Me the other day, wanting to write Katriel but I haven’t read the actual novel so I’m scared I’ll butcher her characterization: oh I....better....not....
*hours of research leads to me discovering that the characterization in the book was all over the place and not even entirely present for Katriel and she is reduced to tropes and is more defined by her looks than her personality in the eyes of the narrator and her potential is wasted under a male-centric lens*
Me, rubbing my grubby little canon divergent hands together:
*to the tune of Ghostbusters*
When a badass girl
is ruined for the male gaze

#[mari the meme queen ; ooc]#so uh yeah in short I did a deep dive on The Stolen Throne and Katriel last night and was slightly mortified#and at the same time extremely encouraged to add her to my WIP multi#headcanons are a magical thing#and I guess I don't have to worry about stepping on any rich characterization because#her characterization in the novel is basically ''she's pretty and sneaky and oppressed-ish and Maric is DTF and she's pretty *winky face* ''#S I G H#I really hope its not as bad as all the reviews and essays and stuff make it out to be#I still want to read it and plan to do so in the next month or two#but dear lord here I was reading about this tragic elven bard named katriel by chance#but then when I do a deep dive to find out okay who is she REALLY#even the writers apparently don't know who she is outside of her relevance to Maric and company#I pray that I'm wrong#and that the writers didn't just completely waste Katriel (AND QUEEN ROWAN OF ALL PEOPLE FFS) outside of a few bright spots#but am I still going to take this as an opportunity to write a highly canon divergent Katriel that's 99% headcanons#source material be damned?#YOU BET YOUR ASS
