Four and Seven Makes Eleven (And Terrify Sour Old Men)
They're ten years old when Viktor peeks into Klaus's room after he'd been brought back from the mausoleum. They're ten years old when Viktor says he can help.
"What?" Klaus wipes his eyes as his brother (neither of them knew that yet, but as Viktor would later say, it's who he's always been) sits on his bed.
"I help dad train you all," Viktor whispers. "He keeps getting mad at your for your powers, but... I think he's just doing it wrong."
"Really?" Klaus sits up. "... You... do you know about the graveyard?"
Viktor shakes his head. "But I know he takes you somewhere bad. I know he did today."
"... It's this creepy place in the graveyard. Mau... mauso... something. He locks me in."
Viktor's breath catches. "I don't like that either."
Klaus nods. "And the ghosts just scream, and try to grab me."
"... I'm scared of silence," Viktor says quietly. "... But yours sounds bad too."
"Yeah."
"So I'll try to help you." Viktor holds Klaus's hand. "I don't have my own powers, but... maybe this is how I can help everyone. By helping you."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Klaus watches Viktor takes his meds before they start. "Are you nervous?"
Viktor shakes his head. "But I don't wanna get nervous during this." He looks at his notebook, a cheap one from a dollar store full of notes either copies from their father on the occasions Viktor could see the pages, or simply made from Viktor's own observations. Now, it also includes things Klaus has told him. "So, when you're on painkillers, it makes the ghosts less here?"
Klaus nods, making his bed shake a bit. Luther and Allison and Ben got the good beds. Klaus, Diego, Five, and Viktor got the shaky ones. Viktor says their ad says it has something to do with power honing. Klaus thinks he just doesn't like them as much.
"Well, we can't do that," Viktor says firmly. "Because on Saturday I got to go to the real library with Mom and I found a newspaper talking about how they can be addictive."
"And?"
"And that can make you sick. It can make you stop eating and stop thinking and stop feeling and it can make you die if you take too much, and they make you want to take too much."
Klaus goes pale. "No painkillers," he agrees with a nod.
"And you said they get worse when you're upset." He taps his notebook with his pencil. "So we need to show them they can't upset you."
"But they're so scary." Klaus pulls his knees to his chest, voice wavering. "They're... hurt. They have guts hanging out, or blood pouring... no-one who dies happy sticks around. Only the sad and angry ones."
"... Can we make them happy?"
"They want me to avenge them. But they want me to kill people for it." Klaus claps his hands over his ears. "I don't want to hurt anyone!"
Viktor hugs Klaus tight. "You won't! We'll find another way to make them wanna leave. I promise."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Are you sure this'll work?" Klaus whispers to his brother as they make their way to the police station in the dead of night.
"Police are supposed to catch bad guys, just like you," Viktor whispers back. He holds up the envelope. "And that ghost gave us a lot of tips and things no-one else would know. They'll have to investigate it."
"Okay."
They slip the envelope under the door to the station and sprint back home.
The next morning the radio speaks about a six-year-old cold case finally solved, and one ghost disappears.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're eleven when they realize that doesn't fix everything, because some of these ghosts were killed by police and the police aren't even sorry. They're in it for attention and praise, not for actually protecting or bringing justice.
"Luther would be a good cop," Klaus says bitterly, drawing on his wall.
"We'll find something else," Viktor says pouring over his notebooks. They filled up the first one fast. No-one knows, still, about them working together. No-one pays enough attention to them to notice other than their dad, but he has to sleep eventually too, and Viktor figured out when he sleeps before he'd ever approached Klaus about helping.
"How?"
"Maybe you don't always need to help them move on." Viktor taps his pencil against his chin, the steady rhythm a soothing, almost entrancing little sound. "Maybe you could make them go away."
"I've tried," Klaus moans. "Dad always tells me to, but I can't."
"But Dad makes you scared first, or yells at you. And then things gets worse. ... Maybe you need to be calm for it."
"How do I do that?"
"We could give you one of my meds."
Klaus thinks, and then shakes his head. "What if it just does what the painkillers do?"
"I'm not addicted to them."
"No, but they don't help my powers. They just sort of..." He makes a face. "... Shut them off. Or, um, make them... fuzzy. And it's better, but it doesn't make them go away forever. I'd need to take them all the time."
"Which isn't helpful," Viktor agrees. "Dad would notice, too. So no meds." He scratches that out of his notebook. "Then, we can try this." He shows Klaus the page. "Meditation."
"... I don't know." Klaus bites his nails. "They get mad when I ignore them."
"I'll be here with you." Viktor holds his hand. "If they start yelling too much, tell me, and I'll... I'll get you something to help. Not painkillers. Hot coco, maybe."
"... I... guess it's worth a shot."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Viktor gets a meditation tape when he goes to the library that Saturday, and they sneak into one of the farthest bedrooms to make sure no-one is able to hear it.
Klaus follows the instructions on the tape, taking deep breaths and trying to clear his head. The ghosts scream, and beg, and they're just like usual, and he whimpers and covers his ears.
"I'm here," Viktor says softly. "It's okay. You're not alone."
We're not alone.
They have each other, now.
Klaus holds Viktor's hand tightly. He breathes, and focuses on Viktor humming quietly. He focuses on the sound of the living, breathing human next to him, and lets that make everything else fade away.
When he opens his eyes, the ghosts are fainter. Not gone, but not so overwhelming. He brightens up, and grins at Viktor. "It helped!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They figure out that a tether helps. Something to keep Klaus aware of the land of the living, even as the dead try to block it all out.
They're twelve when Klaus suggests stealing their dad's notebook.
"We can't," Viktor insists with wide and fearful eyes. "He'll kill us!"
"But he still says I'm wasting my potential," Klaus whisper-argues. "I think he knows how I can make them go away completely won't tell me!"
"Why wouldn't he tell you?"
"You know how he is. He wants us to figure everything out without help, real help. He thinks help and hurt are the same things."
"... But he'll get so mad."
"But I know nice ghosts now," Klaus pleads. "They agreed to watch and see if Dad or Pogo or Mom get too close. We just need to sneak into his office. It won't be that hard. They said the lock is still broken from that fit Luther had and Dad hasn't gotten around to fixing it yet."
Viktor looks around the room. "... And the ghosts... you trust them?"
Klaus nods. "They hate Dad. He reminds them of their dads. They want to help us rebel."
Well, their father has always said that shared hate is just as strong a bond as shared trust. "... Okay."
And so they sneak through the hall, knowing well how to navigate the house silently after their two years of secret training together, and make it to his office. Klaus whispers at the ghosts to keep watch, and they push the door open just barely enough to slip in.
The office is silent. A portrait of Reginald stares down at them. They both shiver.
"We should go," Viktor whispers.
"Just one look," Klaus begs. "I need to know why he's so disappointed. I need to know what I'm doing wrong."
They find the notebook in a small ornate box with a few other items. They open it carefully, and bring it to the window to read in the moonlight.
"His notes aren't as organized as yours," Klaus whispers. "And his handwriting is worse."
"He's the only one who ever reads it," Viktor whispers back. "It must make sense to him and that's good enough."
Flip, flip, fli-
"Wait." Klaus puts his finger on the page. "Go back."
They flip back.
Number Seven
"He has notes about me?"
"What do they say?"
Viktor reads, and the color drains from his face. Then, his face turns red. He shoves the notebook into Klaus's hands.
Klaus struggles to read it for a moment, but when it finally sinks in his eyes go wide. "You... you have powers?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm going to smack Allison," Viktor says back in Klaus's room. The ghosts had said Pogo stirred, and the two children had hurried to put everything back and return to their safe haven. "I know we were four, but I'm going to smack her."
"Maybe she doesn't know why Dad had her do it." Klaus is sitting cross-legged on his bed, picking at a loose thread on his pajama leg. "I think I remember Dad telling us you were sick. That you weren't normal and couldn't be around us."
"Not normal..." Viktor sits on the bed. "That's why. He says I'm ordinary. Klaus, he must have asked her to make me think I'm ordinary, and she thought she was just making me not sick."
They both sit in silence.
"... I'm going to stop taking my meds." Viktor nods to himself. "I'll pretend to, but I won't actually do it. Maybe I can throw them up later."
Klaus looks horrified. "No! Just hide in your cheek, and spit it out after!"
"... How do you know how to do that?"
Klaus looks back down at the thread. "I um... I stopped taking painkiller. After we talked about addiction. It felt... it felt too good to have the ghosts go away, and I got scared. So I figured out how to pretend to take them."
"But... but in training-"
Klaus shrugs. "I'd rather have that than take so much I die. I don't wanna be a ghost."
Viktor stands up. "We're going to master both our powers," he says, "And then we're going to show dad and all our siblings how good at them we are, and then we're going to leave. And we can ask Five and Ben is they wanna come, and if Allison says sorry she can too, and if Luther realizes Dad is awful so can he, but no matter what we're leaving together."
Klaus looks Viktor in the eyes. He holds out his pinkie. "Promise?"
Viktor links his pinkie with Klaus's. "Promise."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They get everything from their dad's notebook copied down into Viktor's before Viktor stops taking the meds.
"We need to do it slow," Viktor says, disappointment clear in his voice. "Otherwise it'll probably be too much. This says they're tied to my emotions, and that's why the pills dull them."
"So... let's see." Klaus checks the calendar. "Do you think you could be entirely off of them by the end of the year?"
Viktor looks at the calendar too and thinks for a minute. "... Yeah. I think that'll work. We'll go really slow, so I can train slow."
"That'll be better. It's harder when you start out really, really powerful. I bet that's what happened to you. I bet you just wanted to push the nannies away and just couldn't control the force."
"I hope so. Or maybe I was just a really, really awful toddler."
"We were all awful toddlers. Luther once broke his nannie's wrist. Dad didn't put him on drugs. And Allison rumored hers to let her eat sweets until she was sick all the time. Didn't do anything to her, either." Klaus takes Viktor's hand. "We'll make sure you don't hurt anyone again. Together."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're thirteen years old when Viktor finally fully weans off his meds. They're been practicing his powers little by little, and the slow build proved the right choice. Viktor's powers started small, and it was easier to control them when it was so gradual.
"I don't think Dad knows yet," Viktor whispers one night while using the sound of Klaus tapping his leg against the bed to make their hair float. "The meditation helps a lot. I checked his notebook again and my readings when he monitors our sleep hasn't changed."
"Phew." Klaus opens and closes his palms, where the words Hello and Goodbye are written in sharpie. "We were right about this too, by the way. It helps. It's easier to pull ones to me and push other ones away."
"I knew the Oujia thing wasn't a coincidence." Viktor grins, making the lights in the room flicker a little and the wind pick up outside, but Klaus just grins right back. "Does that mean you can stop using the actual board when we practice?"
"I think so. I should get them tattooed in later, I think. Dad plans to make us get tattoos, right? I'll decide if it's worth it after that."
"... He won't let me get one."
"So we'll get you one later. Or, we'll get you something better. I'm going to have a stupid umbrella on my wrist, that sucks."
Viktor huffs a laugh. "It is pretty lame. Why Umbrellas?"
"Because Dad loves raining on parades."
Viktor covers his mouth so he doesn't laugh aloud. The shitty bed shakes a little. Viktor takes a deep breath, and his powers calm again to be only floating hair. "So... about your powers." He opens his notebook. "You said the other day, you were wishing a ghost would make Luther shut up, right? And then Luther said it felt like someone flicked him between the eyes?"
"Yeah. I didn't want the ghost to do that, but they only half-listen. I felt bad about it."
"But, it means you can make ghosts touch people, probably. Which means, we could go back to helping ghosts move on, not just pushing them away. Unless them killing their killers makes more..."
"Yeah... I don't want to take that risk." Klaus looks a little sick at the idea. "But if I can figure out how to get them to listen better, I bet they'd be really useful on a mission."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Five runs out after fighting with their dad, Klaus and Viktor chase after him. They stop him just before he jumps.
"What?" he snaps, his power fizzling around his fist.
"We can help you figure it out," Viktor says seriously. "Klaus and I have seen Dad's notebook."
"... What?"
"The old bastard keeps a lot of secrets," Klaus says with a humorless laugh. "We can show it to you. But you have to keep quiet about it. Okay?"
"How do I know this is true?" Five looks at Viktor. "No offense, but you're basically his lapdog."
"Not anymore. Klaus and I have been training together for years. I even..." Viktor drops his voice to a whisper. "I even found out I do have powers. Dad was just scared of how strong I was and convinced me I don't."
"He what?!"
"We'll explain it all tonight," Klaus promises. "But you have to come back with us. Please."
"... Fine."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"This is absurd," Five whispers as Viktor shows him the notebooks. "You two have been doing this since we were ten? How haven't you been caught?"
"The ghosts keep lookout," Klaus says, waving his hand at them. He closes his eyes and focuses, and a couple of the ghosts flicker into visibility. He holds it for a few seconds, and then lets go and opens his eyes. "We wouldn't have figured out I could do that if we didn't work together."
"Dad tries to keep a wedge between us," Viktor says quietly. "He wants us to be a fighting team, but he doesn't want us to be a real team. He's scared of what we might do, if we actually help each other. That's why he drugged me. He was scared of my powers and that I'd use them against him."
"This is..." Five shakes his head. "No, no. Why would he complain about our potential if he didn't want us reaching it?"
"He wants us to reach it on his terms." Klaus rolls his eyes. "So we can be as strong as possible but still his little child soldiers. He wants to have his cake and eat it, too. Dickhead."
"But we're not letting him." Viktor flips to a new blank page, with two word at the top. Five's Powers. "If you want, we'll help you with yours too. We'll go to his notebook and copy everything he has. It might take a while, but we can go over what you know about your powers too in that time. Get the full picture."
"You two have been your own little side-team this whole time." Five looks up and nods. "I'm in."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're fourteen when Ben makes a quiet admission to Klaus after a mission. "I can't control it. I think it's going to kill me."
Klaus hugs Ben. "We can help," he whispers. "Okay? Viktor will-"
"Viktor?"
"He didn't like being a girl. I get to have his skirts now, it's pretty cool."
"Oh."
"Viktor will come get you tonight, and we'll help you. I promise."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're fifteen when Ben first actually speaks to the being resting behind the portal within him, and when Five travels an hour into the past and comes back without issue. They're fifteen when Klaus makes a ghost solid and gets it to do as he says for long enough to drive them to Griddy's and celebrate Ben and Five's successes. They're fifteen when Viktor realizes he's truly apart of the family.
They're fifteen when Reginald notices his ornate box is slightly off from where he last put it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Children," their dad says harshly as they all stand lined up before him. "One of you has done something beyond unacceptable. One of you has broken into my office."
Luther, Diego, and Allison go deathly still. Klaus and Viktor's eyes meet past the defiant Five and nervous Ben.
"I'd never disobey your direct orders, Dad," Luther says. "Neither would Allison."
"Hey, I wouldn't either," Diego snaps.
"You did on our last mission."
"That's not the same thing as-"
"No petty squabbling!" Reginald barks, and the first three in line stiffen up again. Reginald's eyes move to Five. "You, are the only of your siblings who could get in and out with complete assurance of stealth."
"Finally acknowledging how impressive I am? I'm flattered," Five says with a tight smirk, "But I have no reason to go through your boring bills and whatever else you keep in there."
Reginald huffs. "An accomplice, then. You've bent to the will of one of your weaker siblings." His eyes travel over to Viktor. "Number Seven, you've been shirking your uniform, I've noticed."
"Mom said I can wear shorts."
"Noted. She'll be reprogrammed accordingly. As for your disobedience, I wouldn't doubt it extends to rifling through my private files."
Viktor takes a deep breath, feeling his power swell. He lets it deflate before speaking. "I haven't gone through stealth training. I don't know how to go undetected."
"True. Your unwavering lack of special nature extends to even the skills one must learn instead of have at birth."
Viktor grits his teeth. The lights flicker a bit.
"It was me," Klaus jumps in, stepping forward. "I was- looking for your monocle. For a prank."
"A prank? You thought to engage in such a childish activity?"
"I was going to paint it red," Klaus lies. "Like a robot."
Diego shoot him a dirty glare for even accidentally comparing their Mom to Reginald.
"Unacceptable behavior, Number Four. You're going to be in private training for the rest of the week, and your Saturday fun and games allotment is repealed for the foreseeable future."
Klaus nods, paled at the thought of the mausoleum. It's not as bad now, not nearly, but he can't help the panic of claustrophobia, and that panic feeds into his powers, and his powers feed the ghosts, and it gets harder and harder to keep them away-
"No."
Viktor steps forward, and Klaus shoots him a look of wide-eyed fear. He shakes his head, trying to warn his brother not to do this, not yet. But Viktor stands tall (metaphorically) against their father.
"Step. Back. In. Line." Reginald points with his cane. "Know your place, Number Seven!"
"I do know my place." He moves and links arms with Klaus. "It's with my brother. You won't send him back to that mausoleum."
"You spoke to your most useless sibling about your training?" Reginald scoffs. "This is useless, Number Four. Number Seven can do nothing to help you, and is in fact extending your punishment, as well as adding to her-"
"His." Five steps forward now. "Viktor is a he. And I'm tired of letting you address him as otherwise."
"Now you're speaking nonsense, Number Five. All of you get back in line."
"Stop making a scene," Luther hisses at them. "Just do as he says."
"No." Viktor looks Reginald in the eyes. "We're done listening to you. You're a liar, an abuser, and a monster."
"Liar?" Luther echoes.
"A liar." Viktor focuses on his heartbeat, and the chandelier begins to sway as wind begins to howl outside. Reginald's eyes go wide in fear and rage.
"What's happening?" Diego looks at Viktor and steps back. "Are you-"
"I have powers," Viktor says. "And Dad hid them from me. He made Allison make me forget. And he tried to keep me away from all of you to make me feel worthless."
He holds Klaus's hand, and Klaus squeezes it back. "But we found out together," Klaus speaks up. "And guess what, Reggie? We worked on our powers together, and we got better than you could ever have hoped to make us."
"Stop this at once. Number One, restrain your si-"
"Brother!" Ben says, finally stepping forward as well. "Five told you, he's our brother! And-and they helped me stop fearing my powers. Helped me learn to work with them. I don't need to control it, just- have an understanding." He hugs his midsection, but no longer does the movement signal an attempt to keep the portal closed, but a show of trust and even affection to the creature behind it. "You wanted me to tell it what to do, and it just made it angry. They helped figure out how to get it to work with me without forcing it to."
"You've all formed this treachery together?" Reginald steps further back. "Number Three, make them cease this!"
Allison stares at Viktor with tears in her eyes. "I-I didn't know- I didn't realize-"
"Number Three!"
"I've got it, Dad." Luther walks over and tries to pry Klaus and Viktor apart-
And a ghost picks him up and drags him away. Luther screams at the sudden contact, the biting cold of the spirit and the way his kicking and punching means nothing to the apparition. Klaus stands tall, his hands glowing as much as Viktor's whole body is.
"We're leaving," Klaus says firmly. "All four of us. Right?"
"Without question," Five seethes.
"I don't know why we would stay." Ben steps closer to Five, still struggling with standing up to their father but knowing there's no other choice now. Not if they want to stay together.
"You'll never survive without me!" Reginald shouts above the howling winds and Luther's sounds of struggle. "You're children! Naive, useless children!"
"We'll figure it out," Viktor snaps, and the windows shatter. "Together, without you, just like we did everything else in our lives!"
"You'll come crawling back to me before the week is up!"
"We'll never speak to you again!"
Klaus raises his hand as soon as the words leave Viktor's mouth, and ghosts swarm. They hold Reginald back and block Pogo and Grace from interfering as Klaus, Five, Ben, and Viktor run out of the front door.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As it turns out, it's not that difficult for superpowered teenagers to make their own money. Not when the world is desperate for interviews and tricks to be done for audiences and the juicy, twisted gossip of the real behind the scenes.
They don't tell about everything all at once. Not yet. There's still three siblings who need to consent to having the full story told.
It's a little harder to find a place to live, until Agnes from Griddy's Doughnuts offers to let them stay until they're all eighteen. It's the first time they have a guardian-like figure in their lives who actually cares, besides what they had in each other.
Five blinks back into the mansion to gather all of their stuff, going back in time to do it while Reginald has only just begin the interrogation about the office. By the time he's done, all of the belongs they love most are safe from Reginald's wrath.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're seventeen when Viktor joins the orchestra of their (unfortunately mandated) public school, and still seventeen when he's offered a place with a real paying position in a real, proper orchestra for when he's out of school.
They're seventeen when Klaus and Ben decide to try and make clothes together, with Ben knowing how to sew from all the ripped clothes his powers used to result in and Klaus having ideas for all kinds of styles.
They're seventeen when Five gets offers from every Ivy League college there is and he denies them all to continue independent research into the phenomena of his own powers while staying close to his siblings.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're eighteen when they get an apartment together, saying goodbye to Agnes and promising to come to the shop every weekend.
They're eighteen when they hear that Reginald Hargreeves has fallen out of public favor.
They're eighteen when they hear he had a public fight with the remaining Umbrella Academy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're nineteen when their brothers and sister show up at their apartment, wet from the rainstorm outside and eyes puffy from crying.
They let them inside without a word.
"He hasn't changed," Luther says. "And... and Allison got hurt. And he didn't care. He blamed her."
"That was last year," Diego seethes.
"And when he said we weren't allowed to ask you for help next time-" Allison looks at them. "We spent a year trying to figure out how to apologize to you all for not walking out with you."
"You weren't ready," Ben says with a shrug. "You don't have to apologize."
"We can't go back." Luther is shaking. "We- we cut ties. Like you guys did. We told him to never contact us again."
"Luckily for you," Klaus says with a smile, "We have two couches with fold-out beds."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're twenty-nine on April 1st, 2019, when Klaus peeks into Viktor's bedroom. "Hey."
Viktor looks up from their new sheet music. "Hey."
Klaus sits on the end of their bed. It's a little shitty, a little creaky, but so much easier to sleep in than any other bed either had ever known. "You know what I realized?"
"What?"
"It's been two full decades since you saved me."
Viktor laughs a little. "I saved you?"
"You really did."
"You saved me, Klaus. Can you imagine if we'd gone on like that? I'd have exploded someday, and I think... I really think I would have taken everything else with me."
"And you probably prevented me from getting addicted to painkillers and other shit my whole life."
Viktor rolls his eyes and sits up. "So we saved each other, how about that?"
Klaus grins. "That, I can agree on. The ultimate team, single-handedly organizing a total rebellion against the biggest villain we'd ever faced."
Viktor reaches out and hold's Klaus's hand, just as they did all those years ago. "Helping you really did help everyone, huh?"
Klaus looks out Viktor's doorway where he can just barely see into their kitchen, dozens family photos stuck to their fridge. Not harsh, flat-faced portrait paintings. Smiling photos, and years of good memories.
"Yeah." He looks back at Viktor with a misty-eyed smile. "We figured it all out. Together."
"Together."
