try to change because... that's the kind of person he is, who can't stand to see someone suffer their own foolishness when he can see its just from a place of insecurity and paranoia.

Lois and Bruce are sometimes the only people Clark feels really know and understand every part of him. Even before he comes out to them as both identities. Its a very... particular thing. He allows himself to be completely an asshole with them. He allows himself to vent to them and debate with them like he's writing an article, instead of being so ginger and Featherlight with his touch.

Clark has a big heart but he's extremely opinionated. People he feels he can honestly express his opinions with without pouring attention into how he phrases every word are extremely important to him. Even if its just---people who allow him to express human emotions like ANGER and annoyance. Clark doesn't often let himself be angry. For many reasons... this is why Lex is still an extremely valuable person to Clark even after all they've been through. Lex allows superman AND Clark to express anger in a way Clark feels is righteous and true, which is important to him...

Clark isn't isolated from society bc hes an alien with alien feelings who could never hope to be human or something. Clark is isolated bc he is so human he doesn't want to hurt anybody without a reason to, he doesn't want to force anybody to accept him, doesn't want to be a poster boy, wants to help people but not have to share the insecurity he feels over feeling so alone and removed from his heritage.... its extremely lonely, "passing" and still feeling different, still knowing what people would say about u if they knew... in many ways his relationships with lois Bruce and lex are freeing for this reason bc they'll say it to his Goddamn face that he's a flying alien brick lmao.

Clark is a good person but sometimes, even in all his snark and condescension, he's TOO kind, too nice, tries too hard to help and risks his own feelings, gets hurt in the process. His heart is so vulnerable, and he tries to protect it with secret identities and self-isolation... but he can't help himself.

If you call out for a friend, if your heart beats too fast or too slow, Clark can't help but hear it. He wants you to understand. People are people, we are all the same infinite prism of complexity and doubt and fear and love, refracted light patterns in an infinite amount of directions and thoughts chosen and not. Clark can hear your heart, Clark can see you for exactly who you are... but he feels he can never tell you who he really is or you'll reject him in a way he refuses to reject most anyone. It's sad
