Kevin takes up knitting during the off season, hoping to help with his bum hand. He’s not good at it, and that bothers him, but he keeps trying mostly out of spite.
“This hat looks like a kidney bean,” Neil says, picking it up and studying it. It's pale orange (the yarn had been on sale at the craft store) and lopsided. A couple of stitches had come free, and it's possible, if anyone breathed on it wrong, it'll fall apart. It's his fourth attempt.
“Give me that,” Kevin grumbles, trying to snatch it from Neil.
“No, wait, I want it,” Neil says, dodging out of Kevin's reach and putting the hat on his head. It falls into his eyes, blocking his vision. “How do I look?” He turns to Andrew, who is sitting across the room in a bean bag chair, flipping through a magazine.
Andrew looks up, snorting softly. He then looks back at the magazine, turning another page. There's a hint of amusement in his eyes, and it doesn't take a genius to know what he's thinking.
Kevin scowls at him, yanking the hat off Neil's head. He shoves it into his knitting bag, picking it up off the floor and heading towards the door. He opens the door, saying over his shoulder, “Keep it up and I'm not making you anything for Christmas.”
“Oh no, what ever will I do without a kidney bean hat,” Andrew says sarcastically.
“Shut up,” Kevin says, slamming the door behind him. He leans against the door, seething for a minute, and then pushes away. He checks his bag, making sure he didn't forget anything, and huffs when he finds the hat gone. He hadn't even seen Neil take it back (sneaky shit head).
“Goddamnit, Neil.”
