i re-watched notting hill last night for the first time in maybe a decade and my god . . . i know it's cliche to say this, but they really don't fuckin make them the way they used to. the fact that the “meet cute” (now done to death) spilling a drink on the love interest bit actually amounts to cute, but clever jokes that obligates both characters to pause and realize they share a kind of language. the banter! the sparks! the will they, wont they that takes months to organically resolve! the real and legitimate barriers to the leads having a romance that aren't easily overcome by a single, mind-numbingly simple conversation. and the desire. the desire. there's a moment in that movie where hugh grant and julia roberts are finally sharing a moment of intimacy and his hand just grazes her bare back. my god.
