Your OC’s Backstory Week 5 - First Love (Anechoi)
Intro | Family | Activities |
Questions | Who was their first love? Innocent crush, schoolyard flirt, that one person they didn’t ask out until it was too late? The first person they ever dated, or the first one they hoped to spend the rest of their life with? Are they still a couple? Friends? Enemies? How has that love influenced their life?
Prompt | Simple: Write about their first love. First eye contact, first date, first kiss - or, if you’re here for the angst, last kiss.
Anechoi never thought much of falling in love; it just didn’t seem to be something that would apply to her. After all, if her own family - the people who were supposed to love her - just didn’t, then why should she expect anything else? And so far, her life has been generally romance-free, and she’s been okay with that.
Except for Talya.
Ever since that first night, where Talya saved her from her disastrous infiltration at ProtoNetworks, there were some unaddressed feelings between the two. For Anechoi, Talya is brilliant and clever, someone who has their life together and is already running the second-largest black market on Mars. (The fact that she is literally magical helps too). For Talya, she sees in Anechoi a willful persistence and an underrated ability to improvise and think on her feet.
The only problem is, they’re both idiots. Neither of them were able to recognize that their feelings were returned, and so they stayed in that awkward position for years. Each having a crush on the other but not expressing their feelings enough to see them in the other person.
How did it end?
So that’s how you feel about her, huh? VAL asked. Talya was working on one of her circuit boards across the room, frowning as she burned the design into a block of silicon. She had her hair tucked back and a pair of black lenses over her eyes, reflecting the bright orange sparks cascading from her work.
I sighed. Dammit. Could you not. Could you really, really not.
Right, sure, of course, she agreed, completely ignoring me. For how long? And you haven’t done anything about it? I mean, I can’t say I particularly understand people and their relationship issues, but wow.
There was a downside to having an AI in your brain, surprisingly enough. It’s nothing. Hasn’t gone anywhere. Isn’t going to. Now screw off out of my brain. I shook my head, trying to focus again. Why couldn’t I just forget it? Clearly she didn’t care, so why did my idiot brain try to keep holding onto it?
VAL was silent for a second, then piped up again as if remembering something. I could probably help you with that, you know.
Don’t say it like that. You sound like one of those street-corner flash sellers, I responded automatically. Wait, what? What can you help me with?
Well, I have access to your brain, right? And if you wanted, I could take all those pesky relationship thoughts and just - slice! - partition them off. They’d stop bothering you. If she had a body, she would have shrugged. It’s up to you, course, but it is an option.
And it’d work? You can - do that? I asked. And there’s no downside? It doesn’t mean that I forget who Talya is or something like that? Was I actually considering it?
Yes. Yes I was. There was no point in holding onto the hope long after it should have disappeared. If I could find a way to actually move on - I would. It was my decision to make. Talya didn’t care - she’d never even noticed, and why would she? She ran half the underworld in Sapphire City and was the smartest person I’d ever met. I was just a random girl who she happened to feel sorry for once, years ago. If you can, do it, I told VAL.
A bright flash of orange appeared in my vision, and I winced. Sorry - sorry, VAL said. That was unplanned, but it’s fixed now. And you’re sure? I don’t know if you’ll be able to get it back.
I hesitated. Yes. Do it.
