Centurions Williamson, Ravindra add unbeaten 219 as New Zealand dominate Day 1
The inexperienced Tshepo Moreki and Dane Paterson initially tested the hosts, before their third-wicket pair went undefeated New Zealand 258 for 2 (Ravindra 118, Williamson 112, Paterson 1-59) vs South Africa
Centuries from Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra at entirely different stages of their careers - and both of varying styles - made South Africa pay for the lack of experience and pace, and the chances they put down of both batters. The duo had put on 219 runs for the unbroken third wicket by the end of the first day to deflate a spirited South Africa line-up that had reduced the hosts to a tricky 39 for 2 in the first session. Williamson was the more patient and circumspect of the two as he put a scratchy start behind him, whereas Ravindra smoked a six on his 11th ball to get going for his best Test score as both batters picked up pace in the last session to just about touch the run rate of three an over.
Ravindra and Williamson had to steer New Zealand out of troubled waters after debutant Tshepo Moreki started his Test career with a first-ball wicket by trapping Devon Conway lbw for 1 in the second over of the game. In his accurate first spell of 5-1-10-1, Moreki beat Williamson three times in 15 balls for just five runs.
Dane Paterson also tested the batters with his seam movement with wobble seam, and he soon drew Tom Latham's outside edge for 20. The jitters continued as Williamson was nearly run-out when Ravindra tapped his fifth ball towards cover point for a quick single, only for the throw to be wayward. Had Williamson been dismissed, the hosts would have been 44 for 3 then.
Ravindra's start was much more confident, as he welcomed Moreki back for a second spell with a six over the long-leg boundary. Moreki continued to impress nonetheless, and even drew Ravindra's edge three balls later, but it fell well short of second slip. Ravindra enjoyed some more luck off Moreki on 23 when his inside edge just missed the stumps which made him a bit more watchful.
The duo batted patiently through a wicketless second session of 27 overs for just 60 runs, with plenty of leaves and blocks because of the tight bowling from the four South Africa quicks. South Africa were fielding an all-pace bowling attack and six debutants in Mount Maunganui, including their captain Neil Brand. Since 1995, it was the first instance by a Test nation apart from Ireland and Afghanistan who had their captain on debut when the side wasn't playing its first Test.

Contextualising Remembrance.
I was born into a military family. My Dad served. My Mum served. My Grandfathers, both. My Great Uncle. Their fathers. Most of them were involved in conflicts, well documented. Battles etched in history. All of them would honour Remembrance Day, attending services wearing their medals, wearing berets, side caps, and the regalia of service. Remembrance for them, was exactly that. People they knew, and served with. They knew their names. They knew who they were, perhaps in a more intimate way than their own families. Brothers in arms.
Full disclosure: I didn't serve in the armed forces. My health excluded me.
Today, for many of us. It's a generation, or even the previous generation removed from experience. There will be those who lost loved ones in Suez, Aden, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, The Balkans, both Gulf Wars, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan or anywhere where British Armed Forces boots hit soil, as the British Empire violently contracted after WWII.
But the sheer visceral loss of two World Wars, especially after 1914-1918, focused the minds of my parents and grandparents, into a single phrase: "NEVER AGAIN." A phrase printed on the first paper poppies, given by the Royal British Legion, as the traditions of remembrance coalesced. Remembrance was in the pursuit of peace; an end to war. A hopeful pursuit, long since politicised and utilised as a form of propaganda, for geopolitical adventurism, for colonialism, for religion, for the glorification of war, for the status quo.
There is a strong argument, as the years march on, 105 years after the guns fell silent on 11/11/1918, at precisely 11:11am, that we have lost focus on the reasons why we remember. There are those who call Remembrance day "sacred." Sacred to whom? We remember in our own ways, not just this day. We respect our veterans, don't we? Unfortunately many veterans find it hard to adjust. Survivor's guilt, PTSD, and countless other factors often marginalise our veterans, who turn to drink and drugs and end up homeless. The right wing saw that we should look after our veterans before we care for immigrants, is one egregious argument that simultaneously dehumanises both groups.
Who'd argue that veterans don't deserve our care? Of course they do, but who, with the power and ability to do so, has re-homed and rehabilitated these veterans? And when contentious issues like immigration have been used as a wedge to divide the nation by the right wing, while we see our weapons being sold to regimes that destabilise regions that create refugees, heading to the comparatively peaceful and prosperous West...who would blame them in their desire to escape conflict?
When you can't escape, though...what then? I speak of Gaza, and the latest conflagration between Israel and Hamas. It's in the interest of both, that this is portrayed as an ongoing Holy War between Islam and Judaism. However, Palestinian civilians are trapped in Gaza. As you read this many hundreds of thousands flee south, away from the encroaching IDF. Slingshots vs tanks are the stories of the past. Guided missiles and white phosphorus are the weapons of choice, today. Hamas is well armed and prepared for a siege, emerging from a network of tunnels beneath Gaza City. The civilians caught in the blast radius of Israeli bombs are wholly unprepared. It is for them, that many marched from Hyde Park to the US Embassy, today. In fact, there have been pro-Palestinian marches every Saturday, in London since the Oct 7 attacks by Hamas, which sparked this latest conflagration. Supporters of Israel too, have held vigils for the kidnapped. It's an overarching desire for a peaceful solution, that largely motivates both. The pro-Palestinian movement, appalled by the government's and opposition's support of Israel's disproportionate response, march for a ceasefire. And it's not just here, but the US and Europe, across the board, many have been horrified by the hatred demonstrated by both Israel and Hamas. But these latest incidents have not come from one single event. The histories of Palestine and Israel, which I can't go into here, suffice to say, are steeped in blood. Some would argue with the birth of modern Israel, carved out of what was Mandatory Palestine, which the British Empire oversaw, after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, saw the Nakba atrocities as the beginning. Zionism, as in the right for Israel to exist as a nation, has not sat well in what is the Holy Land for 3 competing faiths. Zionist extremists call for death to Arabs. Islamist extremists call for death to Jews. Christians in the region (1% of Gaza's population) suffer under both of these extreme ideologies.
World Wars leave long shadows. It's entirely appropriate, that on this day of peace and remembrance, so many marched for peace and remember what this world has lost, and could lose again.
How could any soldier, who has fought and served, argue?

North Sea Scotland (6): In Pictland
The Picts are Europe's noble savage.
Proud, fierce and independent, they are easy to admire, and chief among the admirers were their enemies. Tacitus, so-in-law of a Roman general who fought them, commended them for defending the world's "last inch of liberty".
The Picts could never be subdued, only wiped out. Their disappearance from the record around the 10th century adds to their mystique.
They had no writing but did not leave without a trace. About 200 carved stones remain dotted around the Picts' heartland.
A clutch of them are on display at a great little museum just north of Dundee, the Meigle Sculpture Stone Museum. They are not just stunning works of art: they bear testimony to a tragic history.
But before turning to those slabs, I'll go through a few things we know about the Picts from other sources. As mentioned in my previous post, they were a Brittonic people. Britons, by the way, are Celts who lived on the island of Britain during the Iron Age and are distinct from Gaelic Celts from Ireland.
While the Romans conquered most of Britain, Picts and other Brittonic holdouts kept them out of "Caledonia". The Anglo-Saxons who replaced the Romans also stayed south of the border – initially at least – to focus on fighting each other.
Meanwhile the Picts prospered. By the fifth century, their kingdom stretched from the top of Scotland to the Firth of Forth, the inlet just north of Edinburgh.
At a time when Anglo-Saxons and Gaelic Scots were fragmented into warring chiefdoms and clans, Pictland remained united (apart from a temporary north-south split following the introduction of Christianity).
So what was the secret of the Picts' success? I found a convincing explanation in Jamie Jeffers' engagingly erudite British History Podcast: matrilineal succession.
The rule around Europe then - and until the 20th century - was that first-born sons inherited the crown. The system might not yield the best person for the job but it had the virtue of simplicity: if a) your dad is king and b) you've got a penis but no older sibling who does, then you're next in line. End of.
The Picts had different approach. Tribal chiefs got together and settled successions through consensus, a process that was better at weeding out obvious inadequates than accident of birth.
And crucially, they chose among candidates who could trace their royal ancestry through the female line. As Jeffers notes, this prevented disputes: if the male carries the magic blood, there is always a possibility that his partner could carry another man's child and the throne loses its magic; if it's the woman who carries the magic blood, then you know that her offspring carries it as well.
Princesses, in other words, had quasi-mystical pulling power among Pictish nobles, a unifying feature reinforced by the deliberative selection system. To Jeffers' analysis, I would add the hypothesis that any increase in the status of women - even limited to royals - contributes to the cohesiveness, stability and sophistication of a society. Just look at today's Denmark vs the Tabilan's Afghanistan.
This brings me back to the Meigle museum, where the high degree of Pictish civilisation is on display.
The stones tell us about the beliefs of a deeply pious people.
Among the distinctive symbols and patterns are representations of fabulous creatures, including a lion with a man's head and dancing sea-horses (above).
The Picts were also fond of domestic animals.
The menageries above feature horses, stags, cattle as well as the manticore, a monster of middle-eastern origin with the tail of a scorpion. Clearly the Picts were aware of distant lands.
Several stones combine pagan and Christian symbols, illustrating how the new religion was assimilated into ancient beliefs. They show crosses superimposed on representations of animals. Note the seahorses again and the cat on the bottom left!
I couldn't help but see those stones as expressions of unity. As mentioned, northern Picts were slower than southerners in adopting Christianity. The carvings seem to say: whatever our beliefs, we are one nation.
The last of the stones date from about 850 AD. No trace of a Pictish civilisation remains beyond 900. This raises the question: if the Picts were so sophisticated, why did they vanish? Well, the superior nature of a civilisation does not a guarantee survival.
In the end, the Picts had too many enemies: Gaelic Scots to the west, Brittonic rivals to the south-west and increasingly assertive Anglo-Saxons in the south. For a while, the Picts dealt with these threats by a combination of force and bridal diplomacy. Pictish princesses married potential foes.
In the ninth century, Viking invasions forced the Picts to get closer to the Scots. This political shift led to Gaelic symbols appearing on Pictish stones.
In 843, Kenneth MacAlpin absorbed Pictland into his Scottish kingdom. The fact that his mother was Pictish helped the junior partner accept the takeover. But it spelled the end for their nation.
The Picts themselves, it appears, understood the limits of bridalism as a foreign-policy tool.
One of the more intriguing stones shows a human figure set upon by animals (below). Museum curators say she could be Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur.
The Welsh legend was adopted by the Picts. In their version Guinevere was a Pictish princess, known locally as Vanora, whose marriage to Arthur highlighted Brittonic unity against the Anglo-Saxons.
But the alliance did not work out: Vanora, as the carvings show, was fed to ravenous beasts by her jealous husband.
