I was talking with a friend about bridgerton, she's a long time fan read the books and stuff and she was like comparing the books to the Netflix show, particularly Benedict's arc. In the book Benedict marries one of the house staff, it's like a Cinderella story. And my friend was saying that the way they made him on the show, it would not be surprising if instead of his wife being a maid, she ended being a sex worker/courtesan and then people on replies (it was on twitter) were like "oh hell no", "never in a million years etc".
and yesterday someone posted on the black jewels facebook group saying they considered the books a romance, as in being part of the romance genre. to wich I said no and I think I've already talked about this, but that's absolutely a no. the black jewels isn't romance and the conversation about bridgerton just illustrated what I mean perfectly. the romance genre wouldn't be as accepting of most of the character storylines in tbj, hell the fandom itself isn't even very keen on the fact daemon, lucivar and surreal were sex workers, they downplay it all the time exactly because they see the story strictly as a romance and the protagonists not being full of virtue goes against the rule, specially for female characters.
