When I was at school, the thing was that Geography was a dull subject but that the teachers were nice. I still don't get the implication that having an ordinary name is a bad thing, though; half the Doctor's companions have had very ordinary names.

Well yes. The Father of the House at the time Moffat started was Alan Williams. Nothing wrong with an ordinary name.
