Part of me understands that there are children in the world who have such a voracious appetite for learning that they will advance to college level when they're young teenagers, but another part of me wonders how many parents push their kids too hard to make themselves look good above focusing on what their kids need - time to relax, to build social relationships with people their own age, to explore non academic hobbies. I don't care what kind of complex mathematics you can do if you can't do laundry.
#I say this as someone who went to schools for poor kids who are smart. it's horrible on your mental health#there was a girl I knew in highschool who was absolutely brilliant but self harming and on the brink of suicide because of the pressure#heck my ex boyfriend developed a drinking peoblem because we were under so much pressure#I will tell anyone who asks he's a brilliant guy but because of his family's abuse his relationship skills are in shreds#adulthood is not something you achieve through test scores and landing on the dean's list#it is work. sometimes it is brutal work. and children need to be able to play before they work#I know I know in an ideal world#also also like what subjects are the ones we pick out the geniuses from. its never history. its never art. its math. its science#education#love at second sight
