in calgary (one of the examples in the last pic) we've destroyed almost all of our heritage buildings and replaced them with boring cookie-cutter apartments and office towers. this city had so little history to begin with & now the only buildings we have are monuments to the 80's oil boom

Perhaps minimalist design is so prevalent because we no longer have anything to say.

#we do have some historical buildings that are occupied by businesses #but there are only 3 or 4 old apartment buildings downtown you can actually live in #everything else is from the 70s~80s onward #at least outside of the core there are lots of older homes but #those too are steadily being purchased by developers #and being demolished then replaced with an ugly new build that takes up 90% of the lot #ah yes i would like a 5000 sqft home with a 10'x2' patch of grass for my yard #im going to blow you up
