Steins;Gate Part 5 - Chapter 6 Thoughts & Amane Suzuha Ending
I never knew how much Mayuri loved her grandmother. When she passed away, she went to her grave every day and stood there for hours staring listlessly at the sky not talking to Okabe or even her parents. It was very thoughtful of Okabe to go there every day to watch over her at the cemetery. And one day when he saw her reaching out to the rays of sunlight coming out in the rain, Okabe felt like Mayuri was going to disappear and never come back, so he embraced her and said that he won't let her go, because she's now his hostage and guinea pig for his lab. Seeing this back story, it really puts it into perspective how much Okabe saved Mayuri and vice versa. Mayuri found it difficult to accept the death of her grandma and Okabe found it difficult to deal with loneliness of researching alone. Even though Mayuri doesn't know anything about research, her existence was an reassurance to him and to her. I guess Okabe's mad scientist persona all started to make Mayuri happy again and for her to keep understanding that she's his hostage, his guinea pig, so she can't ever leave him. Omg, if Okabe says it like that, how can I not cry and be touched?
I don't blame Okabe for thinking that everything was a dream after he successfully time leaped. I mean, Mayuri dying? The idea of that is just terrible. It hurts my heart to see Mayuri die again though. It hurts so much. I respect Okabe's desperate attempt to save Mayuri and I really wanted them to escape, but Moeka has already stated that they've blocked off their escape routes in Akiba, there's no real way to run unless he thinks about it a bit more. Mayuri dying from Moeka crashing into her is so so cruel too.... The worst thing though is that he's not next to the time leap machine this time, so what is he going to do! Hmm the men allowed Okabe to run back to the lab and activate the time machine. Why? Do they possibly have someone with the same ability as Okabe to retain memories of all the timelines? Why does it seem like Okabe is getting extra time though? The last time he leapt, he returned to 4:56 of the same day, now he's returned to 4:17.. the good thing in each repeat is how understanding Mayuri is and how well she knows Okabe. She follows him along with no complaints and only wants an explanation after everything is over. Best girl right there. Doesn't waste time, fully believes in him.
But why does it seem like the world is intent on killing Mayuri? If Moeka doesn't kill her, Nae accidentally pushes her off the station. Does this mean that the world can't accept Mayuri's existence and needs to kick her out to keep the balance or something? Is she someone that has to die now no matter what? Are Okabe's efforts going to be futile? I refuse to accept that though! I refuse to accept a world without Mayuri! But I see, Moeka is part of Rounders which is like a separate organisation from SERN, created to find IBN 5100s and they decided to make their move on raiding the lab because of the info Okabe and them have, the completed time machine and because they wanted to make the time machine public and SERN doesn't want that. Most of all though, I hate the extra timeline of Mayuri being used as a human experiment by SERN and turning into a jellyman. That is so terrible... I don't want this.
I wonder why the world needs Mayuri's death. Is it because she's also some sort of time traveller? Or maybe there's a Mayuri that comes to the timeline on this day so this Mayuri can't live no matter what to keep the world balanced? Hmmmm.. But I wonder if sending a D-mail can prevent her death? Will she die on this day no matter what, or does it have to do with the existence of the time machine? I agree with Kurisu though, considering the amount of times Okabe had to time leap and see Mayuri die, I'm surprised it hasn't broken him mentally, but I guess that's just how determined he is to save Mayuri.
Mmm, so Suzuha is John Titor as I initially expected. So I guess as they said, the world works like a visual novel where the common route makes it a predetermined route with various choices that can change little things in between but in the end, you will always end up at the true ending. So in order to change this future that keeps killing Mayuri, they have to jump from this predetermined worldline (attractor field) to another one and they can only jump when there's a big divergence that creates a different ending, and thus creating the possibility of Mayuri not dying. There was a divergence in the year 2000 and the year 2010 which is the current year for them. So basically, the reason that Mayuri keeps dying no matter what is that this is a predetermined worldline where Mayuri will die and that can't be changed, so no matter how many times Okabe leaps, that won't change. The only way to save her is to jump to another world/attractor field with a different predetermined worldline where she doesn't die I guess. If it is considered impossible to save Mayuri in this timeline, then as Okabe says, maybe it's impossible to kill Kurisu in this timeline too. So then I guess when Okabe witnessed Kurisu's death in the beginning, that was a different attractor field and somehow he jumped to this one where instead of Kurisu dying, Mayuri dies. In the end, will Okabe have to choose one of these choices though?
I see, SERN didn't find out about Okabe and them because of the hacking but because of the first D-mail they accidentally sent where Okabe told Daru that Kurisu died. They've been filtering things to check for any emails about time travel and so they picked that up and tracked them. As a member of the resistance in the future, Suzuha was supposed to find an IBN 5100 for Okabe and them to crack through SERN and delete the trace of that email so that they wouldn't have known about the time machine and been able to create the dystopia in 2036 as leaders of this technology. Now that her time machine is somehow broken though, they'll have to try and fix it~ and I love how sweet Mayuri is to suggest that they look for Suzuha's dad while they're repairing the time machine since it's going to take a while.
Wouldn't it be so funny if Tennouji was Suzuha's father and Nae is like her sister though😂 Omg, Suzuha's time machine can only go back into the past because her dad was killed by SERN before he completed it?! No wonder why she was so sentimental! She sacrificed everything and came to 2010 and now she's going to do the same by going to 1975 and get the IBN 5100? That's just so saddening! She can never go home... Trust Mayuri to figure out that Daru is actually Suzuha's father, but really the naming sense of the time machine, the fact that her father could build a time machine etc, I guess it's surprising if it actually isn't him! Mayuri is so cool for figuring out that the badge had the initials of the lab members and the year 2010!
I was thinking that there was no guarantee that Suzuha going to 1975 could be possible considering the time machine is incomplete or there may be problems that prevent her from keeping one for like 35 years until 2010, and I'm sad that I was right. Because Suzuha lost her memories and forgot about her mission to get the IBN 5100, living a carefree life until she remembered at 40 something years old when it was too late. I knew she committed suicide considering the tone of the letter, but it's just so terrible to hear it from Tennouji. Suzuha is such a bright girl, full of life and a clear goal. To think that's her ending is just so terrible.
(Suzuha's ending) So the solution is for Okabe to just continually time leap these past two days forever so that he can enjoy his time with Suzuha and Mayuri without ever having to see the two of them die. He'll just repeat it for the rest of his life since he can't change either of their deaths. Redoing the same day over and over again could cause anyone to go a bit crazy. Not only would you eventually get tired of it but the side effects of using the time machine so many time may be surfacing with Okabe's dark thoughts on killing them to spice things up since everything can be redone. I wonder if he realises that it can only be redone if Kurisu actually finishes the time machine. Like what if she decides to not because he kills them or something.
I agree with Suzuha. Instead of looping endlessly until the day he gets tired of everything, forgets his purpose and allows the things he's preventing to happen, he might as well give it a shot and go back to 1975 with her. Maybe then he can tell her about her mission if she loses her memories and they can support each other in achieving the ending that they both desire. Or they both lose their memories and are separated or something, that would be the worst lol. I guess the good thing is that now they'll be together and Okabe has finally found a more practical reason to live. It might not work out, but at least he tried, and he's with Suzuha so it'll be worth it either way! He can't carry the burden of the world on his shoulders and that's what he needed to understand. I'm glad Suzuha noticed the loop and saved him. I'm sure Mayuri and Suzuha would have preferred such an ending if they could choose, instead of that endless time loop that solves nothing.
I would have liked to see how Okabe and Suzuha live their lives in 1975 though. It would have been a nice side story or something! Another journey but in the past, working hard to save the dystopian future! I think it would be great. I'd totally read it since I quite like Suzuha.
Anyway, continuing on with the story! If we send the D-mail back to the day when Okabe stopped her from leaving, she won't experience the happiness of knowing the lab members, but she should be able to fulfill her mission of going to 1975 since the time machine at that time wasn't broken. I think Suzuha would have preferred this choice the most as well. She came with the hope of succeeding the will of her father, so her mission will always be first priority to her even if it's a lonely one. It's very admirable of her. Not many could do that. Living a lonely life for 35 years to save the future. No one will even know of her work and she won't even know if it'll succeed, but she's giving her whole life for it, so Okabe better not fail!
