This city has a rich history, even mentioned in the great epic Mahabharata Agravan, meaning’the forest of Agra. But the golden age of cities began in the Mughal Empire. Credit goes to Akbar the Great, who built this modern city of Agra on the bank of the Yamuna River.

                        Itmad-ud-Daulah (1628)

Even During his son Jahangir’s regime, Agra remained an important city of India. But It was Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir, who was considered a de facto ruler. Itmad-ud-Daulah (1628), also known as the ‘Baby Taj,’ was built by empress Nur Jahan in the memory of her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. The structure is surrounded by a beautiful garden and various courtyards.

However, It was Shah Jahan, the successor of Jahangir, who built one of the most iconic structures and also a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Taj Mahal (1653), in the memory of her wife, Mumtaj Mahal.
