Can I just add that when you're a "YA" author, you're essentially walking a tightrope with those golden weights from Mulan tied around your wrists?
If you write younger content / stuff with 12 - 15 year old protagonists dealing with first crushes / first kisses & which is aimed at kids who are just starting to outgrow childrens' books? That's for 10 - 14 year olds, but it'll still be marketed to older teens & adults because it's "YA". In turn, that'll make older teens feel alienated because they don't want to read about someone younger than them, and it'll likely go over a parents' head unless their child specifically points it out to them.
If you write more mature content, featuring drugs, alcohol, relationships, sex and trauma, with a 16 - 21 year old protagonist? That's for older teens and adults, but it'll still get marketed to 12 year olds because it's "YA". In turn, this will make the 12 year old think they're mature enough for adult content (not always true), and it'll make adults buy it for themselves rather than for their 17 year old.
Writing YA means trying to juggle mature themes like sex, drugs, relationships & alcohol in a way which makes parents approve of, teens relate to and tweens get excited about, all while trying to put in subtle indicators (in the cover, in the language in the blurb, etc) for which area of YA you're aiming for, even though this will not matter in algorithms. It'd matter in a bookstore or a library, but not online stores, which is where a large amount of people are getting their books now.
What I'm trying to say is that "YA" means 12+ & centres around characters aged from 13 to 21 but will likely be read by 10 year olds and 40 year olds alike. "YA" seems to be more practical to use to define content and themes (coming of age, first time experiencing something which separates your life into "before x" and "after x", majorly life-altering events which force you to grow up very quickly when you don't yet have the skillset required to be a functioning adult, young heroes taking down corruption) rather than age. More and more "YA" books are focusing on adults who read it rather than the teens / young adults it's named after.
Small detour, but it's relevant:
I think there's a lot of similarities between the YA market for books & Marvel / Disney.
Marvel & Disney tell stories about fairies and superheroes and children and magic. So that is aimed at children... right? BUT then, to appeal to a wider demographic, it'll make the attitudes of the characters appeal to teens - cue the moody anti-heroes and the relatable villains and the traumatised heroes entering the scene. THEN, to get the parents to agree to watch it, they'll make the cast a few years older than their characters and more attractive in an adult's eye than a child's. They'll throw some adult jokes and comments into the promotional material to catch the adults' attention while they go over the childrens' heads and make the teens feel grown-up when they understand them. THEN to keep the adults engaged, they'll throw in mature themes like politics and family responsibility, fidelity, etc., but they'll twist it just so, in order for the teens to empathise with it and for the children to feel empowered by it even if they don't fully grasp it - because they don't need to grasp anything other than the layer aimed at them.
Suddenly, its magic and superheroes aren't just for little kids anymore. Suddenly, they're able to be marketed towards every age group at the same time.
And THAT is what is happening to YA. On the surface, it looks like it's just 13 - 17 year olds reading it, because aren't they young adults? Isn't that who is supposed to read YA books? But then it's loved by 10 year olds and 50 year olds alike, because it has layers which appeal to wider demographics than just teens.
Potter, Hunger games, Twilight & Divergent all became popular because of how they united the age groups consuming them. An 8 year old, a 13 year old, a 24 year old and a 45 year old could all talk about the same book and understand each other and feel listened to and have their views appreciated - which is the exact same reason The Avengers are popular, because you'll have all those age ranges dressing up as the same character and being excited about it.
(Also, the fact most successful YA books are actually YA franchises which allow the reader to grow up with the protagonist, is the same logic used by Marvel / Disney in the sense that continuing to make Avengers movies and spin-offs and giving each individual character their own sub-franchise within the collective franchise will continue to pull fans back because they can see themselves growing up and maturing with their favourite characters.)
YA is the one "group" of books which allows adults to feel young again, and that is what makes them popular - they're the only ones which tell adults in their 40s and 60s and 80s that it's OK to sometimes still feel as awkward as a 13 year old or as out of your depth as a 17 year old at the same time and that's not a bad thing. THAT feeling, that feeling of being young again, of being understood, of being rebellious in the face of authority, of being the only one standing your ground... THAT is the thing that sells YA books.
So, like, the thing you have to understand is that prior to the mid-2000s, the "Young Adult" genre as we now know it didn't exist. The expectation was that you would graduate to the adult aisle of the book store at, like, 13-14. This worked because the only people still reading long form novels into their teens were precocious bookworms who were better read than their parents.
Harry Potter changed all this. The success of the Harry Potter books convinced the publishing industry that selling full length novels to normie children was a business model. The thing about the Harry Potter books, though, is that at least for the early books, the target audience was a bit younger than what we think of as the YA demographic; tweens, rather than teens. Now, the publishing very much wanted to keep all these normie kids buying books into their teens and beyond, but the previous model of treating teens as functionally adults for marketing purposes would not work; there was simply no way that normie parents were going to let their normie kids read fully adult novels where the characters, like, do drugs or have unprotected sex and stuff. So, in order to be allowed to market to the teen demographic, the YA genre was created.
However, teens have an inherent interest in reading about sex and violence and drugs, and so authors who are able to incorporate these kinds of themes into their YA novels in a discrete way such that it flies under the radar of the moral guardians are met with success. But this is a precarious tightrope to walk. Not enough "mature" themes and the teens will loose interest, to much or to blatant and the teens won't be allowed to read it. And so, it should come as no surprise, that the first person to successfully navigate this tight rope was a Mormon housewife with a vampire fetish.

hello fellow dungeon meshi fan. Do you know what age rating the manga is? Ive seen people say various things (such as 18+ 14+ 15+ and 13+) so im not sure.
Ive read the whole manga myself online, however im bad at judging stuff myself. I just want to get the physical copies but i wasnt sure. (Im 16, turning 17 this year)
I know its got the (semi?)nudity with some of the monsters. (Harpy, falin, mermaids, minotaur) but im fairly sure naruto does as well (i watched a few episodes of the anime years ago) but my memorys pretty bad so im not sure what it would be

I think Yen Press rating it T (Teen) is fairly fitting, its has aspects of violence (though usually not excessive/realistic gore, the most you usually see are blood and bones, any time you see actual innards or anything is pretty much always in the context of taking them from monsters and cooking them), bad language (swearing and such), and some level of sexual content (though as you point out, its mostly some partial nudity and other instances where its not generally meant to be sexual (with a couple mild exceptions.) It certainly has its dark moments but in my experience its nothing worse than what you can potentially see in a lot of YA novels and other fantasy stories aimed at teens. Generally I think a 16/17 year old could read it without much issue as long as they know what they're getting into in terms of genre.

Translation of Victor Valentine’s 4* ‘’Gothic Halloween’’ card story from ‘Helios Rising Heroes’.
Gray: Uwah, amazing… Did you make this, Victor-san…?
Victor: Yes, this robot was built by me. I’m occupied with pouring all my time into producing these for the upcoming Halloween League.
Gray:  I had assumed you were leaning more towards biochemistry… But to be able to build robots too, that’s seriously amazing...
Victor: As you thought my area of expertise is chemistry, however if I had to be honest, I barely have the confidence to manufacture these… 
Victor: And on top of it, I had been also struggling with the design itself...
Gray: Eh… Wondering if it has enough punch to it, you mean… I already think it’s scary enough as is though....
Victor: Adding that pinch of “scary” has been considerably difficult. I’ve been making these as requested by Marion, but as far as the details go, I’ve only received how it should be thematically based on “evil spirits of Halloween”.
Victor: Naturally I have referred to literature to form a general outline on the matter, but what traits resemble an “evil spirit”, about it having a factor of “spookiness” to it...  No matter how far I go with investigating the matter, I simply cannot draw the line where it’d be most suitable.
Gray: Like evil spirits… spookiness….
Victor: What is your impression of it, Gray? Do you think it’s able to represent those traits of an “evil spirit”?
Gray: Eh? Eeeh… uh, um…
Victor: Please do not hold yourself back, and be as candid as you can.
Gray: Be as candid as I can… Right, right...
Gray: Whether or not it looks like one, I can say that it’s absolutely close but… Um… on the contrary, it might actually be a bit too scary... 
Gray: H-how do I say this… It’s like originally you were going for CERO A but ended up heading towards CERO D instead…?
Victor: CERO……? What may that be?
Gray: Ah… awawah, sorry…. I used a game rating system for scale… a Japanese one too…
Gray: The Halloween League is an event that children will attend, in terms of gaming that would be for an event for all ages...
Gray: But, as of now it feels more that it’s heading towards a more mature audience… So I was thinking all like, how about aiming for a younger one instead~... but please don’t mind it too much...
Victor: Hmm, I see…That is very interesting, or I should rather say an intriguing point of view.
Victor: I will do as you said and make an attempt to aim for a younger demographic, however with how it has been currently going, I don’t quite have the grasp on what I should do to change it.
Victor: If you don’t mind, could you tell me more about video games for all ages to use as a reference point going forward?
Gray: !! O-ofcourse…!

Victor: Hooh.... Even though it’s shortly summed up as for all ages, there seems to be quite a variety of video games.
Gray: For now I kept it limited and looked up horror games that came to mind… You’d come across even more games if you were to look it up
Gray: Uuum… if you’re looking for a game that has enemies that are “evil spirit”-like, then maybe this one…?
Victor: Yes, that kind of caricature is good. It gives an impression closely resembling the ones in animation for children. 
Gray: P-personally I think it’s good if it’s as scary as these enemy characters here but… That is for you to decide...
Victor: Hmm…. If I were to judge from your perspective, would this be more scarier?
Gray: Eh? Yes… it, would be….?
Gray: I feel, that the difference is pretty obvious but… you don’t seem to think so, Victor-san?
Victor: Indeed. Even though we’re going in a different direction, I don’t feel that any of them are frightening, thus making it difficult to judge.
Gray: R-right…
Gray: Uh… I’m just asking this out of curiosity but… Is there, something that you’re scared of, Victor-san…?
Victor: Something that I’m scared of?
Gray: Ah, aaah, uuum, it’s just… it’s okay if it’s too hard to answer, or if you don’t want to! I suddenly asked something weird anyway, I’m sorry….
Victor: Fufu, what are you apologizing for? I don’t believe it was odd by any means.
Victor: Something I’m scared of… you ask? I haven’t played any video games before so on that matter I have nothing to say, and in regards to horror movies I don’t recall being frightened once. 
Gray: Eh… so you’re like, totally fine with ghosts and demons and all that…?
Victor: More that I don’t believe in such things due to my point of view as a scientist, rather than being fine with it.
Victor: Well, realistically speaking “Ghosts believing scientists” such as Nova are not too uncommon out there.
Victor: I do want to believe in the possibility of it… Unfortunately, I have yet to see a theory that justifies it to begin with. 
Gray: Wah… you’re amazing, Victor-san…. Makes me a bit embarrassed given how I accidentally believe in anything...
Victor: No, I wouldn’t say that I am. I do occasionally envy those who are able to simply enjoy horror movies as is.
Gray: Is that so…?
Victor: Do you have any issues when it comes to horror and occult, Gray?
Gray: Aah, no… I’ve built up a tolerance for it because of games that are full of it...
Gray: Besides, I think… humans are scarier than any ghost or demon, 100 times more scarier even….
Victor: Human themselves…. For example, such as Asch Albright?
Gray: !! Eh, eeeeh…. yes… His name alone makes me sweat bullets, weirdly enough...
Gray: But, not just A….sch, but I’m scared of coming in contact with other people in general...
Gray: Even before talking to them actually, like what if they hate me…. what if they think I’m weird… that’s all I end up thinking about
Victor: Which means that you are currently feeling the same sense of dread when talking to me this moment?
Gray: T-that’s right… Aaah, but, you’re not scary Victor-san… Um, it’s just...
Victor: Yes, I understand. I’ve mentioned it before, but I don’t believe there’s anything odd about you, Gray. 
Gray: V-Victor-san….!
Victor: My apologies for getting us sidetracked. Could you lend me your wisdom for a little longer? 
Gray: Ah, yes… yes of course!

Victor: I was able to because of the advice I had received from Gray, and so I was finally able to see the light.
Nova: Good pals with Gray-kun now, eh? Well with Ren-kun too but, lately more people have been dropping by your lab. Lookit this celebrity here~♪
Victor: ...You’re surprisingly in a good mood today, aren’t you now?
Nova: Mmh, haven’t slept so I’m feeling somewhat all over the place
Nova: I’ve been absorbed into making these robots too, and before I knew it three whole days had passed~ That scared me real good, yanno
Nova: Wait a second, nobody came to see me in these three days….!? I wanna be a celeb tooooo~!
Victor: How about resting your mind and body, rather than dawdling around here?
Nova: Naaw~ The adrenaline’s coursing through my veins, not feeling tired in the slightest~ 
Nova: Whatever you say, making these robots is right where I belong. Had lotsa fun doing it too
Nova: Obviously I’m paying enough attention to safety and all that, but there’s more space to feel at ease compared to what I usually do for work….
Nova: Not that I’m forgetting substance research by any means, it’s just pretty nerve-racking when combined with making assets and tools for the heroes to fight with 
Nova: Didn’t mean to pay that much mind to it, still it’s a heavy responsibility to have one’s life in your hands... 
Nova: Makes me go all like, damn, this fear of failure and what to do about it sure is always growing ain’t it now!~ like some kinda realisation each time, yanno
Victor: ….., fear….
Nova: You’re always doing such a fantastic job, me~
Nova: A Summerfieldtastic job~....
Victor: …….
Nova: Eh, no response!? Here I was putting all my energy into being an idiot, and instead of straight manning me, you straight up ignore me!?

The Japanese game rating goes from CERO A to D, and Z. All ages would be CERO A, for 12 years old and above CERO B, for 15 years old and above CERO C, for 17 years old and above CERO D, and at last CERO Z for 18 and above. The European one is PEGI with age specific ratings (PEGI-3, or PEGI-18) and the American one is ESRB, with letter codes such as T for teen, M for mature, and so on. Helios is rated as 12+ on the Apple app store, that would be CERO A, PEGI-12 or ESRB T.

What a Beautiful Wedding Ch. 6: The Wings of the Antarctic Empire
Summary: Tommy is desperate to convince Phil and Techno they’re in some kind of trap and he’d like to be taken seriously just once.

Tommy found himself at the foot of the long, tall black stone staircase. Philza was looking down at him.
When he set his foot on the first step, Techno drew his sword and stepped in front of Phil. “I don’t think so.”
“Phil!” Tommy yelled up. “Yer[1] both in some kinda[2] illusion. Wake up.”
About five guards appeared from almost nowhere and aimed their arrows at him, Tommy recognized the pink of Niki’s hair among them. Techno took two steps down from the altar.
“Take ‘em ta the holdin’ room,”[3] Phil ordered, spreading his wings and he held the baby close to him as he flew off.
“Let’s go,” Techno ordered as he walked down the steps, Tommy found himself at the dangerous end of Techno’s sword. “Come on.”
Tommy held his hands up and turned, which resulted in Techno pushing Tommy forward.
“Don’t fuckin’[4] shove me!” Tommy shouted, but Techno and Niki lead them to the palace.
Tommy sat down in some uncomfortable chair as Techno and Niki stared at him. Ghostbur looked at Niki nervously.
“H-Hey,” Ghostbur smiled at Niki.
“Stay back,” Niki told him, bow and arrow pointed down, but not notched or ready to fire yet.
“The two of you are waiting until the old man gets back,” Techno told him.
“Techno, come on, man, you have ta[5] know this is Dream’s doin’[6],” Tommy groaned.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but if you’re not careful you will get yourself shot,” Techno warned.
The heavy doors of the room were pushed open and Phil walked in. The lack of snow or distance gave Tommy a good look at the man. Little things about Philza were different. His eye color for one. The Phil that Tommy had always known had blue eyes but now he had more of blue-green color. He was maybe an inch or two taller. Not any taller than the other people in the room but it was noticeable enough to Tommy. His blond hair had a slightly dustier tint to it.
Phil paused when he looked at Tommy. “Stand down.”
Niki took her arrow away from her bow, “If you’re sure.”
“Yeah, wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had a visitor like this,” Phil told them. “You two are from the future aren’tcha[7]?”
“Uh, yeah?” Tommy said. “We’re in an illusion. It’s Dream, he’s done somethin’[8].”
Philza just started staring at Ghostbur as a look of realization dawned on him. “I . . . Wilbur?”
“My name is Ghostbur,” Ghostbur corrected nervously, ducking behind Tommy a bit.
Niki seemed to recoil and Techno began slowly coming back to himself, clutching his head as he began grunting in pain and his knees crashed to the ground.
“Techno!” Phil rushed over.
“They’re too loud,” Techno grunted.
Tommy began stomping over, “What’s that green bastard doin’ ta yeh?”[9]
Phil used a wing to knock Tommy away before Techno was able to stab Tommy with a sword, his eyes a blood red and a frenzied look in his eyes.
“Tech, Tech, follow my voice, yeh[10] don’t need ta[5] fight here,” Phil told Techno as the warrior thrashed his head back and forth.
Niki inched closer and passed Phil a vial, he placed it under Techno’s nose and he began calming down.
“Thanks,” Phil said and inched closer. “Techno, yeh[10] need me ta[5] clear the room?”
“No, I,” Techno paused, swallowing. “I’ve got it.”
“What did that fucker do ta[5] you?” Tommy demanded. “It’s bad enough he’s got us trapped in here.”
“Dream’s not powerful enough for that,” Techno had a slight chuckle to his voice as he stood up.
“We still need ta[5] get out,” Tommy reminded him. “Tubbo an’[11] Ranboo are still trapped.”
Philza sighed, rather dramatically before he held his hand up and magic covered his hand before there was what felt like an earthquake and then a crash of some kind. Tommy, Shroud, and Ghostbur’s outfits changed into something that matched Phil and Techno’s. Tommy realized he was wearing a circlet, perched on his head and when he went to take it off to look at it he saw that it was studded with green and blue stones, and etched with perfect craftsmanship.
Tommy immediately rushed to the nearest window and saw at the foot of the palace, right outside the ground, an inn. And Tubbo stumbled out of it, looking around wildly. He was in an outfit that almost matched Tommy’s, but without the circlet and he was wearing thick gloves.
Ranboo followed after him, he was wearing a long purple cloak. But behind him, Michael was peeking his head out from behind Ranboo’s cloak.
Tommy immediately raced out of the palace, shoulding past guards and palace servants as he tried to get to Tubbo.
“Tubbo!” Tommy raced over but Tubbo glared at him, his false eye’s iris glowed with its radioactive symbol right before he punched Tommy in the gut.
“The fuck!” Tommy shouted angrily.
“I was safe!” Tubbo shouted in a fury. “Me an’[11] Ranboo an’[11] Michael were safe. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“I didn’t do anythin’[12],” Tommy shouted back in anger.
“T-Tubbo,” Ranboo warned, and tried to hide Michael in his cloak.
Tubbo stopped and looked past Tommy to see, to his horror, that Techno was watching them as Michael peeked his head around Ranboo’s cape, holding his larger hand in his much smaller one.
Techno’s eyes narrowed and Tubbo moved, scooping Michael up and glaring at Techno.
“Stay back!” Tubbo ordered Techno with an angry snarl. “Get away!”
Techno looked between the three of them, Michael just staring at Techno with huge, wide dark eyes, the gears clearly starting to turn in his head.
The warrior took a step forward and Ranboo took a step forward. “Techno! Techno! Wait please, don’t hurt them.”
“Are you with them?” Techno demanded.
“I, uh,” Ranboo clearly had a look of panic on his face. “Yeah, but look I just want you to know—”
“I don’t care what you spend your time with but did it have to be with the government?” Techno spat at Ranboo.
“He’s my husband, of course I spend time with him,” Ranboo told him.
“Ehhh!” Techno sputtered. “When did you get married?!”
“Almost a year ago?” Ranboo asked.
“A year? Why am I just learning now?” Techno told him. “I’m like your mentor, I should have been the first person you told.”
“You don’t like Tubbo,” Ranboo reminded.
“Because he and Quackity tried to kill me with axes, why would I like the guy?” Techno snapped.
“Well, yeah, that makes sense,” Ranboo admitted.
“Take the kid, we’ll go inside to Phil,” Techno jabbed his thumb at the palace. “And don’t worry, not killin’[13] the kid. He’s Ranboo’s too after all, right?”
“Yeah,” Ranboo answered.
“Good,” Techno told him but Tubbo still glared at Techno suspiciously. He followed at the back of the group, always braced to dump Michael into Tommy’s arms and pull out the first weapon he could get his hands on.
He only marginally calmed down when he saw Phil and Techno started complaining to Phil about Ranboo, and then balked when he found out Philza was already aware of the boy.
The little meet-up was interrupted when Jack Manifold raced in, in uniform after getting pulled in from the bubble Tubbo and Ranboo had been trapped in.
“Emperor! Enemy soldiers were spotted at the gate!” Jack yelled, the trio of teens and Niki stared at Phil in surprise.
“Where from?” Phil called out.
“From the Errin Empire,” Jack reported. “They were dressed like they were in the royal guard. We were able to apprehend them.”
“Shit,” Phil spat. “I want three guards in front ‘a[14] the nursery. Ranboo, take Michael an’[11] go with them. Niki, make sure no one gets in.”
“O-Okay,” Ranboo stammered nervously, grabbing Michael, and standing in front of Tommy expectantly. It took Tommy a bit to realize he was quietly asking Tommy to take Shroud. Tommy nodded and passed him over, Shroud became very upset to leave Tommy’s arms.
“On it!” Niki pushed Ranboo after the soldiers the instant he had both young boys in his arms.
“Tommy, Tubbo, behind me,” Philza ordered.
“Hold up, why are you the Emperor, yer[1] an anarchist?” Tubbo asked.
“We’ll talk about it later,” Techno interrupted as Puffy, Jack, and a couple soldiers dragged Chase and Jackie in.
“That’s new,” Techno hummed.
“We spotted an enemy force, we think it’s Lord Phantom,” Puffy announced.
Jackie turned to look out the window, seeing a wall of darkness in the sky, coming for them. “Storm’s comin’[15] in,” Jackie commented.
“That’s the Entity,” Phil corrected.
“What? Dark?” Chase perked up, starting to try and twist himself out of the rope tying his wrists behind his back.
Puffy kicked him down, so that he was face-down on the ground and placed a foot on his wrists. “Not so fast, buddy.”
“Puffy, let him up,” Phil ordered, “cut ‘em[16] both from their bonds.”
“You sure?” Puffy asked, taking her foot off.
“Yes,” Phil ruffled out his wings. “Battle stations! Average, can you talk Ent down?”
“I think so?” Chase said, rubbing at his wrists as he wisely kept his distance from Phil. “I just need ta[5] reach him, I didn’t forget so I imagine he’s still good too.”
The storm reached them and Phil started to hear the screams.
“How’d they sneak up that quickly?!” Jack yelled.
“Because none ‘a[14] this is real,” Phil told him.
The door was thrown open and Phantom was standing there in royal purple. “Phil, Techno, long time no see. It’s just like old times.”
“So yer[1] awake, then,” Phil sighed.
“Where’s Dark?” Chase demanded.
Phantom motioned with his head back, “Dealing with the town.”
“Then move outta[17] the fookin’[4] way,” Chase snarled.
“Aww, he’s having fun out there,” Phantom smiled.
“Here I’d hoped he wouldn’t work with yeh[10] again, yeh[10] always have been a shite[18] friend,” Phil glared at him.
“Ehh, we were both standing on the cliff, and he wanted to blow off some steam,” Phantom shrugged. “You know empaths, they get a little needy when they’re emotional so I just let him go off.”
“Fook[19] off,” Chase spat at him. “Jackie!”
Jackie grabbed Chase and they blitzed past Phantom, who rolled his eyes.
“Don’t blame me when he starts getting snippy,” Phantom scoffed, bracing as he smiled at Phil and Techno. “Let’s tango, boys.”
As Phantom braced for a fight, Chase raced out into the storm.
“Dark!” Chase screamed over the whirlwind of snow. Chase was racing towards the darkest part of the storm. “Dark!”
The darkness seemed to evaporate and Dark had some soldier by the throat, when he looked at Chase he paused. “Chase?”
“There yeh[10] are,” Chase felt relief, walking over, a rumbling passing through the bubble as it began weakening from outside attacks. “We’re goin’ home. Yer okay. I’m takin’ yeh home an’ yeh can relax.”[20]
Dark blinked in disorientation, he felt drained. Phantom must have snagged some of his aura when he wasn’t looking, or the anomaly was taking more from him than he realized. “Yeah, I think that’s for the best.”
Chase was almost within arms reach and Dark realized his body needed a nap because it was getting harder to focus on things.
“Hey, yeh[10] look tired,” Chase smiled as Jackie noticed something shooting towards them, but because of the coloration of the smoke he thought it a part of Dark’s aura.
At least until it hit Chase.
Something stabbed Chase right through the heart and the marksman knew he should be dead. But he felt something in his very soul snap. Dark flinched, his eyes widening in horror.
Chase knew should be dead, the human heart was a fragile organ, but as he was tossed to the side, he felt weak and was losing blood but his heart was too stubborn to stop beating and blood was still coming from somewhere. As his soul cracked in two before snapping back together, good as new.
“Hey, Dames,” Marc spat as he grabbed Dark and pulled him closer. “Let’s try this again.”
“How dare you? What did you do?” Dark spat at Marc as he looked at Chase in horror. He was only slightly calmed when he saw Chase starting to try and pick himself up, glaring murderously at Marc. But the Actor burst into smoke and ripped a portal open, dragging Dark with him.
When the portal snapped closed, it destroyed the bubble with it. Barely a second’s warning as it shattered and violently dropped all its inhabitants onto the floor.
The bubble the Actor disappeared into snagged the Sanders bubble and seemed to violently tear it in half as it pulled it inside.
Phil screamed in agony as his bad wing returned and reminded the avian demon that he’d been grounded for years now.
“Phil!” Techno rushed over to him in concern.
Chase looked around, becoming furious when he couldn’t see Dark. “Fooker! That fooker! I’m gonna kill him.”[21]
“Average stop movin’[22]!” Jackie yelled and raced over. “Henrik! Chase needs attention, now!”
“Let me go!” Chase snapped at Jackie who was looking at him like Chase had flesh hanging off his bones. “I’m fine.”
“Yeh[10] were stabbed in the fookin’[4] heart! Stop movin’[22]!” Jackie yelled and that made people stare at Chase and Henrik who was at a brisk walk was now suddenly racing over as fast as he could. Marvin followed suit.
“Average! Lay down now!” Henrik yelled, forcing the marksman to a halt.
While the chaos of trying to get medical care and everyone just tried to figure out what was going on, Techno took a look around as Phil seemed to regain his strength and stood up.
“You okay?” Techno looked around as Ranboo was starting to get frantic.
“Where’s Tubbo?” Ranboo asked, an acute sense of panic growing within him. He scooped Michael and Shroud into his arms.
“He was right next ta[5] me, did that fucker grab him?” Tommy yelled as he looked around, his eyes locking onto Quackity who was just staring at Ranboo. Or more importantly, at Michael and Shroud, who were both crying. The screams only made Tommy even more agitated.
“What do you mean he’s just gone!” Ranboo yeled.
“Okay, give ‘em[16] here,” Philza swept in and just scooped the two toddlers into his arms, his aura soothing them and they stopped crying.
Techno took out his axe and walked closer to the remaining bubble that hadn’t been consumed by the Actor’s. His other hand summoned something that looked like a fishing pole with a small hand-sized grappling hook on the end of it and reeled it back before aiming it at the bubble and dragging it closer to him.
“Hey, let’s think about this,” Quackity urged.
But Techno slammed his axe into the bubble the instant he could and it cracked before shattering. Antfrost, George, Skeppy, and Bad all dropped to the ground but Dream rolled into a kneeling position and looked around. He almost stabbed Techno but the warrior easily used his weapons to deflect the blow.
“Hey man, chill out for five seconds, okay?” Techno chuckled.
Dream got up and looked around. He helped pull George up to his feet.
“Thanks, Techno,” Dream told him.
“That clear the books?” Techno smiled.
“Fuck no,” Dream chuckled. “You did that on your own, I didn’t ask you to do anything.”
“Ehh, it was worth a shot,” Techno shrugged, a smile still on his face.
Skeppy looked up from where he’d been laying on the ground next to Bad and when he looked up at Ponk he surged up.
“Give it,” Skeppy took the tome from Ponk, and checked it over. His eyes began to glow blue as parts of his skin began to crystallize. Magic fluttered around him. “Thank you, Ponk.”
“I was doing my best,” Ponk told him, emphatically throwing their arms up. “Took you long enough.”
“I was a bit busy,” Skeppy shot back.
Chase, once Henrik deemed him impossibly still alive and despite the blood he wasn’t dying, he looked up at the final bubble. Illinois gave Eric a kiss before he walked over to Chase.
“Actor’s up there?” Illinois glared at it.
“Yeah,” Chase said. “Fooker’s[23] a demon so snappin’[24] his neck’s so isn’t a crime.”
“Not a punishable one, and he’d only come back to life in a week,” Illinois agreed.
“Hey, the two of you are not going alone,” Silver said, in the middle of orchestrating ways to get people home. Dream ordering most of the Server group back home. Silver and Jackie quickly agreed to go with Chase and Illinois.
Philza was staring at Shroud before smiling at him. “I’ll take these two back home.”
“Deal,” Ranboo said without thinking, racing over to Chase. “Is Bomble okay in there?”
“We don’t know, but we’ll get him back home, the Sides seem to be in there as well,” Silver told him.
“No, I’m coming with,” Ranboo insisted. “I can open up a portal right into the bubble.”
“Count me in too,” Tommy rushed over.
“Absolutely not,” Silver told him.
“Let me rephrase that,” Tommy told Silver in his usual loud volume. “I am goin’[25] in there. With or without yer[26] fuckin’[4] permission.”
Silver sighed in frustration. “You two don’t take chances, and if you see Bomble, you two need to bail immediately.”
“Deal,” Ranboo spoke over Tommy and his eyes turned purple as he opened up a portal right over the group and took them right into the bubble.

Egotober Day 1: Childhood Terror

Prompt: T-Shirt
Summary: The Manor is notoriously not a kid friend place, for the suits of armor, to the precious paintings, to the mountain of secrets hidden in the attic. But most parents figure that by their teens kids can be trusted not to accidentally hurt themselves. However, this is unfortunately not the case.
A/N: PSA! Do not fire t-shirt cannons directly at people! You will hurt them. The Author is just being dumb. A reminder that Kay (Kaylor) is King of the Squirrels.
Warnings: None. Just don’t play around with t-shirt cannons or aim them at people.
~::~ Six Years Ago ~::~
Kay and Illinois were playing chess at the Manor’s kitchen table, Kay currently had Illinois on the defensive, but except for the occasional click of the chess clock and the clack of chess pieces on a board so old it was made of legitimate ivory and the board was marble, the two young teens were quiet.
Arthur burst in and shouted, “Dodge this, fucker!”
Illinois didn’t even turn around before he dove for the floor, which left Kay unfortunately in the line of fire, and before he could look up he was hit square in the chest by something so hard it knocked him and his chair back and all he could see was white. The young teen was in so much pain that he couldn’t even scream . . . yet.
“Shit!” Illinois swore as he ran over to Kay who was on the ground. “Kay?”
Then he looked back at Arthur, who looked nervous. “What did you do?”
“I don’t know, is he dead?” Arthur asked as he came around the table, a t-shirt cannon in hand. “Help me hide the body, before the Old Man finds me.”
“Fuck off,” Illinois told him.
Kay let out a choked sob, before he started wailing in pain.
Almost at that same second, Dark was on top of them, his aura ripping the t-shirt cannon out of Arthur’s hands and angrily throwing it against the wall. The Entity shoved Illinois and Arthur out of his way and knelt over Kaylor who was limply clutching his chest.
“Can you breathe?” Dark demanded, looking Kay over with parental desperation.
The young teen’s answer was a pained scream, and Dark took that as a solid yes.
He used his aura to carefully scoop the teen up and glared at Arthur, “We’ll talk afterwards.”
Then the Entity rushed into a portal, heading to a doctor.
Arthur was standing in the kitchen with a look of pure fear on the young author’s face. “I’m so dead.”
“Yeah,” Illinois nodded in agreement. “What was that thing?”
“It shot t-shirts so I was going to shoot you in the head for being a shitheel,” Arthur admitted, as if that was a perfectly reasonable thing to do and say.
Illinois stared at him and remembered Kay’s screams, “You’re an absolute asshole.”
“I didn’t mean to hit him,” Arthur defended heatedly. “I meant to hit you. It’s not like it’s a gun.”
Illinois shoved the notebook out of his hands and kicked it across the kitchen. Arthur gasped in horror and hit Illinois in the face for his act of violence. The two teens began a violent fist fight.
Arthur threatened, trying to reach for his notebook, “Oh, I am going to make you choke on your own tongue when I get my pen back.”
Suddenly they were both pulled apart by Dark’s aura and pinned to the ground. Both of them were spitting and cursing in anger.
“I can’t leave any of you alone, can I?” Dark fumed in anger.
“He tried to kill me!” Illinois accused.
“He kicked my notebook!” Arthur screamed in a blind rage.
Dark rolled his eyes and sent both of them into a different portal, making sure Arthur and his writing powers were safely contained in a little pocket space so he could simmer and write out his anger without hurting someone. Illinois was shut up in his room for his part in the fight.
The Entity would later check the camera system he’d had set up around the house ages ago by Google. Only after he was sure Arthur would stay put and Kay was actually okay despite his four cracked ribs and furious anger at Arthur for being shot at. It had become a must as his children grew older and their personalities began to settle.
Illinois would be grounded for three days, which actually turned into just six hours, for punching Arthur and starting the fight. And Arthur would be grounded for a week, which only turned into a day, for the mess with the t-shirt cannon and threatening Illinois.
Dinner that night was awkward, Dark having to put up his aura as a protective barrier so Arthur and Illinois didn’t kick each other underneath the table as the three teens involved glared at each other in angry silence.
Kay was the first one to break the silence by flipping Arthur off while he was grabbing the juice pitcher, starting an argument in its wake.

Questions taken from this post! Sorry if there are any typos, this was super long and I’m tired lmao
1) Their age?

2) Their sexuality/sexual preference?
He struggled with it for a while, but now he’s openly pansexual. Anyone who’s nice to him for a while he’ll become attracted to 
3) Any siblings?
Phoenix has a little brother called Baxter! Baxter is 12 years old. They have a great sibling relationship; they trust each other and always look out for one another
4) Their favourite season?
Autumn/Winter. He hates being too hot and sweating, and he loves wearing sweaters cuz he’s insecure about his arms 
5) Who were/are their parents/guardians?
His parents were an artist and a musician, but they both died when he was 8-9 years old. His foster parents do not get along with him at all and they have arguments on the daily. Since joining the Lunar Bond, Phoenix lives with the other members and doesn’t visit them at all; he only sees his brother outside of the house
6) Their gender?
Cis male 
7) Their date of birth?
3rd September! (side note; I always do a drawing for his birthday, I’ll be sure to post it here this year!)
8) What clothing style?
He prioritises being comfy over everything else. He always wears a pair of ripped black skinny jeans and old, beaten up sneakers. He’ll often wear a long sleeved t-shirt or an oversized hoodie/sweater; the biggest one he owns goes down to his knees! He’ll also sometimes wear earrings (he has a cartilage piercing and both lobes pierced). He’ll never wear anything in public that shows off his arms or legs 
9) What is their favourite food after a break up?
No food. He doesn’t eat. He might drink some water if he gets a headache from thirst. And he’ll spend the rest of the time crying or sleeping. He’s melodramatic help him
10) Their favourite thing to do after a break up?
As mentioned earlier, crying and sleeping. Also listening to sad music. Help him please I’m begging
11) What happens in “the honeymoon phase” for this character?
He’s constantly buying gifts. And wants to see them every day. He becomes incredibly clingy and can sometimes get jealous. He’ll basically do anything for his S/O. He’ll turn up unannounced on their doorstep with flowers. Nobody in the Lunar Bond expects him to be like this at all, as his initial personality is so cold. However he is the most romantic person in the Lunar Bond by a long shot
12) How many serious relationships have they been in?
Three; one when he was 14-16, one from when he was 16-17 and one from recently to present day  👀 
13) What is their nationality?
The Lunar Bond universe is set in a world different from our own, so I’ll just write the equivalent nationality. He’s white British 
14) What languages do they speak?
He really wants to learn a language, however at the moment he only speaks English
15) What is their profession/education?
He’s currently a NEET. He dropped out of school due to anxiety and doesn’t have a job because he recently moved to the city and is too afraid to apply. In school, he did exceptionally well; he’s incredibly clever and always got straight A’s in all his classes. Perhaps when he comes out of his shell a little he’ll get a job doing something he loves
16) Their favourite comfort food?
Soup. Especially chicken noodle soup, as his mother used to make it for him. He’ll always have a bowl of soup if he’s feeling down
17) What is a food they hate?
Not a food, but he can’t stand coffee. He absolutely hates the bitter taste and can’t drink it because the caffeine makes him jittery
18) Their music taste?
Anything. His phone has all kinds of music, from contemporary pop to rock to classical to jazz. His father being a musician really helped him open his eyes to a broad range of music. The only kind of music he won’t listen to is screamo, as it’s too “noisy”. He has a preference towards calm songs as they help him feel relaxed, but he’ll listen to anything
19) Is there a story behind their name/meaning?
(For this question, I’ll write about the process of naming Phoenix!)
Originally, Phoenix’s name came from a name generator. I was struggling to find a name suitable for my main character that wasn’t too safe but also wasn’t too wacky and wild to the point where it wasn’t realistic, and it also had to suit the character. Once I saw the name Phoenix I just knew it fit him perfectly. At the start of the Lunar Bond story, he feels like he doesn’t suit his name; a Phoenix is fiery and always comes back after death and he feels that he is none of those things. However as the story progresses, Phoenix always rises back up after being knocked down. And as he opens up to his new friends, he becomes passionate and fiery about keeping them safe and close to him. He grows in the story to suit his name; he rises back up after every failure, and has the fire in his heart to protect those close to him 
20) Something they do that seems childish to others?
He frequently gets lost in make believe worlds in his head. These mostly come from books he’s been reading, as he loves adventure and fantasy books. He’ll zone out for 30-90 minutes and daydream about being a part of a fantasy world; some people around him think that it’s childish as he’s not grounded in reality
21) What is their all time favourite TV show? 
He doesn’t watch TV. At all. He didn’t really watch TV when he was younger either. He plays video games occasionally, but he mainly reads books or watches films
22) What is their all time favourite movie?
(I’ll write the real-world equivalent of Phoenix’s favourite films here!)
It changes depending on his mood. Hes indecisive and can’t choose a favourite. If he wants to relax, he likes animated films like Kiki’s Delivery Service. He also likes superhero movies like The Avengers. He also likes classics like The Shining. 
23) How big is their family?
Incredibly small. His only blood relative he has left is his brother Baxter. Both his parents were only children, so he doesn’t have any aunts, uncles or cousins. Both his sets of grandparents died when he was very young
24) Are they close to anyone specific in their family?
As his only remaining blood relative, Phoenix is very close to Baxter. They tell each other everything and not a day goes by where they don’t talk to each other, at least on the phone or through texts. For the majority of his life, Baxter saw Phoenix as more of a parent figure as oppose to a brother as Phoenix would always look after him. Baxter also doesn’t remember his parents so relies on Phoenix to tell him about them and what they were like
25) Have they got any allergies?
Not in terms of food, but his skin is incredibly sensitive. He can’t use products that are too scented or he’ll get a rash. He also can’t use aftershave for the same reason, so he’s stuck using the same soaps that he knows for a fact won’t irritate his skin
26) Are they an emotional person?
Yes. He’s incredibly emotional. However, he won’t let it show in front of other people. To people who don’t know him well, Phoenix is cold, stoic and sharp tongued, and pushes away those who try and get close to him. He’s terrified of getting hurt, so he doesn’t allow people near him. On the inside, Phoenix is lonely and begging for someone to support him. When he’s alone, he lets out all of his emotions. He’ll punch a pillow if he’s angry, he’ll cry himself to sleep if he’s sad, he’ll giggle like a schoolboy if he’s happy. There’s only one person who can see straight through him... 👀
27) Do they get angry/lose their temper quickly?
He doesn’t get angry easily, but he’s easily irritated. He will never yell at someone or start an argument unless they’ve really touched a nerve. He will never start a physical fight with someone either. His anxiety makes him easily irritable, so he might tell someone sternly to leave him alone but that’s about as far as it goes the majority of the time
28) What are some of their guilty pleasures?
Animated films, and when he was a kid he was secretly into musical films aimed predominately at young girls (e.g. High School Musical). He still knows all the words to the songs to this day
29) Do they have pets? Do they want pets?
Phoenix hasn’t had a pet since he had a hamster when he was 5. When he moves into his own house he’d absolutely love to have a cat. Or 2. Or 5. He loves cats! He can’t have one right now though because Chase is allergic 
30) Do they like kids? Do they want kids/have kids?
He doesn’t mind children. He doesn’t love them or hate them. He’s very good at looking after children/babysitting because he looked after Baxter for so long. However he doesn’t want his own children because he would worry about them all the time
31) Who’s cuddle buddy are they?

32) Do they have any tattoos?
No. He’s terrified of needles so he’s never getting a tattoo
33) Do they have any piercings?
Only the ear piercings I mentioned earlier!
34) What is their hair colour? Is this their natural colour?
Phoenix’s hair is a light-ish brown colour, which is his natural colour. Minami is desperate to dye his hair but he always says no
35) Do they like musicals?
Other than the teen musicals he watched in secret as a kid? Sure! He has to be in the right mood to watch a musical though. He only watches musicals that are made into films; he’d be way too intimidated to go and watch one on stage
36) Do they like marmite?
He tolerates it. He doesn’t love it or hate it. He’ll eat it if it’s there but he won’t go and buy a jar of it
37) Do they like glitter?
Not really. He thinks it’s too messy and he likes to keep stuff tidy. He’s let Minami put glitter on his face before though
38) Do they believe in the supernatural?
Phoenix is the kind of person to be totally sceptical of supernatural stuff, but then the minute something vaguely spooky happens he’ll freak out and run away
39) Have they ever seen a dead body?
Yes. Wont go into details because spoilers  🤐 🤐 🤐
40) Have they ever had a near death experience?
Being a member of the Lunar Bond is a constant near death experience 
41) Have they ever broken a bone?
Yes. As a kid he broke his leg while climbing a tree in the forest. The worst part was that because he was alone and didn’t have a phone, he was found 2 and a half hours later by his mother as she was wondering where he was
42) What are they like when they’re drunk/what kind of drunk are they?
An overly emotional drunk. All his feelings come spilling out everywhere and he’ll be crying or laughing hysterically or yelling. If he has an S/O he’ll become even more clingy than he is usually
43) Did they ever get drunk while underage?
Yes. He got drunk with his ex-boyfriend when he was 15. Nothing too bad happened; he just ended up spending 3 hours telling said ex-boyfriend how much he loves him. Technically in some countries he’s still underage (however the drinking age where he lives is 18 so it’s all good!) 
44) What is the first thing they do when they wake up?
He checks the time on his phone so he knows what day it is and what time it is, as he’s been known to spend a long time sleeping. He’ll then make himself some tea
45) Do they consider themselves to be popular?
Absolutely not. Phoenix spends a lot of time worrying that his new friends in the Lunar Bond don’t actually like him, and that they’re being nice because they feel like they have to be nice to their teammate. Among the members of the Lunar Bond, he’s actually fairly popular and thought of highly; but he’ll never believe them if they say that to his face
46) How do they like their tea/coffee?
Tea: Depends on the type. He’ll drink loose leaf teas slightly weaker as they have a stronger flavour, so brewing time is lessened. He drinks green tea fairly strong. Some teas such as vanilla rooibos he’ll drink black, but other teas such as Lady Grey he’ll add some milk. Some teas such as Lapsang Souchong he’ll drink weaker with a little sugar
Coffee: In the trash. Where it belongs. At least in his opinion
47) What do they smell like?
Lemon and tea tree body wash, as that’s the only one he likes that doesn’t irritate his skin. Also second hand books
48) Are they a virgin?
No, but don’t tell him I told you that
49) Do they wear glasses/contacts?
He needs reading glasses as he’s slightly long sighted, but it’s not so bad that he has to wear them all the time. He wears them fairly often as he’s nearly always reading, and he just forgets to take them off 
50) Are they good at remembering significant dates, such as birthdays or anniversaries?
Yes. He doesn’t even need to write them down. He remembers dates from weird things, such as when he got his new glasses or when he got his ears pierced. He never forgets a birthday or anniversary and always buys gifts far ahead of time

Welcome to the content guide for Retro & Classic games. It’s a rite of passage that you ponder how you able to play certain games at a young age or ponder the fact that you weren't allowed to play certain games. You’ve seen parents at stores like Walmart, Target & Best Buy complain to managers that the game they got for little jimmy or little jenny. You’ve seen Billy terrified after playing Psychonauts or had to cover Nat’s eyes during a rather grizzly fatality in Mortal Kombat.
Adding to the fact that TV spots & trailers for the game can be found online on sites like YouTube. They can be viewed by kids even when it’s geared toward an older audience.
To top it all of not all fantasy, games based on animated shows & movies, Space Operas, games based on cartoons, games based on anime, games where a talking animal is the main character, games where a child is the main character are not intended for kids.
When a parent or teacher picks a video game for there kids to play or  for the teacher their class to study they start by looking at the game’s ESRB rating. The rating are E, E10+, T, M and AO which are for All ages, Pre-Teens, Teens, Adults & Adults Only. In addition to that they also come with descriptions to explain why the game got the rating and it can be vague so picking the right game can essentially be a shot in the dark.
Pick the right game everyone has blast. Pick the wrong game however you show and/or teach them things they should’t know yet, scare them, make them cry, confuse them.
What’s age appropriate is different to what’s developmentally appropriate for someone. So here is it a better rating system and a coherent one.
The Ratings
PS - Pre-School (Ages 0-5 years old)
K - Kids (Ages 6-7 years old)
OK - Older Kids (Ages 8-9 years old)
10+ - Pre-Teens (Ages 10-12 years old)
13+ - Young Teens (Ages 13-14 years old)
15+ - Teens (Ages 15-16 years old)
17+ - Older Teens (Ages 17-20 years old)
21+ - Young Adults (Ages 21-24 years old)
25+ - Adults Only (Ages 25 & Older)
PS
If a game is rated PS it’s appropriate for Pre-Schoolers. PS Games language cannot go beyond polite conversation, sex is not allowed in any form, it may contain mild (mild slapstick) to no violence, drugs, alcohol & tobacco are not allowed in any form, intense & disturbing scenes are allowed as long as it isn’t too scary. Songs are allowed as it’s instrumental (no lyrics)
K
If a games is rated K it’s appropriate for Kids. Things allowed in this rating include low level realistic violence. Mild non-fatal (To sentient beings) slapstick, cartoon violence, fantasy violence. Mild swears are allowed like Hell, Damn & Ass. Sex is allowed as long as it’s a sexual innuendo. Drugs are allowed as long an item is used in place of an actual drug. Intense & disturbing scenes are allowed in mild doses. Blood and gore is NOT Allowed. As flames leaped from the roof of Notre Dame cathedral on April 15, those who knew its innermost secrets ventured into the pitch darkness of the smoke-filled nave. Their aim: to rescue some of the most valuable treasures in all of Christianity. “There was no electricity, there was a lot of water, there were alarms going off,” says Antoine-Marie Préaut, conservator of historic monuments in the Paris region, remembering the moment he entered the cathedral with Notre Dame’s operational director, Laurent Prades, and a group of firefighters. “The atmosphere was apocalyptic.”
Millions across the world watched aghast as fire shot from the medieval masterpiece in the heart of Paris. Less visible was how close Notre Dame came to total collapse, and how narrowly its treasures were saved.
About 400 firefighters battled the flames for more than nine hours—some climbing the staircase in its north tower, despite the danger of being trapped, to keep the cathedral’s set of 13-ton bells from falling and potentially bringing down the towers and the entire cathedral with them. The roof was already almost gone. “I found a situation that was completely catastrophic,” says Jérôme D., a firefighter who climbed to the top, and who cannot be named in full, per the rules of Paris’ fire brigade.
Préaut and Prades were so focused on rescuing the relics that they tuned out the chaos. Then they heard a giant noise as the spire crashed into the nave, collapsing the roof. Inside the cathedral, the fire now raged at ground level. “We felt utterly powerless,” Prades says. “But then everything happened very, very quickly. We lost all sense of time.”
Amid darkness and flames, the men fumbled to unlock a strongbox in a back chapel. Inside were Notre Dame’s most precious relics—including the Crown of Thorns that worshippers believe Christ wore to his Crucifixion, as well as pieces of wood and a nail believed to be from the True Cross. The two became part of a human chain, passing the priceless items to safety. “We told the firefighters, ‘Take everything you can carry,'” says Préaut, 38. “They were shouting at us, ‘Get out, get out!'”
Toward midnight, police finally escorted Préaut to city hall, where the relics were locked up for safekeeping. As their van crossed a bridge over the Seine, Préaut was stunned to see crowds jamming the entire area. “There were thousands and thousands of people just standing on the street silently, in shock,” he says. “I had the impression like it was the end of the world.”
Indeed, that night was the end of an era for a tight-knit group that had worked together for years at Notre Dame. As the months have gone by, the memory has weighed on Prades, 44, who has been at Notre Dame for more than 20 years. Préaut still has trouble sleeping. “There is a trauma from the event itself, from the hours that I spent in the cathedral,” Prades says. “There is also the trauma of knowing what might have happened.”
The two men are among a handful of people who have spent months working in trailers in the cathedral’s backyard, helping to prepare for the mammoth reconstruction ahead. The treasures and relics have been moved to a safe room within the Louvre Museum, and Notre Dame is wrapped in scaffolding and plastic. It will be shut perhaps until 2024, while its roof and spire are rebuilt. Until then, its ravaged state is a daily reminder of that terrifying night. “We would be happy to turn the page, to recover and go back to normal life,” Préaut says. When that time comes, the relics will go home, to their place of honor in a cathedral that, against the odds, still stands. —VW
A boy who helped change the law on school-lunch debt

Nine-year-old Ryan Kyote was eating breakfast at home in Napa, Calif., when he saw the news: an Indiana school had taken a 6-year-old’s meal when her lunch account didn’t have enough money. Kyote asked if that could happen to his friends. When his mom contacted the school district to find out, she learned that students at schools in their district had, all told, as much as $25,000 in lunch debt. Although the district says it never penalized students who owed, Kyote decided to use his saved allowance to pay off his grade’s debt, about $74—­becoming the face of a movement to end lunch-money debt. When California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill in October that banned “lunch shaming,” or giving worse food to students with debt, he thanked Kyote for his “empathy and his courage” in raising awareness of the issue. “Heroes,” Kyote points out, “come in all ages.” —M. A one-man crew amid the flood

It was supposed to rain for only a few hours. When then 21-year-old Lamar University student Satchel Smith got to his job at Homewood Suites in Beaumont, Texas, on Sept. 18, he planned to leave promptly when his eight-hour shift was done; he had class in the morning. But the rain didn’t stop. By nightfall, Tropical Depression Imelda had flooded the highway. No one could reach—or leave—the hotel, and Smith was the only employee there to tend to the hotel’s roughly 90 guests.
According to the Texas Tribune, Imelda dropped up to 43 in. of rain in parts of southeast Texas and caused flooding that killed five people. But inside the hotel, Smith didn’t panic. He answered the phone as it rang all night. In the morning, people started looking for breakfast. Despite not knowing how to cook, Smith raided the kitchen and made sure everyone got a hot meal. The storm set off the fire alarm; he ushered tired guests out and back into the building.
Angela Chandler, an educator from Nacogdoches, Texas, was one of those guests. She had come to Beaumont for a business trip and was already nervous about being away from home. But as she watched Smith, she suddenly felt grateful. “Satchel was in and out of the kitchen, answering the phone, taking care of guests with a smile on his face,” she says. “And I looked at him and realized, ‘That baby is only a year older than my son.'” She was floored by his composure, and shared her observation on social media.
As the day ticked on, it became clear Smith would also have to cook dinner. By then the guests had started pitching in. Helping him cook and clean, they made chicken and pasta. A few people walked food and water out to truckers stranded on the highway. Someone brought out playing cards.
“We all came together. They made sure I was all right; I made sure that they were all right,” Smith recalls. Finally, another employee was able to get through the water in a monster truck to relieve him.
He had worked over 30 hours straight, and stayed awake the entire time.
Chandler’s post about Smith’s steadfastness quickly went viral. While he says it’s nice to be recognized, Smith adds, “I kind of feel like I was just doing my job.” —M. Carlisle

As temperatures fell below 20°F on Nov. 11, Nicole Chamberlain, a bus driver in Waukesha, Wis., peered through her windshield and saw two children wandering alone outside, headed toward a busy intersection. “They were upset, frazzled,” says Chamberlain, 44, who pulled her bus over and called out to them. When the ­children—a 2-year-old girl and her 6-year-old ­brother—came bounding over, Chamberlain realized neither was wearing a coat and the girl had on only a T-shirt and a diaper. “It was mind-­blowing,” says Chamberlain, who was captured on the bus’s surveillance cameras wrapping her coat around the toddler’s bare legs. Chamberlain stayed with the children until police arrived, along with the children’s grandmother, who was babysitting when they darted out of the house. “It’s nice to have a feel-good story to share,” says Chamberlain. After a fellow driver tipped off a local news station to the story, strangers from all over the country agreed. “You saw something amiss and chose to step up to prevent a potential tragedy,” one wrote on her Facebook page. “I hope your example inspires others.” —M. A coach who embraced an armed student

When a distressed student appeared before him, armed with a shotgun, Keanon Lowe had no time to think. The football and track coach at Parkrose High School in Portland, Ore., lunged for the firearm, as students knocked over desks in panic. “It was a very surreal moment,” Lowe says, “all the kids screaming for their lives.” After a tug-of-war that seemed to last forever, Lowe, 27, wrestled the gun out of the student’s grasp. Then, in an unexpected move, he pulled the student in for a hug. “I didn’t see an evil kid,” Lowe says. “I saw a kid that was going through a lot.”
The student, identified by authorities as 19-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz, had been suicidal for several months, according to prosecutors, when he took the loaded and legally bought shotgun to school on May 17. Before Lowe intervened, the teen had already tried killing himself outside a bathroom, but the shotgun did not discharge. “What he needed was a shoulder to cry on and someone to hug him,” says Lowe, who has been coaching and serving as the school’s security guard for the past two years. “I don’t know the last time he got a hug.” While Granados-Diaz resisted the embrace at first and tried shoving Lowe away, the coach’s comforting words soon softened him. “I told him that I cared about him and that I was there for him and I was there to save him,” Lowe says. “He was surprised that I had said that. He said, ‘You do?’ and looked me right in my face. I said, ‘Yes, I do.’ He gave in to the hug, and that made a huge difference.”
Lowe and Granados-Diaz were strangers until then, but they held their embrace for at least 20 seconds, as Lowe passed the shotgun to another teacher. The moment, captured by a security camera, moved tens of thousands of people who saw it on social media. “No one would have batted an eye if he responded more aggressively,” says the school’s principal, Molly Ouche. “But he had compassion.”
For his bravery and kindness, Lowe was awarded a civilian medal of heroism from Portland’s police chief, and the city’s mayor declared May 29 to be “Coach Keanon Lowe Day of Recognition.” The accolades have been humbling and overwhelming, says Lowe, who played football at the University of Oregon. But he’s ready to move on, mostly so Granados-Diaz can do the same. On Oct. 10, Granados-Diaz pleaded guilty to having a loaded firearm in public and was sentenced to 36 months of formal probation, which includes mental-health treatment. According to prosecutors, his gun was loaded with only one round, meant for himself. It was evident that day that the student was “fighting demons,” Lowe says.
“This was just one moment in my life that’s not going to define me,” he adds. “And it’s not going to define Angel as well.” —M. Chan
A woman who kept dozens of dogs safe during Hurricane Dorian

Chella Phillips has lived in the Bahamas since 2004, and she knows what a storm can do. When Hurricane Dorian barreled toward her home, she got to work. Phillips has run Nassau’s Pawtcake Refuge, which cares for homeless dogs, out of her home since 2015. She had 82 dogs there already but searched out more. By the time Dorian arrived, she was hunkering down in her three-­bedroom house with 97 dogs, and she dashed off a quick Facebook post about the mayhem. Then she lost power. It was only after Phillips emerged that she learned her post had gone viral. Nassau was largely spared, but the storm devastated the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama, killing scores of people and leaving many with a sense of hopelessness. Her story had become a bit of positive news to hang onto, drawing thousands of messages from around the world. “I [said], ‘Why are people so impressed about this?’” she says. “Anybody who cares about these animals would have done that.” Still, she’s grateful for the extra attention on the dogs: in the week after Dorian, Phillips sent 68 to homes or rescue groups in the U.S. —M. You can still visit the old websites associated with that version of the comic. TEEN BOAT! won an Ignatz Award and now it is available in a full color version with extra comics and other bonus material.
The art of TEEN BOAT! is clean with easy-to-distinguish and consistent character designs. The girls aren’t overly sexified either. They look like teen girls and their designs are stylized the same as the guys. The art doesn’t stand out from the crowd, but it is definitely not hideous. And believe me, you’d be surprised how many comics and graphic novels get published with awful art.
TEEN BOAT! first came onto my radar when I read the AV Club review praising its light parody of Saturday morning cartoons. After reading it myself, I cannot come up with a better description than that. TEEN BOAT! is an updated, self-aware Saturday morning cartoon that invites the reader to laugh at the ridiculous premise and plots and enjoy the story anyway.
The protagonist of TEEN BOAT! is actually named TEEN BOAT! He’s a high school student who can turn into a boat at will, but must turn into a boat when wet. He gets in and out of trouble, dates an Italian gondola, and runs for class president. Like most teen guys, he’s pretty self-absorbed. One of the running gags is how he doesn’t notice that his best friend is both into him and has shape-changing abilities of her own.
Older teens will probably find TEEN BOAT! too short and silly. But hey, I’m an adult and thought it was cute. TEEN BOAT! is probably best for tweens, especially ones that still enjoy the cheesiness of Saturday morning cartoons. There is some underage drinking and gambling, but it the protagonist does not partake and the behavior is punished.Read moreComment| 4 people found this helpful. I actually requested this book to see what the team of Roman and Green were up to; and with a mind to finding out whether this might be the beginning of a series I could introduce to my 10 year-old son…
…BUT NO WAY, JOSE. I might let a ’d-mn’ slide but it’s not cool with this helicopter mom to have marijuana, drinking and smoking (cigarettes this time) mentioned like it’s no big deal. [Not to mention that ‘getting to second base’ would have to be explained.] Sooo, me in my-mom-hat will not be suggesting this book for Tweens.
Which leaves the question of who it would be good for. Here’s my opinion:
No - for adults. There was some funny stuff here, but not enough to make it worth the effort.
No - for Tweens. At least if you’re a mom like me. If your child is already rolling their own, they might enjoy it.
Yes - for guys 13-16 years, if they feel like a fun read that’s based on goofy humor.
Yes - possibly for girls 13 - 15 years if they like non-violent graphic novels. Romance is the focal point of the stories. And I particularly like the sections that dealt with where Teen Boat (that’s his name) fell in love with a gondola named Risatina.
Maybe - for guys older than 16, but honestly all of the things I thought were inappropriate for younger kids, is going to be too bland for mosts tastes at this age. I mean, no super cool artwork, and no ultra violence or women with extravagant 'attributes’...I’m divided on this one and not prepared to give it a definitive thumbs-down because there might be a guy out there that will be motivated to pick up more books if he starts on this one. However, that said TEEN BOAT is just got the wrong synergy going. On the one hand it’s childish but has inappropriate things for children, and one the other hand it’s not sophisticated enough for most Young Adults, which leaves it possibly right for that thin band in between: 13-15 year olds.

BUT NOT OPPOSED TO METAL DETECTORS – BARBADOS’ largest teachers’ union is not against using metal detectors at schools to help combat the violence. General secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT), Herbert Gittens, said that while detectors should not be the only measure put in place, he would definitely not rule them out. He was responding to comments made by Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw last Friday after the death of 16-year-old Temario Holder, who was stabbed to death at Frederick Smith Secondary School in Trents, St James. Holder became the 42nd murder for the year. (DN)
SJPI TO LAUNCH NEW DRIVE – The Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) is looking to embark on non-traditional avenues for training and development, as part of Government’s desire to transform the country. It will soon be offering courses in drone manufacturing, 3D printing and electric hybrid vehicle maintenance. The announcement was made by Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training Santia Bradshaw, during the SJPI’s graduation ceremony at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, St Michael, on Saturday night. SECTION OF HIGHWAY ONE REOPENS – The section of road along Highway 1 between Porter’s Road and Coral Reef, St James, will reopen from Monday. Word of this has come from Project Manager in the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification’s Project Management Co-ordination Unit, Ricardo Marshall. As part of the Adaptation Measures to Counter the Effects of Climate Change Project, the road was closed to allow for the installation of flood alleviation structures, such as culverts and channels. The aim of the project is to improve drainage and alleviate flooding in certain areas in St James. Meanwhile, the public is also asked to note that Trents Tenantry Road will be closed from Tuesday to facilitate necessary works under the project. This closure is estimated to last approximately three weeks, weather permitting. Local access to Trents Tenantry Road will be from the south. (BGIS)

To the delight of a partisan home crowd on the windy East Coast, Burke – watched by his dad, Alan, the 1994 winner – pulled out all the stops to beat the dazzling 21-year-old American defending champion Chauncey Robinson in a riveting final at the Soup Bowl. Burke announced himself in the final with a big carve – a carve is a full rail move that is done on the open face of a wave, it is all about smooth lines, speed and power – waited for the close-out, hit it hard and then rolled it to the inside. It provided him with a wave score of 8.10 and put the pressure on Robinson, who responded with a wave score of 8.00. (DN)
PERSAUD HURTS PRIDE – Rookie Akshaya Persaud’s maiden half-century stunned Barbados Pride and gave reigning champions CCC Marooners their first win of the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 on Saturday night. Chasing a modest 173 for victory in a day/night Group “A” fixture at Warner Park, Marooners appeared headed for defeat at 82 for five in the 26th over before the left-handed Persaud produced a composed, unbeaten 51 to see them to a come-from-behind four-wicket victory. Sadique Henry struck a breezy 30 while Akeem Jordan chipped in with a crucial 29, in a 58-run sixth wicket stand with Persaud, which change the game’s complexion entirely. (DN)
FOGGING SCHEDULE NOVEMBER 11-15TH - The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ fogging programme continues next week in a number of parishes. On Monday, the districts in St Philip to be fogged are Merricks Tenantry Road, Peat Bay Road, Apple Hall, Apple Hall Terrace, Bottom Bay, Inchcape Terrace with Avenues, Harrismith, Shrewsbury, Harmony Hall, Eastbourne and environs. The team will be in St James on Tuesday, spraying Husbands Gap, Storehouse Gap, Patanne Gardens, Glitter Bay Terrace, Porters, West Terrace Gardens with Avenues, Oxnards, Violet Circle, Cherry Drive, West Terrace Heights and surrounding areas. On Wednesday, the areas to be fogged in Christ Church are Barrack Hill, Vauxhall, Vauxhall Gardens, Vauxhall Tenantry Road, Poinsettia Avenue, Primrose Avenue, Casuarina Avenue, Hibiscus Avenue, Warners Terrace, Briar Hall and neighbouring districts. On Thursday, the team returns to Christ Church to fog Atlantic Shores, Coral Drive, Pearl Drive, Spring Terrace, Lighthouse Lane, Oyster Crescent, Seaside Drive, Ocean Mist Close and environs. The team will return to St Michael on Friday to fog Newton Crescent, North Wildey Terrace with Avenues, East Terrace with Avenues, Wildey Gardens and surrounding areas. Fogging takes place between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day. Householders are reminded to open their doors and windows to allow the spray to enter. (BGIS)
FREDERIDK SMITH STUDENTS SHINE AT NIFCA – Sophi-Ann Ramsay, 16, Tamayra Norville, 16, Selena Leacock, 17, Ayanna Goodman, 15, Brineshua Brewster, 17 and Cameron Edwards, 17 did credit to their school as they all delivered thrilling performances before a packed Combermere School hall. MC for the night Darren Watson called the name of the school so frequently throughout the programme that, one patron was even heard saying: “Wow another one from Frederick Smith Secondary…They must have a really good music programme.” Sophi-Ann performed in both the first and second half singing Broken and Cast Away and Redemption Song respectively. She was great. Tamayra did a soulful rendition of My Redeemer Lives and then returned to the stage for a duet with Selena. They did Philip 7’s Beautiful Surprise. Brineshua did a convincing version of Hallelujah with Cameron accompanying her on keyboards.  The most delightful and entertaining performance came from the youngest in the group violinist Ayanna. She did A Bajan Medley which included popular folk songs. The talented teen serenaded the crowd with her instrument and danced in between songs. Frederick Smith has been taking part in the national festival for well over five years. Singers such as past students Cherese Richards and Theres Lambert, who are both recipients of NIFCA awards, had become fixtures of the annual NIFCA Gala which showcases the best if the festival. The recently crowned Richard Stoute Teen Talent winner Diandrea Harris is also a former student. It is because of these and other successes that the school boasts one of the better musical programmes. Head of the Fine Arts Department Jarvis Marshall along with music teachers Mark and Andre Forde were there to give guidance and to witness the end result of long hours and days of hard work. The teachers told Barbados TODAY that the students normally practise during school hours and sometimes after school where needed. They praised the students for putting in the hard work and for being part of the school’s successful music programme. The school, which has copped multiple music awards also performs at Ministry of Education Lunchtime Concert, Schools Music Festival, Mango Bay Hotel, Agrofest, Massy events and pageants. (BT)
