Something I'm not loving about the new Rapman show SUPACELL is the way it relegates Adelayo Adedayo, a very good actor who showed a real flair for comedy in SOME GIRLS and TIMEWASTERS, to a thankless role as a Concerned Girlfriend whose imminent fridging is threatened in order to drive the actions of a male character.

“Again, it’s loads of fun,” she smiles. “Everyone on that set is aware of how heavy the show is and has a laugh between takes. I spend a lot of time on The Responders with Martin Freeman and both of us are jokers who like to take the piss a little bit. Just before they call ‘action’ he’ll say something funny, which isn’t fair because I’m a corpse-r and Martin is able to keep a straight face no matter what you throw at him. He’s really adamant about having a good time and appreciating how much of a privilege it is to be doing what we’re doing.

The Responder - still drama at its best

SUPACELL has some worthwhile aspects (including excellent acting throughout), but its brutal treatment of its female characters, including but not limited to the essentially slow-motion fridging of the Adelayo Adedayo character, is extremely distasteful and hard to overlook. (The show brutally murders four Black women, three of them with really disconcerting callousness, and repeatedly threatens another with sexual violence.)
