This is all just stuff that has helped me personally. If it clicks for you then use it.
If you come up with something for your character, even if it’s small. Go ahead and write it down. Not to go against what the first reply says but sometimes if that character’s favourite food suddenly comes to you it’s a good idea to write it down in a spare notes file. Just incase you do end up needing it down the road. You didn’t need to know everything about your character but if you feel like a detail fits them then keep note of it so you have it….
Find a faceclaim if you like to visualize your character’s expressions. I can write a character so much better if I can see their face and what their face looks like as they react to something….I’ve got a great imagination but faces always elide me…and the human brain can’t create a face from nothing so….visualizing someone’s face without having a faceclaim is nearly impossible for me which means my writing for them suffers just a little because I can’t see them in my mind.
How you approach your character and how you approach character building for them can change depending on what you’re going to use them for!
My rp oc’s? Well…for my og oc I can tell you her favourite colour is blue, her favourite junk food is smarties (not the American kind, those are rockets to me). Her favourite fruit is apples, she loves being a mom, she’s rich and tends to forget it because she rarely actually uses the money, she’s a cat person, dislikes dogs but doesn’t hate them, just weary around them. She knows ballet, ballroom dancing, is a very talented figure skater, but will also trip and fall on nothing, her favourite Disney movie is beauty and the beast, her least favourite Disney movie is the live action BatB and Hercules, they get too much wrong in it for her to like it. She is terrified of spiders and her biggest fear is hurting her loved ones or being alone. All these things came at different times, I wrote it down when it came to me and now I have a pretty full character profile for her. Someone could ask me just about anything about her and I’d be able to answer.
My characters for the books I’m writing? For the one book I know the characters appearances and that one is diabetic for the other book I know names and the vague appearances of three out of four of the main characters. These ones are still being developed but because the type of things I know for my rp character might not come up for the book characters I’m not too concerned about figuring thst out. If someone asked me about it then I’d give it a quick think and figure something out but for now it’s not important.
I need everyone’s best character advice. STAT.
