So we covered Taxonomy in my non-Bio-majors Bio lab today, and I did put up a link on our class page to a site explaining the differences between mammals, reptiles, and birds, because I had in my notes from last semester that there was some confusion. But I was also like, surely that was a one-off, college students know what mammals are.
....had to tell one person that birds are not mammals, had to tell another that insects are not mammals.
I also emphasized that not all birds are herbivores, since some eat insects and others eat meat, but I still had people go "it has a beak, it's an herbivore" like bro? it's a hawk? HAWKS EAT MEAT.
also none of them can spell squirrel. Help.
#teaching#also I kept telling them that stuff in a dichotomous key MUST be characteristics that are visible on the thing that you're looking at#no background knowledge allowed#still had people going 'it's a mammal' or 'it flies'#or for the skulls 'colorful fur'#this lab is one of my favorite to teach and one of my least favorite to grade
