YOOOOO i love that!!!
tw self harm, suicidal ideation/attempts
ok so my concept for this story is that each of the 5 main characters represent one of the 5 stages of grief. preston and esther are the last 2, depression and acceptance respectively.
preston is half irish, half japanese, and he lived in northern california until he was 13 when his little brother peter, who was only 10, was killed. the family moved to southern california after because they couldn’t stand to be in the house anymore.
by that point, preston already had depression, and the death of peter just pushed him over the edge. he became nearly catatonic, he started self-harming. it was after his 3rd attempt at suicide that his parents, knowing he needed more help than they could give him, signed him up for the Hospitalized Apartment Project, where all the main characters live. he was under pretty vigilant watch for his first year, but after he started showing some improvements, he was allowed a little bit more freedom. he tests new anti-depressants while he’s there.
he’s a pretty nice person, but he does succumb to his depressive habits a lot, which makes him kind of hard to get along with sometimes. he loves mysteries and the supernatural, like in a Gravity Falls kind of way. his aesthetic is jean jackets with patches, fingerless gloves, clear gameboy colors, campfires, neon glitching lights, ghost doodles. his love interest and closest friend is nenita, the spirit of bargaining. he’s a nonbinary man, and mostly subscribes to the “gender is weird and confusing and i don’t know how it sits in me, but i’m okay using gendered pronouns” kinda game
esther is pretty opposite. she was the first person in the HAP, when she was 16. she has fibromyalgia and EDS, which is not a fun pair. she uses both a wheelchair or a cane, depending on how she feels each day. she was kicked out of her home by her mother when she came out as lesbian at 15, so the HAP basically saved her life, since she wasn’t getting any treatment during the 6 months she lived on the street.
she’s the grandma friend of the group, partially because she’s the oldest, and partially because her personality is that of a grandmother. she loves knitting and crocheting, tea, jazz music (but like old jazz - like billie holiday). the others go to her for advice a lot, but sometimes they get mad because she’s always trying to look for the positive, and has a hard time living in her negative emotions. she begins a relationship with janie, one of the nurses at the hospital attached to their apartment complex. esther is very smooth when it comes to flirting with other women, which is a fun offset, since janie is incredibly NOT smooth, totally giggly and lame.
she’s the foil for dana, the main character, because dana is still deep in denial, and esther is at the end of her journey of grief. the 2 clash heads a lot, but they all love each other deeply. at some point, her little sister ruthie enters the picture again, and she has to work to rebuild that relationship, and to accept that acceptance isn’t always healthy. it’s okay to be mad, it’s okay to feel those other stages, especially when your life exists in a permanent state of renewed loss.
thank you for the ask!!!! sorry i kinda went off, i just love them
