*crowd boos* yea ok so i know i owe a lot of threads rn and as someone who is in as big of a debt as i am i have no place bringing in another muse but also i have no self control so. yeah im back with jaden fanning who's really the face of the formerly gifted child! he's an allara native paired with an unhealthy dose of escapism which brings him to terra! ...for work, of course! you know the drill: hit that LIKE button and i'll come running for plots again!

aquarius sun / virgo moon / libra rising

born and raised in los angeles! he's got a cookie cutter life with upper middle class parents who stuck together and 3 sisters, 1 older and 2 younger, and they're all relatively close in age! being the middle child and only boy means he basically gets to do anything he wants so even though his sisters pretty much gang up on him, life is pretty breezy honestly

jaden's also a really smart kid and he's one of those weirdos who genuinely enjoys maths so he really excelled in school! him and his sisters are all pretty high achievers in general, so growing up in that environment really helped foster his education

he gets into the compsci program in whatever version of mit is present a millennium later in allara and this is really where his life starts! living away from his childhood home, he was really able to break out of his mould! it's very much like if you've always been a class clown in hs, people expect you to only be a class clown and similarly in his home, people expected him to be jaden, their son / brother / whiz kid, but for once he was really able to just be whoever and do whatever he wanted!

absolutely bombs his first yr in uni thanks to his newfound freedom ( tho bomb in his family's standards is like a B- ) so his parents start calling, sisters start teasing him, everyone starts to get a little concerned for him and he kinda doesn't like disappointing people so he locks in! one thing he's learnt from this tho is that he kind of realises that he can never really be who he wants to be fully, because his family will always kind of be hovering over him ( like family ought to do but yk men n their need for independence )

anw he graduates thankfully and manages to snag an internship with allara's version of terrascape ( allarascape or sumn idk ) as an engineer! has been working there since and he's got some good critical thinking, work ethic & he's got an easygoing personality so he climbs the ranks pretty easily!!

only for things to grow so mundane again? his now 5y old job is very reminiscent of his childhood, how he's now shelved as a can-do engineer and everyone knows and expects him to always act in a certain way

at this point he starts looking for other jobs ( doesn't tell his parents tho bc they'd call him crazy and talk him out of it considering allara(scape) is like. the biggest company in allara im guessing ) and around sometime end of last year, he finds an opening at his company to transfer to terra as an inter-server compatibility engineer! it genuinely felt like the perfect opportunity for him so he applied immediately

doesn't tell his parents until he actually gets approved for the job and is told that he needs to relocate in like a month, and his parents are naturally sad about losing their son but he convinces them like hey, it's only semi-permanent and he can come back anytime if he doesn't like it, he's only doing this to move up in his career and what better way than to be in touch with the other part of his culture ( all lies btw he just wants some excitement in his life ) and his parents eat it up so they agree that he should take the job

but yes! that brings him to terra! he's moved over to the server for about a month or so now so he's literally a fresh face!

personality-wise jaden is really easygoing and has a very try anything once type of mentality! recently, he's been getting into the music of terra ( ngl he found it a lil rocky at the start but it's grown on him ), the games ( iron fist rocks btw ) and their cool dating app, but yeah he'll literally try anything to keep himself entertained!

in saying so jaden bores very easily... he's truly an aquarius at heart in that he loves to try new things but he also learns very quickly and gets bored of them once he does, so he'll run through many different hobbies and interests until he runs out then that jaded feeling leading into escapism comes creeping back in... luckily he's only on his first month in terra tho so the shine's gonna stay for at least 1-2 years still!

ironic but maybe the reason why he bores easily is because he's fostered a pretty boring life for himself 😖 definitely a lot more boy-next-door compared to some of the muses here so really, he's just your typical dude!

considering the event that just concluded i should also say that he's a terra glazer, given that he works with the code he does find it hard to admit that there's anything wrong with the code so if your muse is out here saying that terra is lying and all that he's treating them like scientists treat covid deniers : >> will kinda write them off eek but in saying this he's also not very self-aware lol prob rates himself pretty high on the nice, down to earth scale so take that how you will

my big answer for this one is always 'lily deserves to snap'

her options are SUPER limited due to being muggleborn (with the added complication of not having a lot of money) - i've intensified this in ttdl by making the socioeconomic hierarchy of magical society much more clearly defined than it is in canon, with what is essentially an aristocratic class, the 'good families' that aren't aristocratic, and everyone else, but that's not to say that hierarchy isn't there in canon - it's just not laid out in as explicit terms

by virtue of being muggleborn, lily is automatically semi-locked out from the upper echelons of magical society. not to say that she *has* to aspire to being part of that group, but it's still a frustrating indicator of the status quo

like - you know how harry has a ton of money? that didn't come from the evans family's generational wealth, and lily and james died so young that it's HIGHLY unlikely they earned all of that themselves, especially since james was canonically an auror and lily was.......... we don't get that information because actually her entire life revolved around james and harry, why would you expect her to have any other sorts of life goals or interests :)

ANYWAY. thus, that money is the potters' generational wealth baybeeeee - like, lily married into an upper-class family, but a) she still wouldn't really be accepted in the mostly-purist world of the sacred 28, and b) in order for lily to marry into the upper class, sorta, she needs *someone from that class to want/be willing to marry her.* i'm not talking about lily's motivations here btw - i'm talking about how in order for lily to get into that upper class or be adjacent to it, she needs connections, which makes her relatively dependent on the whims of people like james. (again, not talking about individual motivations here - just how this world works. in canon, the social structure of the wizarding world is less obviously stratified than it is in my version, but these forces are still very much at play. it's just made more explicit in ttdl)

and since lily is muggleborn, making those connections is much harder. her parents don't have old friends from hogwarts, and she wasn't raised learning about magic, so she's at a disadvantage when she does arrive at hogwarts and start interacting with other magical people

in canon, lily does everything 'right', according to jkr's version of what a Good Woman looks like. (not that jkr explicitly articulates that, but like..... if you've ever seen that meta post about how the 'best' women in hp are married, mothers, and also dead, you know what i'm talking about.)

also, lily does not get to be a shitty teenager in the way that the marauders and snape do. she's held up as this example of a Good and Righteous and Moral person who Fights For What Is Right and james has to better himself before he is worthy of her, essentially. (the marauders, save peter, are held up as being good people, despite often being assholes as teenagers; snape is...... snape, but jkr definitely *intends* for us to view him as a good person Despite It All, and none of this is even getting into the 'good vs bad' dichotomy of canon which is partly due to it being a children's series and partly due to very absolute moral stances and just - okay i'm getting super off track. back to lily! who is not permitted to have this personal growth. she must be perfect at all times)

and then lily sacrifices herself to protect her child - which isn't a bad thing inherently, but it does play into this placing her upon a Selfless Pedestal. jkr values selflessness a LOT, to the point of martyrdom (you can feel the jesus bleeding through - consider the villainizing of 'slytherin traits,' primarily ambition and the association with self-preservation, neither of which are inherently bad, in canon; also, both lily and harry sacrificing themselves for others and how this ends up Saving Everyone™, BOTH TIMES).

so lily is this deified amazing mother who is Selfless and Virtuous and Heroic and Righteous and etc etc etc etc etc

ANYWAY. to get back to the corruption arc, i want a lily who is aware that she has to be pretty much perfect in order to get anywhere in magical society in an 'acceptable' way. she has to be good enough (at whatever it is she decides to do) to 'overcome' her socioeconomic class. it is unfair and it is infuriating and it is how this world works

and then i want her to decide It Is Not How This World Works. Anymore.

in essence, taking lily's canon characterization and turning that into something that was placed on her that she rejects

OOOOOOOOO ALSO. so dumbledore factors into this as well - he's got such a legend status among non-purists and something i really like for corruption arcs is characters who *were* incredibly diehard dumbledore supporters like. breaking off from that. not necessarily treating him as an enemy, but not treating him as a hero either

which is part of why i like a corruption arc for lily in particular. also for remus!

but also sometimes with regard to a villain arc i'm just like 'yeah i want to see what happens' fjwlghsfjdkls. that's a path barty's going to go down in ttdl - not a villain arc in the sense that he's going to be a villain in the story, but more precisely a bastardization arc. it's what he deserves<3

honestly for me i think the key ingredient in a successful corruption arc, no matter what the details are, is the character rejecting something they previously held dear, especially in favor of more independence. that's why i wouldn't settle on sirius for a corruption arc - it's already happened for him, and imo doing it again wouldn't be a satisfying character arc

Twelve Days of Mingcheng - Day Nine

Objective

Nie Mingjue enters the arena and the crowd goes silent.

It’s been years since the heir to the Nie Sect participated in events other than mounted archery or sword fighting, so for him to join the roster for hand-to-hand combat is unexpected.

Spectators watch with bated breath as he walks to his place and murmurs begin to spread as people feel anticipation grow.

The fight hasn’t begun, but already bets are being placed.

Eyes shift from Nie Mingjue to the first opponent, and it’s blatantly obvious who will win; the questions shifting from who will win, to how long will it take, and for how many rounds will he go undefeated?

Because even with the young opponent’s own heavyweight status, he pales in comparison next to the Nie Sect heir.

It doesn’t help that he’s already starstruck in the face of a walking legend- a man that had to stop competing because he won too often and needed to give others a chance.

Nie Mingjue reaches his spot, stretches briefly, before getting rid of the robes on his upper body. He gets in position, the gong tolls, and then in the blink of an eye, it’s over.

The kid is already laid out on his back, and Nie Mingjue hasn’t even broken a sweat.

How long did it last? The question spreads throughout the crowd. Who won? How much?

Those who have never seen Nie Mingjue fight are completely blindsided by the power his body possesses. Excitement begins to build, growling steadily as the call is announced.

Wei Wuxian looks confused, and Nie Huaisang is staring at him slightly offended.

“Well?” Jiang Cheng prompts, a bit more forceful than he intended, but it’s important.

“Jiang-xiong,” Nie Huaisang begins, uncertain, “I’m not quite sure what you mean…”

“What I mean is,” Jiang Cheng says, tone rising in emphasis as he punctuates each word with a tap of his cup, “isn’t it too much? Does he really need to look like that?”

Wei Wuxian chokes on his own spit, coughing into his cup, and Nie Huaisang’s nose scrunches in disgust, eyebrows pulling in as he starts to frown.

“Jiang-xiong-”

“Like seriously! Isn’t it enough?” Jiang Cheng asks, desperation coloring his voice as he remembers the scene from earlier today. “He couldn’t stop at being a competent heir? He wasn’t happy with being top of his class and champion of all inter-sect competitions? He just had to go and have the body of a fucking martial god too?”

He pours himself another cup and downs it in an instant. “Fucking disrespectful.”

A beat of silence passes between them before Wei Wuxian busts a gut, falling out of his chair as he cackles at Jiang Cheng’s predicament.

“Jiang-xiong, that’s my brother.”

“And?” He says, raising his eyebrow, begging the other to argue.

“I’m just saying.” Nie Huaisang replies, snapping his open to cover his face while glaring at Jiang Cheng. “I’d rather not hear you lusting after my brother.”

“I’m not lusting,” Jiang Cheng retorts instantly, “I’m being objective.”

“Jiang Cheng-” Wei Wuxian squeaks from his spot on the floor, a new round of laughter starting up.

“No, listen,” Jiang Cheng starts and Nie Huaisang knows he’s going to hate absolutely every word that comes out of his friend’s mouth next. “It’s the objective truth that Nie Mingjue is fucking ripped. His biceps alone should be classified as weapons of mass destruction, and his thighs are the size of my head.”

Nie Huaisang groans, but Jiang Cheng continues anyway. “And even though this is the first time I’m seeing his abdomen, gods bless by the way, is anyone surprised he’s shredded there too?”

“Don’t forget his height!” Wei Wuxian pipes up from the floor and Nie Huaisang throws his fan at him; it hits the mark, right between the eyes, and Wei Wuxian yelps. Jiang Cheng pays that no mind.

“Thank you, Wei Wuxian.” He goes on. “Nie Mingjue is 1. 9. 3 cm! That’s ridiculous, not even Lan Xichen is that tall! Where does it come from? Did he win the entire genetics lottery or something-”

“Jiang-xiong, you’re pushing it-”

“And his face! It’s not fair, it’s against the rules! He has dimples. I hate it. I hate him and his stupid face.”

“The first time I saw his face I thought one of the temple statues came to life” Wei Wuxian nods solemnly, finally getting himself under control. He waves down a waiter, asking for another bottle.

“This is bullying.” Nie Huaisang whines, grabbing whatever alcohol there is left on the table. “You guys are bullying me.”

“It’s not our fault your brother’s hot.”

“Exactly!” Jiang Cheng says, clinking his cup with Wei Wuxian in camaraderie. “This wouldn’t have even been an issue if your brother hadn’t competed today- half-naked- and then proceeded to defeat fifteen men.”

And it’s totally not bullying, his mind adds. If it were, Jiang Cheng would have mentioned how he dreams about those thighs under his hands; fantasizes about his large hands gripping his hair; thinks about how Nie Mingjue is so strong he’d probably be able to hold Jiang Cheng up against a wall as he-

The waiter passes by, placing another three bottles on the table and Jiang Cheng coughs lightly as they each grab one. He’s lucky his face is already flushed from the booze

He and Wei Wuxian both pour their alcohol into their cups, but Nie Huaisang opts to just drink it straight from the jug. He’ll need it if he wants to keep sitting here.

It’s not like Nie Huaisang has never heard people talk about his brother this way, it’s just that these are his friends; having to listen to this from them just isn't right. He shakes his head in disappointment. It’s not like he ever spoke about his fantasy threesome so this is just uncalled for.

“Don’t you find him intimidating though?” Wei Wuxian asks, breaking everyone’s train of thought.

Nie Mingjue isn’t the most intimidating person Wei Wuxian has ever met, he grew up with Madame Yu after all, but he definitely ranks high on the list. There are very few people that could shut him up with a single glare after all.

But Wei Wuxian knows Jiang Cheng, and he knows his didi has a type- a flashback of Wen Qing enters his mind and he shudders, that was unfortunate. Regardless, if the question is intimidation…then Jiang Cheng might be, but that's the point.

“He could choke me with his thighs and I’d say thank you.” Jiang Cheng answers, completely serious.

“Oh, really?”

The three of them freeze, cups poised to drink still hovering in the air as they look at one another in horror.

The first one to break eye-contact is Nie Huaisang, who glances up and pales immediately. “Er-ge, San-ge-” a gulp- “Da-ge.”

Wei Wuxian is the next to take the leap, peeking to the side. And then immediately looking away, laughing haltingly as he exchanges his cup for the bottle and drinks.

“And who might’ve caught Young Master Jiang’s eye,” a deep baritone voice asks and Jiang Cheng jumps at the attention, almost spilling his alcohol before he can put it down.

Jiang Cheng laughs nervously, looking at the three men standing near their table. Lan Xichen looks mildly embarrassed, his ears tinged pink; Meng Yao is hiding a smirk behind his sleeve, but you can see it in his eyes; Nie Mingjue just looks genuinely curious to hear his response, and somehow that’s worse.

Jiang Cheng thinks he’d rather face his mother’s wrath than answer that question- he’s always been such shit at lying- but it doesn’t seem like that will happen.

He looks to Nie Huaisang for help- the fan is back up and he’s checking his nails. Nothing.

He looks at Wei Wuxian for help- nevermind, that was a stupid idea. Nothing.

He sighs.

“I was just referring to someone I saw earlier,” Jiang Cheng mumbles into his cup.

It’s not exactly a lie, he tells himself, so it shouldn’t be too obvious.

Nie Mingjue hums for a moment, looking at him contemplatively, before smirking. “That’s a shame. I thought you were talking about me.”

And with that, he walks the fuck away.

Jiang Cheng is speechless.

Nie Huaisang is speechless.

Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen, even Meng Yao- all speechless, staring at the place the man previously took up.

“Holy shit.”

they’re both high rated attorneys and in the early nineties even opened a law firm in los angeles and due to being incredibly popular with celebrities, they became like loaded and rly well known. 

for a good few years, things were going well for mr and mrs tilo… until competition arose and their firm wasn’t in the media as much, which meant less clients and less money. they were still terribly rich, but they wanted more. they needed to get their name out there again and what better way to do that then to have a child?

their competition was being forgotten about and the tilo’s were rising once again. however, they needed a calm place for their son to grow up, they didn’t want the craziness of hollywood to intervene with his upbringing but their jobs were also important so they moved to the upper east side of ny and bought the largest house, of course they needed the whole of nyc to know how rich they were.

unfortunately, they had no plans to stay and look after their son as being a lawyer and running their own firm is a 24 hour business. they hired some of the best house staff to take care of their home and most importantly, just not to james & sofia themselves, baby cody.

cody tilo was raised by strangers her parents hired, who eventually became more like family than his real parents. he saw them once a month, if that and every time his parents had an important event to attend - they can’t leave the person who put them back on the map at home. soon enough, james & sofia’s guilt kicked in. on cody’s eighth birthday, his parents not only bought him his first car (despite not being able to drive yet) but also set up his own bank account – with a starting amount of $500,000 and an extra $100,000 being transferred bi weekly. 

anyways bc his parents were like never around, he used to act up a lot in school and became a lil rebel, skipping, not doing homework, refusing to cooperate and he rly only did it so they’d contact his parents n they’d come home but uh they didn’t . his house staff had to deal w him.

when he got to high school, he changed his tune a lil bit, he was still a dumb lil rebel but he started listening in class. he watched these dramatic ass crime shows n decided that’s what he wanted to do. and he properly worked hard n studied so he could study forensic science at columbia ( and hey lmao he got there ) 

his parents were not impressed bc they wanted him to follow in their footsteps n obvs cody didn’t want to . but like he was scared that they were gonna complete ignore him, like move away n focus on their career n just leave him :(

so ( and he’s still doing this now ) he still wants to advance in forensic science but whenever his parents need him for some sort of celeb event or magazine family photoshoot / interview he’ll drop everything to be there for them , even tho he’d rather stay out of the limelight his parents have created for him. 

but yk he’s a lil baby n doesn’t wanna lose his parents so he’s gonna do it.
