Log #1 "Okay So- I got myself into this mess" Loading....
Some friends gave me their thoughts on the series after I asked around and their answers made me think.
AreOri is an alternate timeline where Fubuki Atsuya lives, the alien attack didn't happen, Gouenji didn't have to run, Raimon got divorced and went separate ways, and teams have sponsors now because capitalism. (im joking on some parts but still)
Now, we're starting where everything is dead and done and Raimon already went to other schools and made a name for themselves, and we're following a new cast who have to deal with the aftermath of everything. And the new villain, children perfectionism/ half-joke. I haven't finished Ares yet, but I can feel like that's a part of the theme especially with the whole schtick the Balance of Ares program's got going on. But that's a different story for a different time.
What I'm gonna be talking about now is the characters.
Of course that characters we loved and knew from the OG series are gonna be different here. (im still confused about someoka ngl) The development they went through in the OG is gonna be pretty different here or probably non-existent. A huge part of Fubuki's arc was caused by his family's death and it all avalanched into mental instability. (if my memory's right, it's been a while since i've revisted the OG series) Kazemaru also probably didn't leave Raimon in the AreOri timeline, so guess what, he just teams up with the antagonist in his character arc in every timeline. It actually reveals an interesting about his character, tho (i HAVE to watch the entirety of OG, im feeling it)
But the thing is, we also have ANOTHER cast to develop along with explaining some of the changes with the first cast. I feel like there's going to be a lot of flashback moments with the old cast. And to make up for the lack of development of some characters, I'm gonna involve the new cast into their development so the spotlight gets shared equally if it comes to it. Cause the new cast needs some love AND development. But I still have to finish the series and study them more.
So, my thoughts so far on Ares:
Rushed. Jesus H. Christ, twas rushed. It gives the feeling of tuning in while missing out on parts of the story, atleast for me. The first episode made me feel like I was missing the first half of it. I wished they let us see what the kids' life on the island was like. You know to SHOW US WHY WE SHOULD CARE FOR IT. Shoving a bunch of kids crying for their parents on screen aint gonna cut it for everyone, my good men. Show us what their life was like, what they were gonna miss. At least like a part so the flashbacks in their training felt a bit foreshadowed and connects to what we saw to the first ep to make it a little more memorable. (i am losing brain power fast, so im not sure if this makes any good sense)
The thing with Ares, Akane, and Nosaka got me curious. The Inakuni has potential. Haizuki's funny. I kind of like his development. Also I love Endou's civilian fit when he made his first appearance. Idk i just fell in love with it. (give him back his melanin pls) Kozoumaru's interesting, especially his connection with Gouenji (dude helps out a kid in every timeline). Hiura's supposed to be like a detective, right? Let him be more detective-y. Goujin's funny. He has a little charm to him. Mansaku and Michinari are interesting, especially their family dynamics. I love Iwato and Hattori's relationship. They're cute. Who is Okuiri Hiro? I love Norika's personality (it's a personal favorite thing). I think her backstory and home life are interesting. Hiyori's cute and I like him. He's silly. Coach Zhao is Coach Zhao. (this man is a war criminal) I like the new managers. She's silly and Anna's nice.
I'm gonna save Asuto (Bug Boy) for another post.
Peace Out!

Hello! I hope your week has been kind to you. May I inquire of your thoughts about IDW Eggman written by Ian Flynn? I noticed his reference in one of your posts, and i would like to know how you feel about the direction Ian is taking the Sonic characters in in the Sonic franchise. I would also like to know what you think about Surge and Kit, the product of Dr. Starline's unethical experimentations. Mimic, the traitorous mercenary as well if you don't mind. Remind yourself to eat your meals regularly and to maintain a limber body!
I admittedly haven't gotten to sink my teeth in IDW- I'm currently following through @thankskenpenders' take on archie which I would like to finish before I start that. What I have seen is promising, but I don't consider myself educated to speak on those characters. I think Surge, Kit, and Mimic have very fun designs and seem to have a lot of potential, and I love the way the former two (and Starline himself) are nods to classic glitches.
As far as IDW Eggman, as I've said, I'm very interested in what Flynn and Stanley do with him! They're definitely a bit darker than I've always liked my take on Eggman- my formative Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2, which featured Eggman as a protagonist in his own right, albeit a "dark" one. I've always liked the idea of him as half-honorable, and it's a balancing act to frame that with just how brutal and ruthless he can be. But I've grown to be fond of that- I think half-honorability stands out a little more when the other half is that... coldly efficient.
As I said in the post, I think it's interesting to take Eggman as someone who may have had noble intentions as a 'fixer' once but who's gone a good few strides further than that. In a warped way, he always 'helps'- but you may not appreciate his help. I think that plays well with him as a manipulator and a trickster who tends to play people against each other for his own profit and amusement- if he's always harmless or always terrifying that's a potentially fine character (there's much I like about SatAM Robotnik after all!) but it doesn't really hit me as Eggman in the same way.
Almost everything I've gleaned secondhand about the Mr. Tinker arc is fascinating to me because of that. Especially the way Sonic confronts Eggman afterwards, and makes it clear he isn't opposed to Eggman regaining his memory (Sonic is not someone who likes to take power or options away from even his worst enemies) but upset that Eggman threw away everything he had as Mr. Tinker, to which Eggman replies, almost wistfully, that that kind of life was "peaceful"- but he's got bigger fish to fry.
As I said in a previous post, at the end of the day, Eggman's meant a lot of things to a lot of people, and while I'll always have my own takes on the Sonic cast, the biggest thing I can hope for is that new versions of the story will experiment further. That willingness to try new things boldly is, in my opinion, one of the things that's kept the Sonic franchise as youthfully full of vitality as it is. I can't really find it in my heart to hate any version of Eggman- they've all got something going for them, from the silly to the horrifying to the aforementioned half-honorable to the completely vile.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I absolutely adore your blog and think you're really cool! I love seeing your book log updated all the time (!!! I'm so impressed with how much you've read HOW) and following you on goodreads is amazing I just love seeing your book reviews and stuff anyways yeah ily <3
oh my gosh hi!! this is so so sweet and means the world to me, truly 🥺🥺 i hope you're having a wonderful day! 🤍
i'd love to hear more about your taste in books if you'd feel comfortable sharing!! i always want to know what people are reading, what they're loving at the moment (what they're hating), what their favorite books are <3
i also wanted to emphasize that it's more so quality over quantity of books, and that reading isn't a competition! sometimes i see how much other people are reading, and i'm like "oh wow!" and i feel behind, but then i remember that any number of pages/books read is still amazing — especially given the periods of my life (particularly, when i was in grad school) where i didn't get to read a whole lot. i haven't been reading as much this year as i have in comparison to last year or the year before, but a lot of how much i read can be chalked up to a combination of the following factors: i have a very poor sleeping schedule/i have sleeping problems, i have some health issues, i've always been a pretty fast reader, and i try to have a couple books on the go — including audiobooks! i take a book with me everywhere (i read on my phone sometimes) too, which i think helps — if i'm on the bus, i'm probably reading or listening to an audiobook! juggling a couple books has allowed me to read more books too, because i don't get caught up in "i have to finish this book before i can move onto another one", and i can switch genres/books based on how i'm feeling. that being said, there have definitely been days where i have to block out my evening and tell myself "i have to finish this book tonight" — but that's mostly so i can write a review for my book blog! i think my relationship with reading also changed significantly once i started posting on my book blog + on bookstagram more, because sometimes i read less for my own personal enjoyment, and more so for a need to be informed with what's currently popular, what ARCs i've been given/committed to reading and/or reviewing, and it's taken about two years for me to figure out a more healthy balance between reading for fun, vs. reading as a content creator.
i hope you're having the loveliest day, angel! xx

Macross 7 Review
another slightly re-edited review because it was split between multiple months
EPISODES 1-35 REVIEW:
it is now January 30th 7:29 pm est and i have watched about 3/4 of all episodes and i watched them all this month so i think it's fair to put this on here. i can't go as in depth on it because i haven't finished it but what i can say its that it is very cute pretty much the only complaints i have is there isn't enough Sivil and i think planet dance is overused. all the songs i've heard so far are pretty good, and that includes planet dance, but at the same time it is my least favorite and sometimes it feels like they play at least half the song 3 times in the same episode so it kind of wears out it's welcome. my favorite song is probably holy lonely night that one just goes so hard. all the characters are pretty good, they were smart to cast Koyasu as Gamlin because i would probably fucking hate him if he was voiced by someone else. his ass needs to get a job and stop hanging out with a 14 year old. Basara has an excuse because he doesn't gaf and is too busy going Sigurd Mode because mysterious forest pussy has him acting unwise. Basara is a cool protag hes like a cool guy. for the most part every time the show is getting old or whatever it pretty quickly get interesting again (right before Sivil shows up the formula/currently plot arc was in danger of losing me a little bit but they pulled me back in). i would liken it to like to like how a lot of kamen rider shows feel in like the w ooo fourze and wizard era where sometimes the least important shit of all time is going on for like three episodes straight but they're usually pretty good episodes and then they lock back in for an episode or two and the cycle will repeat. kind of the same thing here. i know SDF Macross was like a full series or whatever but i think that this definitely trying to maintain the balance of being a full 49 episode series with balancing having a music scene and a mecha scene in every single episode. and its not like there ever an episode where something is completely irrelevant or is just kind of going through the motions at the very least there's always like a good heartfelt moment or something in every episode so its like i'm realizing i'm losing the plot here a little but my feelings so far on Macross 7 from a larger level like plot and pacing and shit is the plot is good too me i think it's fine if you watched any other Macross before this and then came into this one confused there were more aliens then idk what to tell you what did you expect. i do understand though that the pacing is something some people might have a problem with. if i had to explain it this is a show that didn't "need" to be 49 episodes but also it doesn't "need" to be shorter. you might feel it drags a bit, but you (probably) aren't going to feel like its wasting your time. hopefully we get Sivil out of that fucking ball soon!
