The way people talk about the south, especially following natural disasters, is so gross. Like why are you constantly making jokes about our plight? Why do you, someone who hardly has been to the south let alone the states heavily affected, think you have more knowledge about those who live here? Why are so void of empathy that you fall on the "Oh, they could have left but didn't," Ignoring the fact that many didn't have the opportunity (or privilege) to be able to leave, especially under such circumstances? A town in NC was wiped off the map, Asheville is underwater and can only be accessed through the air, Appalachia has/is experiencing flooding that they weren't prepared for, and these are just a few examples. Real life people were/are being impacted by Helene, so maybe stop making jokes about their suffering or acting entitled.
#hurricane helene#asheville#north carolina#appalachia#like i always see this type of rhetoric spike whenever southern states are experiencing massive loss#and it's so annoying especially coming people who've never been to the south#like i could be wrong but helene shifted (like storms do) and hit asheville in which no one was prepared for#also some people literally can't leave bc there's nowhere else to go or they're disabled and the care they need can't be transported
