“I don’t remember exactly in what form I first encountered the story of Aladdin. But I remember I heard it in Bengali, and this happened in Calcutta, now Kolkata, when I was very young, before the Disney animated movie or the Alif Laila show on state-run Indian TV. The Arabian Nights are old and have grown in many directions, media, and languages, retold with infinite diversity and divergence. I never thought of the version I heard as “foreign” in any way.

It was many years later that I learned that even the “original” Arabian Nights Aladdin was a last-minute anthology insertion by a French collector based on a folktale he’d heard from a Syrian Christian storyteller, set in a generic China that was somehow also Muslim and Arab and featured a villain from generic Africa. And then I rewatched the animated film set in Hollywood exotic Arabia featuring classic American cinema/pop-culture references. And I knew that some day I needed to give this roaming orientalist classic yet another temporary residence to call its own. So this book started out as a retelling, a new house for a fable that I could see was tired and lost, but then the place I set the new story in, and the people who lived there, started demanding to be let in. This book is what happened after they took over and invited their friends. I think it stopped being a retelling at some point, but I was too busy trying to clean up after these unruly creatures to tell. Whatever it is, I really enjoyed writing this one!”

"আলিফ লায়লা" নামটিতেই ছোট বেলার অনেক মজার স্মৃতি ভেসে ওঠে মনে। বিভিন্ন জিন, পরি , রাজা আদির অজানা জাদুই গল্পের সঙ্গে আলাদিন, আলিবাবা চল্লিশ চোর ও সিন্দাবাদ এর মত বিখ্যাত গল্পের চলচ্চিত্র রূপ দেখতে পারার মতন অভিনব ও উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ আর কিছু কি ছিল সেই সময়?একটা গল্প শেষ হবার আগেই পরের গল্প কোনটা হবে সেটা জানার আগ্রহ, নতুন গল্প শুরু হলে, আগামীতে কোন গল্প বলবে সুলতানা সে নিয়ে জ��্পনা কল্পনা আর এর মাঝেই হঠাৎ করে আলিফ লায়লা অফ এয়ার হয়ে গেল স�� জল্পনা - কল্পনা, আশা - আকাঙ্খা অন্ত করে! তবু মোট ৩০৩ এপিসোডের সে আলিফ লায়লা চলেছিল ১৯৯৩-১৯৯৭ পর্যন্ত। এও বা কম কিসে? তারপর থেকে বেশ কয়েকবারই বেশ কিছু টিভি চ্যানেলই আলিফ লায়লার সেই পুরোনো এপিসোড গুলো আবার দেখার সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে। ইউটিউবে সার্চ করলেও যখন তখনই পুরনো স্মৃতি তাজা করার সুযোগ এসেছে। ব্যাপারটা এতো সহজলভ্য হওয়াতেই সম্ভবতঃ ধীরে ধীরে অতীতের আলিফ লায়লার মায়া কাটিয়ে মন বেরিয়ে এসে কর্মব্যস্ত জীবনে অন্যান্য নতুন নতুন মনোরঞ্জক উপকরণে ব্যস্ত হতে পেরেছে। এরই মধ্যে একদিন দঙ্গল টিভির ইউটিউব চ্যানেলে আবার এক নতুন আলিফ লায়লার দেখা মিলল। সময়টা ২০২০। দেখা মাত্রই পুরনো নস্টালজিয়া আবার জেগে উঠলো সঙ্গে জেগে উঠলো অনেক প্রশ্নও। শো-টা কেমন হবে? আগেরটার মতই নাকি অন্য রকম? কোন কোন গল্প কিভাবে দেখানো হবে ... ইত্যাদি। আর সময় নষ্ট না করে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে নতুন আলিফ লায়লার নিয়মিত দর্শক হয়ে নিরাশ হতে হলো না। যদিও দূরদর্শনের আলিফ লায়লা-র সঙ্গে তুলনাটা খুব স্বাভাবিক ভাবে এসেই যায় মনে তথাপি, তুলনাটা না করাটাই বোধ হয় ভালো কারণ এই শোতে মেকার্স বেশ কিছু নতুন এক্সপেরিমেন্ট করেছেন। এই শো-তে আনা পরিবর্তনগুলো বেশ প্রশংসাযোগ্যও বটে! বিশেষ করে, এক ম্যাজিকাল বই এর সাহায্যে প্রতিটি গল্পেই সুলতান শাহ্‌বাজ এর সেই গল্পের দুনিয়াতে প্রবেশ ও গল্পের মূল চরিত্রদের রূপে তাদের অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন করার ব্যাপারটা যেমন অভিনব তেমনি যুক্তিসঙ্গত মনে হয়। শুধু সুলতান-ই নয়, সুলতানা সেহেরকেও প্রতিটি গল্পের লেডি প্রটাগনিস্ট এর চরিত্রে দেখা যাবে। ব্যাপারটা সবার কাছে পছন্দ নাও হতে পারে তবে দেখতে মন্দ লাগবে না নিশ্চযই। যাহোক, দুর্ভাগ্যবশত বিশ্ব জুড়ে করোনা-র প্রকোপে লক ডাউন হলো ও অনেক টিভি শোর সঙ্গে আলিফ লায়লার শুটিংও মাঝপথেই বন্ধ হয়ে গেলো এবং পুনরায় শো-টি শুরু হবার আশাও ক্ষীণ হতে হতে শেষ হয়ে গেল। তবে যে কটা এপিসোড ইন্টারনেটে উপলব্ধ সেগুলো চাইলে এখনও দেখা যেতে পারে। ভুট (Voot)- এ সম্প্রতি মোট বত্রিশ (৩২) এপিসোড এর এই শোটি অ্যাড হয়েছে, যাতে বারোটি (১২) এক্সট্রা এপিসোড ও রয়েছে যেগুলো সম্ভবত টিভিতে এয়ার হয়নি। তাই আগে যারা শো-টি দেখেছেন তাঁরাও শুটিং হয়ে যাওয়া অবশিষ্ট বারোটি এপিসোড ফ্রীতে দেখে নেওয়ার জন্য ঘুরে আসতে পারেন voot থেকে। শোতে থাকা গল্পগুলো হচ্ছে : ১ আলিবাবা চাল্লিশ চোর ২ বাগদাদ কা চোর ৩ প্রিন্সেস ফিত্রেজ অ্যান্ড ফিশারমেন ৪ ডায়ন হীনা ৫ বিউটি এণ্ড দ্য বিস্ট ৬ আলাদিন তবে সাবধান বাণী: শেষের গল্পটিতো (আলাদিন) বটেই শো-টিও অসমাপ্ত অবস্থায়ই বন্ধ হয়েছে। অসমাপ্ত সিরিয়ালের গল্প দেখে হাপিত্যেশ করার জন্য প্রস্তুত থাকলেই আলিফ লায়লার এই রিমেকটা দেখতে শুরু করা ভালো !
