A collection: times Mortimer Lightwood is described as being 'founded on' Eugene Wrayburn:
Despite that pernicious assumption of lassitude and indifference, which had become his second nature, [Mortimer] was strongly attached to his friend. He had founded himself upon Eugene when they were yet boys at school; and at this hour imitated him no less, admired him no less, loved him no less, than in those departed days.
Mortimer parries thus, with a sense upon him that elsewhere it is Eugene and not he who is the jester, and that in these circles where Eugene persists in being speechless, he, Mortimer, is but the double of the friend on whom he has founded himself.
‘You wanted to tell me something, Eugene. My poor dear fellow, you wanted to say something to your old friend—to the friend who has always loved you, admired you, imitated you, founded himself upon you, been nothing without you, and who, God knows, would be here in your place if he could!’
To whom, add Mortimer Lightwood, coming in among them with a reassumption of his old languid air, founded on Eugene, and belonging to the days when he told the story of the man from Somewhere.
#'who is this post for?' i hear you ask#for me#i have been thinking Too Much about that one webpage that is like 'mortimer has an avuncular interest in eugene'#avuncular apparently means 'like an uncle'#so i've been gnashing my teeth about that for months and months#to be fair to the person who wrote it:#i think their use of 'avuncular' is due to a misreading of an illustration rather than of the book itself#though:#on the same webpage they also describe the scene in the illustration as taking place in their club#it doesn't it takes place in their chambers in the temple#they are living together by that point of the book#but i think i just have to accept that not everyone is going to read mortimer and eugene's relationship as closely as me lol#also regardless of anything he may say i am grateful to the person who wrote the webpage because he uploaded the illustration and others#mortimer lightwood#eugene wrayburn#i'm also going to tag this#lightburn#even though i'm not even really shipping in this post#i'm just pointing out... if you're 'founding yourself' upon someone... you probably aren't feeling much like their uncle#also i'm not convinced mortimer is even the elder of the two#i'm not sure what the difference in training between solicitors and barristers was...#but eugene was called to the bar 7 years before the beginning of the book and mortimer has been on the roll 5 years#so if anything eugene would seem to me to be older?#anyway#our mutual friend#queue
