Love in Four Ways: Dream Lover [part 4 - final]
Pairing: Shownu x reader
A/N: A little cameo in this one from the idol that sent me the inspiration to continue with the rest of this series and actually complete it. To those that have read this series, thank you for joining me in this journey. I hope you enjoyed! And please look forward to the rest of the collab in the upcoming months with the lovely ladies that were so kind in joining this amateur in making an overwhelming idea come to life <3
Prologue | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4
------------
Your phone alarm went off and you reached over to shut it off. You stretched your limbs to get the sleep off of them. You blinked a few times as you stared at the ceiling and smiled. You knew you had a really good dream...you could still feel the residual warm butterflies in your tummy. However, the harder you tried to remember, the more the details eluded you.
“Oh well,” you sighed out loud. You kicked off your blanket and put your hair in a messy bun. It made you sad that you couldn’t remember, but you couldn’t dwell on it any longer. You had a big day ahead of you. You made your bed and started cleaning every room of your apartment. Your parents called in the midst of all the cleaning, just as you had predicted them to, and so you multitasked for a few while they caught up with you.
Minutes after you had hung up with them as you transitioned from cleaning to cooking and prepping food, your best friend from work, JB, called you to make sure it was truly OK for him to bring his college friend along to your birthday dinner. When you confirmed that it was, he cut the call short and said he’d see you soon. Something about his tone made you suspicious, but you just brushed it off and continued with your cooking.
As soon as pasta was prepped and bread was keeping warm, you decided you needed to get yourself presentable and then start on the rest of the remaining tasks. You left your TV on as you showered, groomed, and styled. As you were applying your makeup the weather report came on predicting showers for the night. You looked out your bathroom window and saw the sun shining through and laughed to yourself thinking of how off today’s weather report was.
As you finished your look with your favorite lip color, the doorbell rang. When you opened it, you found the smiling faces of your brother, his wife and their 6 month old son. You gave hugs and kisses as you invited them in. Your sister-in-law handed you your present from them, your favorite cake from the bakery in the neighborhood you grew up in, and you hugged her in thanks. You told them to get comfortable on the couch as you still had a few things to finish up in the kitchen before the rest of the guests came.
“I’ll help!” your brother exclaimed as he jumped up and followed you into the kitchen. You were then directing him on where things needed to be and what else needed to be made. With his help, everything was set and before you got to play with your nephew, you made sure to turn on some music to lightly play in the background.
Your guests started to arrive and you were up off your seat every few minutes or so to greet your friends into your home. Luckily, you have a small circle of friends so no introductions were needed. You’ve all interacted with one another at one point in your lives so you felt at ease leaving them to mingle and catch up with each other in your living room with each other as you went to fetch drinks and snacks from the kitchen as needed. There was just one more person you were waiting on. Correction...two.
As you were looking at the clock, you started to hear pitter-patters on your window and saw raindrops starting to cling to it rather quickly.
“Wow,” you said out loud to the group, “I didn’t think it was going to rain earlier cause of all the sun and yet the weatherperson was right.” Your group then started talking about the rain and who listened to the forecast versus who didn’t. You offered the extra umbrellas you had on hand to those that came unprepared for the weather change should the rain not let up.
The knock on the door interrupted your interaction with the conversation. You got up and opened up the door and was greeted by a bouquet of white roses. The man holding it was busy shaking the water out of his hair and off his jacket. He smiled and his eyes crinkled at the corners when he saw you. You almost got lost in his warm, brown eyes...his familiar warm, brown eyes.
“Y/N?” he asked you, bringing you back out of your stupor.
“That’s me,” you responded.
“I’m Hyunwoo, Jaebeom’s friend.
“Oh!” you exclaimed when the relation clicked in your brain and you stepped aside to let him in. “Nice to meet you. Oh goodness! You got all wet! I didn’t realize it was coming down that hard outside.”
“It’s just water,” he said, still smiling, “These are for you. Happy birthday.” He offered the bouquet and a gift bag you didn’t notice he was holding in the same hand.
“Thank you so much. This is really thoughtful of you,” you replied as you accepted and smelled the flowers. “Roses have such a special meaning to me. They’re my favorite.”
“My gut was telling me to trust the old lady at the flower shop. I’m so glad I did.” He chuckled and rubbed the back of his head as he did. You tilted your head as you started to feel a sense of deja vu with the gesture.
“Hey, sis!” your brother called out, pulling you out of your thoughts, “Who’s the new guy?” You introduced Hyunwoo to the gang and he shyly waved his greeting to the group.
“Where is JB?” your sister-in-law asked Hyunwoo.
“He went to go park the car,” he answered, “He should be joining us in a few minutes.” You offered to take Hyunwoo’s coat to hang up to dry as you signaled your brother to keep him company while he waited for his friend to come and excused yourself to go put the flowers in a vase.
After you hung up his coat on the coat rack behind your door, you went into the kitchen to arrange the flowers in a vase handed down to you from your mom the day you lost your grandmother. You used to imagine how they would display the love from your grandfather when he would gift your grandmother different bouquets during their life together. Usually, you used it for the flowers you bought yourself from time to time to brighten up your space and now here you were using it for flowers you received as a present for a change. While this bouquet wasn’t one of love, it was one of kindness and thoughtfulness from a stranger. Now that you were thinking of it, a stranger that seemed oddly familiar and you didn’t know why.
Your phone began to ring in the back pocket of your pants. “Hey Jaebs, you find parking OK?”
“I’m not finding anything close and it’s coming down pretty hard right now,” JB answered, “I just wanted to make sure I dropped off your birthday present.”
“Hyunwoo gave me the gift bag and the flowers. Thank you,” you acknowledged.
“Those aren’t from me,” JB replied, “Those are Hyunwoo’s presents to you.”
“Well, I didn’t get anything else,” you said as you leaned against the countertop.
“Hyunwoo is my present to you,” JB revealed as he chuckled.
You sighed and let out a laugh yourself. “What nonsense are you talking about, Jaebs?”
“Remember all those times I’ve been asking you to join me for a drink at my friend’s bar?” he reminded you.
“I vaguely remember,” you feigned. You really did remember clearly each time he’s asked for the past month or so. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to. You just couldn’t just ignore the workload you always had in front of you.
“I’ve been trying to get you and Hyunwoo together for the longest time!” he exclaimed, “I just had this voice in the back of my head saying that you two would really hit it off. So, since you’ve been so busy, I saw your little get together as that open door to push the possibility of love right through it.”
You didn’t know how to respond other than laughing at your friend’s hopeful notion. “You’re a nut,” you finally said after you let it all out, “I never thought of you as a hopeless romantic, my dear friend.”
“I’m not,” he denied, “but I’m not one to go against my gut.”
“OK, Jaebs,” you surrendered, “Thank you...I guess. I can’t promise you that we may end up married with a bunch of kids, but I can’t say that I’m not open to it. He is quite handsome.”
“Well, not as handsome as I am, but pretty close,” JB cockily remarked and you could hear his smirk through the phone.
You rolled your eyes even though he couldn’t see you. “Right,” you replied sarcastically.
“I’m gonna head on home,” JB informed you, “Tell Hyunwoo to give me a call when he’s ready to go home...if he wants to go home.”
“Jaebs, you’re the worst,” you said as you rolled your eyes yet again, “I’ll let him know. Be safe.”
“Always,” he replied, “Happy birthday, Y/N.”
You thanked him and ended the call. After placing your phone back in your pocket, you grabbed the vase with Hyunwoo’s flowers and entered the living room to rejoin your guests. You were greeted with the sight of your brother in deep conversation with Hyunwoo and your nephew drinking his bottle comfortably on Hyunwoo’s lap. Your heart did a thing. Then an image of you and Hyunwoo on the couch with two kids of your own entered your mind. You had no idea where it came from, but you shook it off. You just met the man a few minutes ago, Y/N! you scolded yourself, WAY too early.
“Bad news you guys,” you announced to the room and placed your vase on one of your side tables, “Jaebs said something came up so he’s not gonna be able to make it.” You twisted the truth a little bit. You couldn’t tell the entire truth to the group. You looked over at Hyunwoo who looked calm on the outside, but something in his eyes told you otherwise. While the others were discussing what a shame it was for him to miss out. You had walked over to Hyunwoo to have a hushed discussion with him.
“I’m pretty sure you really know why Jaebs isn’t here,” you told him. He sighed and nodded with a look of contemplating how to murder his friend. “If you’re uncomfortable, I will totally understand if you wanted to leave right now,” you continued, “He said to call him when you wanted to go home.” The last thing you wanted was for this innocent man to feel obligated to stay because his friend was so insistent he be matched with some girl he doesn’t even know.
Hyunwoo thought about it as he looked into your apologetic eyes. “It’s OK,” he replied, “I’ll stay. It’s your birthday.” He smiled. You couldn’t help but smile back.
You looked over at the rest of your guests and suggested they all have dinner now since everybody was now accounted for. Your group moved from the living room into the ready set dining room and gathered around the table as you brought the food for your small birthday feast. You sat at the head and urged your friends and family to help themselves as you watched on. Hyunwoo had taken a seat next to yours and your brother on the other side. You waited until everyone had their plates all filled before you served yourself.
As you were about to reach to fill your own plate, it was taken away from you and replaced with one that was full. You looked over at Hyunwoo who had the empty plate in his hand reaching to fill it with the salad. He looked over at you and saw you looking.
“You should eat,” he insisted and continued to fill the empty plate for himself. You could feel the blush rise to your cheeks as you thanked him and picked up your fork. You’ve only witnessed this gesture once in your life when you were young sitting around your grandparents’ table for dinner. Your grandmother had made sure your plate was full and your grandfather placed a ready made plate for her in front of her. Your heart did a thing...again.
Luckily, conversation started to happen all around you to distract you from your fluttering heart. You caught up with your friends and siblings and at the same time, got to know Hyunwoo a bit more. The more you talked with him, the more attracted you were to him and wanted to know more about him. You started to become quiet as the conversations around you started to become background noise and you just took in the moment. You then felt a touch on your hand that brought you back to reality.
“Everything OK, Y/N?” Hyunwoo asked.
You smiled at him. “Just extremely happy,” you replied. You looked at his hand still gently placed on yours and for the second time that night, the feeling of deja vu hit you. He lightly patted it and smiled at you as he removed it to reach for his drink.
The rest of the time flew by quickly, as it is known to do when one has fun with great company. Your brother made you blow out candles as your guests sang Happy Birthday. An hour after dessert and getting to more playtime with your nephew with Hyunwoo sitting beside you, your guests started to take their leave. At some point during the night, the rain finally stopped to allow a safe journey back home for all your friends and family. After your brother, who had really bonded with Hyunwoo that night and made sure to give you that look of “I really like this guy - I approve”, and his family left, it was just you and Hyunwoo.
The music you had turned on earlier that night started to fill the space around you two as you both sat silently on the couch next to each other.
“I should probably text Jaebeom to come get me,” he said breaking the silence and taking out his phone to send the message.
You nodded. “I should start clearing things up,” you said and got off the couch, “Would you like some leftovers to take home? It’s way too much for me to eat by myself.”
“I’d love that!” he exclaimed, “Dinner was delicious!”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it,” you replied and walked into the kitchen with Hyunwoo following your footsteps as he grabbed his present from the small pile you made.
“I hope you like tea,” he said as he walked into the kitchen area.
“I do,” you answered
“Do you have a tea kettle?” he asked, “I can heat this up for you, if you like, while we wait for JB to come get me.”
“I do,” you repeated as you retrieved it from your cabinets for him, “and thank you.”
“This tea was made by the old lady that I got your flowers from,” he told you as he pulled out a mason jar from the bag and transferred it into the kettle to heat up on the stove, “She wrote down the instructions to it on the extra package of dried petals in this bag if ever you want to make it fresh.”
“That’s so sweet of you!” you exclaimed as you were packing up leftovers for him to take home. A familiar song then played on your radio and you smiled.
“This is such a classic song,” Hyunwoo commented.
“It is,” you agreed, “It was my grandparents’ special song.”
“Was it?” Hyunwoo replied and hummed a few bars as the song played. “Unforgettable is such a great song.” You smiled at him and nodded your head in agreement.
You had finished packing the food for Hyunwoo when the tea kettle whistled. After you placed two mugs on the counter, Hyunwoo poured servings for you and him to share. You both picked up your mugs and clinked them together.
“It’s rose lemon honey tea,” he informed you as you took a sip.
The moment the flavor hit your tastebuds, images of your dream began to flood back to you. You saw the face of the man you dreamt of pop up in your head several times and it matched that of the man who was standing beside you at this very minute. Your heart began to race.
“Hyunwoo,” you said as you subtly placed your mug on the countertop that you took hold of to steady yourself, “What’s your last name?”
“Son,” he answered after taking another sip from his mug, “Why do you ask?”
It’s him, you said to yourself, He’s real. “Just curious,” you replied and picked up your mug to mask your smile.
You stood side by side, silently drinking tea while listening to your grandparents’ song as you began to remember all the details to the dream you had the night before. Rosemarie and Rainer, blanket forts and bubble baths and dancing to this same song as you did on your wedding day.
“Hyunwoo,” you said breaking the silence, “I’m going to need these containers back, if you don’t mind.” You needed to come up with an excuse to see him again.
Hyunwoo nodded and looked down at his cup. “I don’t mind,” he replied, “And maybe when I do, I can take you out on a date or something.” You looked up at him trying to hide the smile forming on your face. “If you don’t mind,” he added as he turned to look at you with a shy smile on his face.
“I’d like that very much,” you accepted, the blush very evident on your cheeks. Your hand brushed his and as it did, he intertwined his fingers with yours. You stood there in comfortable silence, connected while sipping tea, listening to a song that now had special meaning to the both of you.
You took a deep breath and let out a contented sigh as the dream details continued to come back to you and you couldn’t help but smile. You felt Hyunwoo affectionately squeeze your hand he held in his. You weren’t delusional thinking that real life would ever be as perfect as that dream you had...but knowing that he was now a part of your reality was already a dream come true.

30 Days of Jyrus, Day 6
Title: Hard Hitting Journalistic Integrity
Summary: Cyrus, a reporter for a celebrity news magazine and website, gets roped into interviewing pop sensation Jonah Beck. (This fic is epistolary, it’s all emails and email attachments).
To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: Can you cover for me?
Hey Cyrus,
I know this is last minute, but I really need someone to cover my interview assignment next week. My parents are coming into town, and I really need to make time to see them, or I’ll never hear the end of it. Metcalf says I can take the week off if I find someone to cover my assignments.
It’ll be easy. You just meet the guy, talk with him for a bit, ask some questions that I’ve already put together from the research I’ve been doing, and then write it all up. I’ve heard that he’s really nice, as pop-stars go.
Thanks so much,
Andi
To: Andi Mack ([email protected])
Subject: Re: Can you cover for me?
I’ll do it, but you so owe me. You know I hate interviewing.
To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: Re: Re: Can you cover me?
You’re the best!! I sent the questions to Mr. Beck’s manager, and he’s gonna send you back the ones he approves of. I promise I’ll make it up to you!

Dear Mr. Goodman,

Respectfully,
Marty Evans

To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: Hi!
Hi!
This is Jonah Beck. I wanted to touch base with you before the interview. I’m thrilled that you’re interviewing me, because I love to read your articles in Celebrity Life. It’s one of the reasons I agreed to this interview in the first place. Most websites and magazines are very invasive, but I always found Celebrity Life to be trustworthy. But you usually don’t do interviews. Are you a fan? ;)
Jonah  Beck
To: Jonah Beck ([email protected])
Subject: Re: Hi!
Mr. Beck,
Thank you for reaching out. I assure you that I am only covering for a coworker. I do enjoy your music, but I would never intentionally seek out an interview. I’ll see you on Monday.
Cyrus Goodman
To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: How was the interview?
Hey, Cyrus!
Thank you again for covering for me. How did it go? I hope it went well. I know you hate pop-stars, but he seems pretty down to earth and I know you listen to his music, so I was hoping that it wouldn’t be too much of a disaster.
Andi
To: Andi Mack ([email protected])
Subject: Re: How was the interview?
It was good. I’ll send you the rough draft by tomorrow.
To: Buffy Driscoll ([email protected])
Subject: I fucked up
I attached my rough draft of the Jonah Beck interview, please read it. You’ll see. It’s too personal. His publicist won’t like it. I’m so screwed. Help.
JONAH BECK INTERVIEW ROUGH DRAFT
It’s a crisp September morning when I walk into the Belvedere Hotel to meet Jonah Beck. He’s sitting on the bed of the hotel room, strumming his guitar. Jonah Beck is a handsome and charming young man, but his demeanor is not that of a confident pop-star, instead he quiet and polite, offering me a sparkling water from the mini-fridge. He himself has apparently decided on tea with honey and lemon, probably to preserve his voice for the night’s concert. “The truth is I hate sparkling water,” he says. “I’m just trying to pawn it off on you.”
CELEBRITY LIFE MAGAZINE: You’re playing a sold out stadium show tonight. That must be a crazy feeling.
JONAH BECK: It’s absolute insane. I’m so lucky to have this life. Music is so
important to me, and it’s a dream come true to be able share this important part of my life with so many people. And I really do have the best fans in the world.
CLM: Best fans in the world? Even the crazy fan-girls?
JB: [laughs] Even them. Everyone has to fan-girl over something.
CLM: What do you fan-girl over?
JB: Truthfully? Professional Ultimate Frisbee players. But please, don’t publish that.
CLM: Sorry, buddy. This is all on record.
JB: [laughs] There go all my fan-girls.
CLM: You mentioned that music is a big part of your life. How long have you been playing music?
JB: I started playing music when I was thirteen years old. I, uh, struggle with some anxiety and music was, is, very therapeutic for me. It helped me find a little more confidence in who I really am, as opposed to who the people around me wanted me to be.
CLM: People around you? Like your family?
JB: My family, and honestly everyone in my life. My parents divorced when I was fourteen, but it was a longtime coming. I was a profoundly unhappy teenager, but I hid it really well. Music was the one outlet I had for all my negative emotions. I’m not sure how it became a career, but here we are.
CLM: Here we are indeed. I’m sorry to learn about your parents’ divorce. How has coming from that kind of background influenced your music?
JB: I think a lot of my love songs are more bittersweet than you expect from pop-music. My family is a huge inspiration—I talk to my little sister at least once a week—and I try to go home to my dad’s house for a few holidays. Without their support I never would’ve made it this far.
CLM: It’s going to be a challenge for you to make it home while you’re on tour.
JB: Unfortunately, that’s true. But I’m extremely lucky to be kicking off a world tour in six months. I get about six weeks off before the tour, so I’ll be spending it all with my family.
CLM: Where are you most excited to go?
JB: Germany. I have some extended family there.
CLM: Are you excited to meet fans from all over the world?
JB: Absolutely. Like I said, best fans anyone could ask for.
CLM: What will you be listening to on the tour bus? Favorite album?
JB: To be perfectly honest? Arianna Grande. God is definitely a woman. [laughs]
CLM: Oh, isn’t Amber Diamond going on tour with Arianna Grande?
JB: Uh…Yeah….
CLM: Shit, sorry. I wasn’t supposed to talk about her.
JB: It’s okay. I don’t hold any resentment towards Amber. We weren’t right for each other, but I handled it poorly. I don’t blame her for lashing out in the press.
CLM: That’s very emotionally mature of you. I mean, she told the tabloids that you’re gay. Which is a fucked up thing to do. If you’re straight, it’s a lie that will follow you for the rest of your career. And if it’s true, she outed you to the whole world.
JB: Yeah. It’s not true, for the record. I’m not gay. I’m bisexual.
CLM:: Wow, uh. Wow. I won’t print that if you don’t—
JB: Print it. I don’t care. I was never really hiding it. I don’t fall in love with someone because of their gender. I fall in love with someone because of the color of their eyes, the way they smile, how they talk to me. It doesn’t matter what gender someone is or how they present. What matters is who they are.
CLM: That’s beautiful.
JB: I do write my own lyrics, y’know.
CLM: From deep and poetic to totally sarcastic in five seconds flat. Impressive. That must be what the fan-girls like about you.
JB: I would hope they’d like my music.
CLM: That too.
To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: Re: I fucked up
Calm down, Cy. There’s a salvageable interview in here. You just need some editing. I’ve got this. But holy shit, he came out in this interview. That’s huge. He must’ve really liked you.
Buffy
PS: You owe me one.
To: Buffy Driscoll ([email protected])
Subject: Re: Re: I fucked up
What do you mean, “he must really like me”?
To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: Re: Re: Re: I fucked up
I mean, based on that transcript, you two were totally flirting. Tell me you got his number. You have to go out with him.
To: Buffy Driscoll ([email protected])
Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: I fucked up
HA. You are absolutely out of your mind. I’m not going to go on a date with Jonah Beck.
To: Cyrus Goodman ([email protected])
Subject: Interview follow-up.
Dear Cyrus,
I just read the article! It came out great. But I think we need to do an interview follow up as soon as possible. Maybe this Friday night over dinner? I can pick you up at 7.  How does that sound?
Jonah Beck

11 questions game
tagged by @raptorlily, who prepared 11 questions for her tag-ees:
1. The core four + Kevin and Cheryl are attending a literary character party. What costume does each of them wear? Bonus: What costumes are the Southside Serpent characters wearing?
OH BOY. well, betty is elizabeth bennett. her instinct is obviously be nancy drew, but then decides she wants to play dress up a little bit. she tries valiantly to get jughead into a darcy couples costume, but his instinct is to just be sal paradise because he won’t have to buy anything for the costume.
betty tells him that if she’s not going to be nancy, he should go outside the box too. he then decides on dressing like the titular mummy from jane loudon’s the mummy! (he’s still a weirdo, remember)
veronica goes as daisy buchanan if not purely for the extravagant opportunity to dress like a flapper, archie comes as jim hawkins from treasure island, cheryl bucks expectation and attends as a female robin hood (she already loves archery), and kevin is absolutely sherlock holmes. he’d look so natural in a trenchcoat!
2. What extracurricular activities are Reggie, Ethel, Fangs, Midge, Toni and Sweetpea involved in?
besides sports, reggie’s extracurricular activity is definitely selling ground up oregano to middle schoolers and telling them it’s weed.
ethel is canonically a drama geek and that’s valid, but she’s also probably in band. i’m gonna go with....flutist.
fangs is also canonically a drama geek and a regular geek (less we not forget jughead used a larping club to lure fangs out of a self-imposed suspension) so i honestly am just waiting for him and kev to start up their dungeons and dragons club. (wow they are perfect for each other tho??? a dorkier bughead)
midge (RIP) was probably into 4-H bc i can’t get the concept of “klump farms” out of my head. she seemed like a genuinely sweet person who also was a regular teenager and was a cheerleader and probably volunteered at hospitals too idk
toni wanted to get laid so bad she became a cheerleader. or, ok, seriously i mean my headcanon is like, it’s bring it on, where toni was into gymnastics and dance in a v serious way but southside didn’t offer any curriculars that would allow her to do that, and she couldn’t afford gymnastics herself. turns out the closest thing riverdale has is cheerleading, which’ll do.
sweet pea is probably the lowkey nerdiest of them all. i was joking earlier that he’s probably secretly into anime, but more seriously: feel like he’d go for basketball officially and also probably has an interest in engineering. i mean, that interest began with pipe bombs, but. yanno. ya dreams gotta start somewhere!!!
3. Give me three of your favourite headcanons for Reggie
had a crush on betty until high school
does his dumbest shit for his dad’s attention, painfully unsubtle about it
is cripplingly afraid of being alone, which is why he surrounds himself by teammates at all times and/or can’t get past the pack mentality. has difficulty being vulnerable in spite of all that, can’t be honest with himself and/or with others.
4. It’s Saturday night and the core four are all hanging out by themselves at home. What is each of them up to?
betty is listening to the memory palace podcast while laying on her bed, feet crossed up in the air, doing her homework. cleaned her room earlier. wants to call polly. she doesn’t. stays up till two am for no reason other than her room is warm and full of golden light and it’s the only time the house is quiet. plugged back in her old nightlight, half out of spite after polly nearly threw it out, half genuinely. sometimes she thinks she’s still afraid of the dark. the irony isn’t lost on her.
jughead is working on his novel, american crime story is playing on the TV in the background, a bag of popcorn slowly rotating in the microwave. the trailer is empty and he chooses to think his dad is at work. emails his sister. he doesn’t remember when, but they’ve stopped talking about their mom. his tattoo itches. toni told him not to scratch at it.
veronica is drinking chamomile tea on a tray, scrolling through pinterest and making a european vacation mood board for the post-graduation trip she’d like to take with her friends. she wants to surprise them with it, all-expenses paid. she resists the urge to book flights years in advance. browses the barney’s website. doesn’t know why she gets such a thrill from online shopping. isn’t sure why she can’t stop.
archie is in the garage, his fingers strumming aimlessly over the strings of his guitar. wonders why his mother can’t be a lawyer here in riverdale. isn’t sure if music was ever his own, or something he thought he should want, because he didn’t want to work construction. or worse, because a woman found it attractive. brought his history textbook out with the intention to study. doesn’t. practices wonderwall, even though jughead laughs whenever the song comes upon.
5. What’s your headcanon for Jughead’s hat? Why does he wear it? What’s the origin story?
his mom made it when he was a kid, and growing up in threadbare clothes donated down the line of serpents or thrift store finds, it was the one thing that was truly his---made for him. with love.
being scrawny and quiet and outgrowing his pants too fast to replace them already set him apart. might as well let the hat seal the deal.
6. What is your Riverdale guilty pleasure ship? One that you don’t necessarily ship in canon but wouldn’t mind reading fanfiction for?
don’t think i have one, honestly?
7. Can Chuck be redeemed in your eyes? Any caveats or things that would need to happen to make this count?
yeah, it’s really interesting answer this question post 2x18, but---yes, i definitely think chuck can be redeemed. i never wanted him to be a villain in the first place, for so, so many reasons.
i mean, comics!chuck was a deliberate bucking of specific stereotypes that riverdale slid right back into without seeming to think about what it was they were saying by doing that. (related readings: x) and then the way they did it---ack.
outside of the vacuum of comics vs. show, i think that where we’re at culturally, we’re really asking men to unlearn their toxic masculinity. especially of adolescents who are still growing and changing---and what chuck did was certainly part of the vacuum of male privilege/toxic masculinity, but he faced consequences  for that, and then he acknowledged it. actively has announced he wants to change, and i genuinely believe it at this point.
and while i wish chuck wasn’t the character they’re doing this with in the first place, “cancelled culture” can be really frustrating because it’s way too binary. it undermines the growth and self-crit we want people to be doing.
obviously, it doesn’t apply unilaterally, some people are abusive or cruel or malicious to the point where they lose their ability to profit off of it, and rightfully so---but with a character like chuck, whose main crime appeared to just be slut shaming, i actually appreciate a narrative where a male character owns up to how that was bad, why it was wrong, and how they’re going to change.
8. What is a storyline you’d like to see most explored on the show?
just---more familial dynamics. i cannot wait for gladys and JB, i think that’s going to be so meaty and tragic and emotional in the right ways. i want more of polly and betty’s relationship, and/or how betty feels watching her sister run away constantly, or just their dynamic in general. more of archie and fred navigating dreams vs. reality. i kinda don’t love veronica’s parents tho, and i’m not sure where they could take that in a way that i enjoy.
9. What is your favourite Riverdale fanfic trope or cliché?
pining, man. just. pining.
10. What is existing scene or storyline would you rewrite to better suit your tastes?
HAH. how much time do we have
BONUS:  Archie starts a band. He settles on ‘The Archies’ but what were some of the other suggestions for the band name? Name three songs that show up on their debut album.
jughead’s suggestion is: red drum, red drum and he thinks it’s hilarious
three songs: midnight ride, smoking gun, and can’t fly
my 11 questions for my taggees
1. which twist did you least see coming? genuinely.
2. we all know riverdale loves hopscotching through genre elements (true crime, musical, grease, etc), and sometimes it’s too much, but which has been your favorite? what other ones would you like to see from the show?
3. riverdale does dirty on its secondary characters. what storylines would you give to reggie, kevin, josie, etc? or, what would you like to see for them in s3? anything you thought the show really fumbled? did right?
4. what are your backstory headcanons for sweet pea, fangs, and toni?
5. what’s your theory on the old riverdale riots?
6. it’s the ten year high school reunion. where did everyone go to college? (core four + the secondary pals) what’s your headcanon for their future careers? who’s still together? who wishes they were still together? who hooks up unexpectedly in a storage closet?
7. what’s a storyline you just didn’t buy this season?
8. any headcanons for the riverparents? like, how they grew up, who they were in high school, why they went the directions they did?
9. what’s one trope that you’d wish the show would do? or something you wish you saw more in fic?
10. thoughts on reggie? will he ever be fleshed out? will it make him more of a villain, or less of one?
11. if you could have anything happen in s3, what would it be?
and i tag @village-skeptic @stillscape @sylwrites @lessoleilscouchants @myrmidonofmelodrama @heartunsettledsoul @raptorlily (tagging back, bc i want your answers on these too!) @theatreofexpression @imreallyloveleee

YEAR OF WHAT HAPPENS ON EARTH STAYS ON EARTH
[longer version of what I contributed to the new yorker’s year-end package. you can read that here, and listen to the accompanying megamix the video team made! links to previous year’s lists at bottom.] I did not grow up going to church, and I am not a particularly religious person. A few days after the inauguration, I wandered into a nearby church and took a seat in the back pews. I’d gone there right after the election. There was some time for anyone with anything on their mind to stand up and speak. If you need others to pray for you, just let us know. A middle-aged black man in a leather jacket got up and began telling us about an argument he was having with a friend on Facebook. It was about the election, but it was actually about the intractability of racism. He was getting frustrated while describing it to us, in part because he seemed to value being the cool and level-headed one. Plus he was describing the kind of argument millions of people were having on the Internet. “I just hope he finds peace,” the guy said. He paused, then put his hands on his chest. “On a lighter note, today would have been Jimi Hendrix’s seventy-fourth birthday.” He opened up his leather jacket to show everyone his Hendrix t-shirt. “I just wanted to say that, because he was just awesome.” So I returned here, the day after marching through Manhattan with a poster that said “HOLD ON, BE STRONG.” I needed to be in a room that was powered by something other than hate--to be reminded of vision and purpose, even if they weren’t mine to claim. To listen to wisdom gleaned from a book I’ve never read, and pick and choose what I wanted. To hear others pour themselves into songs I never, ever sing along to. I wanted to steal their vibes.  Instead of a hymn, they passed out small pieces of paper with the lyrics of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” This is not the type of church people come to for the music. The pianist started playing, and I remember thinking about how it felt like magic when I learned how to play those chords as a kid. I couldn’t believe we were doing this. We sang, tentatively at first, as though we could not believe these words in this space. Picture it: singing of “no heaven” and “no religion, too,” with humility and hope, inside a house of worship. It was like an admission that faith was inadequate. All we had was one another. “Imagine” is a song I’ve heard millions of times, the type of song that is so ubiquitous that we rarely bother scrutinizing its words, its vantage point, the possibility that someone wrote these words because he actually believed them. I sang along with a room of strangers, and we looked at one another, and, for the first time in months, I began to cry.   TWO LYRICS THAT REMINDED ME OF POLITICS EVEN IF THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS "Wrote this shit January 21″ “Take me back to November / Take me back to November” “I’M AN ANGRY TEENAGER” Novelist, “Street Politician” ONCE THEY START, I HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE END Jim O’Rourke’s recently unearthed cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” Kanye’s sitcom-length remix of “Bed” THURSDAY NIGHTS ON NBC Ross from Friends’ very Madchester guitar-y Boiler Room set DJ Seinfeld, Time Spent Away from U Nino Man, Jadakiss and Styles P, “Friends”
