“The people in Crisis City need me. I had best return,” Silver sighed.

Amy’s face fell. “But… that place is not safe. Is it?”

“Iblis is gone. That’s made it safer than it has in decades.” Yes, he had to go back, Silver forced himself to concede. Firmly he pushed back the chair, rising to his feet: he’d dawdled plenty in this place. “Thank you, for helping me,” he nodded back to Amy. Both now, and before, but he didn’t know how to say either, and thus he awkwardly held out his hand for her to grasp and shake.

Shaken it got, though Amy’s brow furrowed in deep conflict. “Silver, Crisis City doesn’t really sound like a good place for you to be-”

“Doesn’t matter. I have to help there.” Tugging his hand away Silver drew a deep breath, palms splaying out and his eyes closing as he focused his attention to the energy of the Emeralds in his chest.

And frowned…

And opened one eye to peek…

And swallowed, body tensing and fingers curling as he stared, calling out to the Emeralds and commanding them to heed his words and take form, and Amy clearing her throat as well, and a sinking feeling washed over him like a blast of frozen air.

Because where in his hands two Emeralds should have materialised, there laid nothing.

“Um,” Silver spoke, something cold dipping into his stomach. “That’s… not right.”

“Should something have happened?”

“The Emeralds. I have them with me, always.”

“The ones from your future? All seven Emeralds were together a while ago, while Sonic was fighting off an angry god from the core of the planet, but I haven’t seen them since.”

“But… But two of them should be with me!” Balling his fists Silver tried again, and again, and yet the emptiness underneath the agitated burn of his chest was undeniable.
