“You’re not gonna get rabies.” Probably. It wasn’t like Jason could truthfully tell him that the kids had all their shots. He rolled his eyes, snorted. “Yeah, alright.” Keeping his body loose, his stance confident and completely unconcerned, he strode into the warehouse, knowing Dean was right behind him.
There were quite a few kids bunkering down already—maybe around fifteen. He’d have to get more cots soon. Luckily, there were still plenty of spare sleeping bags to go around. They were better than nothing. Kids huddled in small groups, some chatting with each other, some setting their things up in their chosen spots, some setting out clothes to dry in front of space heaters. Quite a few looked anxious, either sneaking glances or outright staring at the two of them. Alex stood in the middle of everything, eyes narrowed, arms crossed. Lisa, who’d bounced to her feet with a grin when she’d spotted him, had frozen the moment Dean entered behind him.
Jason ignored their reactions, clapped his hands together once, and raised his voice so it’d carry. “Hey, everyone,” he called out cheerfully. “I got someone I want you all to meet. This here’s my good friend, Dean. He takes out bad guys, just like me.” No way he was bringing up the fact that monsters were real. “I trust him with my life. Heck, he’s saved my butt more than a few times.” If he wanted the kids to trust Dean, he needed to show them they could. “If you’ve got a problem and you see him, you can ask him for help,” alright, maybe he should’ve discussed that with Dean first, but he didn’t think the man would turn down a little kid asking for help, “or you can ask him to call me. But if you see him working, or he tells you to run, I want you to run, alright? You get out of there and let him handle it. Spread the word.” He waited a beat, letting that sink in, before nodding once. “Alright. That’s all I wanted to say. As you were.”
Alex looked somehow even more skeptical by the end of Jason’s little speech, but Lisa had started inching closer to him again, though she didn’t take her wary little eyes off of Dean.
--- dean walked in step with jason, his hands swinging loose by his sides to ensure that whoever they were going to meet would be comfortable. he already knew this was important just because jason had asked him to come out here in the first place, but the fact he was saying it really hit home for dean. he nodded and gave a little chuckle at just how serious jason was taking it. "alright, alright kid. i get it. i won't be an asshole you got my word."
when jason waved at a couple of kids it really wasn't what dean expected. at this point he wasn't really sure what to expect but it wasn't that. he would have sooner expected some sort of half-way house with the way jason was talking but dean held his questions. he was just going to let jason show him and explain in his own time. he was clearly sharing something that mattered to him and dean didn't want to get in the way of what he had planned. that being said, jason's last statement did have dean raising his eyebrows. "bit? if i get rabies it's on you." he returned the smack to his arm with a light shove and a little smile. "don't worry so much, kid. i can handle you, right? should be fine."
