Hoping so very hard that Rory would follow, Isi did as she was told. She ran. Through the door. Through whichever corridor she ended up in. Through so many doors she didn't have a clue where she ended up. And she was lost.
Coming up to a heavy metal door, she didn't hesitate to get inside. Like all the other ones, the door slammed behind her, leaving her stranded in some sort of bunk room.
It took a while for her breathing to slow down. Once she could think straight again, she started counting.
Sitting on the chair facing the door, she stayed as silent as possible. Seconds stretched into minutes. Then she heard noise in the hallway.
Isidora couldn't help but reach for the old hammer she'd kept close. Thankfully, the red eyes that appeared in the door window were Rory's.
"It's okay, I lost it a couple of minutes back. Are you hurt?" Rory was calm, her breathing not even hurried.
Isidora felt the sting of tears in her eyes. She'd never been so scared.
"I..." she started, unable to finish.
Sobs were getting stuck in her throat. Rory didn't hesitate to bridge the gap between them and wrapped her arms around her.
"It's okay, you're alright, I promise. It's okay, love. You'll be alright."
Isi closed her eyes, focused on the reassuring words spoken softly in her ear.
As she started to calm down, Isidora felt Rory gently pushing her towards the bed.
"Sit down for a minute, you'll feel better."
"How are you so chill? Are you not terrified that this monster'll find us?" Isi asked when her voice was functionnal again.
"I gave it a good scare, I don't think it wants to find us right now..."
Isi met Rory's eyes, wondering how dangerous she could be if she'd been able to get the best of a spider that was twice her size. As she took her in, she realised that the werewolf's forearm was bleeding.
"You're wounded!"
"It's nothing, it'll be healed in a minute, just a scratch. One of its fangs grazed my arm when it lunged after you."
"They're not fangs, they're mandibles. And you need to bandage it so it doesn't get infected."
"Honestly darling, there's no need."
"We're underneath sewers, Rory. We're not risking you losing a hand because of my stupidity. I saw sterile gauze around here somewhere, give me a minute."
Isi found everything she needed in the small room and gave thanks to whoever had brought all the supplies down here.
"What happened to not throwing blame around?" Rory asked when Isi got back to her side. The only reply she got was a low hum before Isi started attending the cut. There wasn't just blood in there but some strange silky liquid as well.
"How much does it hurt?"
Rory shrugged, but winced as soon as Isi put some alcohol on it.
"Don't lie to me."
"Okay, it hurts a bit more than it should. There's a weird sting to it that's not going away..."
"We need to get back to the surface. Can you find an exit?"
"Of course."
"Then let's go."
Rory stood up again, maybe a little too fast because she seemed to lose her footing. Isi grabbed her by the hand, careful to avoid the part of her bandage that was covering the wound and already starting to soak up some blood.
"Do you think it's waiting for us?"
"We'll be careful, I'll keep my ears open." Rory answered with a wink, clearly still confident in her ability to protect them both.
And so they started making their way back. Checking around every corner and being hyper aware of their surroundings.
