Stagecoach Mary by Dorothy Burge is one of the many incredible quilts in The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art ‘s exhibition “Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West” organized by historian, artist, and curator Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi.
From the museum’s wall information about the work-
Mary Fields- also known as Stagecoach Mary, Black Mary and White Crow-became a Wild West legend because she was the second woman and the first African American woman star route mail carrier in the United States.
Born into slavery and freed after the Civil War, she worked as a servant and laundress for families on riverboats before moving to Montana in 1885. A decade later she became a star route carrier, delivering mail using a stagecoach. She drove the 15-mile route from Cascade to Saint Peter’s Mission, Montana, from 1895 to 1903. Nicknamed Stagecoach Mary, she was known for her reliability and speed.
The six-foot-tall Fields was a quick-shooting and hard drinking mail carrier who wore men’s clothing and flaunted a revolver and a rifle. Locals praised her kindness and generosity, and schools in the town of Cascade were closed each year to celebrate her birthday. Cascade’s mayor granted her an exemption to enter saloons after Montana passed a law forbidding women from entering these establishments.
This exhibition closes 1/8/23.

Thus, join us as we explore sustainable practices and innovative ideas that elevate your woodworking skills while preserving our precious forests. So, let's unleash your creativity and craft timeless pieces with confidence!
How can I choose the best wood for my art projects?
Choosing the perfect wood for your art projects can make all the difference. Start by considering the type of project you're working on. For detailed carvings or intricate designs, fine-grained wood like maple or cherry offers smooth surfaces that enhance precision. If you're creating larger sculptures or furniture, durable woods such as oak or walnut provide strength and longevity. Each wood species has its unique characteristics, from color variations to grain patterns, ensuring your art piece stands out with natural beauty.
Quality matters when selecting wood for your art. Opt for sustainably sourced materials to support eco-friendly practices. Look for suppliers who prioritize responsible forestry, ensuring every tree cut down is replaced. This commitment not only preserves our forests but also guarantees you're working with ethically harvested wood. Whether you're crafting a masterpiece for display or a functional piece of furniture, sustainable wood choices not only benefit your project but also contribute positively to the environment.
Achieve artistic excellence by choosing the right wood for your creations. Experiment with different types like mahogany for its rich tones or birch for its smooth texture. Each wood variety lends itself uniquely to various techniques, whether you're painting, staining, or leaving the natural grain exposed. Understanding the properties of different woods empowers you to select the ideal material that complements your artistic vision. With the right wood at hand, your art projects will not only reflect your creativity. But also showcase the beauty and versatility of natural materials.
What are some common wood art techniques used in Kampala?
For example, discover the vibrant world of wood art in Kampala, where skilled artisans blend traditional techniques with modern creativity. Carving is a cornerstone here, with craftsmen expertly shaping local hardwoods like mahogany and ebony into intricate sculptures and functional pieces. Each piece tells a story, reflecting Uganda's rich cultural heritage and the artisan's dedication to their craft. Whether it's the smooth lines of a wildlife sculpture or the detailed patterns of a decorative bowl. Kampala's wood artists captivate with their precision and passion.
Embrace the allure of wood burning, another cherished technique in Kampala's artistic repertoire. Using hot tools, artisans etch designs into wood surfaces, creating breathtaking patterns and personalized artworks. From custom signs that adorn homes and businesses to intricate wall hangings that celebrate African motifs, wood burning adds a distinct touch of elegance and uniqueness to every creation. In Kampala, this technique isn't just about decoration. It's a testament to the artisan's skill and their ability to transform simple wood into enduring works of art that resonate with beauty and meaning.
Experience the artistry of inlay work, where Kampala's wood craftsmen skillfully embed contrasting materials like metal, ivory, or other woods into their creations. Nigeria Wildlife Protection Bill Passes First Reading
Nigeria's new Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill passed its first reading in the House of Representatives on Monday, February 26. Wild Africa Fund said that the new Bill aims to tackle wildlife trafficking, protect endangered species, and ensure Nigerian compliance with global conservation treaties. The Bill, prepared by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Environment and sponsored by Hon. Terseer Ugbor, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, would update and greatly improve current laws. It would further disrupt and deter illegal wildlife trade within the country by enhancing law enforcement capabilities, increasing investigative powers to include financial enquiries and intelligence-led operations, as well as expands courts' ability to expedite wildlife cases and recover assets. It also creates corporate liability, supports international cooperation and imposes stringent penalties for traffickers and poachers. Hon. Ugbor expressed enthusiasm about the Bill's passage, when he said: "Wildlife trafficking is not just a crime against nature; it is a threat to our planet's delicate balance. This Bill ensures that we act decisively to protect and preserve these irreplaceable components of our natural heritage, recognizing our responsibility to future generations. “ “This legislation is not just about what happens within these legislative walls; it's about a collective effort. In the face of escalating environmental challenges, this bill is a beacon of hope. "It reflects our commitment to a sustainable future, where humans and wildlife coexist harmoniously. Let us pass this legislation for the sake of our planet, for the generations to come, and for the preservation of Nigeria's natural heritage.” “If enacted, the legislation would bring Nigeria in line with international standards and agreements. "By aligning domestic legislation with global treaties and conventions, Nigeria demonstrates its commitment to being a responsible and active participant in the global effort to tackle wildlife trafficking and protect endangered species such as lions, elephants, gorillas, pangolins, chimpanzees and many more.” Africa Nature Investors Foundation (ANI), the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and Wild Africa Fund (WAF) have been actively supporting the Nigerian Government’s efforts to fight illegal wildlife trafficking, with support from the UK Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund and the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. Tunde Morakinyo, ANI Executive Director, said: “The enactment of this landmark bill will strengthen efforts to address wildlife crime in Nigeria and its reintroduction in the House of Representatives attests to the resolve of the Nigerian government to find a lasting solution to the problem. "ANI Foundation will continue to work with its partners to support its swift enactment.” Mary Rice, Executive Director of EIA UK said: “Criminal justice responses against wildlife trafficking can only succeed within the framework of robust legislation, enabling investigators, prosecutors and the judiciary to deliver justice. EIA is proud to have supported the development of this Bill so far, and urges Nigerian lawmakers to see through its enactment without delay.” Wild Africa Fund CEO, Peter Knights added: “If passed swiftly, this state-of-the-art legislation will make Nigeria the regional leader it needs to be in fighting wildlife crime and help wildlife across the African continent.” The Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill will proceed to hearings and subsequent readings, for further scrutiny from lawmakers and public input. Amid this delightful fusion of styles, African grommet curtains emerge as a quintessential blend of traditional artistry and contemporary elegance. For those unfamiliar with the magic of African-inspired décor, allow us to introduce you to its latest marvel – the African Grommet Curtain.
The African Influence in Design
African design is not just about vibrant colors and intricate patterns; it's a manifestation of stories, histories, and lifestyles. Every weave, every dye, and every motif has a tale of its own, rooted deep within the rich tapestry of African cultures. And in a world increasingly seeking authenticity and a touch of nostalgia, African designs offer an unfiltered connection to the heart of nature and tradition.
Grommet Curtains: The Modern Elegance
Grommet curtains, known for their eyelet rings at the top, are the epitome of modern design. Not only are they incredibly easy to hang, but they also slide smoothly across a curtain rod, making them a hassle-free choice for homeowners. Their sleek appearance complements contemporary aesthetics, offering a clean and sophisticated look.
Combine this with African design, and you get African Grommet Curtains – a delightful juxtaposition of tradition and modernity.
Why Choose African Grommet Curtains?
Unmatched Aesthetics: African designs, with their bold colors and dynamic patterns, offer a visual treat. Whether it's the rich terracottas reminiscent of the African sunsets or the deep blues evoking the vast African skies, these curtains are sure to be a focal point in any room.
Storytelling at Its Best: Every curtain not only beautifies your space but also carries with it tales of African villages, wildlife, and traditions. It's not just a curtain; it's a conversation starter.
Ease and Functionality: Thanks to the grommet design, these curtains are incredibly easy to hang, manage, and clean. They drape beautifully, ensuring both aesthetics and functionality are met.
Versatility: Whether you have a modern urban apartment or a rustic country home, African grommet curtains can seamlessly fit into any décor, lending a touch of warmth and character.

How to Style Your African Grommet Curtains?
Embrace Neutral Tones: Let your curtains be the star of the room. Pair them with neutral-colored walls, such as beige, taupe, or soft white, so the curtains stand out.
Incorporate African Accessories: Complete the African vibe with some matching accessories – think African tribal masks, wooden sculptures, or woven baskets.
Use Plants: African design is deeply connected to nature. Add some indoor plants, like the snake plant or the rubber tree, to enhance the natural feel.
Play with Lighting: Soft, warm lighting can accentuate the colors and patterns of your curtains. Consider floor lamps or pendant lights that cast a warm glow in the room.
Layering: If you’re feeling experimental, layer your African grommet curtains with solid-colored sheer curtains. It adds depth, luxury, and a sense of coziness.
In Conclusion
