I wrote that post before going to sleep so I didn't really elaborate, and I was still kinda pissy about it, so it came out harsher than I intended it, but yes, exactly this.
Also, I want to start this off by saying: Don't let me ruin your fun. If you like the show how it is, that's great! If you like Chaggie how it is, that's also great! Don't let my disappointment ruin it for you. They're not that bad compared to many other boring main couples in media, but they are also not great.
When I see people saying things like "they're just over their honeymoon phase, you're just not used to it!" it irritates me a bit because like, no, babies, no, don't defend this. They' are neglected.
The main issue of most of shows that are coming out recently, including Hazbin Hotel, is that they're bound by 8 episodes per season format and it's hurting them greatly. This show pretty much doesn't have any fillers and that leaves very little for character development.
Charlie and Vaggie are cute but they aren't engaging. They are more of a couple in the background instead of the main couple. Pre-established couples don't need drama to be interesting, but when all we get is subtlety in a sea of plot, drama and other characters development it just drowns.
The little interaction they do have with eachother are very repetitive. They hold hands, touch eachother's faces and say some encouraging words. There's nothing wrong with them being cute and supportive, but we don't see much variety in their interactions. This just make you feel you've seen everything they have to offer.
Another thing is that we know very little about them as a couple. We learned how they meet and that's it. We might guess why they are together, especially Vaggie, but that's it. They should balance eachother so that's probably why they got together.
This brings me to Vaggie and how there is a very clearly power imbalance in their relationship. Vaggie gives her everything for Charl, she does everything she is asked, even when she doesn't want to, but we don't really see Charlie doing that much for her, because Charl is busy pushing the plot. Besides, Charlie saved Vaggie and as far as we know that's all Vaggie knows and it creeps me out a bit, but that's just me.
Yes it's true that people tend to find drama and angst engaging, which is why we see more complicated ships get so much focus in fandoms, but drama doesn't make you a relationship. Same as sexual tension, it can be entertaining to watch, but lack of it doesn't make something boring. Established characters also need to be more than a cardboard cutout, in fact they need even more depths than others or else they will be flat and boring.
Oh, also, because apparently someone people didn't get it chemistry between people IRL ≠ chemistry between characters/actors. Chemistry in a relationship refers to the intense feelings of connection, passion, and romance that people in relationships share. We undoubtedly see it with Chaggie. But On-screen chemistry is about how well the actors or/and characters interact with each other, whether that relationship is romantic or not. It about dialogue that flows well, about compatibly and how the characters gain depth when reacting to eachother. Good chemistry is often noticed most in the moments when people don’t say anything. With Chaggie it's just not really there.
In conclusion, Hazbin Hotel spends too little time on developing Chaggie and depths to their relationship, focusing on everything but them until they do, making them boring to watch.
Apparently a controversial thought, but people wouldn't ship Alastor/Lucifer, and Husk/Angel Dust as hard as they do if the main couple wasn't the most boring, empty relationship. Vaggie and Charlie are together because the writer said so, not because there's any chemistry between them. There is no logic to why they are together.
