Actually I'm starting to wonder if D. A. B. Ronald shipped the Turn version of John/Peggy just that hard that he devoted over half his bio of André to explaining how they were actually IRL plotting together for her to marry some American general and convince him to switch sides.

It was published in well after Turn came out....

Yes well the problem with that is that if you look up the rest of the "never fond of gadding" line, it's actually about Peggy being a shy little homebody, not a cutthroat girlboss who goes for what she wants. (The source is the Lewis Burd Walker Life of Margaret Shippen series of articles that were published in about 1900 and which I only seem to be able to find on JSTOR.)
