Author’s Note: This series diverges from TRR canon, where instead of waiting to discuss his relationship with Riley until their last night in NYC, leaving her a note while Liam is proposing to her, Drake tackles this topic as soon as possible after Tariq makes his statement and Riley’s name is cleared. “So, who owns this place again?”

“It’s Cam’s uncle’s girlfriend’s sister’s building.”

“And we trust her… why?”

“Because she is fine with Cam vouching for us, so no income minimum, no issue with your lack of credit history, and no broker’s fee.”

Drake nodded. It still felt kind of shady to him, going to check out random units they heard about from different people they were tangentially connected to, but he was deferring to Riley completely, seeing as he had never been responsible for finding his own housing in his life. And apartment hunting in New York, it turned out, was a complicated task.

Back in February, when they’d started trying to figure out what neighborhoods to consider, Riley had told him not to bother searching the units listed on basically any website.

“There’s gonna be massive broker’s fees, and they probably won’t take us since we won’t have a guarantor. There’s a lot of scams, too. Just talk to your coworkers, word of mouth is going to be the best way to do this,” she’d warned him. 

Drake had done as she’d asked, but the units that his connections, the ones at the law firm he’d been sent to as coverage for one of the assistants who was out after surgery, recommended had not been a good fit. One didn’t allow dogs, one had been a definite bait and switch scam that looked nothing like the pictures he’d been shown, and the one they’d checked out last week was nice, but they would have needed a roommate to make it affordable, something they both weren’t really interested in doing.

But today they were checking out a one bedroom place in the Kensington neighborhood in Brooklyn that she’d heard about through one of her managers. They were supposed to meet with the building owner at 3 o’clock, so they had taken the F train over just after lunch so that Drake could get a better feel for the area.

Now that it was April, the weather was finally feeling like spring more consistently. It really couldn’t have been a nicer day for them to walk around the neighborhood. Drake was shocked at how close they were to a park. It was crowded as all get out, given that everyone and their mother seemed to want to take advantage of the pleasant day, but Prospect Park was large, had fishing spots, and most importantly, was some actual green space. While there were still numerous restaurants in the neighborhood, it felt so much more residential than their current apartment’s location. Drake could actually see why people would choose to live in a place like this.

The building owner, Kris, let them in and showed them up to the second floor walk-up she was looking to lease. It was in an older building, but everything looked well maintained at least. And it was big, probably twice as big as their current apartment. Drake was sure the fact that he’d been living in a 35 square meter studio for over four months was influencing him, but it just felt larger than his quarters at the palace had been, even though he was sure that wasn’t the case.

He wandered around, checking out the bedroom while Riley chatted specifics with Kris. After their first apartment tour a couple of weekends ago, they’d both quickly decided that was the best approach. Not only did Riley have more experience and knew the better questions to ask, but when left to her own devices, she was often able to charm landlords into throwing in some sort of perk, like waiving the pet fee or granting them some flexibility on move in dates. It was best to let her just do her thing.

As he checked out the closet space, it hit him how different his life was now than it was even six months ago. That Drake would have just been amazed that Riley would ever willingly choose to be with him over Liam. He could have never pictured himself choosing an apartment in New York with her. Sitting down and making plans for the future with her. 

It was easy to look at her and say that the change was all about her. And to an extent, that was true. He probably wouldn’t have found the motivation to make any changes in his life if he hadn’t met her. But it really was about more than that. It was about stepping up, letting go of the past, and taking ownership of his own happiness. He remembered Riley yelling at him, telling him he was scared to make changes in his life because he might still end up miserable on the other side of them. Basically telling him he needed to stop making himself a victim by his own choosing. And she’d been right.

Sure, some things were still a work in progress. Their visit to Texas a handful of weeks ago had proven that his relationship with his mother was not going to be mended overnight, after all. But on the other hand, he was hard pressed to imagine the man he was six months ago willingly getting an office job and going out for drinks after work with colleagues. He probably also wouldn’t have gotten a more “professional” haircut at the advice of one of those coworkers in hopes of turning a temp job into a permanent one. He would have fought such advice tooth and nail, insisting that anyone who cared that much about something as dumb as a haircut was a stuck up asshole, not worth his time. And while part of him still felt that way, he now saw it was a small price to pay to try and gain a more stable income so that Riley could cut down to part time at the bar and go back to college in the fall and work on finishing those last two semesters. Plus, she seemed to like his cleaned up cut, which was an added bonus.

The only way her going back to school was even a possibility was actually because of Maxwell. When he had let them know he was coming to New York for a “business venture,” they had both been confused, to say the least. But, when they met up with him for dinner and drinks, he’d told them he had found a way to bring some much needed cash to the Beaumonts - he had sold the rights to a holiday movie to the Hallmark channel, and that the script was so well received that they wanted him to keep writing for them. This had meant nothing to Drake himself, but Riley had just laughed, explaining that it was a TV network that made dozens of cheesy romance movies each year, many of them centered around Christmas.

When pressed, Maxwell had informed them, rather reluctantly, that the plot of the movie centered around a New York City waitress who came to a European country as the date of a prince for some Christmas ball, but ended up falling in love with his best friend. Despite Maxwell’s assurances that he was barely inspired by them and that all the names and locations were changed and that Christmas had nothing to do with Riley’s time in Cordonia, Drake and Riley had called him out on profiting off their story. Eventually, they struck a deal - they got a percentage of his payout for the script, which was going to cover most of Riley’s first semester tuition, and Maxwell had to help them with their move. It still irritated Drake a bit that Maxwell had just decided to throw their story out there for the world, but Liam had told him he approved the script and said it really wasn’t identifying at all, so Drake just decided to be grateful that Maxwell had not only brought Riley into his life, but also was giving her a ticket towards a job that didn’t require her to work a shitton of nights and weekends.

Drake wandered back towards the living and kitchen area, passing Riley and Kris in the narrow hallway, looking at the bathroom. He squeezed her hand as he passed them, and she threw him a little wink. He took in the main space of the apartment. They would be able to get a couch and a TV in there with their table, maybe even a bookcase. The kitchen was actually pretty nice, too. It probably had three times as much counter space as their current place. Everything here felt like it could work.

He opened the cabinets absentmindedly, half checking out the storage space, half waiting to see what Riley had to say about the place. After a couple more minutes, Riley and Kris came back out.

“Alright, well I’ll give you two a minute to talk it over,” said Kris, heading to the door, “I’ll be back in a few and you can let me know if you want to go forward with a lease.”

“Sounds good. Thanks, Kris.” said Riley, leaning against the end of the counter.

As soon as the door latched, Riley looked up at Drake, “So what do you think?”

“I think it’s great. It feels too good, to be honest. How bad’s the rent?”

Riley paused for a couple seconds, “1850.”

“That can’t be right. That’s less than what we’re paying now, and it’s so much bigger.”

She chuckled a little bit, “Well, that’s the beauty of not living in a prime neighborhood.”

Drake just shook his head. He considered this location to be far more desirable than their current one, but he knew he was in the minority there. “What do you think about it?”

“I think this could be a really good fit for us.”

“You’re okay with his neighborhood?”

She nodded and gave him a smile, “This is a pretty diverse area of the city, so the restaurant options are good, and there’s decent access to the Q and F trains, so the commute shouldn’t be too bad.” She stood up and joined him further in the kitchen, placing her hands on his shoulders. “Let’s be real, Drake. I’m not going to be as hard to please with this as you are. So, you gotta be honest with me. Can you see yourself here?”

He nodded, “Yeah, Liu. I can. I love this place.”

“Really?”

“Really. Is she willing to lease to us?”

“It seems like it. It sounds like her last tenant moved out unexpectedly, and her late partner used to handle the financial side of things, so she just wants to rent it out as quickly as possible.”

“And she’s cool with Anderson?”

“She told me she’s fine with small breeds.”

“Great, let’s sign.”

“Woah there,” she said, laughing, “And they say I’m the impulsive one.”

“What’s to discuss, Liu? Do you think we’re gonna find a better place than this one?”

She just shook her head and shrugged a little.

“Okay, then I stand by my statement  - we should sign the lease today. If she’s motivated to lease this unit quickly, don’t we need to jump on it?”

“I just want you to be sure, Drake,” Riley said, biting her lip slightly before she continued, “Last time you moved on a whim, things kind of… blew up for us for a while.”

Drake let out a little snort, “I think this is a little different, Liu.”

She raised an eyebrow at him, “That may be the case, but I want us to actually take a minute and think about this. Make sure we can see ourselves here, okay?” And with that she plopped down on the floor, laying back and closing her eyes.

“Uh, Liu… what the fuck are you doing?”

She opened one eye and squinted at him, “I’m just taking a moment to tune out everything else and think about this. You should try it,” she said, waving him down.

Drake rolled his eyes, but sat down on the kitchen floor and leaned back slowly in the opposite direction. This seemed dumb as hell, but if it’s what she needed from him to not feel like he was going to flake out on her, he would do it.

They laid like that for almost a minute, breathing slowly. No fears or concerns or worries crept into his mind, which he was pretty sure was the point of this exercise. He wasn’t sure how long they were supposed to do this, but then he heard her moving and felt her curl her body against his head, snaking her hand under his neck and resting her head on his chest.

“So, any reservations about his place?” she asked.

He opened his eyes and glanced down at her. Her eyes were staring back at him, wide and dark.

“None,” he said shaking his head slightly, “I think the fact that there’s enough floor space in the kitchen for us to do this has just convinced me even more.”

She chuckled softly, tracing soft circles along his neck with her fingers. “So, you want to sign the lease then?”

“Yeah, Liu,” he said, letting his eyes fall shut at her soothing touch, “This feels like home.”

My grandpa, the most imperfect perfect Christian (I’ll explain later), Who was a drill sergeant in the army in his younger years....here are some things he’s done and why he’s he best as well as the Sweden of the family.

• Knocked a recruit out with a smoky the bear helmet (the helmet also broke). Gramps got in a bit of trouble but not a lot

• A long time ago a neighbor had kept leaving the shared gate open and my mom’s dog (her name was Falkore) nearly got out many times and could have gotten killed. My grandpa was nice for a bit. But the pets aren’t pets. They’re family. So he walked across the yard and got up in the neighbors face and the drill sergeant in him came out. No one knew what was said bc of him speaking quietly but my grandpa scared the guy enough that their was a “FOR SALE” sign on his trailer the next day.

• Stalked my grandma (playfully) and that’s how they ended up together. Everywhere my grandma went my grandpa would be seen there too. Bar hopping.

• Would always watch cartoons with the kids and knows the gen 1 mlp theme pretty much by heart.

• Was In jail or prison or something for a while and read the Bible from front to back and can quote it.

• He doesn’t judge at all. If you asked him to use certain pronouns for you he will (with little to know accidental mess ups)

• Has looked at our shopping cart at food lion and just in a deadpan voice went “we have a whole cart full of diabetes”

• When trying a sour head or war head (one of the two) he spat it out across the kitchen counter the second he put it in his mouth and said “what the hell was that”

• Talks for the animals

• Though he cant have too much sugar my family still buys him big bags of Oreos bc he loves Oreos. He could sit down with an entire container plus a large glass of milk and just sit and eat them. It’s hilarious

• Can play guitar

• Has met multiple celebrities from the 80’s

• Has a celebrity crush on Madonna (isn’t open about it but you can hear it in his voice whenever she’s brought up)

• Always plants a garden every year during the summer to have something to do despite the constant pain of bending over bc he’s had a few back surgeries

• Has offered to buy my mom a house and has gone out of his way to buy an expensive dress she was eyeballing for prom (she got stood up by her date unfortunately)

• He’s a simple man and hard to buy for but will take note of the littlest details about you and will buy accordingly

• Everyone falls him Lala

• “Hey, Lala, I’m on my period and having really bad cramps” “the ibuprofen’s on the fridge. I’ll get it for you”

• During family fights he tries to stay out of the fights and stay neautral and try to ease things

• Makes some of the best god dang ribs and steak ever

• When hes home alone he watches history documentaries but when my grandma is home they watch shows like Supernatural, Schitts Creek, Lucifer, etc.

• Speaking of grandma, whenever she’s on Facebook looking at a video of say a snake he balls of a piece of tissue or printer paper and throws it from the bed where he sits so he can startle her. They both laugh. She hasn’t picked up any of the paper bc it’s funny.

• He is forever buying bird food and the birds are always around. We mostly get doves, cardinals, and robins.

• He’s always wanted a dog named Susie and someone bought him a small glass dog that he keeps on his wardrobe. He calls it Susie.

• His mom loved squirrel brains so in his younger days (even at they age of like 2) he’d go out with his gun and some traps and come home later with squirrels. My grandma walked into his living room one day to see a cage in the middle with some squirrels in it and that’s how she found out.

• Will spend hours (literally) at Kay Jewlers to find the perfect ring for my grandma during Christmas time

• If he’s not on the bed watching tv or not in kitchen or not in the shed he’s on the deck in the early morning (7am or 8) drinking straight black coffee watching the hummingbirds feed in the feeders

• One time my mom and uncle were in the car and the doors would not unlock so he told them to move up front (he was outside) and he broke the back window to get in and unlock the car. He wasn’t worried about it. He basically believes in the lion king morals about the past.

• Will automatically know if the house is out of someththing. It’s like a sixth sense.

• He doesn’t like rice all that much anymore bc of Vietnam but he still makes it for others. He also never forgets others when he’s shopping and if you say you need something but haven’t been able to find it then he will come back with what you were looking for some way somehow.

• Loves Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi (which seems to be the only song besides Centerfold that he actually likes that plays on the local radio station)

• Will sing certain songs that come on the radio however he does it in this deep voice that sounds like it’s from the 50’s. It’s kinda neat.

The Reality of the Witch’s Curse!

Like many folks who came to the Craft later than they wish they had, during the mid-1990s, I was indoctrinated with a belief in the three-fold law; and, I upheld this until reason made me question it.  Particularly when I read the final speech given by Doreen Valiante shortly before her passing in the late 90s (see, Wiccan Wisdom keepers).  Even the late Ellen Cannon Reed questioned the Rede in her brilliant book, The Heart of Wicca, since she knew folks who took is to literally that they wouldn’t raise a hand to defend themselves if they were being attacked or beaten!  The late and fabulous Gardnerian HPs, Judy Harrow also contributed to this discussion of the Rede in order to put it within a proper context, and to help us to individually think critically about what we think of as harm and defense, etc. in order to develop our own ethos in her brilliant article, “Exegesis on the Wiccan Rede”.  (I originally printed it directly from her website several years ago; but, I have since lost it, I fear.)  I suggest reading both of these documents, including Robin Wood’s book, When, Why...If?: An Ethics Workbook.

But, where does this leave the curse and it’s place within modern Witchcraft?  As I was listening to my buddy (Uncle Birch) on his podcast--Widdershins--a few weeks ago; I believe it was “Stupid Shit Witches Say, Pt. 2″.  As with Birch, I often saw Witches say or publish in their books that, if you don’t believe in them, curses cannot affect you.  And, at one time, I used to believe this due to our modern age.  However, my view had changed; particularly within the past few years.  Even my personal hera, Doreen Valiant, believed in the reality of curses.  After all, if they had no efficacy, then such museums as The Museum of Witchcraft and Magick at Boscastle, England would not house countless artifacts of such folk-magick within their archives.  Indeed, sometimes karma needs a helping hand, which we have seen within the last couple of years as witches have gathered en mass to hex our current President.  During the early 2000s, I fashioned a poppet of anti-Gay hate-monger, Maggie Gallagher who founded the anti-Gay hate-group the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). I had eventually bound the poppet with a black nylon cord.  In fact, when each of my beloved dogs were alive I allowed them to play with and chew on the poppet to farther empower and add to the hex.  I really gave that poppet hell, especially when Gallagher was on a personal anti-Gay hate-tour that took her right through Iowa where she tried to foment anti-Gay animosity here, since Iowa was one of the first states to legalize Marriage Equality (there were Gay bashings and bomb threats at our Gay bars in the months that followed her arrival).  Since the SCOTUS ruling in 2017, however, we really haven’t heard much (if anything) from that wretched shrew.

More recently, however, in the late summer of 2017 I got in a horrible argument with my younger brother who’s much bigger than I.  For no reason that I could determine, other than his inability to express his emotions in a positive manner he began calling me horrible names such as “cock sucker”, right in front of our mother.  He just kept at and wouldn’t let up, since he was frustrated that he couldn’t see his son whose baby-mama lives in Georgia.  Well, I kept getting more and more pissed off, so I took the smallest, softest, and fluffiest that you can think of, threw it at him with a departing “fuck you!” as I attempted to storm off to my room.  He caught me and began to literally throw me around the room like a rag doll, and kicked me with his boots on, and so on and so forth.

When our fight was over I locked myself in my room because my heart was racing and my blood-pressure threatened to blow my head off!  I was also quit dizzy from the experience.  So, I laid in bed for several hours, trying to calm down; meanwhile, my rage and anger was boiling over at my brother.  It was in this state that--with all my Will--I visualized something terrible happening to my brother that would make him for years, if not for life.  In fact, I kept focussing my visualization on his right leg “seeing” a black lightning bolt on it, with him laying in a hospital bed.  You have no idea how hard I had to control my thoughts and energy to avoid anything lethal!  But, I held these visualizations of him in a hospital for hours until I finally fell asleep after several hours.

Now, fast forward to almost literally six months later!  My brother was busy helping his BFF flip a house that his friend had bought.  While he was busy atop a ladder, the ladder suddenly wobbled and he fell parallel to the house and landed on his feet.  He was no more than 6 feet off the ground and had fallen from that height before with no ill effects; but, this time was different.  My brother dislocated his knee and had to be taken to hospital.  Now, we aren’t sure if the fall ruptures that artery below that knee, or if the Drs. did it when they set his knee without any anesthetics because he’d had a couple beers.  Unfortunately, the pain from setting his knee cause Jared to black out!  Immediately afterward he was transferred to a better hospital downtown!  Though, if time was of the essence, because his right leg had gone without blood flow for almost an hour, why was’t the hospital rushing to get him downtown?  Instead, they seemed to be taking their time!  It took them nearly 45 minutes to get him en route to the other hospital.  And, once there, he had two separate surgeries: 1.) to graft some veins to bypass his destroyed artery with two NASTY fasciotomy incisions along his right leg to relieves the pressure from his blood flow; and, 2.) another surgery to fit an X-brace on him.  He was in that hospital, and utterly bed ridden for almost an entire month!  (You’d think that staying in bed would have made him more sympathetic to me, since I am always stuck here with nowhere to go and nothing to do; but, no, as I will shortly explain.)  Once home he was bought a new bed and given a makeshift bedroom in the living room while his home-care nurse came every couple days to change his fasciotomy dressings, which was an extremely painful experience!  (The one benefit his snorting fasciotomy devise had was that it made us think of our little beagle who had died late in the year prior; so, we all slept VERY well that first night.)  He was utterly bed ridden for almost two months until he got a skin graft over his fasciotomy incisions.  And, when he healed from those, he was gone and out the door with his friends and doing things, etc.  You’d have thought he’d ask me if I wanted to go do anything with him, but no.  Even though I was pretty much his live-in caretaker, whom he often abused while he was in bed!  Now, you could say that this is simply a massive coincidence, but his affected leg was the one I visualized, and his recovery room was precisely the room that I saw in my visualization, too (the smallest room on the floor).  This makes coincidence less likely.  The nurses and staff thought he would loose his leg, and gave him a minute chance.

Now, why am I sharing this story with you?  Well, as Uncle Birch is quick let you know, simply not believing in curses doesn’t make one any less vulnerable; in fact, quite the opposite is true since my brother doesn’t have the slightest belief in spells as curses, as he often tells me!  In fact, his non-belief in spells didn’t protect him from the brunt of my own unintentional curse.  In fact, while I never told him of my curse--since we still get along now and then--he teases me now and again if he can’t find an article of clothing, saying, “Wade’s probably using it to put a spell on me!”  Ha!  If he only knew, I don’t need a link to him with powerfully sustained visualization!  In fact, that recalls to my mind something that Gerald Gardner once said during an interview; that to curse someone you would have to work yourself up into such a rage towards them that you want to knock them down!  I believe he’s absolutely correct, and new something of magick that most Witches these days simply do not.

Family Gatherings (Post 118) 12-2-15

About two months ago Pam's mother Barb let me know about that Pam's Aunt Patty was planning a family reunion for the Saturday after Thanksgiving and asked us if we would be able to make it down.  I told her we would attend as my social calendar is as empty as the state of Wyoming in a spring snow storm.  I think my next semi-firm appointment is my brother's retirement from the Navy this spring. I don't count the plant Christmas party because really that is business.  

I will probably attend that as well, as my office mate has solemnly promised me that he will not twerk this year.  Several people have offered to provide me with video clips of his outstanding performance last year, but I am a "no twerking none of the time" type of guy.  Anyway I guess I have a few things I will be going to this holiday season, but a trip down to Maryland sounded like a good way for Natalie to get to meet more of Pam's family than she has gotten to see since we migrated back East.

Although Abby had made plans to spend Thanksgiving with her friend Tyler in New York City, she arranged her schedule so that she could catch a bus down to Baltimore on Friday morning.  As usual, she had everything about her week in New York and the transit south to meet up with the rest of the family planned down to a tee.  Nicholas also performed to his consistent level of planning efficiency by forgetting to ask off from work at O'Reilly's Auto Parts but that was serendipitous for me as his oversight freed me from having to kennel the two dogs that my middle children conned me into allowing them to purchase nearly two years ago.  One of the two critters is actually lying on my legs and gnawing on a raw hide product as I am typing.

So everything about the trip to Maryland went smoothly unless you count the text message that I got almost immediately after leaving my Ohio house. It was from Tyler who let me know Abby's schedule because Abby had left her phone accidentally in Tyler's dormitory room and was headed to Baltimore incommunicado - something no normal person has considered doing on purpose since 2005.  Unfortunately for Abby, I had goofed off that morning and slept in late enough so that my vector was trailing her now silent arrival into the greater Baltimore area by several hours.  Luckily, Barb was able to coordinate an effective meetup without the need of cellular communication.  I wasn't all that disturbed as the rendezvous was in broad daylight at the White Marsh park-and-drive which, in no way, resembles the hood.

Stephen, Natalie and I arrived at Barb's house a few hours later to find Abby and Denny, Pam's father, binge watching some type of post zombie apocalypse martial arts cable series of which I had never heard.  Abby had planned to stay at the house with Denny, Barb, Pam's brother and his son.  She wanted to do what she could to cheer up Denny who was recovering from shoulder surgery and has been feeling out of sorts.  In retirement Denny likes to keep busy but physical activity does not mix well with a shoulder sling.  My father-in-law looked quite pleased to have his granddaughter handy for watching what looked to me to be the modern equivalent of a spaghetti western.

The rest of us, on the other hand, were scheduled to stay with Pam's uncle Johnnie, a retired probation officer who lives alone in the old house that his father had built for the family fifty or sixty years previous.  Johnnie gets a kick out of Natalie and Abby, but was quite satisfied to have at least one of them under his roof, which is located about twenty minutes away and within a couple of minutes' drive of the family plot where Pam is buried along with her grandparents.  We met up with Johnnie at one of Pam's sisters' houses located another twenty minutes from Pam's folk's house in another direction entirely.  Pam's Baltimore-centric immediate family does a Friday night post-Thanksgiving left-over pot luck that was quite enjoyable.  Plates cleared, we trailed behind Uncle Johnnie, or UJ as the kids call him, back towards his Hanover, MD abode after the dinner broke up.

I stayed up a while talking with him after Natalie shuffled off to her guest bedroom.  Stephen and I were sleeping in the living room.  I enjoy talking to Johnnie as he and I share many interests.  His politics are more conservative than mine and he prefers the Latin Mass only while I am more Catholic with respect to my Catholic masses, but we both share a love for military history.  With regard to the Civil War, he likes the gentility of the Gray while I prefer the idealism of the Blue.  I am forever a Yankee in all respects other than baseball, but Johnnie and I appreciate each other's opinion.  We also share an unspoken camaraderie as circumstances have turned both of our lives into sometimes lonely but not morose slogs in the footprints of those who have preceded us towards and though the veil to eternal life.

We woke up relatively late, breakfasted and made a quick stop at the cemetery for a visit with Pam and her grandparents before heading to the family reunion on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  Natalie was pleased that her memorial stones painted as a butterfly and hamburger were still in the same positions on the graves where she had left them in September.  Some poor soul had pilfered the bronze vase from the marker assembly of Pam's grandmother, but Johnnie was already aware of the desecration and seemed resigned to the fact that we live among a generation of grave robbers.  

After a short visit and no tears we began a much longer car trip than I expected to where Barb's other sibling, Patty, now resides.  Her husband, a twice retired cop - formerly a barracks commander for the State Police and then a County Sherriff - has now found work in an unelected second-in-command at the Sherriff's office of a county that is very close to a place called Ocean City that I had heard of but never visited.  I believe that Ocean City is a Maryland equivalent of the Jersey Shore without as much swearing and orange toner.  That might be an inaccurate characterization as I am a rank amateur with respect to Maryland cultural studies.

The journey did include a fly-by of Annapolis, my stomping ground several decades previous, but mostly the drive broke new ground for me.  I am sure that I probably have been across the Bay Bridge - Chesapeake version, but I didn't really remember the road or the scenery.  I did notice a definite improvement in how property was maintained in the towns of the Eastern Shore in comparison with some of the Baltimore neighborhoods we had driven through the previous day.  Things appeared conservatively well-kept if not crazy wealthy and the drive was a pleasant one.  I was just glad that the reunion was not planned for the summer as there seemed to be only one main drag, Route 50, which probably would be grossly inadequate for the onslaught of weekend beachcombers if we were visiting in the last days of July instead of the final November weekend.

Once we arrived, we enjoyed the party although we found the festivities slightly divided along family lines as many reunions tend to be.  Patty's relatives tended to congregate in the living room and sun room of the house, while her husband's relations mostly conversed in the kitchen and family room.  It was a natural division and an amicable one.  I had joined the family over a quarter century pervious and had encountered a couple of Scott's extended family members less than a handful of times.  

I caught up with the lives of those few that I knew, but mostly played wingman for Johnnie when I wasn't conversing with Abby.  Natalie played with the pack of collective kiddies, while Stephen wandered around the yard which had little bit of a beachhead on a creek-side location that let into a river then into the Chesapeake and eventually into the Atlantic. I was disappointed not to catch of whiff of salt marsh, an odor that evokes my seafaring days.  Unfortunately, this property was more inland and manicured like a golf-course in a tasteful and charming sort of way.  Perhaps Copperopolis, Round Valley and Muir Wood has spoiled me so that I can now only appreciate the breathtaking.  Ohio fall forest colors does fit the bill, though.

While we were frittering through the afternoon in small talk over light snacks, I did catch a bad vibe from Johnnie.  The nexus of his discomfort seemed to be the respective spouses of the brother and sister who had been the flower girl and ring bearer at my wedding what seems like eons ago.  To my eye both had married well.  The ring bearer had picked up the tools of the family trade, a badge and pistol of some sort.  His spouse was a pretty blonde whose slim waist seemed in congruent with her three rug rats that I could see pictured in the family portrait on the coffee table next to where we sat.  His sister had married a nice looking young man that was thoroughly balding but pretty athletic for a posture that was probably pushing thirty-five. I watched him pitch whiffle balls to his two pre-school aged sons alternately.  The younger one was a tiger. 

I didn't see the problem, so Johnnie explained the issue.  Both the spouses were atheists and none of the kids had been baptized.  Under closer observation, I noticed that neither of the spouses really smiled or enjoyed other people. Maybe they were put off by being tertiary participants in a family gathering that didn't interest them, but they seemed to be alone within a large group of joyous people. It is possible that other people were thinking the same thoughts about me, but their separation seemed to be palpably different, and I considered adding the two of them to my prayer list, but I didn't know their names.  Johnnie couldn't provide them, he said that he had never been introduced in the half decade since the two joined the family.  Evidently, both the flower girl and ring bearer live quite close to Johnnie, but there is no contact between them. I expect that UJ is the Godfather of both of them as he is to one of my children.

 The separation seemed strange and disheartening to the both of us.  Both of the little families had raised high bulwarks to prevent any possible intrusion of Jesus Christ. I expect that someday and unforeseen tragedy will visit them in their purposefully insular worlds and they will discover that their walls bricked to keep out Our Savior will unfortunately form a bathtub of pain for them to marinate in.  Neither Johnnie, Jesus nor I are satisfied with that situation, but we respect and disagree with their choices as responsible adults.  

I am not a particularly good prayer warrior, but I do plan to spend some time praying for something to innocuously breach the walls of their atheistic aquaria.  Advent seems like an excellent time to affix our eyes on a better outcome for whatever relatives and friends we have that have chosen problematic paths that are currently orientated away from True North.

they have raised my rates twice in less than 6 months. my first months were 94 for the platnum plan then in november they raised to 98 and now in march they raised to 108. the say that the state of texas is raising rates for companies and thats why my rates go up. is this happening to anyone else. im in tx. im changing my plan as soon as possible. anyone have allstate that could advise.

Term Life Insurances-Unknown policy?

Could anyone, e.g my ex-wife, open an insurance policy for me and make herself the beneficiary without me knowing. If that can be done how can I confirm that there is such a policy?
