Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Director - Adrian Grunberg, Cinematography - Brendan Galvin
"I've lived in a world of death. I tried to come home, but I never really arrived. A part of my mind and soul got lost along the way, but my heart was still here where I was born, where I would defend to the end the only family I've ever known, the only home I've ever known. All the ones I've loved are now ghosts. But I will fight to keep their memory alive forever."

Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Tumblr media
I owe some apologies to the previous chapters of this series when I described them as “cartoonish” or “gratuitous”. Lazily written, unimaginative, senselessly bloody and unsatisfying, there’s little about Rambo: Last Blood to enjoy.
Eleven years after the previous film, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) lives on his late father’s ranch with Maria (Adriana Barraza, playing what I thought was Rambo’s sister despite being neither white nor Native American but now I’m not so sure) and her adopted daughter, Gabriela (Yvette Monreal). A visit to Mexico sees Gabriela forced into prostitution by cartel members Hugo and Victor Martinez (Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Óscar Jaenada), prompting Rambo to come to rescue her and enact revenge.
It feels strange seeing a Rambo film unconcerned with war. Instead, we have a cross between Taken and Home Alone. I know some readers think it’d be cool to see John Rambo using his guerrilla warfare knowledge to set up spike pits, automatically discharging firearms, mines, and that sort of thing. An R-Rated version of Kevin McCallister’s antics! We’ve already seen a gory version of the slapstick Christmas comedy classic; The Collector (and its sequel), in which a serial killer fills his victims’ homes with deadly snares. That was a much better - and more sensitive - movie. This is a sadistic revenge fantasy that morphs into masturbation material for psychopaths who voted for the Trump administration. If you’re a brown-skinned male in this movie, you’re an irredeemable human turd at best, and a sadistic rapist at worst. This film’s idea of Mexico is nothing less than a cesspool of crime.
I'm almost certain the script started off with Gabriela as Rambo’s daughter until someone realized the man’s only been in the States for a handful of years. Instead of trying hard to come up with something worthy of the audience's time, they just assumed you'd be dumb and made her the adopted daughter of this woman living with Rambo. These two female characters don’t matter anyway. Every action is nothing more than a means to get you to that final climax set in a maze of tunnels beneath Rambo's childhood farm... tunnels he dug himself for fun over the last decade, I guess?
A certain amount of gratification can be found in the bloody carnage of Last Blood. Cheap tricks are used to get us there but if that’s all you want, then fine. Thing is, you’ve seen everything this picture has to offer before and better. There’s no suspense. No character development. No scene in which Rambo contemplates why he's made these elaborate devices to mutilate and kill beyond "they're bad and I hate them". It’s the antithesis of a film like Logan, which also followed a hero, now in his twilight being forced into violence once more. That film really considered its characters and delivered. This? It’s about as generic a violent R-Rated revenge movie as you can get. (Theatrical version on the big screen, September 26, 2019)

Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. John Rambo has resigned to a peaceful life in Arizona. Although he still struggles with PTSD from his days in the army, Rambo seems to be content working on a ranch, living with his family friend Maria (Adriana Barraza). But when her teenaged grand-daughter Gabrielle (Yvette Monreal) is kidnapped, Rambo finds himself up against a Mexican drug cartel. With the help of an…

'Rambo: Last Blood' is a Disgrace to This Franchise
‘Rambo: Last Blood’ is a Disgrace to This Franchise
Tumblr media
Okay, let us cut to the chase: “Rambo: Last Blood” is a disgrace to the long-running franchise. Sylvester Stallone is back as former Army Special Forces Officer and Vietnam veteran John Rambo, but I really do not recognize the character here. Whereas the previous installments observed Rambo as a soldier trying to deal with a violent past, this one instead treats him as just another guy out for…

RAMBO: LAST BLOOD d’Adrian Grunberg : Maman, j’ai massacré les méchants
Tumblr media
