That's an exam ample of a charecter driven show well done.

The last arc of Alice & Zoroku was wonderful and concise and my favorite in the short 12 episode series, even though you might not know it by the posts, haha… it was a bit difficult to liveblog in the way of explaining what is actually going on and why. (And I’m not really about to, because this blog isn’t a w*kipedia page anyway)

I was wondering if the remaining episodes of the show would be just a slice of life following Sana adjusting to normal life once the organization had been unexpectedly defeated in episode 5, and I wasn’t sure if that could keep up without becoming a bit of a drag by the end, but when Ha-chan was introduced with her own arc that further pushed along or, maybe, threw a wrench, in Sana’s development I was pleased. 

I’ve read a few reviews for the show overall, ranging from 4-6 out of 10 ratings and I agree with their points even if I would rate the show a 7 or 8. A problem that seems to be cited often is the lack of information and proper conclusions and explanations… and that’s absolutely true. And usually that’s something that bothers me as well, but in Alice & Zoroku the lack of detail and information worked for me. I can’t imagine how the show would have pulled off detailed ideas and solutions and plans in regards to topics as large as the whole process of taking down an evil organization secretly experimenting on people with magical powers, and what, exactly, Wonderland is and the nature and scale of its Universe, and how Sana’s friends from the organization met their new families and how they are all coping, and how human rights changed upon a new kind of human being with magical powers becoming common and public. I’m not sure Alice & Zoroku could have explained how all of those things worked, and still manage to keep an earnest eye on the characters, if those characters were working to figure out those huge ideas and situations. It might get, as Sana would say, “frazzled”. 

To me, the lack of information about How things happened, was indeed jarring - it was jarring when Sana just told us after her own big emotional reveal in episode 5, that the organization was stopped and her friends were put into foster families and were re-adjusting to life. But it somehow didn’t come off as flippant to me and instead was just sort of… charming. It made me think, perhaps, that the show is only telling us what Sana knows. And Sana is a child and wouldn’t know the legal and technical processes of how exactly those Adult Issues worked. It made sense to me that Sana would only really know what an adult told her about it, and I didn’t mind that I didn’t see the detectives and cops plan and execute their strategy to take down the organization. I’d argue The End of that arc wasn’t the organization being stopped at all, but rather everything Sana realized about her own humanity in the midst of it all. 

So from that point on, I actually kind of just let myself get swept away and accept whatever Sana was able to tell me, which is indeed strange for me, the joyless harpy who picks apart everything. But I do like stories that are grounded, and focused, and this story focused on Sana regardless of the magic and fantasy around her, and the big ideas that were mentioned seemed to be a side-effect of the things Sana did and the things that happened to her; for example the sudden appearance of many more Dreams of Alice as a result of her and Ha-chan clashing in Wonderland. I didn’t really care about how the magic was being handled in the real world when 80% of the screen time was on Sana and Ha-chan talking and walking and figuring themselves out in Wonderland. 

This is one of those times when it really is a genuinely subjective opinion of mine! I had different expectations and wants from this show, and it focused on the things that I wanted it to, so I ended up enjoying it more than many other people who didn’t like the vagueness of the technicalities of how magic worked, how the organization was stopped, how the world changed in the last episode… and they’re not wrong for that and considering those things careless narrative flaws. I do think it could have been a tighter series, and maybe if it were longer it might have provided answers about those things, but I’m not sure if I would be pleased if it did, haha.
