The way suffering from neglect fucks up your entire life and no one cares when you’re a kid or an adult. I have life lasting health, emotional, and physical issues from this. I have no one to go to and I can’t even leave because I can’t afford to. My mother literally called me her retirement plan a year ago and I cannot afford to move out despite working. I don’t see a way out of this.
#I have ten fucking cavities and a root canal. ANOTHER one after a year and getting four wisdom teeth out.#I’ve paid for all of it and just found out I don’t have insurance :3. my mom just didn’t pay for it because she never goes to the dentist#every job I’ve worked didn’t even HAVE dental <3 and they fought me to not give me insurance for TWO years#this whole time. I could’ve just gone and paid a fee for 10 cavities and now I need a root canal too#my health has tanked#I had a fucking seizure this year#i haven’t been able to work out#I’m sick of everything and there’s no one I can go to or count on#but I have to be here for other people. always.

how do you factor brushing your teeth into the "letting yourself fall asleep while doing stuff" strategy?
Well let's preface this with the fact that I'm kind of a disaster:
I brush my teeth in the morning.
Sometimes I'll brush my teeth right after dinner (and I'm usually finishing dinner at like 10pm) and then I'll be up for another few hours and I just. Like. Try not to sweat it? I probably brush my teeth around 10-12 times a week, which is less than the recommended twice a day but honestly for me is a pretty significant improvement over where I was in, like, 2013. Getting to daily tooth brushing was a significant achievement that I had to start using an activity tracking app for. Washing my face daily is still a struggle. I am *not* great at being what a lot of people seem to consider "normal" or "functional" but I'm getting by and I'm getting better.
Ideally in a perfect world where brushing my teeth wasn't going to mean that I'd be awake for another three hours I'd brush my teeth right before tucking myself into bed in my PJs with the lights off.
But it *is* going to mean that so I brush my teeth and floss when it's not going to impact that and fall asleep in a bright room with my glasses and jeans on.
And TBH it's working out. I've got pretty fucky teeth anyway (double row of wisdom teeth, teeth when i was a couple weeks old, had all my adult teeth by the time I was seven, have had something like eight root canals and have a shitload of crowns) so it's hard to say if this has had an impact on my dental health (had a lot of those crowns and root canals when I was brushing and flossing twice daily because my parents made me as a kid) but since my last "i haven't been to the dentist in nine years and my damaged tooth broke in half during the first month of covid" fiasco I've been brushing every morning and flossing mostly every morning and getting in extra brushing and flossing when I can, I haven't had any further cavities or other issues past treating what nine years of neglect did (it's been 3 years of being pretty okay and they don't tell me that i need to floss more at the dentist so i consider that a success).
At one point a dentist told me that plaque buildup starts after about 24 hours of the bacteria in your mouth being undisturbed and that the 2x daily recommendation is to make sure you don't go 24 hours without shaking the little fuckers up. I don't actually know if that's accurate, but it has helped me to be more regular about brushing my teeth (look; depression and adhd is a bad combo and there were some rough years there) and also helped me to be more regular about brushing my dog's teeth.
So anyway please don't follow my example please do what your dentist tells you to do but also yeah if you're having sleep issues it may be more important for you to get sleep than to get up and brush your teeth right away. Brush in the mornings for sure, try to do it every day, use a toothpaste with fluoride and floss or use a waterpik to get below the gumline; then try to get in another brushing when you can, ideally at least one other time a day.
But you don't have to brush exactly twelve hours apart or right before you go to bed, and if you're eating and drinking after you brush your teeth but before you go to bed it isn't ideal but it also isn't a disaster.

Tw: phobias, dentist
I'm currently considering the sheer annoyance that comes with developing a phobia later in life.
Like, I was able to do this Thing for years without issue, and now I suddenly can't anymore? What kind of nonsense is this?
It's the dentist, in my case. For 30 years I had no issue whatsoever going to the dentist, not even a hint of nervousness or apprehension. Which was a good thing, as I have problem teeth (prone to cavities and refusing to grow straight) and needed a LOT of dental work over the years. I've had more cavities filled than I can count, had three different kinds of braces in my early teens (including the external kind, fun times), still have retainers (which have broken twice so far), had a root canal treatment once and even had two of my wisdom teeth removed (I only have/had three and the third refuses to descend, but that also means it doesn't cause issues... yet). No problem at all. Easy peasy lemon sqeezy.
And now I can't even look up some info on my dentist's web page without having the worst panic attack in years? What the flippin' flip?
I've had arachnophobia (fear of spiders) all my life, never really put any thought into it, it was just a part of me. But this, this is something different. It's just happening and getting worse, and yeah there's anxiety and tears and stress.
But it's also just so, so annoying!!! It's just the dentist! The dentist is nice, the dentist is there to help you, going to the dentist has never been a problem ever, and now suddenly it is? This is just stupid!
And the worst part is, it's not even anyones fault. Nobody did anything wrong, The Incident was just sheer dumb luck, but it somehow ruined everything.
(I needed yet another cavity filled about two years ago, and for some reason the anesthetic stopped working mid-procedure. They gave me two more doses, which didn't make any difference, and couldn't give me anymore because, you know, health concerns. But they had to finish the filling, they couldn't send me home with a gaping hole in my tooth. Everyone was so nice and apologetic, but that didn't help because it hurt. So. Bad. I was literally screaming in the chair [think I traumatized a few people in the waiting room that day]. Filling did get finished and I was sent home with so many apologies, and I really don't hold it against the dentist or anyone else, or even dentists in general. But, as is usually the case with me, there was a delayed reaction.)
And now I apparently have a phobia of the dentist. I get tense before my appointments, I've had meltdowns in The Chair because everything about the dentist is now triggering, I've even nearly hit the poor dentist, who is a very nice woman and didn't deserve that. because she startled me with a piece of equipment I was unfamiliar with (she didn't know that, fight or flight response kicked in). Last time the dental hygienist couldn't finish cleaning my teeth because I couldn't take it anymore and had a panic attack. And I've already re-scheduled my latest periodical check-up twice because the thought of going gives me such bad anxiety.
I never used to be like this, and I can't stand it! I wonder if this is how Mum felt after she developed claustrophobia?
(Yes, I know I need to deal with this. I've discussed it with my counselor and we're looking into options. There's apparently a specialized dentist/therapist sort of person at the local hospital that she accompanies another client to that might be able to help. I've already switched dentists when I moved back to my hometown, so that's not the solution.)
I just needed to vent about my annoyance with the situation. I never realized that particular emotion could be involved with developing a phobia.

Since starting my journey of self care back in like, 2020, I finally have all my cavities fixed! Yes, it took 4 years to fix like, 13-15 cavities (which also included 1 root canal, 4 wisdom teeth removal, plus a regular tooth extraction.)
Because dental insurance has a yearly max and dental work is expensive.
I still need at least 1 crown, if not 2, but they will have to wait until next year.
You may ask how I got so bad. Well, poor dental hygine as a kid, worse as a teen, very rare trips to the dentist who only berated me ao I had anxiety going back.
It took the work of two amazing dentists who did their best *not* to lecture me when giving tips about dental care. And also my new dentist has a neat suction dam thing so I don't have to taste the bits of tooth, blood, and whatever else.
Also, headphones with music and they gave me stress balls to hold/play with.
My mouth is still fucked up and I dislike my smile, but short of having facial reconstruction where they break my lower jaw and my maxilla to fix the mismatched alignment (no, braces aren't gonna cut this overbite), that ain't going to change.
But I wanted to be healthy, not beautiful. One does not equal the other.

Reblogging again to add that if brushing with a toothbrush is a sensory nightmare for you, one thing I recommend to my neurospicy patients ALL the time is to wipe your teeth with a wet washcloth. The goal is to get all that plaque off your teeth with some type of friction, whether that's with a toothbrush or a washcloth. And then you can swish with some fluoride mouthwash
Can't stand minty flavors? No shame in using kids toothpaste! They make all kinds of fun flavors like birthday cake and chocolate and watermelon and bubble gum! If you can, get some that has fluoride in it, but if you can't find a flavor that works for you that also has fluoride in it, make sure you're using a fluoride mouthwash. And again, those come in kid friendly fruity flavors as well as bubble gum!
My job is to educate parents on how to take care of their kids teeth and I'm the last person to judge because I'm a neurospicy AuDHD walking disaster with practically zero spoons most days. But the one thing my executive dysfunction hasn't affected is my need to brush my teeth. It's 1000% a half assed 30-45 second brush but it's a brush! Twice a day! I don't floss and I have to go to the dentist every 3 months because my gums are kind of a mess. But I haven't had any cavities since I was like 18 and I've never needed a root canal or extractions other than my wisdom teeth when I was 20
to all the depressed teens out there not brushing your teeth FUCKING BRUSH THEM i promise you i promise you i promise you i promise you look at me i promise you my heart my liver my lungs that you’re gonna thank yourself later. Just once a day even. Please
#dental health#dental psa#more info about dental health#this is literally what i do for a living#please take this to heart#i totally understand the struggle#but ya gotta keep those teeth as clean as you possibly can#your future self will thank you#i promise

Comprehensive Dental Care at Stringham Dentistry: Expert Tooth Removal and Gum Disease Treatment in Edmonton, AB
Dental health is a critical part of maintaining overall well-being. Whether it’s routine care, restorative procedures, or specialized treatments, having access to professional dental services is essential. Stringham Dentistry, located in Edmonton, AB, is a leading dental clinic dedicated to providing exceptional care to all of its patients. Among the most sought-after services at Stringham Dentistry are Tooth Removal Edmonton AB and gum disease treatment, both of which are essential components of maintaining a healthy smile.
In this article, we will explore the importance of tooth removal and gum disease treatment, the benefits of seeking these services at Stringham Dentistry, and why the clinic stands out as a top choice for patients in Edmonton, AB.
The Importance of Tooth Removal in Edmonton, AB
Tooth removal, also known as tooth extraction, is a common dental procedure performed for various reasons. At Stringham Dentistry, tooth removal in Edmonton, AB is carried out by skilled professionals who prioritize patient comfort and care. While no one wants to lose a tooth, certain situations may require extraction to maintain the health of your mouth.
Some of the most common reasons for tooth removal include:
Severe Tooth Decay: When a cavity has progressed too far and cannot be restored with a filling, crown, or root canal, tooth extraction may be necessary to prevent further infection.
Infected Teeth: If a tooth becomes infected and cannot be saved through root canal therapy or antibiotics, it may need to be removed to prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth or parts of the body.
Crowded Teeth: Sometimes, teeth must be removed to make space for proper alignment, especially in preparation for braces or other orthodontic treatments.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth often do not have enough space to erupt properly, leading to pain and potential complications. Removing these teeth can prevent issues like infection or damage to neighboring teeth.
At Stringham Dentistry, each tooth removal procedure is performed with precision and care. The dental team utilizes the latest tools and techniques to ensure minimal discomfort for patients, whether the extraction is simple or complex. Additionally, Stringham Dentistry offers a range of options for sedation and pain management to make the experience as stress-free as possible.
Gum Disease Treatment in Edmonton, AB
Another critical service offered at Stringham Dentistry is Gum Disease Treatment Edmonton AB. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common yet often overlooked condition that can lead to serious oral health problems if left untreated. Gum disease begins with the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth, which can irritate the gums and cause inflammation. If not addressed, this can lead to further complications such as tooth loss and bone damage.
There are two primary stages of gum disease:
Gingivitis: The early stage of gum disease, gingivitis is characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed when brushing or flossing. At this stage, the condition is reversible with proper dental care.
Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease. Periodontitis causes deeper damage to the gums and underlying bone structure, which may lead to tooth mobility and eventual loss.
The importance of early intervention cannot be overstated when it comes to gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease can cause irreparable damage and affect your overall health. Stringham Dentistry provides gum disease treatment in Edmonton, AB, using state-of-the-art technology and techniques. The treatment options available vary depending on the severity of the condition and may include:
Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): For patients with early-stage gum disease, a deep cleaning is often sufficient. This procedure involves removing plaque and tartar from both above and below the gum line to promote healthier gums.
Laser Therapy: In some cases, laser technology may be used to target infected tissue with precision, reducing discomfort and promoting faster healing.
Surgical Options: For more advanced cases of gum disease, surgical procedures such as gum grafting or flap surgery may be required to restore the health of the gums and prevent further damage.
Why Choose Stringham Dentistry for Tooth Removal and Gum Disease Treatment?
When it comes to tooth removal and gum disease treatment in Edmonton, Stringham Dentistry stands out for several reasons. Here are just a few of the benefits of choosing this dental practice for your care:

This means that patients can receive all their dental care in one convenient location.
Comfort and Convenience: Stringham Dentistry prioritizes patient comfort throughout every step of the process. The office is designed to create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, and sedation options are available for those who may feel anxious about dental procedures.
Patient Education: At Stringham Dentistry, patient education is a cornerstone of care. The dental team ensures that patients fully understand their condition and the available treatment options, empowering them to make informed decisions about their oral health.
Preventing the Need for Tooth Removal and Gum Disease Treatment
While tooth removal and gum disease treatment are essential for maintaining oral health, prevention is always the best approach. Stringham Dentistry emphasizes the importance of preventive care to avoid the need for these procedures in the first place.
Routine dental check-ups are key to catching issues early and preventing more serious complications. During these visits, the dentist can identify signs of gum disease, cavities, or other problems that may require treatment. Additionally, regular cleanings help remove plaque and tartar buildup, reducing the risk of gum disease.
Practicing good oral hygiene at home is also essential for preventing tooth removal and gum disease. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using mouthwash can help keep your mouth healthy and free from bacteria. Eating a balanced diet and avoiding tobacco products also play an important role in maintaining optimal oral health.
Conclusion
At Stringham Dentistry, the team is committed to providing comprehensive dental care, including tooth removal and gum disease treatment in Edmonton, AB. Whether you need a tooth extracted or treatment for gum disease, Stringham Dentistry offers the expertise, technology, and compassionate care necessary to help you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. By choosing Stringham Dentistry, you are choosing a team of professionals who are dedicated to your oral health and well-being.
If you are experiencing issues with your teeth or gums, don’t wait for the problem to worsen. Contact Stringham Dentistry today to schedule a consultation and take the first step toward improving your oral health. Your smile deserves the best care possible!

A Dentist for your Family
When looking for the right dental health practice for you and your family, you have a couple of options. There are those who prefer the convenience of having a dental health office that takes care of all their needs, offices equipped for a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures. There are also those who prefer a single dentist to take care of their yearly dental health maintenance cleanings and consultations and then go to a specialist should the need arise. There are pros read more here and cons to both of these choices. You need to figure out what’s right for you and for members of your family.
Today, the field of dentistry concerns itself with both the health of your mouth and also the beauty of your smile. Aside from making sure that it is clean and disease free, offices take care of a variety of procedures to help maintain your smile. If you’re looking for a place that can handle a variety of procedures and has the technology to do so, then you're looking for a specific kind of practice. Many family practices are also built this way. They may have a team of dentists that work together to provide you with the full range of services offered in dentistry today or they have a single dentist who has a multifaceted background and can perform a variety of procedures themselves. It is very convenient to have a place where you can go for everything you could possibly need in a dental health practice.
You may choose instead to have a dentist that takes care of your maintenance cleanings and general oral health care and choose to go to a specialist if you ever need a specific kind of work done. Usually, an office that concerns itself on the essentials can also perform a variety of medical fixes, such as filling in cavities, root canals, and some periodontal work. General health is more taken care of by hygienists, so a dentist can focus on the more important procedures for your oral health. When you need something special however, whether it is orthodontic work, cosmetic work, or a more difficult procedure such as wisdom teeth extraction or dental implants, a specialist will be recommended. When you go to a specialist you know that you are going to someone who focuses specifically on what you need. This can ensure excellent results.
The other thing to consider if you have a family is what is going to work for everyone. You don’t necessarily all need to go to the same practice but it can be a convenient way to provide for your family. Chances are you are all under one dental health plan so by being at one dentist, the administrators can easily work with your insurance company. You can also schedule multiple appointments in the same day to help with logistics of getting to and from the office. There are usually multiple appointments available at the same time with a team of hygienists working. You and your two children could be in and out the same amount of time as one single appointment!

We will relieve your pain today.
Why does toothache occur and what causes it?
Dental pain can occur for a variety of reasons, and the causes of dental pain can vary depending on the individual. Some common causes of dental pain include:
Tooth decay: When bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode the enamel of the tooth, it can lead to a cavity or tooth decay, which can cause dental pain.
Gum disease: Gingivitis and periodontitis are two common types of gum disease that can cause inflammation and pain in the gums.
Tooth fracture: A fracture in the tooth can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, leading to pain and sensitivity.
Grinding teeth: Teeth grinding or clenching can lead to tooth sensitivity and pain.
It’s important to see an emergency dentist if you experience dental pain so that they can diagnose the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment.
What are the treatment options for toothache?
Suffering from toothache? These are some of the treatment options available for toothache depending on the cause and individual cases:
Fillings
Extractions
Gum / Periodontal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment
other
As each case differs, our highly experienced dental professionals will need to go through your dental history and examine your oral condition first in order to determine the cause of your toothache before deciding on your treatment option that suits you best.
Feel free to contact us 24/7 if you are experiencing toothache or any other dental discomfort, our dentists will be here to look after you.
Toothaches can signify several problems such as
a. infection or the emerging of wisdom teeth
b. decay has reached the nerve and the nerve gets infected. This can cause a severe toothache.
c. Gum infection
The treatment varies from removal of the tooth or a root canal treatment. Even if the pain is bearable, it is best that you consult with an emergency dentist as soon as possible to prevent worsening of the condition. If you leave it alone for too long, the problem may be much harder to treat and will cost a lot more.
Emergency Dental Problem 2 in Sydney - Broken Tooth:
Although fillings and crowns are meant to last for a while, they can be damaged and weaken over time. The tooth itself can fracture due to eating hard foods or if there is any decay. When a filling is dislodged, you will feel an excruciating pain for a few moments.
It is best to seek an emergency dentist in Sydney to replace the filling soon to prevent future problems.
Emergency Dental Problem 3 in Sydney - Damaged Teeth:
This issue is quite common and is due to trauma of some type. A tooth can be saved if it is knocked out, but only if you get emergency dental work done within the hour. An emergency dentist will check for any possible damage to the gums or root of the tooth to find out if it can be reattached. If not, there are plenty of options available to make it seem it was never lost. A chipped tooth can be easily repaired as well.

Understanding Dental X-Rays: Importance, Types, and Safety
Dental X-rays, or dental radiographs, are key in modern dental care. They provide valuable insights into oral health that aren’t visible to the naked eye, allowing dentists to diagnose issues early and tailor treatments effectively. This article will explore the importance of dental X-rays, the various types available, what to expect during the process, and the safety measures to protect patients.
Why Are Dental X-Rays Important?
Dental X-rays play a crucial role in preventive care. It reveals underlying problems such as cavities, gum disease, bone loss, and impacted teeth before they cause noticeable symptoms. By identifying issues early, dentists can recommend less invasive treatments and prevent complications, ultimately saving patients time, discomfort, and expense.
For example, an X-ray can help detect:
Cavities between teeth that are not visible through visual inspection.
Infections at the root of a tooth.
Bone loss due to gum disease.
Impacted teeth that have not appropriately erupted, such as wisdom teeth.
Cysts or tumors that might indicate severe conditions requiring immediate attention.
Types of Dental X-Rays
There are several types of dental X-rays, each serving a unique purpose in diagnosing and monitoring oral health:
Bitewing X-Rays
These are commonly used to detect decay between teeth and check for bone loss due to gum disease. The X-ray captures the upper and lower back teeth in one area of the mouth, allowing dentists to assess alignment and decay.
2. Periapical X-Rays
This type of X-ray provides a detailed view of a single tooth from its crown to the root. It’s beneficial for diagnosing issues below the gum line, such as root infections and abscesses.
3. Panoramic X-Rays
With a machine that rotates around the patient’s head, panoramic X-rays provide a broad view of the entire mouth, including all teeth, jaws, sinuses, and nasal areas. These are useful for detecting jaw issues and impacted teeth and assessing growth and development in younger patients.
4. Occlusal X-Rays
These capture the floor or roof of the mouth and are typically used to assess tooth development and alignment in children and detect abnormalities in adults.
5. Cone Beam CT (CBCT)
A specialized 3D imaging technique, CBCT, is used when a detailed view is necessary, such as for planning implants, root canal treatment, or jaw surgery. It provides a comprehensive view of the teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways, and bone.
What to Expect During a Dental X-Ray
The dental X-ray procedure is quick, simple, and painless. Patients may be asked to bite on a plastic holder or stay still while the machine captures the images. A lead apron or collar is typically placed on the patient to minimize radiation exposure to other body parts.
In most cases, a single X-ray image takes only a few seconds to complete, and the entire process lasts no more than a few minutes. Unique holders or techniques may make the process more comfortable for children and patients with strong gag reflexes.
Safety of Dental X-Rays
Modern dental X-rays are incredibly safe, especially with today’s advancements in digital X-ray technology. Here are some of the ways dental offices ensure patient safety:
Low Radiation Exposure
Dental X-rays use a minimal amount of radiation compared to other types of medical imaging. Digital X-rays, now standard in most dental offices, reduce radiation exposure even further — up to 90% compared to traditional film X-rays.
2. Protective Equipment
Dentists provide lead aprons and thyroid collars to shield other body parts from exposure, ensuring that only the targeted area receives radiation.
3. Only When Necessary
Dentists follow strict guidelines to take X-rays only when clinically necessary, meaning they are not a part of every check-up but are recommended based on individual health needs and risks.
4. Frequent Safety Checks
Dental offices regularly inspect and maintain their X-ray equipment to ensure it operates at the lowest possible radiation level while capturing high-quality images.
5. How Often Should You Get Dental X-Rays?
The frequency of dental X-rays depends on each patient’s oral health, age, risk of disease, and history of dental issues. Patients with good oral health and a history of low risk may only need X-rays every 1–2 years, while others with a history of dental issues or those with certain conditions may require more frequent imaging.
Children and teens may also need X-rays more frequently than adults, as X-rays help monitor their oral development and detect potential issues with emerging teeth.
Dental X-rays are invaluable in preventive and diagnostic dentistry, offering insights essential for maintaining long-term oral health. Dental professionals can provide safe and effective care for patients of all ages by using advanced, low-radiation technology and ensuring proper safety measures.
