Being Alone, Apparently, and Cats: LIFE IS JUST BETTER WITH. RILO ID 71001, 3 YRS., 45 LBs. BROOKLYN ACC TO BE KILLED – 8/13/2019 He’s got the biggest smile, the happiest heart, and boy does he love to show off his “sit” and “down” skills for yummy treats. RILO is the most adorable thing on four paws, and a total sweetheart to boot. With his four white socks, his lightbulb tail, and his one up/one down ear set, he has all of us smitten with his sweetness and charm. When you watch his video it’s hard to believe that this wonderful boy was all alone in the world, wandering around someone’s back yard. We will never know how he got there, but life has been about rolling with the punches for Rilo. Someone took him in for a week, and during his stay he was a model guest even though the person left him outside in the yard for the most part, alone and having to find things to amuse himself. We can’t imagine how lonely Rilo has been till now, or how hard he has had to cope to just keep his optimism. It’s understandable that this wonderful, gentle hearted boy is initially shy with new people, having never had the stability of a committed family, but once you have won his heart, it’s yours forever. Don’t overlook this amazing dog. RILO is a gem, eager to please, a master of basic commands, playful and full of fun (his favorite game is tug!) and yes --- let’s just say it again – ADORABLE! Please hurry and Message our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance fostering or adopting him. MY MOVIE! 10 Myths About Border Collies
Myth 1: I have small children, so I want a puppy. Without a doubt, this is the most common reason people want a puppy. A sweet, small puppy just seems like the best choice for sweet, small children. You know that cute Kodak commercial with the puppies climbing all over the giggling little boy? Have you ever noticed how short it is? That’s because they could only film for a few seconds before the welts rose, the blood dripped, and the boy began to scream for his mother. Puppies have needle-teeth that they happily sink into anyone who walks by. They also have sharp nails that scratch when they jump up -- and on little Ryan, those front feet land right around his face. Puppies leave “presents” that your toddler always seems to find before you do. Puppies wake your children during the night. And a puppy doesn’t know the difference between his stuffed toy and Sarah’s Piglet that she MUST have to fall asleep. And suppose you get a puppy when little Morgan is 2. In six months, Morgan will be about 1 inch taller and 3 pounds heavier. However, the 8-month-old puppy will now be as tall as Morgan and outweigh her by 20 pounds. And those baby teeth will have been replaced by big snappers that need to chew. Of course, puppies and small children do successfully co-habitate. But, in our experience, your child will go through far less Neosporin and Band-Aids with a calmer 2 + year old dog who is road-tested with children. Myth 2: It’s better to get a puppy. With an older dog, you never know what you’re getting. Seems to make sense, except the exact opposite is true. All puppies are cute; all puppies love everyone. It’s not until a dog hits sexual maturity that some innate behavioral problems start to surface. We can’t even estimate how many calls we’ve had from people who paid thousands of dollars for a purebred puppy, who is now a year or two old and biting people, attacking other dogs, or engaging in some oddball neurotic behavior. Purebred is not the same as well bred, and sometimes it feels like the disreputable breeders grossly outnumber the responsible ones. The truth is this: when we list a 4-month-old puppy, we can only guess what kind of adult she’ll make. When we list an 18-month-old dog, we can predict pretty accurately what kind of dog you’ll have forever. Myth 3: If you train your dog right, he’ll stay in the yard without a fence. Many people believe this, right up until the moment the dog is hit by a car, eats poison in the neighbor’s garage, or is stolen. We insist on a fence or leash walks. Rescue dogs are typically either strays (which means they have a history of wandering) or owner-surrenders (which means they’re going to go look for their ex-owner first chance they get). We just can’t risk it. Myth 4: When I was growing up, we had a PERFECT Border Collie. No, you didn’t. Trust me, he was only perfect because you were 8 and didn’t have to clean up after him and be responsible for him. I know you believed he was perfect, but you also believed in Santa and honest government then, too. I had a perfect BC named Max when I was growing up. He died in my freshman year of college, and has since, in family lore, gone on to be canonized. St. Max. Bow your head when you say it. Everyone in my family seems to forget the time St. Max was hit by a car he was chasing. Or the time he bit the kid biking by. Or how he used to sneak in and sleep on the furniture when no one was home. Or the time he had diarrhea all over the hardwood floors. Or how he used to eat the Christmas ornaments off the bottom half of the tree. Since I’ve been an adult, I’ve never had a perfect Border Collie--but every single one of them was perfect for me. Myth 5: Border Collies stop being puppies around a year old. BUUUUZZZZZ! I’m sorry. Try 2 or 3 for most. Many Border Collies don’t calm down and hit their stride until they’re 4 or 5. Myth 6: I want a dog without dominance issues, so I want a female. In the wacky world of Border collies, that’s just not true. For starts, it’s impossible to make gender-based absolutes. But once you spend time around Border Collies, you’ll start to notice there are plenty of hyper, dominant females out there. You’ll also notice lots of mellow, roll-with-the-punches males (especially after they make that all-important trip to Dr. Knife). It all depends on the individual dog, but don’t think for a minute that a female is a sure ticket to a passive, submissive pooch. Myth 7: My 8 month old Border Collie is biting people. He’s not lunging or growling, but he makes little nips on arms and legs. I can’t keep an aggressive dog. The secret here is to look at what the dog has been bred to do. Border Collies herd. It’s what they do. And chances are, that’s all he’s doing to your friends and family. This is called mouthing. It’s what happens when those cute little puppy bites go uncorrected. And if your dog’s doing it, he will continue to do it--and do it harder and stronger--until you DO correct it. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to fix in most dogs. There’re lots of tips on the internet (just search for “dog mouthing”) and your vet can probably help as well. If the problem is really out of hand, you may need to call in a trainer for a few sessions. Myth 8: I’m unsure about getting a rescue dog, because I’m afraid he won’t bond to me. That sound you hear is all the people with rescued dogs falling over laughing. Because the exact opposite is nearly always true--your rescue dog will CLING to you. Look at it from the dog’s perspective. She’s spent the bulk of the last year on a 6-foot chain in someone’s back yard because she committed the unconscionable sin of no longer being a puppy. At some point during the day, someone may remember to bring her food and water. The only attention she gets is when they yell at her for barking. Finally, they take her for a car-ride--dumping her in a wooded area where she can have a “fighting chance.” Despite everything, she waits there for their return or tries to get back home. She finds water somewhere. She raids trashcans and gets sick. If she’s extremely lucky, she survives long enough for an animal lover to find her and bring her to the shelter. Then she sits in the loud, scary shelter run, starting to lose faith that her family will ever find her. The kennel people are nice, but she is one of a hundred needy dogs they have to care for. Finally, the shelter calls us. And you take her home. You not only bring her into your house, you give her her own bed and bowl, and a crate where she feels safe. You speak quietly. When she messes on the carpet, you don’t seem to mind--you just take her outside and then clean it up. You feed her regularly AND give her toys and treats and Nylabones. She sleeps in your room. She may even have a big brother or sister to play with. She gets kisses. And when she goes out in the car, she always comes back.
Your rescue dog’s biggest fear is that you will spontaneously combust.
She’s not going to let you out of her sight for one minute. People with rescue dogs learn to function with a 70 pound shadow following us everywhere. That said, there are some dogs who just never learned to connect with people, but that becomes apparent very quickly--long before we place him with you. Myth 9: Border Collies are so smart they practically train themselves. Wrong. Think about it- the dog is smart, so he learns to figure things out. He may housetrain easily, learn basic obedience easily, but what else can he learn? My BC has learned to open doors, steal laundry, and climb a tree. He’s also learned that he can entertain himself by digging or barking. What makes him stop digging or barking? Learning something new and getting a lot of exercise- every day. Not once a week, every day. BCs are like that super-smart nerdy kid in Chemistry class- he successfully completes the class experiment, and then blows up the lab because he wants to see how the chemicals interact. Super smart kids make super big messes. Myth 10: I don't want to have my dog spayed or neutered because it's not natural/ she should be able to have a litter/I want my children to see the miracle of birth/etc. If everyone prevented irresponsible breeding, we'd be happily out of business. Do not humanize your dog--no one's asking you to neuter yourself. Your dog will be healthier and more comfortable once s/he's shifted into neutral--and will also be a much more pleasant companion. Neutered male dogs roam less, mark less territory, and are generally less aggressive. Spayed female dogs avoid the messy and annoying heat cycles, and are not at risk for unwanted pregnancy. And both males and females are less likely to get certain illnesses. As for the miracle of birth, well, there's another rite of passage occurring to 20 million dogs a year in this country, 25% of them purebred. It happens every day at your local animal shelter. But most parents are not as eager for their children to see that.

lila is 3 or 4 we don’t know her age she is the only dog that i have not raised from a puppy she came from my mom’s friend they were moving and couldn’t take her she lived in a outdoor kennel until we got her we don’t know what breed she is a poodle mix? she is my favorite it feels like she is my first dog all over again i love her so much?? she loves walks she loves it when i give her attention she gets very jealous she is the only one that does not sleep with me she prefers the couch or her dog bed she cries to get me up in the morning for what i don’t know she never has to go out she just likes to see me even though she sleeps right by me she had heartworms but she’s all good now!! she loves all fruits and veggies she hates all people besides my sisters and she doesn’t warm up to people she doesn’t like to touch by anyone else besides us

having six dogs is hard getting them all their shots their monthly flea/heartworm medication taking them yearly to make sure everything is okay buying dog food costs a bit too finding a good brand in a 25+lb bag without breaking the bank is hard hearing them bark over any little movement they see outside but to me it’s worth it you know ? i struggled with depression since i was 12/13? they help me get up in the morning they keep me alive so i love them they love me like nothing else i am their person i just dread the day they leave me

Being Alone, Anaconda, and Andrew Bogut: Hi, my name is Mueller # 21000- 2-4 yrs old Gorgeous face, affectionate snuggle bug, awesome harness walker, loves dogs, bouncy & layful, full of love and kisses, eautiful brindle…thats me V My hearもis yours Manhattan ACC needs a second chance **** TO BE KILLED – 2/26/2018 **** AWESOME SNUGGLER AND SIMPLY GORGEOUS <3 A volunteer writes: Part playful puppy, part affectionate snugglebug, and 100 percent handsome hunk, Mr. Mueller is a brindle lover's dream come true! You'll always find him waiting right at the front of his den, tail wagging mightily and front paws propped on the door, a welcoming smile lighting up his gorgeous face like spring sunshine. He pulls enthusiastically for the street, but walks well in a harness, meeting other dogs with happy enthusiasm and taking care of all his business along the way before turning the charm on full blast once we stop for our photo shoot. At first, Mueller sits politely to gently mouth reward treats from my hand, but once I give him the 'hug signal' of patting my chest, he's all over me in the best way, cuddling, kissing and loving as only an enthusiastic big boy can. We stay like that for a bit, his paws resting almost on my shoulders as I pet him, and he watches the world go by and then he's off again, snuffly nose to the ground and happy tail reaching for the sky. Mueller aced his behavior assessment with top scores, but his size and jumpy playfulness mean he'd fit best in a home with no little people underfoot, and pet parents who'll make sure he sticks to his best manners–and is rewarded accordingly, of course! I adore Mueller and you will, too. Ask to meet him at our Manhattan Care Center and come prepared to cuddle! Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft 'popping' of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Paw squeeze 1: 2. Flank squeeze 1: Item not conducted Flank squeeze 2: Item not conducted Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away. Summary: Mueller quickly approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body and jumped up in a social manner. During the assessment, he jumped up a lot and was very mouthy, applying moderate pressure. He was social throughout the assessment and allowed all handling. Summary (1): 2/18: When introduced off leash to the female helper dog, Mueller engages in running play. Summary (2): 2/19: When meeting a familiar female dog, Mueller greets, wanders, then becomes anxious seeking exit. When he sees a female dog in the neighboring pen, he repeatedly snaps at her direction. Date of intake: 17-Feb-2018 Summary: Mueller was social and allowed handling. Date of initial: 18-Feb-2018 Summary: Mueller was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mueller so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: ADULT ONLY HOME Recommendations: No children (under 13) Recommendations comments: No children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Potential challenges comments: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Mueller was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Mueller puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. Anaconda, Apple, and Bones: Channeling the Easter Bunny with her adorable ear set, she's a super sweet, chunky, lowrider dreaming of a family of her own! DARLING DESTINE יי Id 55076 2 Yrs.. Spayed and Wating for Cuddles & Hugs, Manhattan ACC TO BE KILLED - 2/26/2019 She’s so full of life. DESTINE is an adorable chunky lowrider with the biggest, brightest smile at the Manhattan Center. She simply adores people, and with those ears!!! It’s like she is channeling the Easter Bunny. We adore her rotund little body, her happy go lucky spirit and her never ending charm. Affectionate, cuddly, and oh so sweet, this wonderful youngster is waiting to light up someone’s life for the rest of hers. Don’t wait, hurry and foster or adopt her now. She’s spayed and ready to go! PM our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance. A volunteer writes: "Is that my new family I see?" No, wait Destine; I usually do this differently. Like this: Destine is seal brown, apple-headed, full figured gal in search of a food plan, and a new life. We met at Manhattan's ACC on a bright winter afternoon. I am a complete sucker for apple headed dogs, so not too much batting her eyes at me was needed to sell me on taking her out. "Are you sure?" Yes, Destine. Let me tell everyone how we passed our time. "Okay..." We went out into the pen, and Destine made a preliminary search of the perimeter but is quite happy to sit right there, velcroed to your legs (um, too hefty for the bench), and happily, on a chilly day, be a foot warmer, using my size nines as a couch. Watching the birds, volunteers and staff was just fine for her. Destine appreciated the "go slow" hang out, to sit, and think, and be. "Because, I think I see someone!" That's the idea, love. The pretty pooch has a great smile and cute ears and she wants to be your BFF @ MACC. A Royally Adorable <3 PRINCESS is a pretty little girl with a cream white coat. Watching her play with her pink stuffy is simply adorable. Returned after only 6 months we hope, next time little Princess will find her happily ever after. Please share 'her royal highness' for a loving home. A volunteer notes (April 2018) I first met Princess in September and these photos are from then. She looks exactly the same and though slightly less cheery her temperament is similar too. She is SO petite and pretty and wiggly in her kennel. I hope second time's the charm for her. A volunteer writes (Sep 2017): Day 3: "Dear Diary, Today was the very best day. I ran and I jumped and I played! I made so many new friends and I ate so many delicious wonderful snacks. Today was the very best day." Who ever said you needed Anne Hathaway or Julie Andrews to enjoy the Princess Diaries? Our 4 year-old Princess is obviously royalty in her buttercream coat tailor made for a queen-to-be. And from her love of toys (pink stuffies to be specific) it's plain as day that this special beauty is long used to the finer things in life. Princess comes to us as a stray, so unfortunately much of her former life is unknown. We know she has a smile bright enough to turn darkness into light and a delightful, happy spirit more bubbly than a can of Sprite. She walks nicely on leash, takes her treats gently, and sets her windshield wiper of a tail to work at simply the sight of a toy (or of you!) Day unknown: "Dear Diary, Today was truly the very best day, my happiest day, the best day I have ever known. Today is the day that I found my new family. Today is the day I went home." She was kept indoors and at night she slept on her dog bed or in the babies crib. She ate both wet and dry Wellness. She is house trained and in the past 8 months had 1 accident. She is well behaved when left alone indoors. She knows the cues sit, come, down, stop, give me, entra (go inside) and let go. She was walked 2-3 times a day and went to dog parks. She pulls hard on leash and off leash she wanders but comes when called. BEHAVIOR NOTES: Intake: Princess had a relaxed body and wagging tail. She allowed me to pet and collar her. She put her ears back as I took pictures and when I was done she gave kisses. She sat on cue. When putting her in her kennel she backed away. Once I placed water and food in, she walked right in. Date of intake: 15-Apr-2018 Spay/Neuter status: Yes Means of surrender (length of time in previous home): Owner Surrender Behavior toward strangers: Usually friendly Behavior toward dogs: Stares at them and pulls towards them, if they bark she barks and growls Bite history: Yes, Princess bit another dog at the dog park 5 months ago. The other dog took a toy Princess had been playing with and she bit the other dog, grabbing her neck and holding on, resulting in three punctures. Other Notes: There was one incident where the 3 year old child in the home was by herself holding Princess' leash. A person approached the child and Princess lunged, barked, and growled at the person. SAFER SCORES: Date of assessment: 17-Apr-2018 Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body low and a bit fearful. Paw squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Flank squeeze 1: Item not conducted Flank squeeze 2: Item not conducted Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Princess quickly approached the assessor with a soft body. She was social throughout the assessment, allowed all handling, and displayed no concerning behaviors. Summary: When introduced to the female helper dog through the fence, Princess displays a slightly tense body, offers a brief wagging tail. Princess is muzzled for oft leash interact and appears more soft and social when greeting. However, due to history of bite incident with another dog (biting, shaking, holding when the other dog approached while she was in possession of a toy), Princess is not a candidate for further off leash playgroups due to concern for high levels of escalation. It is recommended that Princess be the only resident dog due to these observations. Date of intake: 15-Apr-2018 Summary: Princess had a relaxed body and allowed handling. Date of initial: 16-Apr-2018 Summary: Princess had a loose body and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Princess displays a medium level of activity. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Recommendations: Single-pet home Recommend no dog parks Recommendations comments: Single pet/no dog parks: Due to history of bite incident involving a dog (escalating to biting, shaking, holding on), Princess should be the only resident dog in a future home. Potential challenges: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration Potential challenges comments: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Princess has been reported to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Princess may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. An easygoing, wiggly, sweet boy, laid back, affectionate and lovely. Dreams of being your one and only pet. Id 56211, 9 Mos. Old, 62 lbs. ot Sweetness, Walting with Hope at the Manhattan ACC TO BE KILLED – 3/23/2019 Let us tell you what makes us livid over at MLD. What makes us upset is when the parents in a multi-pet home do absolutely NOTHING to ensure the safety of their pets and fail to carefully and successfully manage them so that both cats and dogs remain happy, healthy and live long lives. Leviathan is just a puppy, barely 9 months old, but he has found himself at the shelter because his parents allowed him to “play” with the cat who actually DIDN’T appreciate Leviathan’s puppy rough-housing. Now Leviathan is sitting alone and heartbroken at the shelter, and he truly doesn’t realize what he did wrong. Friendly, social, wiggly and shyly sweet, he is so laid back, easygoing, gentle and sweet. A proven family pet, he lived with very small children and was nothing but gentle with them, and every new person who came to visit got a wiggly reception when they entered the house. Leviathan is a wonderful boy, a good boy who had inexperienced parents. It was a bad adoption, plain and simple. What he needs now is an experienced family, a place where he can be the only pet. He’s so darling – just look at that mushy face! Watch is darling video and see what we mean (it’s below). You can’t help but fall in love. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.

A Dream, Being Alone, and Bones: Zena Odyssey d 55572 5 yrs, 49 lbs, of Love, at Manhattan ACC Her beloved parent of 5 years deployed overseas, a sweet, friendly, outgoing girl, who Loved a 10 Yr. old child, dreams of a new family to love. Loves sleeping in her crate, taking Long walks, running off leash. A sterling resume, a proven family pet. TO BE KILLED - 2/28/2019 ZENA ODYSSEY misses her parent with all her heart. This 5 year old girl adored going on long walks with this person, and running joyfully off leash, coming quickly back to their side when they called. Her life was a dream, and she was so happy. So it was a shock when her parent was deployed overseas, and she had her world turned upside down. She is rolling with the punches, trying her best to make friends and show everyone what a peach she is. Zena is so sweet, friendly, and outgoing. Her parent gave her glowing reviews before they had to turn around and leave, heartbroken but certain their “best girl” would find a loving home. How could she not, they thought? She’s perfection. Well, now Zena is on the list to die, and all because she is still trying to acclimate to the shelter, and she lets her guard down, only to occasionally suffer moments of anxiety …”should I let this person rub my tummy?” This is normal, and this will dissipate the minute she is fostered or adopted and is back in a family home where she can relax, rest, and then warm at her own pace to her new digs. There is nothing wrong with Zena other than she is heartbroken and wants to go home. Maybe your home? If you can save her life, please hurry and PM our page or email us at [email protected] to foster or adopting her now. ZENA ODYSSEY, ID# 55572, 5 Yrs. Being Alone, Apparently, and Cats: lina Scared & Unsure, ittle Luna needs a 2nd chance in experienced & loving hands Adorable, petite, housetrained & out of time@Brooklyn ACC SPAYED & Ready 2 B Loved Happy Valentines Day **** TO BE KILLED - 1/18/2019 **** "MY TIME IS UP. PLEASE DON'T LET ME DIE HERE." :'( Meet Luna, a tiny little girl surrendered to the Brooklyn shelter by her owner. To love and be loved. It's what we all want in life and Luna is no exception. However. we all know that we don't always get what we want. We can't change our parents - human or canine. We can only hope they will guide us by establishing rules and boundaries, all the while giving love and never give up on us. Sadly, that is not the case for Luna. She might not have been perfect in her old home but for two years she was loyal and her heart was in the right place. Her hopes and dreams for a happily ever after are about to come to a crashing halt unless someone will love her, for real this time. Luna is just a little thing in need of a second chance with an experienced and loving owner. Please help us share her for a good home before it's too late. When he moved her away by the collar she bit him on the thigh resulting in four puncture wounds. Housetrained:: Yes Energy level/descriptors:: Friendly, affectionate towards owner though fearful of strangers Date of assessment:: 1/13/2019 Summary:: Due to the high levels of fear Luna has displayed in the care center with unfamiliar caretakers combined with her behavioral challenges and bite history, she is not an appropriate candidate on whom to conduct an assessment on. Summary:: Luna's previous owner reported that she used to be playful with other dogs but a few months ago began to bark and growl at new dogs that came to her daycare. 1/13: When off leash at the Care Center, Luna initially greets the novel male dog with a tucked, lowered body. She enters the yard and moves past him. His leash is held given he is a somewhat high energy puppy to give her the choice to approach. As her session continues, she relaxes some, begins to whine, offers a few play bows and bounces. Once she begins to engage in chase play she becomes conflicted, spinning around and grumbling in the other dogs face, then walking away. 1/17: Luna was introduced to novel female today. She was more loose and wiggly and social with the female. She would explore the pens and alternate between checking in with the other female and seeking handler attention. Date of intake:: 1/12/2019 Summary:: Tense, tail tucked, growled at counselor; relaxed when treat was given. Date of initial:: 1/13/2019 Summary:: Tense, shaking, whale-eyed, tail tucked IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Handlers brought Luna out to the play yard for playgroup. She greeted the novel female dog with a loose and wiggly body. Luna spent the majority of her session in playgroup alternating between checking in with the female dog and soliciting attention from multiple handlers in the pen. Luna would jump up and place her paws on the handlers' chest and would lick their chin/faces. She would also lean her body into their legs as they pet her body. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Luna's previous owner reports that she hard barks and growls, because of this behavior combined with her propensity to escalate when startled, we believe she may be best set up to succeed in an experienced adult only home environment. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all the behavioral challenges reported in her Luna's previous home environment, combined with the severity of her bite incident, the behavior department believes Luna may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner. We highly advise exercising safe and appropriate management of Luna as she is considered to be a bite risk due to known history and some observed behavior in shelter. Force-free, free reward based training only is recommended when introducing or exposing Luna to new and unfamiliar situations; we also recommend a period of decompression in order to allow Luna to acclimate to a new home environment at her own pace. Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human) LUNA IS RESCUE ONLY…..TO SAVE THIS PUP YOU MUST FILL OUT APPLICATIONS WITH AT LEAST 3 NEW HOPE RESCUES. Being Alone, Andrew Bogut, and Bad: Her owner became homeless and now her life is at risk! Affectionate & Playful. Friendly with adults and older kids. Gentle with other dogs. Respectful of cats yrs old, 60.4 lbs Lady , ID# 27S75 Waiting on Love @ Brooklyn ACC TO BE KILLED 5/21/2018 Her person lost their home and now AFFECTIONATE AND PLAYFUL Lady will lose her life!! Volunteer Rachel Bennett writes - I walked Lady yesterday and I didn’t notice any bad behavior in her kennel, though outside she is a bit wary and slow to warm up. My guess is based on her owner notes her shyness is due to feeling uncomfortable in her new surroundings. She lived with her owner her whole life. Her notes are great: good with kids, dogs and even cats! She does seem housetrained and was overall easy to handle. ❤️ She did very well on her behavior test, has wonderful surrender notes and is A GOOD GIRL!! But she is stressed in a kennel at the shelter and so she is scheduled to die! Read her notes, she is gentle and friendly with adults and older kids (young children make her nervous). She is respectful of cats and have lived and played gently with other dogs. Lady likes to play tug with ropes and is housetrained. Well behaved when left alone, Lady also knows how to sit stay lay down give paw and come when called. Lady loves and misses her walks and playing in the yard. Please help her enjoy those simple things again, and please help #SAVELADY now! When around them she is relaxed and affectionate, and play gently with them. Here at the Care Centers, Lady has shown little sociability with other dogs. She spends most of her time exploring the yard, avoiding social greets and express her discomfort for face to face greets by baring her teeth and low growling. The Behavior Department believes Lady would be most successful as the only dog at this time. She should be given adequate time to decompress before being introduce to other dogs. 5/13: When off leash at the Care Center, Lady very briefly approaches the male helper dog with a tense posture and exchanges genital greets. She spends most of the session exploring the yard and avoiding the other dog. She explored the yard, approaching the greeter when he is occupied. 5/18: Lady is introduced to a novel female and is relaxed as she greets her. ENERGY LEVEL:: Lady is reported to have a high energy level in her previous home environment. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 5/20/18: Since arriving at the Care Center, Lady has displayed poor kennel presence (low growling, lunging, barking). While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other context, she is not thriving in a kennel environment. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13) Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Based on the level of fear and discomfort Lady has displayed in the care center, we believe she may benefit best from an adult only home at this time. A period of decompression is advised as well as force-free, reward based training. Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: Lady's previous owner reports that she will chew her pillow if it is on the floor. This is the only item reported to be chewed. We recommend managing the environment so that Lady does not get ahold of inappropriate items, and ensuring she is provided with appropriate chew toys for her to play with. Handling/touch sensitivity: Lady has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over her. It is important to always go slow and give Lady the option to walk away from any social interaction. Lady should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Lady's choice to approach a new person or thing. Lady may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Fearful: The behavior department recommends allowing Lady to approach her potential new adopters at her own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Lady to new and unfamiliar situations. * TO FOSTER OR ADOPT * If you would like to adopt a dog on our “To Be Killed” list, and you CAN get to the shelter in person to complete the adoption process *within 48 hours of reserve*, you can reserve the dog online until noon on the day they are scheduled to die.
