Okay, what are the films you've been watching on youtube? Pls share :)
hey sweetheart!! with pleasure 🌹✨
Once in a while I'll get a phase where I'll watch a collection of random films on youtube, oftentimes without knowing much (if anything) about the plot, so there's a certain hit or miss element to my selection....
Lately I've watched --
The Watermelon Woman (1996) (Romance, Drama, Comedy; LGBT history, racial politics. The mockumentary elements alternating with the "real life" parts gave this such a special feeling. It's constructed extremely delicately and feels very clear, very warm, very intimate, very personal. Yet it's also super thought provoking. I really enjoyed it. (also it's just incredibly impressive to me that the writer/director/editor/star of this film was my age when the film came out, which was my year of birth, but that's just a side note))
The Vampire Lovers (1970) (Horror. unfortunately has been age restricted which always annoys me BUT - based on Le Fanu's Carmilla. Gleaming hair and marble-cool, clear pronounciation, tacky sensuality and doll-powdered faces. Very fun. Also I'm fascinated by how they portrayed Carmilla. Many thoughts on monsters as metaphors for lgbt experiences, isolation, heartbreak etc. They could've gone for the evil seductress and they clearly did, of course, but there is more to it and I really love that.)
M (1931) (Murder-Mystery, Thriller. I adore b&w films because of the way they arrange space and darkness, which this one does beautifully imo. Also I really, really enjoyed the way this film transported me back to the time portrayed. It's one of those films everyone always talks about when talking about classics and tbh I'm glad I gave it a shot.)
The Stepford Wives (1975) (Horror, themes of body autonomy and gender politics. Beautifully aranged, great acting, both nice to look at visually and thrilling to watch. I adore it and I'm SO happy to have found it on youtube. Definitely will continue to think about it the next few days, especially since I just found out that Ira Levin also wrote Rosemary's Baby.)
as I'm answering this, I'm actively watching Carnival of Souls (1962), which is fun, so far.
I also recently remembered La Jetée (1962) and it's on youtube, too! SiFi (?). Absolutely stunning, poetic, very intense. I think it's best enjoyed late at night with some wine, when reality seems to blur and bleed a little.
~✨🎬✨~
Films on my to-watch list:
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)
Maculin Féminin (1966)
Un Homme qui dort (1974)
Mahogany (1975)
The Scent of Green Papaya (1993)
And I desperately want to watch the live action Nana from 1995 but unfortunately, the only version currently online is without subtitles u,u
~✨🎬✨~
films I always come back to are Suspiria (1977) (Horror) and Kamikaze Girls (2004) (coming of age, fashion, action (it's as wild as it sounds)). The latter gets deleted and reuploaded again regularly, I truly hope this version'll stay up for a while because the quality is very good.
