10 Best Pest Control and Prevention Tips to Keep Pests Away
A very recurrent problem that people suffer in Delhi and Gurgaon is to keep pests away from their homes. Cities like these, especially in North India, are not just congested with high pollution levels but also quite devoid of proper ventilation in homes. As a result, the houses in these regions can become breeding grounds for different kinds of pests. Now, if you do not take immediate recourse to clearing your home of the pests, then you would suffer immense financial losses.
Pests will not only ruin your home’s foundation and structural integrity but also eat away your furniture and other possessions. In addition to this, pests will also destroy your food stock and spread diseases in the process. Hence, in order to have a safe and hygienic living space, it is essential that people should invest in good pest extermination services. There are several types of pests; insects, being the most common kind. In this short article, you will learn more about the different kinds of insects that can cause damage in your home and how you can deal with them.
Why are insects such a menace?
Insects can be quite annoying. In fact, some are such a menace that even a nominal insect-lover would not think twice before killing them. It is understandable that all creatures have specific functions in maintaining the ecological balance of the world, but certain insects have mostly negative effects and are extremely irritating. Insects will try to always bite you, suck out your blood, eat your food sources, and disturb you by buzzing around you and so on. Before long, you will feel like killing them. If you do not kill them, then the insects would only grow more in number and make your home completely inhabitable. If you suffer from a persistent insect problem in Gurgaon, then search for Pest Control in Gurgaon on the internet to get professional help on the matter. The most common types of trouble-making insects are as follows:
House flies and Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes spread diseases and bite us all the time. They are extremely annoying with their incessant buzzing sounds. Female mosquitoes would need blood for nourishment and laying eggs. Through their bites, mosquitoes will spread diseases like dengue and malaria. Also, they will disturb your sleep every night. All these factors make mosquitoes one of the most irritating and dangerous insect on the planet for human beings and your home needs to be secured against them.
House flies are, similarly, disease carriers. These insects will contaminate your food on a regular basis. You must have noticed how flies will always buzz around a warm plate of food. No matter, how much you try to send them away, flies would always come back. The flies regurgitate and then excrete on everything that they land on. This makes them dangerous carriers of diseases when they land on someone’s food. A house fly will feed on everything from excrements and wounded or injured body parts. They will then vomit it out when they land on your food. Hence, it is essential that you can rid your home off these insects. Bees can also be dangerous because they sting people. You can search for bee exterminator in Delhi on the internet to rid your place of a bee infestation.
Fleas and Ants
It would be incredibly difficult to tackle a flea infestation. Fleas have itchy bites and they generally prey on pets like dogs and cats. Fleas require blood for their survival and you would notice that your dogs have scabby bites from fleas. These insects will drop their eggs on the ground and this means that new generations of fleas would grow all over your home. A flea infestation would be disastrous for your home and it would take a lot of efforts to destroy them. It is recommended that you hire a professional pest control service provider to help you in this regard.
Ants, like mice, would destroy your food and these insects come in huge numbers so they are extremely difficult to tackle. You can find several types of ants, and they will destroy your food and leave pheromone trails which would signal other insects to also come and infest the region. Ants, like carpenter ants, would destroy your home too and eat away the timbers of your walls and furniture. You can search for mice exterminator in Delhi to rid your home from an ant and mice infestation.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches spread around a number of allergies, these insects are disease carriers, and they can breed rather quickly. Cockroaches are simply disgusting and can cause trouble throughout the year, which means you have to get professional help to remove them completely.
Conclusion
It is recommended that you get professional help to solve your pest infestation problem. Professionals would know exactly how to solve your problem in a quick and effective manner.

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Inside the House
NEED TO KNOW HOW TO EFFECTIVELY GET RID OF MOSQUITOES INSIDE THE HOUSE? Mosquitoes are found mostly in areas of high humidity and survive by sucking blood from animals and humans. Mosquito bites not only cause irritation but also through biting, mosquitoes can transmit diseases like malaria and dengue. The market is filled with tools and mosquito repellent products to kill or get rid of mosquitoes inside the house. You can also kill mosquitoes by slapping them with a swatter, squishing them between a double-handed clap or flatten them with a rolled up a magazine or newspaper.
Take a look at some popular products, natural remedies and our DIY tips to get rid of mosquitoes inside the house for good. Be sure to check out our infographic at the bottom of this post, too!
Tips for Getting Rid of Mosquitoes in the House CHEMICAL REPELLENTS If you want to ensure you and your family stays bite-free then the most effective way is to use a chemical mosquito repellent. It is recommended you use a chemical mosquito repellent containing 30-50% DEET for adults and products with a concentration of no more the 10-30% for children over 2 months of age. These chemical mosquito repellents are proven to be the most effective in keeping mosquitoes away from your skin. If you are applying sunscreen, ensure you apply the mosquito repellent over the top not the other way around as sunscreens block the effects of chemicals.
MOSQUITO NETTING If you live in a high mosquito area and have small children, it is recommended you use mosquito netting to protect infants less than 2 months from mosquito bites. Chemical repellents are deemed dangerous for the health of infants and should be avoided at all costs. Mosquito netting is also beneficial for getting rid of mosquitoes in the house if you like to sleep with the windows or doors open at night providing mosquitoes access.
NATURAL MOSQUITO CONTROL For a natural alternative to mosquito control, you have some options. For example, you may want to use essential oil-based repellents. To learn more about using essential oils please see our blog post about the dangers of DEET for information on specific natural options and information on how to use them safely and effectively.
It is important to note that while natural repellents may be effective in deterring the mosquitoes, they can cause adverse reactions on your skin, so educated and safe use is recommended.
Another natural product on the market that is effective in repelling mosquitoes is Skin Armour Deep Woods Outdoor Soap. It is 100% natural and non-toxic made from powerful natural oils and herbal extracts. After bathing with this soap your body sweat will produce a nice smell and this smell repels away the mosquitoes. This soap is a must while camping outdoors and is suitable for any skin type. Another positive feature of this soap is that it does not cause any allergy to your skin and moisturizes your skin.
MOSQUITO-REPELLENT CLOTHING Your choice of clothing also plays a major part in protecting yourself from mosquitoes inside the house. To effectively avoid mosquitoes, your clothing should cover all parts of your skin from head to toe. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants will protect you from mosquito bites both indoors and outdoors. Avoid wearing black or other dark colors like dark blue, red and green as dark clothing especially in warm weather keeps your body warm. Mosquitoes are attracted to warm bodies.
Avoid wearing any perfumes, as mosquitoes are attracted to scents mixed with the sweat from our bodies. If you consume food with a lot of garlic content then your sweat also smells like garlic. The smell of garlic deters mosquitoes from homes and keeps them at bay.
DIY Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Out of the House Around your home, you can use silicone caulk or screen patches can be used to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home. Ensure any screens do not have holes or tears and use weather stripping products to seal door gaps, especially under the doors. Insect-proofing your home is an important step to reduce the access of mosquitoes.
If you have mosquitoes in your home, a handy, cost effective tip to remove them is to take a small bowl filled with water and add one camphor tablet (10 grams) to it. Place the bowl in a corner of the room to avoid anyone standing in it and you will find the mosquitoes will immediately fly away. For larger sized rooms, crush the camphor slightly before diluting it with water. You need to repeat this process every 2 days or the effect of the camphor may fade away. The same water can be used to wipe the floor of your house because it is a powerful disinfectant. Ensure you keep the bowl away from the reach of children. Camphor has the longest mosquito repellent activity than any other natural products.
Keep the surrounding areas of your home clean and remove any objects, which may contain water, as this will become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Pests Which Are Common & Dangerous
Today the Pest is becoming a menace for many organizations as it damages their stocks and also causing many diseases.
You can find the unwanted pests anywhere in Hotels, Airports, Railways, Offices, Residential colonies etc. People try a lot to control rodents, cockroaches, wood borer, termites, yellow jackets, honey bees, wasp, bed bugs, rats etc. But most of the time they failed to control them as they have a lack of knowledge about them.
To get rid of these pests everybody should have a proper knowledge of these pests and a solution to get rid of them. Following are the pests which have become very common but are very dangerous:
Mosquitoes
A small mosquito can bite us anytime, anywhere and make us seriously ill. There are different species of mosquitoes in different areas. These mosquitoes spread many diseases rapidly through many viruses and parasites. Malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, filariasis and zika are some of them. Mosquitoes grow and bite very fast. Mosquitoes are also dangerous because their population grows very fast and they can spread the diseases by biting dozens, not one or two at a time. Female mosquitoes are older than males. Only female mosquitoes suck the blood of humans or other organisms.
Spraying mosquito repellents at places where the probability of their breeding or their presence is there once a week may help.
Bedbugs
Bedbugs are small parasites that thrive on beds and mattresses. They are reddish-brown and flattened. These parasites live by drinking the blood of humans. A female bedbug lays two hundred to four hundred eggs throughout her lifetime. They can transmit Trypanosoma cruzi.
How bed bugs flourish?
Bedbug is an insect that grows in dirt. For many days, they thrive due to not showing sunlight to the bed, due to dampness and dirt. For this, it is important to keep the bed showing sunlight from time to time or Spray Pyrethrins at these places once in a year.
Rats
Rats in the house or anywhere is a big disaster. They do not leave any household items; they destroy most of the things. Their bite is serious and can be infectious or cause a condition called rat-bite fever.
Use of many rodent controlling chemicals like Chlorophacinone, Brodifacoum, and Bromethalin not only kills them but also keep them away from our house.
House flies
As the weather changes, the environment around us will also change. Wet and dirt in the house, water filled pits, garbage lying uncovered and mud accumulated in the corners of the house. It is important to have a look at these also because these are the places where insects start to flourish. In which the most annoying are flies. They first sit on the garbage outside the house, then on our food and drinks. Then diseases start which sometimes prove fatal.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches can also cause allergic problems. Due to this, you start getting allergic to skin rashes, sneezing, watery eyes, etc. This is due to the saliva coming out of the cockroach's mouth. Cockroaches feed on dead plants, animals, bowel movements, soap, dirty paper, any kind of fruit or vegetable peels etc. And they spread the infection by contaminating food with hair, eggs and dead skin. They cause many diseases Salmonellosis, Typhoid Fever, Cholera, Gastroenteritis, Dysentery, Leprosy, and Plague.
To Kill the pests mentioned above use of pesticides is mostly recommended to get quick results. A pesticide is a substance or mixture of chemical substances which is used to control harmful pests. Pesticides are into different categories based on their use such as fungicides, pesticides or weedicides etc. Pesticides are widely used in India to control the infection and spread of diseases.
There are many companies nowadays those are using various Environment friendly pesticides to kill the pests. Central Warehousing Corporation are one the of the best company providing professional pest control services.

Why you shouldn't salt a leech that's sucking your blood
The sight of a swollen, slimy leech clamped to your skin sucking away at your blood may elicit a wave of panic and disgust. But resist the feeling of wanting to pour salt on it, as folk wisdom recommends, because that could cause the leech to vomit into the wound, causing unnecessary health risks, suggest scientists behind a new exhibition on bloodsucking animals.
Sebastian Kvist, guardian of worms, and Doug Currie, senior keeper of science at the Royal Ontario Museum, are the creators of Bloodsuckers, which opens at the Toronto museum Saturday. The interactive exhibition, which runs until March 22, 2020, includes better guidance for how to remove leeches and ticks.
It also features live parts and explores the qualities of bloodsucking animals, their use in medicine, and their appearances in stories through the years.
But why wait for the display?
Kvist and Currie shared with CBC News some things you need to know about bloodsucking animals, from leeches to ticks to vampire-related moths and ferocious fish known for swimming up people's sex organs.
Kvist says that when leeches get stressed while feeding, they can vomit some of the blood back into the open wound.
"It'll bring with it few bacteria, frequently, and so you can get a minor infection from it," he says.
"A really good way of stressing a leech is pouring salt or lemon on it or burning it with a cigarette butt, so we tell people not to do that anymore."
Instead, he recommends using a fingernail or a credit card to break the seal between the leech's mouth and your skin quickly, "so it doesn't have time to disgorge blood."
Another option is to wait until the leech is done feeding so it will fall off on its own. That takes about 30 or 45 minutes. Kvist cautions, however, that because leeches' saliva contain powerful blood thinners that can cause you to bleed slowly for longer than usual — up to 36 hours.
Because leeches are slow eaters, they are pretty careful about finding a nice spot to feed where they won't be disturbed, Kvist says.
"It tries to cuddle in maybe between toes or any kind of hole on your body — groins or armpits and stuff like that are what they frequently like."
The ROM exhibition also features live examples of another bloodsucker with a reputation for going for the groin. The candiru, which is also known as the toothpick fish or vampire fish of the Amazon River feeds on blood from fish gills, which it locates by getting close to vapour that the gills expel, Kvist says.
Vapour is also a segment of human urine, which may be why doctors have reported the fish being found lodged inside human tubes.
Leeches are not known to transmit any infections to humans. Nor are black flies.
One key feature of bloodsucking animals that can transmit infections is that they have multiple blood meals over their lives, says Currie.
That includes ticks, which can carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and tick insensibility.
"The good news is it takes 24 to 48 hours [of sucking on your blood] before they have the ability to transmit a disease," Currie says. If you remove them before that, you're probably fine.
That's because they're very slow feeders. It takes them weeks or days to complete a blood meal of up to 600 times their body mass.
"It's really thrilling. They can be quite disgusting looking," Currie says.
The other needed thing for disease transmission is that the germs that cause the disease must be able to survive local conditions.
Mosquitoes can carry West Nile and Eastern horse-related dangerous brain disease in Canada but are apparently capable of carrying a wider range of illnesses, such as Dengue fever. It's just that the germs that cause those bugs can't survive our current climate, Currie says.
"The concern is as the climate warms, and [the] disease agent works its way north, there is the possible happening of some of our local mosquitoes to transmit it."
Many blood-feeders are key parts of the food web.
With black flies, while the adult females may feed on larger animals like us, the larvae are a sufficient food for other sea animals, Currie says: "And so without them we certainly wouldn't have the fish that we'd like to go fishing for feeds waterfowl and plays a really important role in our northern communities."
Obviously, leeches have been important in medicine - they're still used to relieve blood obstruction after surgery to reattach fingers and toes, and their powerful blood thinners were key to making the first human organ medical treatment possible in 1921, Kvist says.
In general, he says the alterations of blood-sucking animals are biologically-related excellent.
"I think that the animals being able to take your blood — your very life force — without you knowing it or without you seeing it is quite dramatic."
Currie hopes the exhibition will give people the information they need to live "in harmony" with bloodsuckers.
"I don't think we're going to get anyone to love bloodsuckers any more than they already do, but I think what we do want to inform the public about is they are interested in their own right," he says.
"They are important elements of communities in which they live, and really they have spurred us in a lot of ways through art and culture."

How To Prevent Mosquito Bites While Hiking
Mosquitos are familiar foes for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. Whether your adventures involve hiking, cycling, camping or kayaking, you’ve surely spent a night or two swatting at these buzzing pests and coating yourself with itch-relieving creams. But while many consider mosquitos a fact of outdoor life, you don’t have to let them ruin your trip. In fact, there are a number of things you can do to keep these infuriating insects at bay and reduce the number of welts covering your body. Below, we’ll explain some of the best ways to avoid their attention, actively repel the bugs and even kill a few of the bloodsuckers so they can’t bother you anymore.
Know Your Enemy: Basic Mosquito Facts
Although most people think of mosquitos as a single entity, scientists have identified about 3,000 species worldwide. But don’t panic; only a handful of these seem to enjoy feasting on human blood and cause serious problems for people. Mosquitos of the following three genera (groups biologists use to categorize different species) are the most notable pests of people:
Anopheles — Active from dusk to dawn, Anopheles mosquitos frequently feed on people, often enter dwellings (including tents) to feed and are capable of transmitting the malaria parasite. Anopheles mosquitos are most common in the tropics, but they are also found in temperate areas.
Culex — Culex mosquitos are found worldwide, and they frequently live around urban and suburban areas. They can transmit a number of important diseases, including West Nile Virus and Japanese encephalitis, among others. Culex mosquitos may bite during the day or the night.
Aedes – Formerly restricted to the tropics, Aedes mosquitos can now be found all over the world. Aedes mosquitos are very important disease vectors, who can transmit filariasis (elephantiasis), yellow fever, Dengue fever, Zika and Aedes mosquitos only bite during the daytime.
Although there is some variation between species, most mosquitos exhibit a relatively similar lifecycle. Adult females produce eggs after feeding on the blood of another animal (adult males do not bite, and generally feed on nectar). Eggs are usually deposited in a bit of stagnant water, but some species prefer laying eggs in creeks or streams. The young larvae hatch from the eggs and wiggle about in the water, feeding on various organic particles found in the water. Eventually, the larvae pupate, before becoming adults soon thereafter.
Finding Food: How Do Mosquitos Find You In The Forest?
Mosquitos often appear to have a supernatural ability to find people. Even in the worst weather or the dark of night, they can often find people to feast upon with little trouble. Of course, finding food sources is incredibly important for mosquitos, so they’ve evolved a number of different mechanisms for tracking you down while you trek through the wilds. Some of the primary ways by which mosquitos locate you include:
Seeking Out The Bacteria On Your Skin
The human body is covered in billions of individual bacteria, and, like all other living things, these bacteria feed on, metabolize and excrete various substances while going about their lives. The vast majority of these bacteria are harmless to humans, and we don’t even notice they are there. But many mosquito species have developed the ability to “smell” these bacteria – specifically the waste products they excrete. This allows them to track their human victims, even in complete darkness.
Note that the bacterial ecosystems living on human skin vary slightly from one person to the next. A given bacteria may be quite common on your skin, while a different species of bacteria coats your hiking partner. These differences in bacterial populations cause some people to be more attractive to mosquitos than others are. This is why you may spend an entire hiking trip slapping mosquitos on your skin, while your companion goes relatively unbothered by the bugs.
Searching For The Chemical Compounds Produced By Your Skin
The bacteria living on your body aren’t the only source of mosquito-attracting odors. Mosquitos can also track you via the chemical compounds your own body produces. In fact, researchers with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln identified 277 different chemicals produced by the human body, which may attract mosquitos. Some of the compounds that appear most attractive to mosquitoes include:
Ammonia
Carboxylic acid
Lactic acid
Carbon dioxide
Octenol
The relative amounts of these chemicals that the body produces varies between individuals as well as with time. For example, sweating will release several of these chemicals in high concentrations, which often causes those who are sweating to suffer more bites than those who stay cool and dry.
Homing In On Your Body Heat And Movements
Mosquitos may rely heavily on chemical cues to find food, but they also use their vision and thermal sensitivity to find people too. Mosquitos have eyes and will use them to home in on your body, but, like almost all other animals, their eyes are most acutely sensitive to movement. This means those who move around more are more likely to be bitten by these blood-sucking bugs. Mosquitos are also able to detect body heat, although scientists have yet to determine how they do so conclusively. However, this means that those with a higher body temperature are at increased risk of suffering bites.
How to Prevent Mosquito Bites
Now that you understand a little more about mosquitos and the ways by which they locate you, it is time to turn your attention to prevention. Because mosquito bites are not only irritating but potentially dangerous, it is always important to avoid bites as much as reasonably possible.
This essentially means embracing some or all of the following strategies:
Wear a Conventional Mosquito Repellent
Conventional mosquito repellents are a good first-line strategy you can employ to prevent bites. Most conventional repellents work by cloaking the chemicals typically emitted by your body so that the mosquitos can’t find you.
There are four primary active ingredients used in various repellents. They include:
DEET – DEET (known to scientists as N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), is a time-tested and highly effective mosquito repellent. Available in a variety of strengths, most authorities recommend using a formulation that is between 30% and 50% DEET. Most DEET-based products are formulated for adults and children over 2 years of age.
IR-3535 – IR-3535 is one of the newer active ingredients used in repellents manufactured for US distribution, but it has been used in European products for many years. IR-3535 helps repel mosquitos, but it also offers some protection against other biting bugs, including ticks and biting flies.
Picaridin – Known to scientists as KBR 3023, Picaridin is often preferred by those with sensitive noses, as it doesn’t have a strong odor like DEET does. Additionally, while it is nearly as effective as DEET, it will not irritate your skin or damage plastics.
Permethrin – Permethrin is not only a repellent; it is also a pesticide that can kill mosquitoes. But unfortunately, permethrin is too harsh for human skin, and it should not be sprayed on your body like most other repellents are. Instead, permethrin should be applied to your clothing and boots.
No matter which type of repellent you select, it is important to apply skin-safe repellents to every part of your exposed skin. If you are using permethrin or another repellent designed for clothing, you’ll want to ensure the entire garment is coated. Always be sure to reapply skin-safe repellents frequently, as they lose their efficacy over time. This is especially important if you sweat heavily, get caught in a downpour or go for a swim. Additionally, make sure you apply them after you apply sunscreen for the best results.
All-Natural Solutions
Despite claims to the contrary, the active ingredients in most repellents have been proved to be quite safe. However, some outdoor enthusiasts are more interested in naturally occurring mosquito repellents, and would rather avoid using DEET and similar ingredients. Fortunately, there are a number of different all-natural substances that can help repel mosquitos. Few are as effective as the conventional repellents listed above, but they can still help reduce the number of bites you’ll suffer while enjoying the great outdoors. Some of the most popular natural repellents include:
Citronella – Citronella oil is a popular mosquito-repelling substance derived from grasses of the genus Cymbopogon. It is generally regarded as safe when used properly and it is about as effective as repellents with low amounts of DEET. Citronella smells nice, and it comes in topical applications as well as impregnated bracelets and candles.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus – Known to scientists as p-Mentane-3,8-diol, oil of lemon eucalyptus is a synthetically produced version of the insect-repelling ingredient found in eucalyptus leaves. It has not yet been approved for children under 3 years of age, but it has been shown as effective as a 10% to 20% DEET solution.
Catnip Oil – Catnip is a perennial herb that contains an essential oil called Nepetalactone. While most commonly known as a substance that drives cats wild, nepetalactone is also a powerful mosquito and fly repellent. In fact, a 2001 study found that nepetalactone is approximately 10 times as effective as DEET at repelling mosquitos.
Use Clothing To Shield Your Skin
While mosquitos can occasionally penetrate light-weight clothing with their needle-like mouths, clothing with any thickness at all will generally protect you from their probing proboscises. Just try to incorporate the following tips in your clothing purchases and choices to enjoy the most protection possible:
Wear long sleeves and long pants. Simply covering your skin will help you avoid many bites, so be sure to wear long sleeves and long pants when battling blood-sucking bugs. Just be sure to select lightweight clothing, so you can still remain cool in the summer heat.
Wear a light-weight and loose outer layer. A loose outer layer of clothing (such as a windbreaker) will help prevent the mosquitos from biting through your clothes and still help to keep your body temperature low, which will provide further protection from the insects.
Use a bandana to shield your neck. Mosquitos are often attracted to your neck and the area behind your ears, so consider covering these areas with a lightweight bandana or kerchief. This will help reduce the number of volatile compounds emerging from your skin and provide a bit of a protective barrier.
Opt for light-colored clothing. Light colors, including everything from white to khaki to yellow, tend to repel mosquitos and other insects, while dark colors often attract them. Light colors will also keep your body temperature lower, which will offer further protection.
Treat your clothing with permethrin. Permethrin-based clothing treatments are available in most outdoor and sporting goods stores, and they can help reduce the number of insects buzzing around your body all day long. Most permethrin treatments will last for a week or two, which means you won’t have to reapply the repellent very often.
Avoid Mosquito-Friendly Locations
You can’t completely avoid mosquitos, as they travel far and wide in an attempt to secure food. However, you can certainly avoid the majority of the bugs by avoiding places where they tend to congregate. This essentially means you’ll want to:
Avoid damp, low-lying places. Mosquitoes typically congregate around stagnant water bodies and wetlands to mate and deposit their eggs, so try to take the high ground whenever possible. Additionally, you should always try to set up campsites at least 100 yards away from water sources.
Try to hike along wind-swept cliffs and ridges. Mosquitos try as best they can to avoid winds, as they get blown around pretty easily. Accordingly, you can reduce the number of mosquitos biting you by planning hikes so that they traverse elevated, windy locations.
Stay away from the shade. While you don’t want to give yourself heat stroke by walking under the scorching summer sun, you can avoid mosquitos by staying in the sun as much as possible. Mosquitos can desiccate and overheat if they hang out in the sun for too long, so they tend to stick to shady places as much as possible.
When All Else Fails, Use A Mosquito Net
Although they are of little use while you are moving, mosquito nets are the gold-standard for bite prevention. Lightweight, affordable and easy to use, mosquito nets should be considered mandatory equipment for any hikers who are traveling through mosquito-infested lands. Mosquito nets allow breezes to penetrate, yet the holes in the net are small enough to prevent mosquitos from passing through. However, mosquitos can bite through these nets, so always avoid wrapping them tightly around your skin. Instead, set them up like a secondary tent.
Eradicating Mosquitoes
Unfortunately, there isn’t really a time- or cost-effective way of eliminating the mosquitos around you while hiking through the forest. Professional mosquito-control companies kill the bugs by the bushel, but they utilize potentially dangerous chemicals to do so. Obviously, this isn’t a good strategy for those who are trying to enjoy the natural world in all of its beauty. Other companies rely on mosquito traps to lure and then ensnare mosquitos, but this isn’t practical for hikers either.
Bug zappers are a popular tool used to kill the mosquitos living near back porches and swimming pools, but they aren’t of any practical use in the forest. In fact, bug zappers aren’t that effective anyway, as they usually kill more harmless and beneficial insects than mosquitos. You can try to pluck mosquitos from the air and smash them between your fingers, but this is hardly efficient. Plus, you may expose yourself to blood-borne diseases in the process, should you capture a mosquito that just feasted on a sick person. Smacking them with an improvised fly swatter is a better idea, but it isn’t likely to produce tangible results.
In general, it is usually better to spend your time and effort trying to avoid mosquitos than it is trying to kill them. However, there is one exception to this: It does make sense to kill individual mosquitos who manage to enter your tent. If you are reasonably careful about closing the tent fly when you enter or exit, the overall number of mosquitos inside your tent will remain low. And while you can’t very well kill all the mosquitos in the forest, you probably can eradicate a small number of mosquitos who access your tent. This will help you avoid several bites and get a better night’s sleep too.
***
Mosquitos are certainly infuriating, and they can make you miserable while you are trying to get some rest and relaxation in the natural world. However, by embracing the tips and suggestions listed above, you’ll surely avoid many bites and have a better time on your next hike.

Zika Virus – Everything You Need To Know About It
Zika Situation in Early 2017
After ranking as the top health concern of 2016, the Zika virus has returned worldwide in early months of 2017, including the USA. According to the International SOS’s Zika News, three newest cases of Zika infections have been found in Singapore since 21st April, which leads to a total of 21 cases in this country in this year. In the USA, there has been a total of 10 cases in Texas and 30 cases in Florida since 1st January 2017.
This mosquito-borne illness was first detected in the Zika Forest in the central Africa in 1947. Nowadays it’s unable to be cured or prevented with a vaccine, which makes it extremely dangerous to people, especially pregnant women. To date, its global risk assessment and vigilance remains high.
How Does Zika Spread?
Through Mosquito Bites
Two mosquito species called Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus are the primary pathogens of Zika. These mosquitoes are active mostly during the day, but they can also bite people at night. They are the same pathogen of dengue and chikungunya viruses.
The females need to feed on blood to lay eggs. As they suck the blood of infected patients, they become infected themselves and have the likelihood of transmitting the virus to other people through bites. Although Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus usually inhabit in tropical or subtropical areas, they’re also found in the USA.
Here is the map estimating the potential range of them in the USA.
Via: www.cdc.gov
Through Sex
A man or a woman, who carries the Zika virus, can transmit the virus to his or her sexual partner, even if this infected person does not develop symptoms at the time. Scientists also found that the Zika virus stays in semen longer than in other body fluids, including vaginal discharge, urine and blood. Therefore, the infected men are more potentially dangerous than infected women.
In addition, keep in mind that whether the sex is vaginal, anal, oral or even the sharing of sex toys, there is no exception of safety.
From a Pregnant Woman to Her Fetus
There is a full range of evidence that a pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus during pregnancy and childbirth. This is what scientists call the mother-to-child transmission. Fortunately, there are no reports that a newborn can get Zika virus through breastfeeding.
Through Blood Transfusion
This transmission path is very likely but not surely confirmed. To date, there are no reports of getting Zika virus through blood transfusion transmission in the USA. However, in April 2016, two first cases in Brazil are detected. During the French Polynesian outbreak, the virus was found in few blood donors.
Chain of events explains how Zika spreads (Via: www.cdc.gov)
Why Is Zika Too Dangerous to Pregnant Women?
How Does It Affect the Mom’s Fetus?
Many studies have proven that a pregnant woman, who is already infected with Zika virus, even one without symptoms, can pass the virus to her developing fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth. Especially, this transmission can happen in all stages of pregnancy.
The problem will be worst in the first trimester of pregnancy when pregnant signs have not shown up clearly yet. That’s because many crucial developments of fetus take place during this period, including the starting developing structures (head, spine, arms and legs) and organs (heart, intestines and lungs) of the baby’s body.
As the virus crosses the placental barrier, it comes with dangerous side effects and appears to be associated with major grave outcomes, such as uteroplacental vascular insufficiency, fetal growth restriction, neurological system trauma and even fetal death.
How Does It Affect the Infant?
Babies whose moms are infected with Zika during pregnancy have great likelihood of developing birth defects. Among them, the most common and serious defect is microcephaly which is a severe neurological condition in which babies are born with a small head leading to a small brain.
Other serious birth defects include impaired growth, hearing loss, eye problems, Guillain-Barré syndrome and even stillbirth.
How Do You Know a Pregnant Woman Infected with Zika?
There is no evidence that pregnant women are more susceptible to getting Zika or suffering from more severe illness. So, everyone who is infected with Zika has the same symptoms. Many have mild symptoms, while others might not show anything. In fact, only 20 percent of patients end up exhibiting symptoms.
Via: www.cdc.gov
In general, common symptoms of Zika are low-grade fever, red rash, red eyes, headache, joint pain and muscle pain. These symptoms can last from two to seven days, and they often don’t show up right away. For this reason, many patients don’t realize that they have been infected and don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital. Luckily, Zika rarely kills people.
If you want to see how a 19-week pregnant woman protects herself and her baby from Zika, you can take a look this video below.
youtube
What Should You Do If You’re Suspicious about Being Infected with Zika?
To date, there is no vaccine or specific medicine against Zika. Currently, the Themis Bioscience is testing one called MV-ZIKA-101 in 48 healthy volunteers to check the safety, immune response and optimal dose. However, it’s just a clinical trial like many before, and the ultimate version of the vaccine is predicted to take years under development.
Testing for Zika
To diagnose Zika, a doctor will first ask about any symptom as well as recent travels and sexual activities, in short, any path of transmission that Zika virus can pass from one person to others. After that, a blood, semen or urine test will be carried to confirm the Zika infection. It’s important to make sure you receive your Zika test results even if you are feeling better.
Treating the Symptoms
At present, there are no treatments for Zika. You can only treat its symptoms. Here is what you should know if you’re diagnosed with Zika:
Get plenty of rest to help the body naturally combat the infection
Drink adequate fluids (water, milk, smoothies) to avoid dehydration.
Take medicines (acetaminophen, paracetamol) to relieve fever and pain.
If you’re taking a medicine for another medical condition, consult your doctor before taking any extra medication.
Don’t take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
How Do You Prevent Zika?
Since people have not found a vaccine to prevent Zika, keeping yourself and your family from mosquitoes is the only way to avoid Zika. Here are some tips for you to do that:
Use Insect Repellents
Choosing the right products of insect repellents is very important. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), EPA-registered insect repellents that have active ingredients, such as DEET, IR 3535, lemon eucalyptus, 2-undecanone, para-menthane-diol and picaridin, are safe and effective to use.
A study published in the Parasties and Vectors journal found no signs of negative side effect of DEET. Pregnant and nursing women can use it without any risk. On the other hand, repellents that contain citronella oil, peppermint oil, geranium oil or cedar oil are not recommended by the CDC.
No matter which insect repellents you use, you should always follow the instruction manual. You have to take a close look at the cautions that the company lists in the manual. You can also find brief instructions on the label. For examples:
Apply insect repellents after sunscreen.
Don’t use repellents on babies less than 2 months old.
Don’t use lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol on babies less than 3 years old.
Don’t apply repellent under clothes because it might not evaporate and gather on the fabric as a result. But you can apply it over clothes.
Don’t apply repellent on cuts or wounds.
Removing Standing Water
Removing standing water is the key to make sure mosquitoes don’t have places to breed and lay eggs. Aedes mostly feed during the day and tend to fly into houses for shade, especially on sunny days when the temperature rises to about 50-60oF. Briefly, they live very close to us.
The greater the population of them in your living area, the greater the chance they spread disease. Just one tablespoon of water can become an ideal ground for mosquitoes to breed and produce up to 300 eggs. So, make sure you remove any item throughout and around the house that can collect water, such as flower pots, buckets, bottles or old tires.
If you have a pool, you don’t need to drain it. Just add a small amount of chlorine into the water to deter mosquitoes.
Stay in Places with Air-Conditioning or Window Screens
Instead of opening windows and doors, it’s sometimes necessary to close them and stay in places featured with electric fans, air conditioners or window screens. This way, you can keep mosquitoes from entering your house. Make sure there are no holes or gaps in the screens.
Sleep with a Mosquito Net
A mosquito net is designed to protect you from mosquito’s bites while sleeping. Also, make sure you install it in a proper way so that it provides the full coverage all the way around your bed. For an extra layer of protection, you can treat your net with permethrin.
Cover Your Skin with Clothes
It’s a shortcoming if you forget to protect your own body by covering as much of your skin as possible. Simply wear long pants, long-sleeves shirts, socks and closed-toe shoes. Also, don’t forget to cover your face and head with a face mask and a hat when you’re in most mosquito-infested areas. If needed, treat your clothes with permethrin for additional protection.
Use Protection When You Have Sex
If you’re a man, wear a condom every time you have sex. If you’re a woman, either wear a dental dam or remind your partner to wear a condom even if he seems healthy. Keep in mind that 80 percent of infected patients does not show symptoms of Zika. Also, remember that Zika virus can be transmitted through any sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, oral sex and even the sharing of sex toys.
Travel Smartly
Don’t travel to areas or countries with the high risk of Zika virus transmission if you don’t need to do that. If you already booked the ticket, and then the virus suddenly outbreak in where you plan to arrive, you might consider postponing the trip. In the USA, major airlines, including American, United, and Delta Airlines, allow qualified passengers to re-book their trips without cancellation fees. In case you must travel to an affected area, follow the prevention recommendations strictly.
For the world map of areas with risk of Zika, check here.
What Should You Do If You’re Caring for a Person with Zika?
Follow the following steps if you want to keep safe when contact with a Zika-infected person:
Wash hands with soap and water immediately after providing care.
Don’t touch any body’s fluid of the patient or surface with these fluids on it.
Wash your hands and clothes (with detergent) immediately if they get any body’s fluid of the patient.
Disinfectant the patient’s environment (bed, chair, etc.) every day using household cleaners.
Conclusion
To update all the information and newest news about Zika, you can check the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website which is one of the best online resources for various diseases, including Zika. No matter what you do, you should always be aware of preventing you and your family from Zika. If you have any symptom related to Zika, you have to isolate yourself from other family’s members and see your doctor as soon as possible.

My favourite movies
This list will be a collection of lists because I went through my hard drive and had individually picked out movies that I’ve loved through the years. I have 68 that all impact me in one way or the other but I can’t put all 68 here so I’ve (attempted to) categorise these. Enjoy~
UPDATE: Originally, this was supposed to be a list of lists of my favourite movies because I categorised the entire 68 movies that made the cut but as I wrote the first list, I kind of rambled too much that I can’t put all the lists in so I’ve just put the Top 10. Sorry.
MOVIES I LOVED, LOVE, WILL LOVE TILL THE END OF TIME (these are my ‘i’m dying, let me watch this now. LIKE RIGHT NOW’ movies)
1. The Sound of Music (1965)
I don’t think you understand how much I love this movie. I’ve watched this literally 100+ times. Ive memorised the whole movie by heart and can follow the dialogue. I know too many facts about this movie and I’ve planned my dream house by the layout of the Von Trapp villa. It’s ridiculous. I can honestly say that I would never get tired watching this movie. I love it. It’s too beautiful.
2. The Parent Trap (1998)
Like The Sound of Music, I’ve watched this too much for my own benefit. If you’ve watched this, you know that this is a great movie. It’s just so fun and how I would’ve wanted my childhood to be (minus the divorced parents and lost identical twin). I actually tried to learn the English accent only because I watched this movie. I’m still no good.
3. Gravity (2013)
I think I have discussed why I love this movie in a previous post (An unimportant change). But yes. I love this movie. Although I must admit, this isn’t a “Must Watch Everyday”, but this is a movie that you watch once and it just completely sucks you into this dark void. Maybe just me. I think this movie just made me think of how insignificant we are in this world yet how we should value of lives... or something like that. I don’t know. I just love this.
4. The Lake House (2006)
I know a lot of people won’t like this movie. I love it. Your opinions suck (loljk) but we have different likes. This is my second Sandra Bullock favourite movie because Sandy is the best human creature. For me, this is a very sad, slow-paced, have some tea or coffee, watch on a rainy day and snuggle in a blanket type movie. This is my chill movie basically and it calms me down almost. I don’t exactly know why I love this so much... I just do. BONUS: I love the soundtrack too and how it’s so mellow.
5. Ever After (1998)
This is my favourite Cinderella reinterpretation ever. I like this more than the Disney version. Oh my God. I love this. I’ve watched this too many times and I just love how the story is told and how it was acted. There were a lot of lines in this movie that I just relate to. Like this (ugh I love this scene(this was the morning after the ball))
Baroness: You are not my problem any more.
Danielle: Is that what I am? Your problem?! I have done everything you’ve ever asked me to do and still you deny me only thing I’ve ever wanted.
B: And what was that?
D: What do you think? You are the only mother I have ever known. Was there a time, even in its smallest measurement, that you loved me at all?
B: How can anyone love a pebble in their shoe?
UUHHHHHHHHH my heart.
It just hurts my heart with how beautiful this movie is. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH.
6. Juno (2007)
Anytime I think about this movie, “All I Want Is You” (the song during the opening sequence) starts playing in my head. The soundtrack is really cool too. I once watched this for 3 consecutive days because I love it too much. It’s just so funny and the humour here is at my standards so I still chuckle when I watch it again. I don’t think this movie will ever grow old for me. Which is why I love it. Juno is like my favourite person. And there’s this scene near the end (you know this) where she’s talking to her dad because she’s confused about everything and I live for the scene. When she says “I just need to know that it’s possible for two people to stay happy together forever” and then J.K. Simmons delivers the perfect response. Ughhghghghg.
7. Mr. Nobody (2009)
This isn’t an ideal choice for me. I honestly don’t know why I enjoyed it. I’ve recommended it to people and they didn’t seem to “get” it or like it or even attempted to finish it (which means they’re dead to me). I will say that it was really tough to follow through because of the time jumps and who Nemo ended up with in the timeline or how he ended up where he is but once I got to the end and the explanation, I got it. It’s just so unique. And I know it’s not for everyone. But I love how I’ve never seen a movie that’s crafted this way and how the premise was “everything is a possibility in the eyes of a child” and you have to decide your future and carry its consequences by yourself. I don’t know really. But please give this movie a shot.
8. One More Chance (2007)
This is a Filipino film. I’m actually quite happy that a Filipino film managed to creep its way into my list because I don’t particularly enjoy Philippine cinema (sorry!) and I only have a select few that I actually like. But this one!!! This movie is just amazing. It’s so heartbreaking and all I wanted to do was side with someone but you can’t because they were both right in their own sense and the movie was just so real. I can’t relate but this is how imagine a lot of complicated relationships are based on what I’ve eavesdropped from people mehehe. Plus, Erik Santos’ song “I’ll Never Go” is just perfect (I’m listening to it right now haha)
9. Les Miserables (2012)
It’s Les Mis. Should I even elaborate? I don’t know anyone who watched it that didn’t like it. I was the fan that followed the movie. From casting until after the Oscars. I even had my friends back home involved with the hype. I watched it with them at school and we all squealed when Anne and Amanda started singing. It’s one of my favourite soundtracks. I’m in love with the musical too. This movie has everything. It is everything.
10. Moulin Rouge! (2001)
I don’t remember when I first watched this and this kills me because I vividly remember watching this when I was little and loved it because there was so much colour and there was A LOT going on. I watched it again when I was in the hospital with the Dengue Fever and I’d like to believe I got better because of it. Like Les Mis, I also love the soundtrack. This movie has my favourite quotes of all time which is “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return”. And this movie I love very much. Both Nicole and Ewan did amazingly in this movie and I loved her singing and the songs and the story and everything about this movie is perfect. Why?
OKAY. THAT’S IT. I may add a few more movies because I haven’t watched ALL the movies in the world for me to make this absolute judgement but these are the 10 that get me through life. :)
