convincing some friends to read homestuck and also umineko, somehow this comparison tumbled out of my fingers and i think it's accurate
[...] idk homestuck is very complicated but its complicated in VERY DIFFERENT WAYS than the ways umineko is very complicated
umineko feels like a delicately crafted puzzle daring you to solve it. homestuck feels like you upended a box of cords and earbuds and are struggling to untangle it
both play a lot into the adversarial nature of the author-audience dynamic, but umineko by design mimics the classic mystery novel whodunnit structure and cribs its author-audience dynamics from that directly, while homestuck starts out as basically hussie DMing a comic instead of writing it
[...] Also dont let my description trick you into thinking umineko is a gentler experience because what i didnt say is that halfway through the puzzle pieces start becoming invisible and also levitating upside down
